Title: Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire
Post by: Mr. Hamrick on August 24, 2012, 03:45:59 AM
Alright, I'm making a second thread for this because it's not about the first film or the books.

A few months ago, it was decided that the sequel to The Hunger Games would be shot here in Georgia.  Last week, I learned that they were still casting a few roles for the thing after a friend of mine called me on the phone to ask me if I knew anything about the books or the first film as she was going into an audition.  I didn't but I did some quick research and did my best to help her out.  Mind you, by time she called me, she had already been called in to meet with the casting director and presumably the director.  This was more about her wanting me to help her get her nerves settled and stuff.

Well, I got a call from her on Monday evening that she got the part.  (The audition was that morning.)  The casting is not "public" and will not be formally announced for another two week or so minimum.  It's a speaking part and it will be some screen time for her.   I know the part but just by name.  I've not read the books nor sat through the first film (though probably will after hearing this news).

Anyways, if anyone is interested, I will provide more details when I can.

I've read the first two books (my library doesn't currently have the third) and they're both excellent. As for the movie, it should have been an hour and a  half to two hours longer. What it showed, it portrayed well, but it left out so much to fit in the time boundaries of a normal movie that it just felt.... incomplete. I hope that catching fire turns out better. I read on Wikipedia that the third book will be made into two movies, mockingjay part1 & 2, and released seperately. My first thought was "I wish they'd split the other books into two movies also (or just made them 4 hours apiece, either way). Regardless, I give them an extremely high recommendation, they make for an excellent read.

That's amazing! Congratulations to her.

Hey tell her your friend BWPS wants a part too! Hollywood hires the same way as Chili's right? Nevermind, no one is going to believe I'm hungry.

I look forward to the sequel but I'm a little dubious of some of the casting choices. I can't seem to picture Jena Malone as Johanna, but maybe it'll work. Who knows?

While I will admit that I am not that familiar with Johanna, I wouldn't discount Jena Malone.   She can play the emotional stuff quite well.  As for the physical stuff, she is more than willing to train for and do as much of her own stunts as they will let her do.    How much of her stuff have you seen?

I want to see this film but haven't read the books. Do you guys recommend that I read the books first?

I've seen her in a few flicks (Donnie Darko, Sucker Punch, Saved, The Ruins, a few more), but Johanna isn't an emotional character. She's a tough as nails broad. I just don't picture Jena Malone as that character, but I can be proven wrong. I'm not aggressively against the choice, I just think there are a few actresses better fit for the role is all.

Also, the books are great. I do recommend them. The first book in particular is really fantastic; the second one is pretty great, too.. just not as fantastic as the first one.

@Captmorgan72, you'll probably want to read the books first, there's a lot that the movie doesn't explain.

captmorgan72, I echo captainawesome's reply. In addition to the added plot detail and character development in the books, the books are 1) really easy reads and 2) total page-turners. You can barrel through them in no time and you will enjoy it.
Spoiler
though, to be honest, the third book is a downer.

I stand corrected.  The casting is officially public and Tiffany Waxler is "District 10 Female Tribute" and she told me the wrong number out of excitement when she called me to tell me.

On a different note, she has already been photographed by the paparazzi on set in her bathrobe.  It was on her first day on set nonetheless.  Thankfully she was wearing that said bathrobe to hide her tribute costume.  Some of the cast members weren't and Tiff got kudos for behaving properly.  She called me after finding out and asked if I could get online and find the picture and email it to her.

Anyways, I've not been and not going to keep up with the shooting unless Tiffany calls me with anything.  Even then, I doubt I will repeat it.
