Title: Falling Skies
Post by: B A D on August 10, 2011, 05:00:38 PM
Just watched the season finale.

I want t to like this show, I really do.

But to me its like "Walking Dead lite". Not enough people croaking, not enough drama, and a bit cliched.

Plus, apparently the aliens are Rikti (coh reference.) Which turns me off right there.

Some of the show has been good, so Ill give season 2 a whirl.

Yeah, it could really use a bit of sharpening.  I love the concept, I like the main characters in places.  I love the IDEA of the history professor-turned-resistance fighter, and I feel like Noah Wylie does a pretty good job.  I'd say his is about the strongest performance on the show.  While the twists have, for the most part, been a bit on the obvious side, they are at least trying to make things interesting.  It does have a bit too much melodrama and not enough action.  Also, what bothers me an inordinate amount is the sloppy writing in evidence here and there.  This is primarily true as regards the tactics of the resistance.  Now, I'm not exactly a military scholar, but I know enough about military history and tactics to enjoy it when shows make an attempt at accuracy in regards to those things.  While the militia is certainly not supposed to be as highly trained and disciplined as, say the modern U.S. military, they are lead by actual soldiers, and they've supposedly been fighting for quite some time.  So, it bothers me when certain types of things happen.  For example, in one episode the 2nd Mass. is camped in a field and a bunch of bad guys just stroll into their camp.  They don't sneak in or anything, they just stroll right on in.  Now, yeah, maybe the resistance isn't exactly full of real soldiers, but ANY military force in hostile territory would have pickets.  There's a number of things like that which show up throughout the show, and I know it is nitpicking, but it just bothers me.  Alright, my rant's done.

I think my biggest beef is the family shcmaltz that I get off of the show. Throwing the birthday party for the youngest, all the focus on the kids, etc.

I hate to keep comparing it to TWD, but in that show, they shoot the kids in the head when they get zombified. . For some reason, that works better for me in the post apocalyptic atmosphere.

I'm gonna be the minority here then. I haven't yet watched the finale, but I've enjoyed everything else so far (Mostly Moon Bloodgood and Sarah Carter). I won't say that there aren't plot holes or that there is no predicatability in the storyline. But for being a TV show, I am more than eager to watch the finale so I can begin looking forward to the next season.
