Penny Arcade did a strip on that a few days ago (no link due to language). Apparently it's a bit mobius.
The PA strip made me think "Silent Hill 1" aka "the people who wrote the game have no clue what is going on". I really liked that in Silent Hill actually, it was very David Lynch but supernatural. I really want to give Alan Wake a try.
