Title: Batman: Under the Hood
Post by: Silver Shocker on February 10, 2010, 08:32:38 AM
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2010/02/new-batman-dvd-to-peek-out-from-under-the-red-hood.html

Voice cast is very interesting. Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing? COOL!  Don't know about John DiMaggio (Bender from Futurama) as the Joker. That....I'll have to hear.

But most importantly, how the heck are they going to adapt a Jason Todd story into a DVD movie?

NPH as Nightwing - now that I'll have to hear. To be honest it doesn't seem like a good match to me but I'm probably just thinking of him too much as Barney.

I'm wondering if the voice you refer to isn't just a voice over for the trailer.  Batman speaks one actual line in the trailer and it struck me as being quite different from the "narrator."

I think they were both Bat-Man's voice.  The "who do you work for?" was ok, but the beginning, the "Night after night I watch over the city...." sounded like a Baldwin was doing the voice.

Well thanks to the internet the movie is out, sigh, it's not bad, very dark.  I hated the Joker in this one.  Try to imagine a "thug" like guy (square jawed and all) with the joker personality and a very deep voice.

Just watched this. Its a great movie all around! Wasnt too big on JLA on 2 Earths but this one rocked.
From the voice actors and story to great fight scenes (final battle is prolly the best Batman movie fight ever).

The key dialogues are copied from the comics which is always good.
There`s actually a change to a key plot element that actually works better than the comic one
Spoiler
Jason is resurrected by Ra`s Al Ghul because he was the one who hired Joker but he didnt want him to kill the boy, so no Super Boy reality changing punch or crap like that.

I saw it as well. Liked it, but HATED the Joker's voice. It would have been oodles better if Mark Hamil had done the Joker.

I felt like they were trying to tie their joker less to the typical Hamil performance and more to the TDK movie (which I felt was unnescessary, but who am I?). Still, it was fairly inconsequential overall... despite his major role in the plot, he didn't really stand out at any point. His primary role was to be there in the opening and final scenes.

Gotta say, this was a very solid film. Rented it last week off iTunes and was pretty impressed.

Thoughts on the much-discussed casting:
-Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing was AWESOME. Hands down the best performance of the film, and I wish he was in more.
-Greenwood as Batman was alright.. no Kevin Conroy, but it still worked for me.
-John DiMaggio as Joker, on the other hand.... reeeeally didn't work for me most of the time... the final scene with the Joker, where he's being beaten to a pulp, had some lines where I said to myself "This almost works", but the entire flashback where the Joker is beating Jason... that just REALLY rang false for me. I know they were going for the thug/sadist Joker, but it just didn't capture the Joker's gleeful insanity, and I heard a little too much Bender on certain lines, ha. I guess on the bright side it was better than the Joker from Brave and the Bold, haha.
That being said, the overall cast worked, and it was all very well acted.

DC Entertainment is definitely upholding its reputation of very solid direct-to-DVD releases. Like other recent DC Universe animated movies, this one had great production quality. The animation, direction, sound design, etc. was all superb. It's nice to see an animated movie like this really be treated as a dramatic, serious film.

One of the things I was most impressed by was that the team on this movie managed to take the convoluted story of Jason Todd/The Red Hood and turn it into one concise story that actually worked. That was pretty cool. I'm guessing DC probably has plans for the Red Hood judging by the fact that they're trying to make him a relevant character here.

So, overall, very entertaining, a very solid film, and a great effort from DC Entertainment! Lookin' forward to Superman/Batman Apocalypse now! I loved that comic arc, heh.

Yeah I agree, they did a good job with Jason's story.

I like the movie too. Probably one of my favorite DC movies, though Return of the Joker is probably my favorite. I was kinda eh on the voice acting. Joker was blah, and I wasn't huge on NPH as Nightwing. Everyone else was alright. It's hard to follow Hamill and Conroy, they were so good at their roles and have been doing them for so long.

I love how many things they just *got right*
The in-continuity hints ("crippling a friend")
the 1989 movie Batwing and Batmobile
Cameos from Talia and the Riddler
The Javier Pulido styled Robin
- Just a solid movie all around

Yeah it is VERY good.  Best I'd still have to give to Crisis on Two Earths.

Excellent work again from DC!  I still feel the movie was too short though.  Why do they have only about 75min to tell the story?
