Okay....the chaplain at my last unit was an amazing guy. In addition to being a humble, brave, and compassionate servant of his faith, he was an excellent chaplain "chaps" to us jarheads on deployment. Unlike many I could mention, he worried less about the shiny rank device on his collar, and more about the symbol of his faith, and how best to look out for the "devil dogs" and "swabbies" of his assigned unit. He single handedly restored my faith in the chaplain corps, no kidding.
While on deployment, during one conversation out in the middle of nowhere-armpit-hades-stinky-place, I learned he was also a lover of comics and the superhero mythos. It kind of blew my mind a little, but it was good to know.
Over time, we returned home, and then eventually took orders to new billets, but I've still stayed in touch with him via FB. He has watched my family grow, and while aware of some of the "closet progressive" views I have towards faith and many other social issues not always traditionally congruous with my line of work, has not let that influence our relationship.
Last week I got a box in the mail from him. I opened it, and what was in there?.....Oh, just a note saying that he had a pal, (recently retired) who had taken a job with DC, and was sending him all sorts of swag...which he was now sharing with me. What was it? Oh, just the entire "Flashpoint" TPB series, the "Batman and Robin" TPB, and some other assorted books. The wife has been rolling her eyes all week at me when we go to bed as I bust out another TPB and flip happily through it before we turn out the light. Oh well!
Holy cow. Talk about being the coolest chaps on both Earth Prime, 616, and any other alternate you can think of......
Very cool Grendel. What exactly does he do for DC now? I'm curious.
You know, I didn't think to ask, but now I'm curious. I pass along the RFI to the "chaps", and relay his response.
BTW, I was 100% "Flashpoint" ignorant when I got the box. What a neat storyline. The whole Thomas/Martha/Bruce = Batman/Joker thing was pretty wild.
