Title: Freedom force skins, meshes, heroes???
Post by: jaws on February 02, 2010, 02:36:27 AM
Of course I new : ) ...VERY NEW!!!  Anyway I bought these two games  :ff:  :ffvstr: from the Steam sale for my kids.  I thought I could download Spiderman, Batman, etc and mods.  I've been reading for several hours and I've signed up for several Yahoo groups to get files.

I think I've discovered that hero files are for specific attributes of the heroes, but you still need a mesh to make the body look right and then a skin to make it recognizable.  So I would need to download three different things right???  I do have the hero attributes showing up on my gamescreen for them all but I have to pick an in-game skin and none look like spidey.

I've downloaded the spiderman2099 hero with that whole package.  Where can I find the skins and meshes for these guys...or are they out there?  I have searched and I've just determined that I don't understand what I need to do.

Any fun mods for a 9 year old to play.  I've read the tutorial several times and I think I may be able to get it if I can find skins...the hero files do not have the file extensions mentioned in the tutorials.  TIA

Welcome to the boards....
Don't worry, there is a lot of stuff out there and it can be a bit overwhelming if you jump in with both feet.

Couple links that should help:
http://freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php?topic=50675.0 - this is a comprehensive list of tutorials that should help you
http://ffportal.negative-10.com/ - a fairly up to date collection of links to FF stuff
http://www.alexff.com/ - home of Alex's hero tool which is pretty much essential is you are going to be messing with hero files.

Basically a hero file tells the game what a certain characters powers and attributes are as well as the mesh/skin used and other data. Each hero file looks for a certain mesh and skin file (determined by whomever created it). If you are planning to download other people's hero files (as opposed to making your own in game) you should download Alex's EZHero. This will allow you to open up hero files and view/change mesh/skin attributes which the game wont let you do. That really is the only way to figure out which mesh and skin the hero file uses.

To add onto what Goggles already said, if you're looking to play mods, check this thread out: http://freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php?topic=48992.0

Thanks for the replies and I apologize for seeming stupid.

I tried alexff's ezhero download and I get an error message that a file is missing or invalid (3 times.)

To make sure I understand this though, when I downloaded the hero files from USAgent's yahoo site the skin and meshes are not attached as the file extensions are all .hero and .m25ai  Because of this the skins and meshes need to be developed by me using Alexff's exhero tool, or does somebody have skins and meshes for these specific hero files.

I placed all the hero files in the C:\Documents and Settings\localuser\Local Settings\Application Data\Irrational Games\Freedom Force vs the 3rd Reich\Custom\Heroes

I downloaded a skin from heroforce.com and placed it in this file C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\freedom force vs. the 3rd reich\Custom\Art\library\characters.  Now I have a Batman Skin that I attached to another hero (hulk or somebody I just picked one to test.)

When I go to the campaign I can not select the Batman character to play and the default girl hero comes up???  How do I get Batman to play.  Thanks again.

Also, will these bleed over and work in  :ff: or should I download everything there also?

You downloaded a "skin," not a mesh. A "mesh" is an actual body that you can select from the "create a character" screen. A skin... is exactly what one might think: the flesh of a body, or in this case, a mesh.

Please check out this site to see if you get a better understanding: http://frworld.wikispaces.com/Installing+skins+and+meshes and http://alexff.com/faq.php
------------

Herofiles are just character makeups. They do not come with meshes or skins. They only tell what a character will be capable of doing in the game.

.m25ai is an AI extension for FFX/m25 AI that gives a computer controllable character a more advanced play style.

As for whether or not installing meshes and skins into one game and hoping they will "bleed" into the other, I'm sorry to inform you that they will not. Freedom Force and FFvtTR each have their own custom directories and while they are mostly compatible, they are not 100% harmonious with each other.
------------

If you really want to understand this stuff, check out the links you were given above and take it slow. Focus on installing a mesh first. Once you get that down, then try a skin. Top it off with installing a herofile until you get comfortable. I think you're doing a little too much, which is resulting in your major confusion.

best advice?  download a mod and start with that.  you will get to play as batman or spiderman, and worry about skins and meshes later.
mods sort of put everything together for you.  all you have to do is install.

Thanks This is what I needed...my kids just want to see spiderman/batman running across the screen beating up bad guys.

I've have spent many hours reading information from many sites and I probably am going too fast and not sequencing right...but I assure you before asking I did my due diligence.  I was installing a hero and then trying to get a skin followed by a mesh.  Thanks for setting me straight on the right order mesh, skin, and then hero.

Thanks again for everyone's responses I'm off to find a mod!!!

Here's how I like to think of it:

A mesh (NIF) file defines the shape of the figure. Think of it as an unpainted action figure.

A skin (TGA) file defines the colors. It's the paint job on your action figure.

A keyframes file defines how the figure can move. It's the joints and articulation of the action figure. Many keyframes are designed to work with one particular mesh, but some work with more than one mesh.

A hero file is what turns the action figure into a character. It defines the character's powers and abilities within the game, as well as which mesh and skin to use.
