Title: Sleepy Hollow (the series)
Post by: Glitch Girl on September 18, 2013, 05:51:22 PM
So, anyone see the premiere?

I like it.  Intriguing setup, good chemistry between the two leads, a nice mix of tension and humor and mystery.

Premise: strange things have always been afoot in the town of Sleepy Hollow. Police Lieutenant Abbie Mills is on the verge of leaving town for better things when her partner is beheaded and a revolutionary war solider shows up in town with no idea what year it is.  Then things get worse.

More spoilery thoughts...

Spoiler
Getting Clancy Brown for a throwaway part seems odd.. I have a feeling we're going to be hearing a lot of him via the tape recorder over time.

So... what's the priest? Has he really lived in that town for over 200 years?

Ichabod's wife was a good witch now trapped in... well, "limbo" for lack of a better word.  Was that the same woods that the demon walked into after he killed his agent?

Speaking of the sleeper agent, I get the distinct feeling we'll be seeing him again (even though he's dead), only in much worse shape.  And was it just me or was that scene in his living room with the chair just way cool?

I really do like the banter between Ichabod and Abbey a lot.  The culture clashes were nicely done.

Wonder what else George Washington was into.

I watched this tonight...maybe morning for most of youz guyz.  I liked it.  I'm intrigued enough to continue watching it.  It's ok...not great, but ok.  It's a nice tie in to western theology. I don't know any of the actors, but Abbey is hot!

Spoiler
I was expecting a period show...meaning set in the time of the revolution, but I'm a fan of some good sci-fi/sorcery so i accept it being in the present age and the tie-in to religion angle works.  It'll be interesting to see how this plays out...can they stop the apocalypse aka the revealing? Where does Ichabod live?  how will he adjust to modern appliances?  What does he think of black people?  Anyway...plenty to see in coming eps.

Some of what I think are answers to GG's spoiler stuff

That is a definite due in large part to his secret files he had stashed away.

I think that we won't see that specific sleeper agent again but from what I've seen there's a whole gob more agents hiding in that town.

Well, looks like I was wrong on all accounts and shall know end my existence by throwing myself off the nearest and shortest toadstool I can find.

Actually, I was not impressed by the second episode as much as the first one.  There were way too many "fuzzy logic" (nobody noticed the missing body in the morgue or that a police cruiser was gone; the black powder just happened to have been sitting there for 200 years untouched; the mass witch grave hadn't been moved even though there had been construction above it; ect) moments in the show.  This is just me, but I think the writers put all their work into making the first episode as top-notch as they could and forgot they had other episodes to follow.

I've known guys who worked construction as unskilled labor...they were pretty sloppy and lazy.  I wouldn't expect more from people in a town called Sleepy Hallow.  Anyway, second episode was ok with me.  I was watching it as background noise while I worked on other stuff.  Seems to me like it's about the same as Alcatraz so far.  Anyway...I'll keep watching.

Sleepy Hollow is now the first new show of the season to be renewed for a second season.  Oddly, this was done without giving it a full first season, so it will be short seasons for this show.

Wow, that was fast.  And welcomed too.

Okay theory time: (not too spoilery I hope)

Say former Sheriff Corbin heard about what the girls saw in the woods way back when and figured they were the two witnesses mentioned in Revelations (since he already seemed pretty well versed in the occult).  Could that be why he's been looking after both of them in various way over the years, grooming them for what may or may not be coming?

And what's Chief Irving's story?  He seems unusually cool with all this weirdness. I don't think it's a coincidence that he shares a last name with a certain author.

I think it's going to come out that Corbin has some relation to some of the good witches mentioned in Washington's collection, though I could be wrong.

Irving is definitely up to something because he knows way too much about the girls as well as the rest of the force and town.

the more I watch this show the more I like it.  The chemistry between the main actors is enough to overpower the inconsistencies for me. I'll happily keep watching.

I'm loving this show.  The plot sometimes doesn't make sense at all but I love the way the characters play out.  Good stuff!

I think I finally managed to articulate what it is about this show that troubles me.  We're a few episodes behind, but Lady Grey and I have been trying to give it a chance, considering that its subject matter is right up our alley.  I like it, at least in part, but I often find myself getting antsy during the show, and almost every episode has something that I really just have to ignore or work to explain.  Last night I said to the wife that, in terms of big ideas, story elements, and high level plot, I like this show.  However, it constantly fails in the specifics.  A lot of its particular plot points or stories just don't make sense or serve the purpose for which they are intended.  The biggest example, and one that still galls me because of its continued importance, is the entirely underwhelming vision that the sisters had that's supposed to have set this all off.  They saw a grotesque figure and four white trees, and for some reason, completely unexplained or examined, those trees filled them with inexplicable dread and disgust, while merely seeing this figure completely ruined their lives.  It just didn't seem like enough to justify all that happened to them as a result.  If they had been attacked, or if there had been more to it, maybe it would have made more sense.

On the other hand, we both LOVE Ichabod.  He's great.  Abbie we have less patience with, but at times we like her.  We like the use of actual mythological elements and mysticism, but it's hilarious to us how EVERYONE in Hollywood either willfully misinterprets or completely misunderstands Revelations.  They always treat it as if the signs and tribulations are the work of the Devil, rather than what it's actually about.  Still, it's entertaining.

Good say BG.  However, for me...as good as Ichy is I find that I love Abbie.  She's so...gifted and her abilities are very well rounded.

I wish she would just ...Call me!

Also, I'm an Orlando Jones fan..I can't really say why except that I've seen so much of him over the years.
