Title: DCUO going F2P
Post by: Courtnall6 on September 19, 2011, 03:59:27 PM
http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/350/view/news/read/21935/DC-Universe-Headed-for-Free-to-Play.html

All MMO's should just do this already and from the start. It's a much better business model than subscription only.

I think we all knew this was coming sooner or later.

Smaller inventory, smaller wallet & only 2 character slots is a bit annoying but it's to be expected. I may re-install once this goes live. :)

Okay, I may actually try this out when it goes live.  It doesn't really look like something I'd want to spend a huge amount of time like CoH, but looks like it might be a fine diversion once in a while.

I wonder if F2P people will get access to the GL powerset?

For the GL powers...i think the F@P subscribers have to pay to download it.  The matrix listed in the above thread answers that question, I believe.

That sucks because when it came out, it was free for everybody, now you will have to pay for it.  They should have just made that part of the core game and charge for the next DLC

I'm pretty sure subscribers will still get it for free, it the freebie players that will have to pay for it.  That's what the link says, anyway.

2 slots?  Do past subscribers keep their existing characters?
Title: Re: DCUO going F2P

Past subscribers get 6 slots Tort. You'll have to activate the characters you want to use....the rest are locked out until you resub.

Might happen either on Oct 11th or 18th, there were glitches on the server today. Most players were switch to basic status, and was quickly fixed by the Devs. They have the F2P system in place, I'm guessing they're still preparing more items for the market place. Or waiting for the green light for the higher ups.

So is there a Freedom Reborn gang that plays DCUO then? Because now that it's free to play I'd like to try it and, well, I'd love to play with you guys.
Would anyone want to play with me?

Come on over.  With the server mergers, there's now only 4 servers and it's almost impossible to accidentally pick the wrong one.  They are:

PC - US
PC - EU
PS3 - US
PS3 - EU

When you create your first character you will have the choice between PVE and PVP.  Once you get out of the Tutorial (escaping from Brainiac's ship) you can swap between PVE and PVP shards in the Watchtower (heroes) or the Hall (villains).  Once ingame, send a /t to anyone you see with a FR tag and they can point you toward whichever may be on that can tag you. :)

Yup. There are at least 6 or 8 regulars that are on all throughout the day. But stay away from that Bow Sting toon. He likes corn dogs and beef burritos and it makes him stinky    :D
And if you have log-in or crashing issues...we have someone to blame  :P

By the way I removed leaguers from the league. Was clearing house at the time, didn't know who was who. This was before F2P was announced. Send a tell or in-game mail for invite back in. To Bow Sting or The Blackdragon. Be glad to have returning and new players back.  ^_^

It looks like F2P is coming on Oct 20th? Servers are taken offline for a big patch.

Nope, not the 20th...TBA!!!!!!  :banghead: But they are added a ton of styles to the market and Future Bats and Harley will be available for purchase. Alotta bug fixes and overall patching.

Whoa, free to play?! Okay, I will probably be joining up. And, hey, only two characters. Maybe that will cure my constant altitis and have me actually take a character all the way through the game.
Or make it worse as I constantly delete characters...

If you purchase anything from the DCUO Marketplace, your account automatically (and permanently) from Free to Premium.  This gives you 4 more character slots (and you can purchase as many more as you need), almost double the inventory slots (from 28 to 42 and can purchase more), 5 auction slots (with the base membership, you get none), double the bank slots (from 12 to 24), the ability to trade items with other players, and a few other things.

My main hero is NightShrike and my main villian is Death Play. Both PVE. I have other toons on PVP but I will end up deleteing them...reeeaaalllly don't like PVP servers.

Other toons on PVE - Soladar and John Weston (a Green Lantern). I have a few others but I need to rename them.

U can switch servers. There's a realm teleport in the WT in the central hub. U guys are on PS3? Aww, was looking forward to seeing y'all on PC.

TheCorpse (with no spaces) is up on the PC PVE server.
Except it suddenly froze... but that was okay because hey I can't be playing a video game all day long! (I fully expect to play this most of today.)

