Title: Maps
Post by: abenavides on July 13, 2016, 01:07:36 AM
Is there a resource somewhere for maps. Back when I started the JLA mod I made a quick list of maps available in the original FF game. And I was planning to add pics for reference (like pic below of the very 1st FF map).

Wondering if something like this already exists.

It used to, with FX Force, but it is gone now, and even FRP 2 is gone.  We DEFINITELY need a visual record of maps.  I've got a partial text description that I've compiled to help me with modding, but I'm always wishing for the great creative resource that FX Force was.

If it's maps you're looking for, Goggles has two packs here: http://gpwarehouse.freedomforceforever.com/

Also, I think Dana's (CmdrKoenig) Yahoo groups have some, too.

Sounds like another mini-project!
I need a visual map record for modding too, so I'll start with the basic FF and FFv3R maps and then see about adding custom ones.

In addition to the ones above, I have a few I've collected over the years and never used.

Quick proof of concept

Not sure I would do this many pics for every map , but just trying it out.
Probably should use a db so the maps could be searchable by things like size and the words in the description

I know FRP and FRP2 are both down, but Prem left us a parting gift:

Yeah, the maps themselves are still available, thankfully.  It's the visual record that we are lacking.  If you're willing to start one, Alex, you'd certainly have my gratitude!

Your example looks good, but I think you're right.  You probably don't need that many pictures.  Heck, just one overview one would be extremely useful, so don't give yourself too much trouble.  A searchable database would be incredible.  If you're interested, I'll be happy to contribute a little by at least being sure to snap some pictures whenever I load a map up for one of my projects.

I've dug into FXForce in the Wayback Machine, and have been able to pull out 22 preview images, and another 16 thumbnails (when the image itself wasn't available -- better than nothing at the moment).  I've even plopped all of those thumbnails into Google image search, but no luck there for bigger sizes.

Would someone like to host these few gems somewhere?

Benton,
Sure,  it would be great if you want to contribute pics. I'm going to go through the original FF game to start myself. Don't forget to use F9 to turn off the interface when you take pics.

an updated page is now here:

Will look into the db eventually, buy just collecting the pics and basic info now. Let me know if any other info would be useful.

These are really great pics, Alex.

How do you get the whole map like that?

Just loading the level and zooming way out (I think 4000 is my setting in my init.py)
I center the map till it fills my screen as best it can.

I also have debug turned on, so I can hit F9 to hide the interface.

Nice images.
I got most maps in my guide book I bought back when FF was new, one fo FFvtTR too, shows locations of most things (canisters, some enemy locations, etc.).

This is coming along very nicely Alex, thank you for all the time and effort that you're putting into this.
