From my point of view, Webcomics are comics. Different medium, fewer 'professionals', but still... And don't forget that the really good ones tend to get printed as collections.
We don't really talk about them much here. I suspect I'm probably missing out on some really good webcomics because nobody here talks about them.
So let's start talking about them.
Up for discussion is the latest installment of "Looking For Group" (http://www.lfgcomic.com)
http://www.lfgcomic.com/page/326
To give a brief synopsis, Cale'Anon is a good member of an evil race of elves. He and his friends are in the process of reviving the legendary kingdom of Kethenicia across the sea. The Northern races have lost a war against the evil kingdom of Legaria and Cale has persuaded the survivors to relocate to Kethenicia. Cale and his friends are now seeking a magical portal to return there, but are being opposed by Knights of the Way who guard the portal.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
Spoiler
The leader of the Knights of the Way is revealed to be an adult Princess Leena, whom we have previously seen as a little girl and also as a ghost called the 'Shriek'. (It's complicated...) Cale has just asked Leena to explain how this has happened. As is usual, Richard the undead warlock provides a bit of comedy relief as a disembodied head. I find myself wondering a few things:
What happened to Pella (dwarf) and the other Rage (minotaurs)? What did the Knights do to them?
What happened to the rest of Richard's body?
Is there a possible love triangle developing here? I see Benny (orc priestess) standing next to Cale and we know they've had a little tryst. Across from her I see Leena, who is a very pretty elf...
WHY SHOULD YOU READ IT?
As always, the artwork is great. I'm really interested to see how the plot develops; Sohmer and DeSouza are very good at keeping the surprises coming and Cale has come a long way from the innocent soul he started out as. All of the characters have been developed over time, making for a very interesting cast. Best of all, the series has a great sense of humor. Richard the undead warlock really shines as the comedy relief and the funniest lines usually come from him.
WARNING:
The series often depicts people being slaughtered and Richard's gruesome antics. The humor can be very black at times. Probably not suitable for anyone under the age of 13.
So, post a review of one of your favorite webcomics!
LFG? Seriously? That comic is going nowhere really, really slowly. So slowly it found itself kicked out of my RSS feed a few weeks back because I'd read it just for the sake of reading it. The jokes range from predictable (anything Richard says) to non-existent. In fact, it seems to struggle with whether it wants to be a plot-type comic or a joke a day comic. Maybe if I'd played more WoW I'd appreciate it, but it's really not for me...
Now, for my idea of what a fantasy RPG-based comic should be like, I present the superb Order of the Stick. Granted, the art is not up to much, but the jokes are consistently funny and the plot has become ever more intricate (just like a good RPG should).
I have a feeling that most of my tastes are rather darker than others here (web and other comics-wise) so I enjoy Something Positive and Cyanide and Happiness makes me smile only slightly less often than it makes me cringe. I remember recommending FreakAngels to people last time it was mentioned; it's still good and free. Subnormality is wordy but generally good and occasionally superb. I've been reading Sluggy Freelance for about 8 years so I'm not going to stop now. For other things you probably already read that I like, see Megatokyo, Girl Genius, Questionable Content, Penny Arcade, VG Cats 8-bit Theater (although I'm slowly starting to prefer Warbot), XKCD and Hark, A Vagrant. There are plenty more, but those are the ones I am always happy to see in the old feed reader.
For a (relatively) unknown comic that everyone should read, I can recommend Dresden Codak. This was the most brilliant thing I saw in 2009: http://dresdencodak.com/2009/01/27/advanced-dungeons-and-discourse/
Sorry, Enigma... LFG hasn't gotten old for me just yet. As to the slow pace, well, Girl Genius is only moderately faster at advancing the plot.
Like LFG, although a lot happens the heroes don't seem to get very far in a week (I've lost track how long they've been in Mechanicsburg and Agatha still isn't the officially resident Heterodyne). But I'm a patient fellow and that kind of detailed artwork does not come easily or quickly. Girl Genius is also on my list of webcomics I like and I plan to do a semi-official review of that one, too.
I doubt I'll be telling most of the people here something they don't already know, but I'm hoping this will catch on. I might find new favorites in somebody else's list.
By the by, please post links to the webcomics you like. I can Google 'em, but links are friendlier.

