So I recently bought a microphone and a screen recording program and I'd like to do some skinning tutorials. I was originally just going to record myself going through the entire skinning process. But, once I started, I realized it wasn't going to work out.
Instead, I'd like to create a collection of mini-tutorials based on questions the rest of you ask. For example: Podmark could ask, "Murs, how did you make the teeth on your venom skin?" In turn, I would answer his question with a video clip.
All tutorials will be hosted @ FRP (http://frp.unlimited2.net/)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. How I do my highlights. (http://frp.unlimited2.net/skinning-tutorial-highlights/)
2. Making the blue for my Spider-Man 2099. (http://frp.unlimited2.net/skinning-tutorial-color/)
3. Hurr (http://frp.unlimited2.net/skinning-tutorial-hair/)...I mean hair.
4. How I did a single boot. (http://frp.unlimited2.net/skinning-tutorial-boots/)
5. How I do a logo. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2NQeH_S2ck)
Great idea, Murs. Tutorials are a great help for the beginners like myself.
Let's start with "Murs, how did you make the (perfect) highlights on your Spidey 2099 skin?"

Are you asking about the seams or the highlights on the muscles?
The highlights on the muscles. I'm trying learn how to do highlights on my skins and yours are great looking.
Cool idea. I look forward to the kind of tutorials you end up creating.
You should definitely do one on highlights.
I answered JJ's question. Check the first post for the link. ;)
Murs, very cool video and a way of highlighting that I never thought of!
I look forward to some other tips you may have. You could do a tutorial on skinning extras, maybe.. I remember having a really hard time with that when I first started skinning.
great video murs, though i don't agree with the method it was well done

Thanks LP. Adobe's tagline for Photoshop should be: "There's more than one way to skin a cat." Because there are numerous ways to achieve a certain effect. My way is just one of them.

Sure, did you have something specific in mind?

Thanks for the tutorial, Murs.
You're welcome. ^_^
Very cool. I always wonder how other people do these things. With me I tend to treat the image like an actual canvas and constantly paint the highlight/shadow on top and then blend everything with the smudge tool. My way works but has it's problems. If the colors aren't right they don't blend. It becomes very much just trial and error - and because I smear so much I tend to have blurrier details. It also helps that I have a tablet too. I don't know how people can draw with a mouse.
Are you trying to imply something about us users that have to use the mouse to do photoshop work, Area? Oh, there's about to be a fight in this joint. *dramatic, yet exciting, fight music plays*

Vega's theme from Street Fighter 2? That always gets me pumped!
I just watched your highlight video, we actually use the same technique.
Also I really got to start using my tablet.
I have a question Murs, how do you colour your base? Like going from your original base to the blue tone you have for the Spidey 2099 skin you did.
I don't think it's a negative to be a mouse person but I couldn't draw that way (I don't even surf the internet anymore with a mouse).
The extras I had in mind were maybe belts or different weapons, like a gun or a sword. I'm sure people can definitely learn from that.
However, the thing that I believe all skinners could aid from is different techniques in doing HAIR, for both male and female meshes.

I don't remember exactly how I did it. I'm guessing I just took a blue version of my base and pasted it over a desaturated version of it. Set the blue to multiply and merged down. I'll play around a bit and hopefully I'll have something up by tonight.

I don't think I could live without mine. It's like digital crack.

Alrighty. I have been wanting to re-do Deadpool...again. That's a good opportunity for doing extras.
As for hair, I think I can come up with something by today or tomorrow.
Another video posted @ FRP (http://frp.unlimited2.net/)
First post has a direct link to the tute.
Just watched the video Murs. You use a few techniques that I don't so I'll have to try those out.
These videos are really good, quick and to the point and I think they can really help out some skinners.
The reason I asked about this was basically to see if you knew a better way to accomplish colouring bases. Sometimes I can get them the way I want quickly but other times it takes a while. Like I said above you do some things I don't so I'll try those out in future skins.

I treat the skin much as canvas too and I use just a mouse...actually never had a tablet so I had to teach myself new ways to paint some stuff...though I stay away from the smudge..that thing is EVIL!!!! More of layers of fine, low opacity paint actually works better, I find.
Maybe one day, I'll take up the challenge of showing folks my way like Murs did his..but I doubt that!
May I ask another question?
Murs, how you did the boots of your Red Son Superman? Most of skins (including all of mine) has the boots looking form fitting, like spandex. Your Red Son Supes has a great leather feel and no muscles showing in his boots. How you did that?

Ask as many questions as you want JJ. That's what this is for. My goal is to answer at least 2 questions a week.
I actually have a question. Would it be helpful to anyone to record myself making a skin? It wouldn't have any audio. I don't think I could talk that long without some sort of human interaction.
I can already skin, but I'd be interested to see how someone else does it.
New video up.
That's fantastic, Murs. I've always struggled with hair more than any other part of a skin but with your video, I feel like I could really get a grip on it. Thank you so much for sharing your techniques.

