Title: Completely confused
Post by: nworobes on February 16, 2010, 01:53:40 AM
I'm a newcomer to Freedom Force, and I'm enjoying it so far. I'm trying to use some custom skins and meshes, but I'm running into problems.

Specifically, I'm trying to use Ewzzy's Dr. McNinja.

I've read some tutorials and FAQs on how to add in custom skins and meshes, but I still haven't had any luck with this one. I'm not completely incompetent, as I tried out some other meshes and skins and I was able to get them to work correctly. But I can't seem to get Ewzzy's to work, and I have no idea why. I unzip it and move the files to the custom_characters folder, but the game doesn't recognize the mesh and I end up with the giant white box of failure.

Does anyone know why this isn't working for me? Do I have to rename any of the files or folders? Do I have to distribute some of the files in the .zip to places that aren't immediately apparent?

Woah, calm down with the threads, buddy. You only needed one. It sounds like you're trying to install the mesh (more likely a skope) into Freedom Force 1. Unfortunately, that particular creation is for FFv3R only.

Ah, thanks. That might explain it. I think you're right about it being a skope, as that is mentioned in the readme. Although I'm not entirely sure what that means.

For future reference, is there an easy way to tell whether something is compatible with Freedom Force 1 or not? The .zip seemed to contain the usual character.nif, keyframes.kf, and skins folder containing .tga files, so nothing seemed amiss.

Other than the keyframe naming system (character.kf), not off hand. Usually, creators say whether or not their stuff will work with both games. I guess Ewzzy forgot.

A "skope" is a mesh created in a tool called NifSkope, which lets you copy pieces from one mesh to another. Meshes that are not skopes are created in 3dstudio max.
NifSkope can identify the type of mesh, 4.2.2.0 means FF (many of which will work in FFv3r either as is, or after converting with a "nifconverter"), and 10.0.1.0 is FFv3r, (if you highlight a nitrishape (ie a bit of a mesh) and look at the "block details"). Of course, it's easier to read a readme if there is one.

If you open the character.nif with a plain text editor, while a lot of what there will be unreadable at the very top of the file it will say "NetImmerse File Format, Version 4.0.0.2" if it's a FF1 mesh (which means if might work in FF2 - see up thread) or it will say "Gamebryo File Format, Version 10.1.0.0" if it's a FF2 only mesh.

There are other differences, but this is something that can be viewed with just Notepad.