Randall Munroe might be the nerdiest/best person on the planet. Sometimes I have to get on wikipedia to get it but that's probably because I'm just a terrible engineer.
http://www.evil-comic.com/ - Evil, Inc.
http://www.cad-comic.com/cad/ - Ctrl+Alt+Del
http://www.pvponline.com/ - PvP
http://www.sinfest.net/ - Sinfest
None of these are appropriate for kids, and I'd avoid Sinfest if you're deeply religious, as its downright blasphemous most of the time. (Note: I believe in God, but not in organized religion)
Yeah, I avoided links due to the adult content (Cyanide and Happiness is not appropriate for those with eyes and an imagination). As to plot speed, you're right. Girl Genius is just as glacial (and Sluggy and QC and Megatokyo are all slower - slow pace alone doesn't put me off something) but I like the universe so much more. Sparks and steampunk is just that much cooler for me than LFG's rather, er, obvious inspirations. Still, each to his own and all that. Let me know if it becomes really epically cool at any point and I'll dive back in.
Wow, the Enigma almost quoted all the webcomics i read ^^
http://questionablecontent.net/ (http://questionablecontent.net/) Nice story, published almost daily. They sell nice t-shirt too.

http://www.goblinscomic.com/ (http://www.goblinscomic.com/) goblin! Probably the best art i've seen in a webcomic. DnD from the poitn of view of goblins. My second favorite webcomics, and only because it's only one strip a week (but when you see the quality of the art and coloring you get why he needs the time)
http://xkcd.com/ (http://xkcd.com/) the nerdiest webcomic on earth

oh and i almost forgot that one:
http://batmanandsons.blogspot.com/ (http://batmanandsons.blogspot.com/) Batman and sons! It's fun and cute, but mostly cute.
Speaking of PvP, it looks like there just -might- be a new storyline starting based on Star Trek Online. Or it might not...
http://www.pvponline.com/2010/01/28/first-contact/
I think Kurtz is at his funniest when he's doing a parody of some game, so I hope so. I don't always like PvP, but it does have its moments.
On the other hand, it sounds like he's gearing up to do public appearances again... which usually means guest artists... which is definitely a hit-or-miss proposition.
Okay, looks like the STO thing may have been a one-shot... which in my opinion made it kind of lame. PvP is back to mildly humorous Apple worship in today's strip.
I know I said I'd review Girl Genius, but there's no point. I'm guessing most of you already know about it and unless we're discussing something specific it's a waste of time. I'll make it simple: steampunk, gaslamp, and mad science. Written and drawn by Phil Foglio of Dragon Magazine and Myth Adventures fame. If you aren't already, go read it: http://www.girlgeniusonline.com. Start at the beginning. It'll be worth it.
Another webcomic that should be on your must-read list if you're a Sci-Fi fan is Schlock Mercenary: http://www.schlockmercenary.com. It follows the humorous misadventures of Tagon's Toughs, a team of interstellar mercenaries in the 31st century who very often find themselves in the middle of intrigue on an interstellar scale. The title character is Sergeant Schlock, a carbosilicate amorph who most resembles a shapechanging pile of poo and loves shooting his handheld plasma cannons. The humor ranges from sophisticated to crude and scatological. If you start at the beginning, the artwork is pretty bad but you can pick up references for later storylines. The current artwork is decent and the storylines are very good, very well thought out in my opinion. I recommend starting here (http://www.schlockmercenary.com/d/20080229.html) to get a handle on the current storyline and going back to read older stories as needed.
I'd highly recommend Axe Cop:
axecop.com
Drawn by a professional comic artist and written by his 5 year old son, its the closest thing to Flaming Carrot without being Flaming Carrot.
Today's Girl Genius: Tarvek fights a mechanical menace to save Agatha's life!
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20100203
(But... isn't she dead???)
(Yes. Don't worry about it. Think 'Mad Science'.)
I'm not sure how I feel about this part of the storyline. As if Agatha didn't have enough going on to try to establish herself as the Heterodyne heir, this feels like an unnecessary diversion. I want her to get on with fixing the Castle and dealing with the Baron. Got to admit it's exciting, though. One cliffhanger after another.
It's also establishing Tarvek as a worthy rival for Gil. He's making up for some of his earlier misdeeds in spades.
I have mixed feelings about the artwork, especially this "Muse of Protection". The detail is fantastic, but the figure is... off. Plus you have this large mechanical valkyrie interacting with much shorter humans... so he's got it crouching or he's playing around with the perspective to make it fit the frame and it's not working very well. I have a feeling he should've made it a little smaller but having established the size already he's stuck with it. The two other muses we've seen weren't nearly that big, but I've got to admit it looks formidible.
This is why I read Girl Genius:

Spoiler
"Ah! Got a fire here!"
"I'm on that! Looks like an overloaded junction router! Do you have any butter?"
"Uh..."
"Nevermind, I brought my own!"
Sparks are fun when they get all mad-science-y.
Excellent day for webcomics!
Girl Genius is back in technicolor!
In PvP, the LOLbat is at the mercy of the Grammar Nazi! (If I didn't know he'd be rescued, I'd be even happier...)
But the best, best, best so far is a treat for the Lantern fans over in Evil, Inc. It's even a treat for anyone who's blah on the whole 'emotional spectrum' gig: The best parody of the Lanterns I've seen yet. Enjoy!

