Title: Turtle Power!
Post by: BentonGrey on April 13, 2010, 03:38:28 AM
:EDIT: Mission II is now available at the link below!

That's right, one of the other side projects of mine is a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mini-mod!  I've been wanting to do a Turtles mod for a good while, as I mentioned in one of my earlier "Ether" posts, and I have had this sitting on my hardrive for a while now, waiting on just a few little things to be finished.  If you are a child of the 80's, then you almost certainly have a deep and abiding love of the Turtles.  Take a walk down memory lane, and see if you can keep from smiling when you load this mod and hear a familiar song on the main menu.  Take some time to remember why you loved the Turtles way back when, and why you should definitely still love them now.  Join them as they begin their adventures and face the deadly might of the once honorable Foot Clan!

Download the TMNT mod now!:

Unfortunately, I don't exaggerate when I say "mini," as this is only a one mission adventure, but it is set to be the beginning of something a good deal larger, with the Turtles fully built-in and prepped for leveling.  I'm actually rather proud of the job I did creating these four in FF, and I am really happy with their builds.  Why then is it only one mission?  Unlike some of my other projects, it actually has nothing to do with my burnt-out state of mind.  Instead, it is all about a lack of resources!

You see, I've decided to engage in a little bit of friendly blackmailing!  I know how incredibly talented the FF community is, and if any among them decide to turn their talents to the Turtles, giving me the tools I need to continue telling their stories, then continue I will, but I'm pretty limited in what I can do without more art assets.  I'm appending a wish-list to this thread, and replicating it in Requests.  Hopefully, together we can create the first good Ninja Turtles game since Turtles in Time!

Character Wishlist:
Spoiler
Most Important
Shredder: TUE has sworn that he'd do a Shredder skin, something that I would very much love to see, if a mesh or skope existed with easier mapping.  Please, oh for goodness sake, somoene get that man a mesh or skope!
http://www.blast-o-rama.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/TMNT1987_Shredder.png
Bebop: This Warthog mutant with rocks for brains would make an absolutely fantastic villain in any TMNT campaign, plus, he and his partner are perennial favorites of mine.
http://tmnt.wikia.com/wiki/Bebop
Rocksteady: A Rhino with a heart of coal, the same goes for him. (Style has skoped him, so we just need a skin!)
http://tmnt.wikia.com/wiki/Rocksteady

Very Useful
Splinter: Any Turtles tale without Splinter would be lessened by his absence. (Detourne_me has skoped him, so we need a skin!)
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/protectedimage.php?image=KevinGilvear/tmnt255.jpg_24052009
Krang: This ugly little brain could open up lots of story possibilities, including jaunts into Dimension X!  Sadly, I imagine a Technodrome map is beyond FF's abilities.....I do remember someone working on a Krang skope at one point in time, though...
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f387/Woundsofruin/Krang.jpg
Rock Soldiers: These craggy servants of Krang would make for some good fodder.
http://tmnt.wikia.com/wiki/Rock_Soldiers
Rat King: Some other villains would be a great way to spice up a campaign, and Ratie here would be a fairly easy skin/skope...though his rat minions might prove more troublesome....
http://dogandponyshowwebsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/ratking_1987tmnt.jpg
Baxter Stockman/The Fly: The cartoon version, of course.  He was always a nice mix between pitiful and evil.  He's a big part of the Turtles early adventures, and since I've already got a great Mouser, thanks to Detourne_me, he'd be pretty perfect!
Casey Jones: I know, I know, we already have a really excellent skope and skin for him, but he is pretty limited in terms of animations, so I am hoping someone can work some skoping magic there, as I am having a hard time putting together a good herofile for him.  He could also use the ability to pull out a few different sports implements, but beggars can't be choosers!

Useful
April O'Neil: Of course I can simply use a regular civilian female mesh for her, but the classic yellow jumpsuit April would be fairly awesome.
http://tmnt.wikia.com/wiki/File:4095127038_aebf5422de_o.png
Metalhead: He would be a nice way to mix things up on the player.

Haha, thanks Goggles!  It's actually been sitting around for a while, and it isn't exactly as big as the DCUG. :P

I've updated the first post with my wish list!

sorry it took me so long to do some stuff for ya benton.  to make up for it i'll update the Casey Jones skope :)
Also, Bearded made a ratman mesh. I use t for Splinter... didn't i send it to you?  well anyway it has a kitbashed skin.  maybe i'll fix up that skope if someone would like to skin him.