Answered. (http://frp.unlimited2.net/skinning-tutorial-boots/)
There's a link in the first post too.
interesting technique, usually i would just tone the boots by hand but that really works for tight boots rather than solid boots
Hey Bob Ross, can you show me how to paint those "happy trees?"
Seriously, though... great videos. Gonna have to try some of this stuff sometime.
Thanks for the tut, Murs. very interesting technique. I'll try it in the first chance!
Murs these tutorials are bloody brilliant. If we had had these like 5 years ago we'd have more and better skinners.
It also highlights that I really don't know Photoshop that well. Even my classes haven't taught me some of the cool tricks it can do.

Perhaps I should become a Photoshop instructor.
A new tutorial is up. Not much to this one, really. Just my process of creating a logo for the skins that need 'em. Click. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2NQeH_S2ck) There's a link in the first post as well and I'll set up a post on FRP soon-ish.
Seems like another solid tutorial. I hope it helps people.
Murs! What you're doing is a big contribution to all skinners, current and future.
Nice logo tut. I like the bit about the Bevel and Emboss for the seam.. I tend to just use the line tool, but I may use bevel/emboss more often.
Murs, loving these tutorials. I got a question for you about color. How do you come up with a brilliant yellow for your skins? The tutorial for getting the blue really doesn't work with yellows or oranges.

I don't recall off the top of my head. But, I'll play around a little and I'll try and have an answer for you tonight or tomorrow morning.
EDIT: If someone else has the answer off the top of their feel free to answer for me. I'm probably not the right person to answer this question because yellow is always a hassle for me.
See, I don't have a problem with yellow, but I also set up my bases with colors like that in mind... Basically the way I set my stuff up, I have a shadow layer, and then I use pre-set masks for all my highlight layers... meaning I can adjust the color or the opacity of my highlights relatively quickly.
Yeah I find yellow a pain too. And red. Those ones are tough for me.
Alrighty, try this:
QuoteDesaturate your base skin.
Create a new layer and fill with orange > Set the layer to Overlay > Merge down.
Create a new layer and fill with yellow > Set the layer to Hard Light > Set Opacity of layer to 75% > Merge down.
CTRL + L for Levels Adjustment > set the far left number to 50 > Press OK > Merge down > CTRL + U for Hue/Saturation dialogue box > Set Hue to +5.
Let me know if that works.
Man, you are quick! That worked extremely well. Thank you, sir.
No prob, Bill. Glad I could help
I've been out of the game for a looooong time and have recently been bitten by the bug again. As has already been said, these tuts are invaluable and would have been a huge asset years ago.
That being said, how about a rundown on cloth folds/wrinkles, facial hair (I'm assuming this would just be a variant on the hair tutorial), and your Falcon hair (I've got one or two characters in mind who could use this)?

Facial hair would be exactly like the hair. Just a different shape and area of the head. Falcon's hair is near identical to my hair method. Should be able to pull off something quick for that. As for cloth, that might have to be broken up into multiple videos. On top of that, it's tablet heavy so I can't see it being useful for very many people. But, I'll make one eventually.
Took a page out of murs' book and made a quick skin tutorial... It's uploading as we speak, but I have to run some errands before it finishes. Keep checking my youtube page (http://www.youtube.com/user/tomatoisjp?feature=mhum) ad I'll edit this post whenever I get back.
Nice! I'm glad someone else is finally contributing to this thread.
I thank thee, Thomas of Ato. ^_^
Yes.Thanks for taking the time to do this Tomato. These skin tutorials are always appreciated. I also think it's a good way to encourage others to skin.
It's not much this time around, to be honest... basically I explain how my base is set up and how I manipulate it for more difficult colors like yellow.
Video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py6fDwcq-uQ but it doesn't want to process the last 2%. grrr.
Edit: Finally finished... after I posted. Imma stab youtube in teh face!
Well, i can't say that i can follow everything in these video tutorials, but it's really cool to see how you guys do these things in just minutes. :)
Interesting tutorial Tomato. Moved really fast so I'll have to watch it a few times to really catch what you were doing. I'm not really sure I can use much of it yet without developing a base like yours, but I'll trying playing with some of it.
I like that hair technique. I may have to try that out. I've never been confident with hair.
It's neat seeing how other people skin too, though I don't have the attention span to sit through any of the longer videos...
Hey guys, along with just about every other aspect of skinning, I really struggle with skinning the extras of a mesh (weapons, gloves/boots, etc). Does anyone have some suggestions on tackling these? Thanks.

A short and vague answer is to use gradients...a lot of them. But, I'm gonna try and create a video this week.
is there a way we could get these videos back up i think they could be really helpful
