Title: Console cheat codes
Post by: TheBastian on January 12, 2014, 03:49:13 PM
In the original  Freedom Force strategy guide (by Rick Barba) on pages 8-9, are instructions for finding and editing the init.py file to enable the ~ to open up a command line console for cheat codes. However, when I try to follow these directions I can open the init file but when I go to save the changes my computer says only an administrator can save this change and offers to save the change as a .txt file instead.  :banghead: In all other program installations and changes on my system (windows 8), when admin rights are needed I click away and I am fine (I am the admin on this computer). Only this particular change seems to NOT recognize me as the admin. Any suggestions?  :(

If you right-click on the file and go to properties, there should be a checked "Read Only" property at the bottom.  Uncheck it, modify, and you should be able to save it :)

Same problem as above. I uncheck the box, and it goes right back to being checked after I close the prompt. Did my computer forget that, as it's owner, I am the admin? Do I need to change more settings elsewhere before I can change the read-only setting on the file in question?

*Edit: Forgot to state that I am on Win 7. Might be useful to know.

When I first got my new PC (Window 8.1), and I tried editing a few files, I had the same issues. Even though the file I wanted to edit was changed from being "Read Only", it would either not save, or change right back. I ended up having to go through and change the properties on the folders that the files were in, and it took multiple attempts to do so. I would start by changing the properties on your "Irrational Games" folder, making sure that the change is set to affect all files and sub-folders, and then go from there. That should cover most everything.

I should mention that there is another option for this, it's a quick fix, but it worked for me before I got my settings to work.

Copy your "init.py" file and place it into your "My Documents/Documents" folder. Edit the properties so that the file is not set to "Read Only", then make your changes. Your changes should stick, then you could place that file back into your "System" folder, and it should work fine.
