Title: New (Doctor) Who, Season 7
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on March 21, 2012, 11:49:02 PM
Yeah, I'm starting this now, because it the Doctor's next companion was just announced (http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/03/meet-jenna-louise-coleman-doctor-whos-new-sidekick.html).  Don't know anything about the actress or the character, but they picked yet another young gorgeous female, I couldn't help but notice.  Doesn't mean the character herself won't be cool.  Apparently Amy and Rory will leave by the end of the first half of the season, and the new character will be introduced in the Christmas special.  Considering the apparently mysterious nature of her appearance I have hopes that at least it won't be yet another human girl from modern Earth.  The classic series at least had a lot more variety than that.

I too hope she won't be from Earth circa 2012.  Let's have some variety!

I'd really like to see the Doctor encounter a companion close to his level of intellect. Kinda like Nyssa from the classic series.
Or failing that, dig out Leela's old skins...a few alterations, and let her go wild with a Janus thorn.

Heh, that's a tradition that goes all the way back to the beginning of the series. "Something for the dads", as they used to say. In the Hartnell and Troughton years, there was also an obligatory young-ish male to handle the "action" stuff, but starting with Pertwee, the Doctors were generally able to do that themselves.

I am aware of the history, but at least the old ones did have some variety.  Less so starting with no 3 as you pointed out, but there was still K-9.

Also, Donna was a refreshing chance of pace, at least to me, not quite fitting the usual mold.

Oh, I agree -- I should've mentioned her as the rare exception to the "obligatory ingenue" rule. Although in other ways she was a throwback to old-style companions, in that she was a platonic friend rather than a love interest. It will be interesting to see which side the new lady falls on...

To be fair, the Doctor never felt "that way" about Amy Pond either.

And that was another thing I liked about Amy.  She may have seemed to fall for the Doctor at first, it's pretty quickly established that Rory is her true love, and he wasn't killed off permanently when they had to the chance to do so.

I'll reserve judgement till I see the character, but the actress looks like she's 12. Anyone else smelling another Ace?

New leaky photos from Amy and Rory's final episode.  Very spoilery.
