Title: Longbox revival
Post by: Glitch Girl on February 26, 2014, 04:18:09 PM
Because I may be acquiring a washer/dryer soon, I needed to clean out the closet with the washer/dryer hookups, which means finding new homes for all the stuff I've stored there over the past few years...

including 10 longboxes of comics.

I only got two moved last night because as you can imagine, I had to open them and look at the contents.

I immediately noticed a few things.
As you can imagine, part of the evening was spent thumbing through said boxes (which weigh a ton, I packed them pretty solidly) and looking for forgotten gems.

For example: JLA - Foreign Bodies.  (Anyone remember this one?)

Short version: Kobra plays bodyswap roulette with the JLA and they have to adapt to the new situation.  It's not the greatest JLA story ever done, but it has some great character stuff in there as the team has to deal with their new situations, along with some pretty decent art.   It also reminded me of a lot of stuff I liked about that era: Kyle as Green Lantern coming up with really imaginative stuff, James Jessie as a trickster for good (more or less), and a Superman who's quick on the uptake.  I even like how they wrote Zauriel in this, and he's sort of a hit or miss character with me.  Admittedly, Kobra's plan is kind of...well, dumb, but I still enjoyed the ride, even if it did feel a little short.  It was fun, which seems to be missing from so many books these days.

Of course, if this keeps up, I am never going to get those boxes moved in time.  :)

I remember that one. I actually enjoyed it too. There was also another book that came out in that time frame, "JLA: Superpower" (? I think), that I still pull out and read once in a while.

I think I have that one too, but I don't know where it is ATM.

Two more boxes down, and discovery of another forgotten gem.

"Rose" by Jeff Smith & Charles Vess.  Good grief this is gorgeous.  It's a Bone spinoff, a prequel to the Bone series actually, featuring young Gramma Ben and her sister.  Seriously, how could I forget this one?

My mom got on me a long time about moving my boxes of comics out of my old room.  I remember it took forever because I found myself reading through titles in the collection.  I was finally forced to just move them to storage after being given a deadline.  It wuz some great late nights thumbing through my old school collection.  Turns out I was more of a GI Joe fan than I remembered and my collection of Batman comics out numbered my collection of the entire run of Peter David's Hulk.

I kinda wish I had some punk kind hanging around I could share my old comics with to see the look of someone enjoying them for the first time.