Ok, I've just sent you Casey with keyframes updated to Texas Jack's Kevin_Matchstick. There are a few more melee moves and more appropriate ranged animations.

Hey man, like I said, you've got nothing to apologize for!  Heh, we all get busy or distracted...after all, it only took me four years or so to release the DCUG....only about three and a half years over my initial estimate. ;)  Anyway, if you feel that you MUST make it up to me, I certainly won't argue with you too strongly if that updated Casey skope is the result! :D  Thanks man!  He should be much easier to herofile-ize this way.  Nope, I guess you missed that Splinter skope when you were sending me all your TMNT toys, hopefully both he and Rocksteady can get skinned.

I've been diligently working on a Shredder skope. I've been away for a while, but now I'm back and picking up the skope where I left off.

Have you considered any music for this mod (theme song aside)? If not, check out this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtH4TinSTKU&feature=player_embedded#!) remix from Turtles in Time to fit in somewhere.

EDIT: So this is where I'm at with the Shredder Skope. While it won't look exactly like the Shredder from either the '87 or '03 version, it could easily pass of as either with a proper skin job.

I also plan on adding a cape, btw.

Most of the stuff is from Tommyboy meshes, with a few Gni pieces in there, too.
They are a bunch of stuff from wingzero2525, BUT I have gone through and fixed (or I'm currently fixing) the UV maps for all the problem pieces, so no worries!  :D
EDIT: TUE, I just realized what you meant by being unskinnable. No, none of the piece used lack a UV map, and all can be skinned. Tested it myself.

Awesome Alphanaut!  Having Shredder will give me tons of flexibility.  Hopefully the changes you've made will make the mesh palatable for TUE. ;)

Any chance we might see a cloaked/caped version?

So, I'm working on mission #2, and I was thinking that it might be cool to get some input from the Turtle fans here.  I'm loosely following the first few TMNT episodes, and the first mission ends right after the rooftop battle of that Turtle Tracks, before they go into the Shredder's front company headquarters to rescue April.  I'm debating what I want to do.  I'm thinking that I might do an inside map where you have to dodge Foot Soldiers and traps to rescue April (which would require a FF1 map conversion and a larger file size), or have the Turtles ambush some Foot Soldiers in the process of moving her through the city.  I'd use the latter as a chance to go ahead and introduce Casey Jones.  What do y'all think?

Alright, I need some help from those familiar with the workings of FFX.  I'm wanting to give the Turtles a combo attribute that will make cops attack them on sight, so I want "Scary" to be part of it.  However, when looking to make sure that I had the attribute name right, I discovered that it is no longer in FFX.  How can I put it back in?

Can't wait to try it :)
I was a mild fan of the tv show, but a die-hard aficionado of the beat them all games
(http://www.mmoplayers.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Turtles-In-Time-Comparison.jpg)

I'm busy for now, but in 2 or more weeks, if there's still a character needed, I might step out of my retirement just for the nostalgia :)

Volsung, that's music to my ears!  Here's hoping nostalgia has a strong pull! :D

I think you'll enjoy it if you enjoyed those old games.  I loved those myself, so you might just notice some similarity.  As a matter of fact, wait 'till you see what the powerups look like....

Right oh!  If only I could find a way to make open manholes become deathtraps........

Anyway, Style's recent choice to skope a rather remarkably awesome Ace Duck:
http://www.ninjaturtles.com/toys/1989/aceduck.htm
has me wondering, which TMNT characters from the toys, 'toon, or any versions of the comics, would we all be most interested in seeing and playing with in a TMNT mod?

I had a short session of TMNT (In fact I can only play after lunch).
I admit I cut the music and launch the snes game "turtles in time" soundtrack :D (The original spc are easy to find)
I loved the dialog and appreciate the differences in terms of skills of each heroes.
Alas cops spotted me easely, sometime trough walls! And they left thugs dealing with their crimes peacefully.
I felt quite harassed^^

Great work style!
Things are going smoothly
In fact this project only needs one thing... Talking heads! ;)

Haha, yeah, those cops are remarkably alert for giant mutant turtles....other things?  Not so much. :P   I'm glad that you enjoyed it.  I had a blast writing it.  There IS a route where the cops won't spot you, but they can be uncomfortably close to some of the gentlemen you have to...er..."interview."  Hmm....I've been looking for music for these missions.....curious....