Today in PvP, the most annoying superhero LOLbat has an even more annoying sidekick forced on him by circumstances. There is justice.

(The strip has an amusing twist at the end, or it would have been blah otherwise.)
And over in Starslip, Vanderbeam has just finished a flashback about the events right before the attack that killed his beloved Jovia. The flashback was brought on by a real attack of opportunity during a fleet training exercise by a rival ship captain. Beams suddenly gets his Kirk on and I think we're about to see some smackdown. This is gonna be good!

Blip:www.blipcomic.com (http://www.blipcomic.com):Good webcomic when the creator decides to update with actual pages instead of random art. Though he has been fairly consistent of late. Story of a girl who was born outside of "God's Plan". It's more nonsensical comedy oriented then the description would lead you to believe. Updates everyday.
Let's Be Friends Again: www.letsbefriendsagain.com (http://www.letsbefriendsagain.com): Random joke a day comic mostly about comic books. Updates once a week.
Shi Long Pang: www.shilongpang.com (http://www.shilongpang.com): Follows the adventures of a Shaolin monk traveling through Ancient China during a time of turmoil as he looks for his lost brothers (monk brothers not siblings). Slow to update but there are enough pages to keep you busy for a while. Good story thus far.
Dresden Codak: www.dresdencodak.com (http://www.dresdencodak.com): The smartest webcomic on the internet. Period end of story. Though it takes forever and a day for it to update.

Seedless: www.reyyy.com/seedless (http://www.reyyy.com/seedless) : This series often times makes no sense but the art is bizarre and the story is even more out there. Thus far it's DBZ meets Ninja Turtles but the main characters are all grapes. Updates Wed
Between Failures: www.betweenfailures.com (http://www.betweenfailures.com) : Story of a group of twenty somethings working in a dead end retail chain and blah blah blah. What elevates this above some of the other webcomics of similar themes is the humor. Updates MWF
multiplex: www.multiplex.com (http://www.multiplex.com) : The webcomic for the filmgeeks and snobs out there. Group of friends who work at a movie theater and make snarky comments about upcoming films, currently showing films, and there is also social interactions blah blah blah, more movie jokes. Updates wed.
Superfogeys: http://www.th3rdworld.com/web-comic/The-SuperFogeys (http://www.th3rdworld.com/web-comic/The-SuperFogeys) : Where do superheroes go when they retire, to Valhalla of course! The superhuman retirement home! Updates once a week, forget what day.

Good list, Ajax. I started reading Let's Be Friends Again and am really enjoying it. Anyone who can use the line "You know who got 'sued' last night? Reed Richards." really appeals to my sense of humour. I'll have to explore some of the others in due course but thanks for the recommendation.

I hadn't seen this webcomic listed yet, so I thought I'd share:
Darths & Droids, at http://www.darthsanddroids.net/ (http://www.darthsanddroids.net/)
What if the plotline of Episodes I, II, and III of the Star Wars movies could be explained via the scenario that it was a Games Master running an RPG for some unpredictable players? The webcomic uses still frames from the movies, with word balloons and the like added to tell a new take on the story. Scrolling further down the screen for each comic, you'll find commentary by the webcomic's authors about the nature of stereotypical gamers.
Suddenly, the inclusion of Jar-Jar Binks makes a lot more sense - he's the result of one of the gamers bringing his much-younger sister to the gaming sessions. And if the film has a sequence of chompy, crushy conveyor belts? That was the day that the GM was sick, and the munchkin power-gamer took the reins of running the gaming session.
Yeah, Darths and Droids is rather good (I might even dare to say better than DM of the Rings - http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?cat=14). I'm really looking forward to how they move on to the original trilogy. I'm looking forward to seeing how Anakin turns into an evil NPC and stuff.
Webcomics are still a big deal, eh? Gosh, I haven't read these since I stopped making them, back in 2005.
Well, not entirely true. I stopped following strips then though, but I read through a couple of good things since then. One with a robot detective. One with some guys fighting a fairy world. One that was very pulp fiction. Except now I can't remember any!
It's good to see they are still kicking though. In various qualities.
I really liked "DM of the Rings"! I'll have to start in on "Darths and Droids" when I get the chance.

