Title: Masks
Post by: BentonGrey on May 10, 2013, 02:02:59 AM
Has anyone else been reading this pulp hero all-stars book?  It's got the Shadow, the Green Hornet, Kato, the Spider, and the Black Terror, as well as several other characters.  It's illustrated by Alex Ross, making this a must-buy for me.  It seems to be based on the classic Spider story, The Black Police Trilogy.  I've only read a few issues so far, and while I like it, I'm hoping it will pick up a bit more in the future.  It wasn't quite as awesome as I was hoping.

Anyone else reading it?  What do y'all think?  I'm especially interested to hear if Daglob has read it!

Enjoying it myself so far.  Also greatly enjoying the Shadow and Spider series from Dynamite as well.

I'm loving Masks and The Spider but the new Black Bat is kinda bad, which bites cause he's got a really cool look.I just ordered Miss Fury so I don't know about her yet,but I am really looking forward to the new Owl series this Sept.

I highly suggest DC's Whistling Skull mini-series, which is about finish... and Image's Chin Music.  Both seem to be pulpy goodness as well.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions!

So, I've just read up to issue 7.  The STORY of the book is great, but I've finally put my finger on what was bothering me about it.  It looks terrible!  The art went from amazing with Ross to absolutely awful with the main artist.  It's not just that it is ugly, which it really, really is, but the main problem is that it doesn't do its job.  Comic art is about story telling, and this artist is really quite bad at that.  He spends half his time focused on faces and close-ups in the middle of fight scenes, and when he does attempt to show action, it's practically unintelligible.  The plot is really cool, and I love the adaptation of the source.  The dialog is weak, though.  It's functional, but not terribly impressive.  The characters feel pretty underdeveloped, which is understandable with this many heroes, but still, the Roberson's passing up opportunities to flesh out the cast by giving them very generic dialog.  I'm sticking with it, but I'm sad it hasn't been better.

Well, I got the last issue of this series today.  It was, all-in-all, a pretty humongous disappointment.  This was just not very good.  They finally had a really interesting moment at the end, and it was ruined, like every other decent aspect of the book, by the terrible, terrible art.  I've never read a book that was not by Rob Liefeld that was so ugly.  The villain was left pretty much completely un-fleshed out.  The plot just sort of ends, and what should have been the best book I read this year ended, not with a bang, but with a whimper.