I hope real life treats you well in the weeks to come, Volsung!  No worries, if you find time to help out, that would be awesome, but obviously real life takes priority.

On another note Turtles fans, missions 2 and 3 are now completely done.  I need a Splinter before I can release them though (skope is being worked on), and I'm using a stand-in for Shredder's cameo in mission 2.

Also, I'll use this to put out another plea for a Splinter skope/skin/mesh.  I've got everything I need for mission 3 except Splinter.  If I can get Splinter, and once Daglob finishes Bebop and Rocksteady, I'll be set for the next three or four missions.  Come on guys, help bring the Turtles to life!

My friends, we have a Splinter!  Failed Hero very graciously volunteered to skope this "radical rat" for us, and now all he needs is a skin to match the awesomeness of the skope.  Come on skinners, help me make FF history with a full Turtles mod!  You can see the skope right here:

Splinter's ready to kick some Foot backside, but he needs your help!

And I'm still in need of a tester or two!
Title: Re: Turtle Power!
Post by: oldmanwinters on July 22, 2010, 01:11:28 AM
I figured I ought to post on this thread since this was the mod that introduced me to Freedom Force and have been testing it for Benton Grey for the last week or so.  I am so thrilled about this project and hope we get to see a skinned Splinter, Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady in the near future!

I second the call for more testers.  One major problem I've run across is the second mission in which the TMNT must save April O'Neil and escape from a rooftop of a building about to collapse.  There are two major battles in this mission with an intermission cutscene.  The problem I'm finding is that if April gets KO'd before the intermission period, instead of reviving next to Leonardo as BentonGrey intends, she shows up right next to the exit, and thus makes for an anticlimatic conclusion to the mission.  I'm uncertain whether this problem is limited to my computer or whether it is more widespread.  Thus, testers are needed!

Thanks Winters!  Your enthusiasm for the Turtles mod has kept me charged up, so thanks for playing through those missions so many times, helping me test 'em.

Yeah, I definitely need another tester, because I can't reproduce the error that Winters is getting.  Of course, we are also still in need of a Splinter.

In other news, I know that a few of you, perhaps a minority, or perhaps a surprisingly quiet majority, have been wanting to see April actually get a mission of some sort, well, your wait is over....err...it will be when I release the next episode.  I've just finished a rough draft of a mission which has April on the trail of a hot story, and it will be up to you and Casey Jones to keep her from getting in over her head!  After that, you might just get a chance to face off against Shredder, Bebop, and Rocksteady....plus, Splinter takes the field!

Did you ever get a Shredder? Looks there's one here...

Forgive a newbie if you're already familiar with this one.

Thanks for the suggestion Swede, but I did indeed find a Shredder.  The inimitable Grenadier did a mesh, and an equally awesome TUE did a skin.

Howdy gents, just a small updated here.  I've got missions 3 through 7 pretty much finished.  I've got to do a bit more testing, but everything is pretty much set.  Once I get a Splinter skin I can release them.  After that, all I'll need is Krang to finish up the arc.

Oy!  The anticipation is killing me!  Seven missions nearly completed?!?!

Somebody please get this man a Splinter skin!

Arrg!  So, I've finished up the last touches (the base scenes) on these TMNT missions, and I'm all set to send them to my testers....when, all of a sudden, on a final run through, I start getting this weird error!  I hope y'all can help me figure this out.  I would load a game to a level that used the Turtles Lair map Dana was kind enough to create for me as its base map.  The base scene would start to load, then give me an error box saying that the mission didn't contain level extents and the game was going to use the default settings.  The base scene would then load just fine, but I couldn't play the mission briefing.  What's going on?  I've never had base maps need extents files before!  What's more, I've played the first of these base scenes before, and it worked splendidly.  Can anyone help?  I am really flumoxed on this one guys, and the mod is pretty much completely stalled until I can figure it out!

Got a clue on the mission briefing problem yet?  Sounds strange!

I've sorted out those briefing bugs and about a thousand others.  TMNT missions 1-7 are finally working, and I'm sending them to my testers now.  In the meantime, I'd like someone to do me a small favor.  I need a portrait of Krang to serve as a placeholder until his skin is completed.  It can come from comics or the tv show, what have you, but I'll need it for this release.

I Googled Krang and found this, if it is the right guy I can made a portrait to you, buddy. Just let me know if I found the right "Krang", ok?

