Title: Pulp Music
Post by: BentonGrey on July 28, 2016, 10:39:17 PM
Howdy guys!  I'm doing something rather unusual.  I've got my pulp mod written, and while I've been testing it, I've also been tweaking it in some new ways.  I've been adding character specific music and sounds, which is something I've never done before.  Many of my missions now start with the intro from the central character's radio show, and some have custom theme music too, drawn from movie themes and the like.  However, as always happens with me, a little tweak has turned into a major undertaking!  Ha, I have collected music and intros for the Shadow, the Green Hornet, the Lone Ranger, Zorro, the Rocketeer, and Conan.  I'm having trouble finding anything usable for Tarzan, and I've got absolutely nothing for Doc Savage.  I have no intention of using John Phillips Sousa music like the movie!

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Ideally, I'd like something connected with the character from the pulp period, the 1930s-40s, but into the 50s works, and I've drawn from some of the movie adaptations of some of these characters.  However, all I can find for Tarzan relates to the stupid Disney movie or the new one, which is too new and too trendy for my purposes.  Any thoughts?

Other characters I'm working with and who have their own focus levels include the Avenger and the Spider.  There's an Avenger radio show, but it bore almost no resemblance to the character, so I'm hesitant to use anything from it.

There was a live-action Tarzan series in the 90's (Tarzan's Epic Adventures,) that's supposed to be a lot more faithful to the books than most adaptions were, which is something. Maybe you could use something from that?

Tarzan had a radio show:

I don't know where you would find soundtracks for the movies. I assume that such would have been released, because I have a copy of the soundtrack to "The Thief of Baghdad".

Any adventurous music from John Williams might do for Doc. Like the entire Raiders of the Lost Ark soundtrack.   ;)

Well, not Raiders, but something like it. The NPR episodes had a theme song...

The Spider should have something mysterious-music from an old murder mystery. While there may have been a Spider radio show, there are no known recordings.

The Avenger is a tough one, but maybe some 1930s jazz in a minor key? "Who are you?" would be fitting but a little too contemporary.

The Adventures of Superman Soundtrack should fit the bill for you.

DG, neat!  I didn't know there was a Tarzan radio show!  Also, HOW did I not know that?

Good suggestions.  Yeah, I'm trying to keep things fairly fitting for the time.

YL, that is a great resource!  I think that is going to be super helpful.  Thanks man!
