Title: Character Tool - Mac
Post by: UnkoMan on March 08, 2010, 07:23:05 PM
Hi there folks.

I know, I'm pretty much a lurker at this point. Wotta jerk! Well I switched to a mac, you see. It took a while to fully change over, but I tried to reformat my PC and it turned out my sound card wasn't supported at all anymore... I finally decided to toss in the towel on that old clunker, but with that came an end to any FF content.

Anyhow, I can see I'm going to be blah blah blahing soon so I'll just say what I was going to in the first place.
There was never a version of character tool that worked on macs was there? Or is there now that they've got the whole steam thing going on (I really know nothing about that). I might have a couple more characters in me that I'd like to get out at some point.

Virtualization is your friend, especially if you've got more than 2GB of RAM. Both VMWare Fusion and Parallel Desktop should be good for this: Download the demo of each (Parallels offers better 3D performances; Fusion is more robust and comes from a better company), install Windows (preferably XP) and check what works best. I haven't tried the latest version of each program, but starting with the previous version of Parallels , running FFvsTTR pr the CT was A1.

I had tried Parallels before, but couldn't get some things to run, so I went ahead and got bootcamp. I just didn't want to have to install photoshop on both partitions. Do you think Parallels would be a good idea/take up less space, or should I just put photoshop on the windows side?

Was this with the latest version? Then maybe you'll have better luck with Fusion? Some games or 3D programs, etc. will not work well under any virtualization solution of course.

You could use the boot camp partition as the source for your virtual machine. That's what I did at first; however there's a slight speed penalty and you lose the virtual machine's suspend and snapshot capabilities. As for space, my experience has been that you actually use more under virtualization, because of the snapshots ? they are too valuable to pass up.

Until Adobe bundle the Mac and the Windows version together? no.

Hmmm... Well thanks for the info! I will ponder on this further.