Hey JJ, thanks man!  A quick Google search turned this up: http://media.photobucket.com/image/krang/TimothyKelly/Krang-colors.jpg

This cameo of his will be before he gets the body, so do you think you could make a portrait from that image?

Alright, it looks like it will be a good Labor Day!

I have a few things I'm noticing, but I figured I'd need to address the biggest problem I see first.

I'm not able to complete the "Things that Go Bump in the Night" mission.  The first couple of times I played it, the game crashed when I tried to take out the two thugs on the rooftop.  Eventually, I stopped messing with them and just followed the red arrow to complete the primary objective.  After finding Casey and defeating him the game would run the cutscene, then fade to black and never return.  I bypassed this problem when I played through the mission a couple more times by skipping that cutscene with the Esc key.  Then I defeated the thugs (there was a red arrow but no new primary objective) with Raph and Casey and watched the next cutscene.  After it finished, the game just went back into free roam mode (for my lack of a better term), without any new objectives or arrows.  I ran around beating up thugs until I figured the mission was supposed to be over and restarted the mission.  I played through the whole thing again and got to the cutscene and hit Esc hoping I could bypass the problem like before, but the game once again went into free roam mode.  That's the point I'm at so far.  Any help?

Minor Points
I believe Splinter's name has been misspelled as "Spinter" on the character listing.   :P
There is a "dead" Casey Jones laying next to the Opera House (at least there is after Raph teams up with Casey.  Creepy...
I'm a bit confused whether I'm supposed to keep the thug alive before I defeat Casey.  If I do, then he helps me take out Casey and stands next to the heroes during the cutscene.  I usually just take him out myself without consequences.
On the character listing, all the regular Freedom Force heroes seem to be listed twice.  Weird?

EDIT: I think I might have had some incomplete files.  I'm gonna try deleting my old TMNT file and unzipping the fresh one.

EDIT 2: I've now got all the files in my Missions folder, but I still can't pass Level 4 after Casey & Raph beat the group of thugs and the cutscene plays.  It still goes into freeroam mode.  It looks like the game isn't blacking out after the cutscene where Raph interrogates Casey though, so perhaps that problem is fixed with proper installation.

Bah!  Okay, I'll need to do some testing myself with this.  I have no clue what is going on, and that mission was working well for me.  Something like this always manages to happen. :P  Could you play through it again as far as you can and then email me your script.log from your main FF directory?  That might tell me what is happening.  In the interim, since I'll be traveling today and won't be able to test anything, I'd suggest using the mission win code to go on with the campaign.  Hopefully the other missions work better.

You can find instructions on how to use the codes here:
http://www.cheatcc.com/pc/freedomforcevsttr.html

It's entirely possible I had some typos in the strings for some of these characters.  Definitely point them out, and I'll make sure to fix them before release.

Thanks, I got the cheat win code working no problem and tried out the April/Casey level and tried to start the Enoch Inc Robbery mission.  When I load up the 5th mission (Enoch Inc Robbery), the level starts but all I can see are the characters standing in a black void with pinkish objects sitting around.  I can't even get them to move around, so my version of the game must be missing some information to make the level playable.  I skipped it and am now messing around in the Splinter mission.

I'll probably need some more advice on how to locate the script.log file.  I've searched for both script.log and script.txt but can't locate them.  One problem might be that I'm using a Vista OS and the arrangement is different than yours.

The April/Casey mission works pretty good, but here's a list of minor things I've noticed:
*Casey always has a pinkish tint to this skin in this mission (he looks fine in the previous mission and in the sewer base.  I've also noticed this problem sometimes when I use Casey in Rumble Room. Could it be a level specific problem?
*The mission continues as normal even if Casey or April dies.  I'm guessing for the nature of mission, April should be required to survive?
*I haven't been able to kill the first Foot Soldier before he activates the alarm.  He usually starts out so far away that it's really hard for Casey or April to chase him down.
*Whenever April does her "Smite the Wicked" attack, she will either do a quick slap or else levitate and then bring down an overhead smash like Alchemiss.  Her KO animation usually involves her levitating and then collapsing on the floor.  I'm not sure if it is fixable, but it does look a little strange to see her floating in the air.

Also, I love the scene where Shredder mutates Rocksteady and Bebop.  I have noticed that they both have pinkish tints to their skins after the mutation though (might be the same problem Casey is having with certain levels).  EDIT: I sat through it again and Bebop and Rocksteady looked fine.  Weird?

