Title: X-Men: Days of Future Past
Post by: Cyber Burn on June 25, 2014, 04:39:30 AM
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the original comic version was reprinted for the release of the movie?

I don't think it was.  Marvel and Fox and not in good terms with each other, so Marvel is really not pushing the new X-men movie

Yeah... I'll put it this way: Spiderman got movie action figures. Captain America and GotG have action figures. X-men has had minimates for the last 3 X-men films.

That is really a bummer. Not only did I want a copy for myself, but I also wanted to try and get a couple of copies for my nieces and nephews that I'm visiting.

yeah, FOX has never been very easy to deal with as far as merchendising rights... Star Wars would have been in the same boat if Lucas didn't have his own deal with Hasbro and I believe that carried over into Disney when they put Star Wars and Marvel under the same roof (I believe that Hasbro had a deal with Marvel Studios for their movie toylines).

Like JeyNyce said Marvel comics and FOX constantly clash with how each other should handle promotions and as a result Marvel pretty much is pulling the rug out from under FOX for supporting their movie franchises. X-MEN: DOFP has changed things significantly as far as proving they could still do a blockbuster but it's far too late for any toy, book, or media cross promotion and it's not looking any better for the Fantastic Four reboot. It's strictly an upper management clash and fans just get screwed by it.

Essential X-Men #2 is the way to go if you ask me. Byrne and Austin's artwork looks great in black and white, and you get a good deal more than Days of Future Past

- Dark Phoenix Saga
- First appearance of Emma Frost
- The Hellfire Club and Wolverine's famous bad-arse moment
- Proteus
- An early appearance of Alpha Flight before they got their own series

Its still some of the best superhero comics ever written in my opinion

While I know Marvel is very spiteful towards the guys who are playing keep-away with the movie rights (to the point that it's rumored that the comic version of the Fantastic Four is going to get screwed over just to spite the Fox movie reboot. See also: Double Quicksilver) it makes no sense for Marvel to not cash in on the latest  X-Men film for three reasons.

1. They blatantly did so when X-Men First Class came out by making the mini-series "The First X-Men". And yes. I know Marvel said it was a coincidence. Yeah right. Not only did co-writer Neal Adams recently tell me and a room full of people (see my recent thread) that he and the editor had that film firmly in mind, the establishing scene for Magneto in that comic could not have been more based on the Micheal Fassbender version from First Class if Adams himself just drew Mags as Fassbender (which I'd be ok with, since Fassbender is frigging awesome and Magneto's design in that book sucked).

2. The current Magneto ongoing by Cullen Bunn is even MORE inspired by the Fassbender version of Magneto (with the opening scene once again being obviously inspired by the "Magneto kills Nazis" scene from First Class.)

3. They've done so for EVERY Spider-Man film. First Green Goblin returned in both Ultimate Spider-Man AND Peter Parker: Spider-Man. Then FOUR different stories featuring Doc Ock came out (or five, I can't remember if the Ock story in USM came out at that time). Then there was a Sandman arc in Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, AND a Sandman: Year One annual, AND the "Back in Black" arc with Spidey wearing the Black suit, THEN a Lizard arc, and Electro and the Peter Parker version of Spidey are currently appearing in the comic. I don't see why they would ride the Spidey movie cash cow straight to the moon and leave X-Men in the pasture unless they REALLY don't like Fox. And even then Marvel has proven a million times they never let a little thing like integrity get in the way of the all mighty dollar.

It really bites that Marvel's not reprinting the classic story, I think sales would have been huge. Personally, my nieces and nephews are huge comics fans (They make me so proud), and I was really hoping to be able to get them a copy.

There was A hard cover released March 18. (http://www.amazon.com/X-Men-Days-Future-Chris-Claremont/dp/0785184422/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1403935100&sr=8-4&keywords=x-men+days+of+future+past)

There was also a paperback reprinted in 2011. (http://www.amazon.com/X-Men-Days-Future-Chris-Claremont/dp/0785164537/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1403935100&sr=8-2&keywords=x-men+days+of+future+past)

I also want to second that recommendation for the Essential X-Men (assuming you can still find it in print). The Claremont run really is some of the best superhero comics ever made.
The thing about DoFP is that while it's considered an all-time classic comic story these days and is referenced many times, it's also only a few issues long. Any trade or hardcover containing just that storyline would be VERY short (notice, the above trade linked contains 3 or 4 extra stories in it). And personally, while I think it suffers a bit from "old hat by today's standards syndrome", it's still a pretty good story.
