Title: You guys are awesome
Post by: Tomato on April 27, 2016, 04:35:13 PM
So I've been a part of my friend's KHUx(the Kingdom Hearts Mobile game) league, which is mostly made up of the GameFAQs community, which he's a part of. I poked my head over on the GameFAQs boards because they were talking about bringing a game/guild issue over there for the people who aren't active in the chat, and I read through some of the posts...

*shudder*

So, yeah, I wanted you guys to know that you're all awesome, just based on the fact that every other thread on here isn't "OMG, Superheroes stink" or "Freedom Force: WORST GAME EVAR." It amazes me that in a world of internet Anons and spite, we still manage to maintain our happy little corner of reasonable discourse and proper discussion.

Well i think i have had a somewhat similar experience when i joined another forum based on a video game that i liked. I was really shocked to see how members were flaming each other left and right there. They post insulting gifs and remarks at each other. While also putting down the latest installment of the game the forum was all about. They think they are experts when it comes to judging/reviewing video games and belittle the opinions of others who think otherwise. It all came across to me like they were trolling the forums there.

But in the end, i realized that i needed to respect that other people are entitled to their own feelings and opinions of the game. So i tried to understand why they do what they do and did my best to let them realize they should at least respect the other people whose opinions are different from theirs.

I think it's just in this forum that people who might not like the game( :ff: or   :ffvstr:) aren't as vocal about it or at least not as brutal with their complaints.

Well, time for lil ol' me to put my two cents worth in here. Having been a silent member of this community for years now, only having become more active in recent months, This place, and the group of people who frequent here are, by far, the best that the internet has to offer! You all have provided not only your talents and expertise to those of us who have asked for it and needed it, but I have yet to see anyone, at any time, on any of the posts here ever belittle anyone. It's like everyone who frequents this board realizes that everyone was new once, and not everyone is capable of doing everything. Some are fantastic modders, some are fantastic skinners, or phenominal with scripting or FX or whatever. Everyone seems to have something to contribute. And everyone offers friendly advice and commentary when it's asked for or needed. My hats off to each and every one of you for being who you are and for helping those of us who need it. In closing, all I can say to all of you is THANK YOU!!!

I agree wholeheartedly.  There's really no other community online that I have any real interest in being part of.  FR is the only place that I feel is really worth my time because the people here are so fantastic.  I always tell my wife, the people here are just a classy bunch. :)

While I would agree that we *are* all awesome, I think a good portion of the credit would go to Zap, Randy, and maybe even Hellscorp (I don't know how much of an active hand he had before I got behind the scenes).  They were the hammers of Justice around here when it was a little more fast & loose, and set the tone for what would be accepted and allowed around here, and what was too far.  And whereas most forums are probably run like a dictatorship, I kind of view the Admins as the Executive Branch, the Mods are kind of like the Joint Chiefs, and the Titans are kind of like the Legislative Branch, and all of us together ("By Your Powers Combined.....") act like the Judicial Branch when need be.  Many heads makes for a much more level-headed way of handling things, as well as more than enough sets of eyes to see when things get out of hand.

And that concludes today's lesson in US Gov't in a microcosm.   ;)

Considering how long you all have put up with me, there's more than enough proof to show how great the FR Community is. Plus, not only have you been here when I needed it during times of loss, but you all have been very understanding in regards to the other issues that I have as well, and for that, I will always be grateful.

I feel very fortunate for the last dozen years that I have had a place to go to catch up with people, see what was being created, learn new techniques, help people out, and just escape from everyday life to be among friends. I am grateful to everyone here, those before me, and those, for one reason or another, that are no longer with us. When I start on my computer for the day, after checking my email, this is always the first place I visit. Thank you all for making this the best community online or anywhere else, for that matter.

No, let's be realistic guys, Freedom Force is not good. It's a point and click game whose sequel, while slightly better graphically (though you'd never know it with the dds compression they used, ick) was worse in terms of gameplay and story. And frankly, while the overall storyline for both games is ok, it's mostly derivative of other superhero media from the gold and silver age and only really works for people with a rough knowledge of both.

The only thing Freedom Force really has going for it is that it's basically built to be a blank slate for additional content. You can build your own characters in game by creating your own voice packs, creating models and skins to fit your vision, and adding animations that give yours characters their own style of movement. And if that's not enough, you can mod the game using in-game tools to create your own stories and mold the game to your vision. But even with all of that, the reason FF has endured as long as it has is only because of the community of artists, creators, and general contributors that have come to shape it in the years since its release.

This is why it is the best game ever. I have't found anything to compare to it, with an engine preset for super heroics. There are some games even more moddable, but not with the presets.

I will agree with Tomato that some of the mechanics are lack-luster (especially in :ffvstr:), but my lord does the customization GREATLY enhance this game's longevity!

I can't say that I never get bored with this game, but I do see myself coming back to it time and time again.  Not many games do that for me, and this game has given me a great love for comic books and the gagillions of amazing (and even some not-so-amazing) that come with them.