EDIT: Ok, I've spent some time with Splinter's level.  Everything looks good but once I free Leonardo and talk to him, I lose control of the game and can no longer move.  Nothing happens once I hit the talk command.

Pardon the double post, but my last one was getting crowded!

I played through the Splinter mission again.  This time I destroyed all 4 turtles' cages before talking to Leo and everything worked fine.  I was able to finish the level with only one minor but strange problem.  When I backtracked to take out a remaining foot soldier (the Sentry who stands by the door where April/Casey entered the earlier mission, I was aided by an additional set of TMNT!  Seriously, they just came out of the corner and started helping me!  I just decided to walk away and everything was fine.  The exit to this level is a bit strange, since it's just a random door sitting in one of the rooms.  It was pretty close to the command center so the 2 minute deadline made it seem like I had way too much time.

I played the Rocksteady/Bebop level and I love the structure of the mission!  The only problem was that Bebop and Rocksteady's bodies were pure pink, while their heads and weapons looked correct.  I've only played through this mission once though.  EDIT: Bebop and Rocksteady tend have this glitch when I play them in Rumble Room in the city level, but it's not always consistent.

EDIT: One additional question, how do I access all of April's attacks in Rumble Room mode?  She only has her "Smite the Wicked."

Yikes!  Alright Winters, thanks so much for being thorough man.  This is just the kind of feedback that creates good mods, so good work.  Let's start with the script.log thing.  It SHOULD be a .txt file located in your FFvTTR main directory, down among all the game files, beneath the folders.  If it isn't there, I don't know where to tell you to look.  I imagine that you could be right, Vista could be behind that, and I rather imagine that it may also be behind some of our other problems.  So, let's go through your notes:

The pinkish hues you noticed, along with the completely pink skins are a graphical glitch that FF2 is prone to.  When using .tga files in skins, the game will occasionally freak out.  It generally happens when your video card is under a certain amount of strain, or after extended play.  Fortunately, there is an easy fix.  You can just convert the .tga files to .dds format, which is something that I am planning on doing in the final release.  In the meantime, it is annoying, but keep in mind that it won't be permanent.

Raph's Night Out (Raph and Casey):
*I have to teleport the Casey you fight away.  I'll put him on top of a building or something elsewhere, somewhere out of sight.
*The thug with Casey is just window dressing.  You'll probably have to take him out eventually, but he doesn't really matter.  He DOES make the fight a bit easier, though.
*Hmm, the double listing of built-ins is odd...maybe you've got them copied as herofiles?

Snooping Reporter (April and Casey):
*Unfortunately, EZScripting doesn't give me as fine control as I might like.  You'll only lose if BOTH characters bite it.  I'd like to make it a bit more nuanced, but I can't really do that.
*Doesn't he run towards you in a CS?  If not....curious.  Either way, I'll probably just change that into a straight up fight encounter.  It will make it simpler.
*That...is an example of me being lazy.  I totally forgot that I hadn't skoped her KF's.  I'll fix that, and rename that power.

Splinter Insurance:
*The four Turtles you found by the door are the ones from inside the cages.  Basically, it worked better to use two sets, and I couldn't kill them...but EZScript should have gotten rid of them after a while.  I'll check my script.  Either way....I didn't expect anyone to go back out there.
*Yeah, I got lazy with the exit...how about a manhole cover instead?  Did you have the Foot ninjas coming after you?  Do you think it would be better to have to race to the entrance that April and Casey came in?

I'm glad you liked the mutation CS!  I really wanted that moment to be in the mod. :D  Also, I'm glad you liked the Bebop/Rocksteady mission.  I enjoyed writing those two boneheads.  Fighting them with the Turtles was a neat change of pace, I thought, since they were so strong.

As for April's power...that's probably a matter of me mislabeling the two different April characters.  One is a civilian, one is a hero.  The civilian only has the slap.

Well, it looks like MOST of the glitches you experienced are simple fixes...the problems with the Raph/Casey mission concern me though.  I'll try and do some testing on my end.

No, Im almost certain he meant Leatherhead. Which is interesting in that the player would probably have an easier time of it if it were only Leatherface, since Leatherface is just some mead is a mentally challenged hick with a chainsaw, and Leatherhead is an alligator man with super-strength.
