Yes, we know Cumberbatch is playing Khan, and it looks like he's doing an awesome job.

That said, question: Forgive me if I'm mistaken on this (I'm not much of a trek buff, sorry to say) but wasn't a huge portion of Khan's motivation in Star Trek II that Kirk had left him on a dying planet for decades? He was a villain before that, IIRC, but he didn't have the beef with Kirk specifically prior to that point. Since all that doesn't exist in New-Trek, what's his motivation here?

Assuming for a moment that this is indeed Kahn, we actually don't need that ST 2 backstory at all.

The thing with Kahn is that he was already a despotic dictator who wanted to (and briefly succeeding doing, if I recall right) take over the world.  He thinks his genetic engineering makes him better than everyone else and he deserves to rule.

Yes, he primarily hated Kirk in ST 2 because of Kirk stranding him on that planet and his wife dying.  This movie, though, seems to show him attacking and taking out Starfleet, not necessarily Kirk in particular which makes sense on two levels.  First, if he want to rule again he needs to take out the main governing body.  Second he would want revenge on the government who stopped them, which Starfleet presumably came out of.

So yeah, makes sense to me.

Referencing "The Eugenics Wars" books perhaps?  Wonder if Gary Seven will get a mention?

J.J. Abrams & Co. still deny Cumberpatch is playing Kahn.  I guess we'll see.

I'd like to be excited about this movie, but since I thought the first one stank out loud, and my personal theory is that J.J. Abrams is actually Bizarro-Joss Whedon, it's hard for me to muster much enthusiasm.

I really enjoyed the last movie and I've always been a Trek fan...but this teaser looks far too much action for a Trek movie. That said it's just a teaser, so we'll see what it's really like.

"Into Darkness"?  Really?

I really like Cumberbatch as an actor... that might pull me in.  He can certainly pull off the role of a villain, whoever that may turn out to be.  But besides that, and a few brief glimpses, I'm seeing something that looks more like a horror movie than Star Trek.

Color me interested.  The first one, despite its flaws, was a lot of fun and a good beginning to a new series.  They've earned some of my trust.

Same w/me IRT Cumberpatch.  He does menacing quite well as Sherlock when he's a good guy (or a high functioning sociopath  ^_^), but I can only imagine the chill factor is he's full on "bad".

Benedict Cumberpatch is the one thing making me have any interest in this movie, because that man is awesome.

It's weird... I was showing this trailer to my sister today, and every time I hear Cumberbatch's (two of you in a row? really?) opening, I get this weird Patrick Stewart vibe right at first. Dunno if it's the accent or the delivery or what. Am I the only one getting that?

His voice is quite something, Tomato. Have you heard of a BBC radio show called Cabin Pressure? Worth having a listen.

I personally liked the reboot, and I don't typically like reboots.  Consequently, I may have to save up my pennies so I can actually see this one in the theaters.
