Title: Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

A very different take on a live action MK.  A big gruesome, but... I kinda think the differences work.

What exactly is it?

Was it a trailer or something?

You had some real actors in that clip.  I would if this is real or what.

no idea what it's for at present - the uploader didn't leave much info.

Still, since WB owns Midway now... could be any number of things.

It's for the movie that's coming in 2013.

That, my friends, is how you reboot a franchise.

I actually wish they could just do a video game movie that actually follows the story lines without any of these weird retcons. While the video looks interesting I dont think the movie will be all that great. The first was close to the video game but not exact and it suffered from some bad casting for certain parts.

Honestly, I don't think it's for a movie.  The more I think about it, the more I lean toward "video game reboot". With E3 and all, it's a good time to generate buzz.

looks fantastic and extremely well done, but it's not mortal kombat, they could have easily did the same style and grit but keep the story elements that stop it being another standard cop drama

More specifically:

Quote from: chud.comUPDATE 2: Cat's out of the bag. This is for the movie, and it comes from the mind of genius fight choreographer Larnell Stovall. He's the guy who did the fights for the excellent Undisputed 3: Redemption, on DVD and Blu-Ray right now. I hope that this movie gets made with Larnell plotting the punches, because this guy isn't just a geek like us, he's also got an incredible skill and ambition to create the next generation of fight choreography.

Edit: Wow, I came off smug with this post. I'm sorry.

It looks pretty cool in a really cheesy B-movie kind of way. I'm not a huge MK fan, but I feel bad for anyone who is, MK would probably work better as a movie with a lot of magic.
But I'd see this, it looks a lot better than Legend of Chun-Li. I refuse to watch that, even on TV. I really didn't understand: Street Fighter has a pretty decent story and great characters, why change everything to make such a garbage film? And why make Vega soo... that ugly guy from Black Eyed Peas?

Two things:

1) A movie for 2011 starts out with a caption that says '2010'? Really? Why bother?

2) I wish I could get my bo staff to make that cool noise.

i'm stoked.  that was a really decent trailer, and i really think that this is a great direction to go in for the franchise.
It's like bloodsport with a purpose... something most movies based on fighters lack.
or that genre tries to make up for lack of story, but loses the 'tournament' aspect - like DOA.
this seems to do both well.

Count me out. I way preferred the mystical mythological approach. It kind of like the ultimate universe for Mortal Combat. No Thanks.

I know I'm  strange these days the extra gore will most likely draw in a few folks I suppose.

I'm definitly in on this version... caught my attention just on the style of film making alone.

However, I find it amusing that people are disconnecting with the film because it's a new realistic take on the mythology.. last time I checked, Nolan isn't involved in production or director's chair so there isn't a "rule" in place that says Outworld or magic is completely elimated from the story at all (just means that it might not used outside of Outworld). Sure the film makers are taking a page from rebooting franchises with a realistic tone but all action movies have done that since Batman Begins came out and Marvel Studios tone with their own Avengers tie-in films. That promo just sets up that Reptile, Baraka, and Scorpion were human once and quite dark twisted people at that.. very much the people who would be involved in a Bloodsport death match. The first films at New Line just proved that you can't cut and paste a Reptile Ninja with no background at all into a story for a awesome fight sequence then have the hero pull a fatality move and then move on like nothing unusual happened. You just end up with a thin story that wraps around action sequences with nods towards the mythology but nothing for new viewers to hook into. I went with my friends to see the first movie and we all loved it because we had nerdgasms from seeing the game on film but my two cousins that went along who never played the games just got lost and wondered where the plot went the moments the fights started.

I'm loving all the reactions that killing Johnny Cage in a flashback is getting.. the fans immediatly forgot this was a promotional peice not a trailer so it was a way to work in that fight sequence and that he does die and comes back to life later in Outworld. So by people automatically assuming that a "realistic" tone is used that also makes Johnny Cage a throw away character because all he can ever be in the film is a washed up actor-stuntman destined to die so get him as much screen time as possible. And everyone who moans about this reboot should sit down and watch MKA and Mortal Kombat Konquest back to back until their eyes bleed because just following the video games to the letter can be a double edged sword.

Thought it's not the orignal MK, I still like it.  It's a new approch on a old game.

@Velocity
Ah I see. Cool, thanks for the intel.

Have to say that this whole video release is a great example of "Viral Marketing".   Within minutes of it's release, TONS of people were talking about it, wondering what it was, theorizing, and so forth.

As for me, I see it as kind of an "Elseworlds" MK - something inspired by the original but going in a different direction.  It is brutal and less mystical than the source material, but I think the vibe that the director has going here works.

(and even though I'm surprised they killed off Johnny Cage rather quickly, I did kinda like the bit with the cigar when he knows he's going to die)

That was kinda cool. I'd watch it. Why was Spawn so angry...did he lose Wanda in this film too?

Looks like a proof of concept to me (think the first clip of Sin City). I dont care, Mortal Kombat + More violence equals fun. No skin off my back if it ends up being horrible, and I'm one of the few people who think Mortal Kombat had a better plot/story/dialog than other fighting games at the time.

Ugh...

I liked Mortal Kombat's "storyline"...I dislike crime-dramas...I'll just stick with the original Mortal Kombat stuff...Thanks.

I thought this was just a pitch to make a movie. Not an actual movie trailer.

Theres some potential in doing this but it looked like a mid 90's straight to DVD action flick.

I liked the old one (To this day, I still use "This is the part where you fall down"), but I'd totally watch this.

Interview with the director who interestingly makes a point of including the mysyical aspects of MK in his vision.

Sidenote: Speaking of the game, there is indeed a trailer out for a new game. Sorry, no link - forgot where I saw it and can't seem to backtrack to it.

Interesting trailer. For those interested, the graphics are still 3D, but the gameplay is pure 2D, ala SF4, and so far, it seems at though the plot of this game may be a reboot for the franchise, though not in the same vein as that short. The mysticism is still there, and what they seem to be doing is retelling the story of MK1, but without limiting themselves to just the roster of that one game.

Also, tag-team. ;)
