I've most likely asked this before, so apologies first of all.
Secondly, i remember working with NIF's a while back, that you could set what dds/tga files were linked to them so as to edit fx and the like. I remember doing this. I just don't rememeber HOW.
Where are the listings for the linked files in the nif viewer? or am i even using the right program?

You'll want to get Nifskope for editing nif files.
Additionally, the niftools plug-ins for blender if you want to get more in depth and create new nif's or maipulate existing stuff within a 3D program and don't have 3D Studio Max.