Um, his mentor is Batman, but I don't think it really matters, does it? I just wanted him to hang out in spooky Gotham.

Ok, I've managed to spend a (very) little time with this game.  I have some mixed emotions about it.

The PC controls remain hard to get used to, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Costume creation frankly sucks compared to what I'm used to with CoH and CO.  Some of it could probably be rectified with additional parts, but the colorization UI feels very clunky to me.  I don't. like. it. at. all.  I suppose this may have something to do with console compatibility, though.

I really love the separation between "weapon" and "ability" and "movement".  It enhances the feeling that you can create characters which are truly distinctive and not just reskinned clones of an archetype.  If I want to be a Mentalist Speedster with a Bow, then I can do that.

Speaking of movement, I'm really thrilled with the Acrobat's ability to cling to walls.  For me, this is the coolest thing about DCUO so far.  I must confess that my first character, "Websnare", is an Acrobatic Gadgeteering Martial Artist whose Mentor is Batman.  He is, of course, not supposed to resemble a popular Marvel character and any resemblance is strictly superficial.

Plug in an XBox controller, it's going to be a lot easier for you than using the keyboard for movement/fighting, etc.

I kind of DON'T like that Blue Bard... Just because now I feel like I am forced to have a weapon and a super power, whereas lots of my characters either have one or the other. Granted, there are hand blasts, martial arts and brawling... But it just feels weird to me.
Plus, then they also have to have random super powers they wouldn't have. I don't have to use them, but I'll pretty much die if I don't.

Heck, sometimes I die if I do. This game is pretty tough for me.

That's why I like CO best. You get to pick and choose powers from all over and still have viable play options.

(Although I, too, love the ability to stick to walls. And finally super speed is actually useful.)

I get you, UnkoMan.  The DC system probably lends itself best to creating Batman and Superman knockoffs at the moment.  The addition of new powersets may help that.  Don't forget that "Brawling" is a weapon in the DC system.  I do wish that the Martial Arts option was bare-handed.

The big problem with CO, and the reason I don't spend much time in that game, is simply the fact that I as a free player get little benefit from the flexibility of that game system.  Like DCUO, one of the things it does get right is giving you a travel power pretty much right off the bat.  CoH's revamp of the Power Pools also helps in that regard, but the archetype system still feels too limiting and probably always will no matter how much power proliferation they do.  Unfortunately for CO, their archetype system feels even more limiting than CoH's.  So far I haven't felt any strong desire to pop for a sub just to try out freestyle.

Would that I could blend all of the best elements of the superhero games I like.  DCUO for me is mostly a mashfest, as I continue to have issues with targeting.  I don't like the costume options and I'm not too crazy about the PC controls.  I'm not buying a Playstation or even a game controller.

Mostly I'm biding my time until Star Trek Online goes free-to-play, and hoping Cryptic doesn't screw it up.
Title: Re: DCUO going F2P
Post by: UnkoMan on November 22, 2011, 11:43:47 PM
Yeah, Brawling. Actually martial arts can be set to have no weapon skin. That's what Corpse uses.

It's a good thing I don't have many characters though. They would all be brawling or MA probably. Or some dual pistols.

Hmmm... You're right about being a free player in CO, Bard. I always forget that the reason I get such good content is because I have a lifetime subscription. I would feel pretty stifled on the free system, too. Yeah, at least CoH you can choose from two different types of powers...

I agree that a blend would be awesome. The freeform customization of costumes/powers of CO, the gorgeousness of DC, and the sheer amount of content of CoH. Plus mission architect. That would be a game!

Hey, does anybody else have difficulties with this game in general? I find it pretty darn hard.

If you don't want the hassle or time lag of a download, I suppose you could probably find a disc for sale in a store somewhere.  If you have fast internet, just start your download and play FreeCell for a few hours :)

(I am referring of course to the game client download after you've installed the launcher.  The launcher install is pretty quick.)

You're playing on PC, right? If so, make sure you have at least 16 gigs available. I didn't see that advertised anywhere when I was going to try it, and that was a deciding factor for me. I'm picky about mah space, yo.