Are there things that I wish were different in FF? Definitely.  I don't like how: Active Defenses are "it's either blocked or not"; attributes are limited to 5, max; stats can only be on a scale from 1-10; non-melee attacks cannot reach the level of damage that melee attacks can; the new energy system in :ffvstr: (the one in :ff: was sooo much better); and quite a few other things.

All of these, however, are overshadowed by the sheer customization that one can make. Be it Irrational's very own characters, Marvel, DC, Image, or even one's own original batch, these games give the player too much freedom to not love this game.  This is only compounded by the fact that there are still such wonderful content creators such as all of you pumping out amazing new meshes, skopes, and skins, even to this day!

Don't be silly, 'Mato.  They're amazing games, even with the flaws in FF2.  The customization makes them legendary, but they are good on their own merits too! :D

Spyder is right.

I'm sorry, but when I compare the gameplay and story to games like Undertale, Lego Batman 3, or the Arkham series, Freedom Force isn't even in the same league. It's not a bad time, certainly, but you cannot honestly tell me anyone here would still be devoting time to it if it were not for the customization options the game has, and the additional content other fans have provided.

Now, don't misunderstand me: My point isn't that it's a bad game and we're all stupid for playing it... we're STILL HERE for goodness sake. I still skim the FF boards at least once a week looking at all the new content people have made for the game. My point is that because it is so open ended, it has allowed this incredibly creative and vibrant community to come from a truly mediocre game.

And, besides, the heading didn't say the game was awesome, but the community.

So? For one thing, not all games need a good story to be good. Just look at the Mario games, or Legend of Zelda, or even the best fighting games. Would anyone honestly say that Street Fighter's story is Shakespeare or the stuff of legends? Probably not. But people still play it to this day, because the gameplay's just that good, (or at least most people think so; give me King of Fighters anyday, (and kudos to anyone who knows what KOF is,)) and they don't really give a darn about the plot.

But in addition to that, I honestly though that just as a game, Freedom Force was pretty darn good. To me at least, the gameplay was a blast. Heck, I'd say that just in terms of gameplay and the battlesystem, it's far better than games like Undertale. Don't get me wrong; Undertale is an amazing game, but the actual gameplay wasn't always the best part of it. But as to why FF was actually good, it's because it just had a fun realtime RTS system with a neat physics engine, and that it made you feel like a Superhero was only part of it. I respect your opinions 'mato, seriously, but how could FF possibly be just mediocre? Because I honestly just don't see it.

And yeah Daglob, the community's great, seriously, but since FF's been brought up, we might as well keep talking about it for at least a bit longer.

A couple of the games I remember playing at the time were Dungeon Siege and Neverwinter Nights. Freedom Force was practically as competent in every which way.

In fact, there aren't any 3D games that spring to mind with particularly memorable stories or superior gameplay than Freedom Force. Am I forgetting anything?

Edit: Morrowind. I stand wildly corrected.

Aw, no way man. Polar opposite experience.

To be fair, I did play every second of it with my brother. I don't remember much about the story, but we did have a buttload of fun times. Looking back, I had way more straight up fun in Morrowing than I can remember from Freedom Force.

Well for me, i think the gameplay for Freedom Force is just fine. It plays just like a superhero (pen & paper) rpg. Only with this game, you now get to see your heroes/stories/adventures  in action. It has a lot of varied elements like stats, attributes, powers, keyframe animations, fx,sounds to help bring your very own superhero characters to life.

The community really helped expand on this by providing much needed new meshes, keyframes, sounds, voicepacks,fx,skins, maps, mods such as ffx, and tools such as ezscript, keyframe transfers, hero tools, nifconverters, nifskope. (Not to mention providing helpful tutorials to help people realize the full potential of customizing the game.)

From that help, the game's potential just continued to grow. The fact that you can almost re create most of the actual superheroes from comics and their corresponding powers and abilities is a testament to how versatile the game has become. The only limits would be your imagination, and of course the learning curve of adding/customizing content. Of course i haven't really tried much of the newer games that have come after it. So i may not yet know if there were/are any superhero games that have done better or offer the same experience.

The gameplay may not be as exciting as other games. But i think it provides a good superhero roleplaying experience.

Not as good as, you know, some of your favorite games of the last few years doesn't automatically equal "not good.". I enjoy the campaigns of Call of Duty. Are they as fulfilling as Bioshock (which I actually currently playing through for the first time) or Resident Evil 4 or Mario Galaxy? Not even close. But I still consider them good.

I just like to point out FF was made by the same people as Bioshock, which was one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time (speaking for myself, it's a suburb game). They knew what they were doing.

You know, there's this one Youtube personality I follow, who once said "If I enjoyed it, it's a good game". I like that. The point is to be entertained. But then again, I'm ridiculously easy to please with video games most of the time.

