Alright, I got into this argument with someone tonight and I just want to get my information clarified. Jean Grey can be referred to as either Jean Grey or Phoenix, because the name Phoenix can refer not only to the cosmic entity but the alias that Jean gave herself after becoming the host for the Phoenix Force itself. So, it would not be incorrect to refer to Jean as Phoenix.
Right? o_o
Yes Phoenix is a code name used by Jean Grey. First used in the mid to late 90s if right, assuming you don't count the Phoenix duplicate as Jean.

Correct. Jean and Phoenix became the same person over time as writers at Marvel slowly worked out a way for her to remain linked with the Entity long after it killed it's human form. Technically, Jean (the entity) that copied her body was the one that dubbed her "Phoenix" and the real Jean upon her return refused to use that alias because it belonged to a creature that had stolen years of her life and later on when Rachel Summers (her daughter from an alternate future) took the name she finally came to terms with the Phoenix Force in her life. When the Phoenix Entity started manifesting itself thru her powers during Morrison's New X-Men comic she finally decided to embrace her enhanced powers and officially take the name Phoenix as her alias (even donning a shirt with the Phoenix logo from her old costume). And of course after her recent death she finally merged with the Entity in whole by taking on the aspects of the White Phoenix and left her old life behind to understand what lies beyond in other worlds.

Ah, alright. That clears it up. I've been out of the loop for too long in terms of comics and have only been getting back into the Marvel Universe since the Civil War. x_x