Re: story: Absolutely. Some games, like sports and racing titles, and competitive multiplayer, have no story whatsoever. For some people too much story (Metal Gear, for example) is a deterrent.

Well, some people love Skyrim, while others (who liked the older games) hate it and call it a Fallout 3 skin. I haven't played them, so I don't know.

Quote from: Spade on May 01, 2016, 06:30:28 PM
Its cliche, but that was the point.

I don't even think it was cliche, it was an intentional homage to the art of Jack Kirby and style of the Silver Age of comics. If you don't like that style or think it's aged poorly that's one thing, but it's a legitimately artistic choice. Cliche to comic fans? sure. Cliche to gamers? No way. There was NOTHING like that out at the time. City of Heroes wouldn't come out for another 2 years. I think the closest we had before that was Comix Zone for the Genesis/Mega Drive, which was modeled on 90's comic trends and was a completely different genre of game (and IMO was also of dubious quality)

Back on topic....

I think the reason why this forum is a lot more civil and pleasant than you'll find in a lot of other places is because the game it's based around is over a decade old and faded into obscurity, and thus the user base is much smaller. The larger the community, the bigger assemblage of jerks. These days I'm kinda desensitized to jerks on the internet. There definitely are some that ruffle my feathers the wrong way, but I kinda just accept that it's the way things are online.

Pretty much this. I didn't mean to start this whole discussion, but a point and click game has never really done it for me. As for games that came at a similar time... Spiderman for the N64 and PSX came out in 2000, Spiderman (movie game) came out 2002 and X-men legends came out in 2004 (a year before the sequel). Those games are what I typically think of when I think of superhero games, and those are what I prefer actually *playing*. That's not intended to be a dig at Freedom Force, but more my personal preference.
Title: Re: You guys are awesome
Post by: Outcast on May 04, 2016, 05:09:09 PM
Yeah i think it all boils down to personal preference. The biggest draw for me when i looked at the box of  :ff: was being given the chance to create my own superhero characters. Just like i love the game WWE Smackdown for the PS1 and succeeding titles after that. They had this robust create a wrestler system there that covered a lot of details and gave you lots of options to choose from.

Still, when i did play the campaign i really came to love it. It just clicked with me somehow. I liked the gameplay experience, and i was thoroughly entertained. Although some of the jerks/experts/hard core gamers i've come across online would say that i'm more of a casual gamer or more of a character/story fan than a real gamer? Since i've played only a few games out there to really be able to compare  :ff: with the rest.

I didn't enjoy all the games that were classified more or less like gems or hall of fame games? I found games like counter strike, quake, red alert boring. Although i did enjoy playing Diablo 2 ,Starcraft 1 and 2 and the Sims. Legend of Zelda, i liked it at first but as the game progressed my interest started to wane. X-men legends, the same. Tried it out, but didn't play it for too long. It's really just a matter of taste i guess.

But..i know a few people online who claim they know how to objectively rate a game if it's good or bad. These are the "hard core" gamers who have played an extensive library of games. So they are able to judge the quality of a game more objectively. Compared to casual gamers, i guess like me. Who have little to compare it to.

Some would agree with me, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But these hard core gamers say you can't judge the quality of a game in a vacuum. So they don't believe that if you enjoyed the game, then it's a good game.

Man, don't listen to your vodka... next thing you know your liver starts talking to you and then you never get any peace.

DJ still has his liver.  It's pickled, in a jar on his mantel.  Occasionally he gets it down and reminisces about the old days of bathtub gin and anti-freeze aged liquors.

To be fair, DJ's liver was pickled well before it went into the jar...

I replaced that original model some time back. It just wasn't doing it for me.  And I don't need to reminisce about bathtub gin and anti-freeze liquors when I still drink them regularly!  Get it right, PG!!!

What are you trying to say, 'Mato? That I escalate things? That I'm here for your amusement? That I'm some type of entertainment thing?

Not to bring things back on topic... But yeah. Freedom Force is a fine game. Not the best. But it'll always be special to me thanks to Freedom Reborn. Just hanging around on the forums, talking to likeminded people, having way more silly fun than should be allowed.

It was a great experience during a very formative time in my life. :rickbm

Just blurry cell phone footage as he walked away into the distance, looking back over his shoulder occasionally... then he disappeared into the woods.

Well, I head that there are 5 sequels planned for it.

I mean, I kind of liked the first movie*, not the one, but why so many sequels?

It's bonkers, I tell you!

*I'm talking about the Blue People one, not the One That Shall Not Be Named

To answer your actual question, it's kind of descended into anarchistic chaos. There was a brief tyrannical occupation by my little ponies and since then it's been kinda quiet. And Juancho hasn't been around to herd us back into microhero normality.

We're all waiting for what comes next, but I'm certain it won't be good.

I've been thinking of issuing a "Sack Avatar" challenge. Sick Alice has imported Sackboy into Freedom Force.