The past few weeks have been a flashback to Cale's early life in a monastery. While there he met, fell in love with, and secretly married a female elf named Shora.
Cale is betrayed by --
Spoiler
His mentor, the Master of the monastery, who causes him to believe Shora is unfaithful. Cale runs away. The Master then shockingly kills Shora in cold-blood to insure that Cale will never return and will go forth to meet his destiny. Afterward, we see a familiar silhouette and red-lined black word balloon that tells us Richard the Warlock was on hand.
I can't be sure, but it seems to be a brilliant retcon of the circumstances in which Cale and Richard first meet. Add to that the simple fact that --
Spoiler
Cale's Master was previously seen feeding a rabbit that looks a lot like the one Richard later adopted as a pet, and that this rabbit is more than likely the same shapeshifted archwizard who's been working behind the scenes for awhile now --

And earlier comics where a raider's head exploded and a "dark man" saved Cale's life from raiders --
http://www.lfgcomic.com/page/344
http://www.lfgcomic.com/page/346
And it seems that someone has been pulling Cale's strings for a very long time. All that's missing is Richard's role and true motivations in all of this. And it will be interesting to find out what Cale does if and when he finds out just how he has been heartlessly manipulated.
OOTS, Darths and Droids, DM of the Rings, XKCD, Girl Genius, LFG....
Only major webcomic I read that's not been recommended here is Weregeek (http://www.weregeek.com), which is just phenomenal. Moves quickly, covers all manner of geek topics, and delves into the personality of the characters outside of their geek activities.
As a public service, I am relaying an announcement by Ryan Sohmer of a new webcomic which is to launch this month:
QuoteClearly the amount of projects that we?re juggling is nowhere near enough to cause that heart attack I?m going for, so it only made sense to add a little something to the load.
For the last few months, Lar and I have been working on a new comic, which we have recently named ?Gutters?.
In brief, Gutters is a series of stand alone pages that parody the comic book industry and the heroes and characters that dwell within. Think of it as an editorial cartoon targeting comic books, and you?ll understand where we?re going with it.
While I?ll be writing Gutters, Lar will be the art director with Ed Ryzowski serving as colorist. As for who will be doing the actual art, well, that?s where things get interesting (and slightly different). Rather than have one artist pencil each page, we elected to have a rotating roster of professional artists, among them are some giants in the comic book industry alongside new and emerging talent. This way, in addition to what I hope will be a humorous comic, Gutters will also be an ongoing showcase of art.
That said, Lar demanded that he be the one to put together the first page (who am I to argue with the man?), and as such, we thought to tease you a little with the penciled version (click to view larger version):
Spoiler
(http://static.leasticoulddo.com/uploads/nwv.jpg)
Gutters will launch in June, and will update three times a week. Check this space for more info.
The pencil is pretty funny... if that's what they're going to put out on a regular basis, I'm in.
heh that's pretty good. I could see myself checking that out.
Gutters has officially launched!
If you'd like to see the fully colorized version of the ink I linked to, go here:
http://www.the-gutters.com/ (http://www.the-gutters.com/)
If you're wondering about the name of the webcomic and what it's got to do with comic books... (I know I did):
QuoteDefinition: The inside margins or blank space between two facing pages is the gutter. The gutter space is that extra space allowance used to accommodate the binding in books and magazines. The amount of gutter needed varies depending on the binding method.
In saddled-stitched publications the amount of gutter, as well as the outside margins are adjusted to allow for creep. Gutter is sometimes used to refer to the alley or space between columns of text in a page layout. .
Definition of gutter pulled from here: http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/pagelayout/g/gutter.htm (http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/pagelayout/g/gutter.htm)
Webcomic Quote of the Day:
Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php): "Some people are natural minions."
In other news, over at Weregeek (http://www.weregeek.com/2010/06/16/) we learn about the mating habits of Vulcans and ferrets. Who says webcomics aren't educational?
And finally, the 2nd issue of Gutters (http://www.the-gutters.com/comic/2-guy-allen) will appeal to Randy Ripoff and anyone weary of Deadpool-proliferation.
Thank you so much for the Weregeek recommendation, guys (well, CarpeGuitarrem). It is really rather brilliant. I like the characterisation and different layers of the story. Although the hunters/weregeek plot is just odd and seems like a mixture of:
1. the author wanting something beyond the "real life" stories and the roleplaying stories.
2. the author playing too many games leading to her belief that the real world should be more like them.
3. trying to avoid "just another gaming comic" syndrome - even if it is, at least, not about video games (mostly).
4. an awkward hangover from the start of the comic that can't entirely be abandoned because (I assume) a part of the readership likes it and the author's kind of invested in it.
Mostly it makes me wish my vampire LARP group could be cajoled into goth clubs after games.

Today's Wednesday Roundup: What did we learn today?
Dr. McNinja (http://drmcninja.com/archives/comic/17p82) gives us a demonstration of the calorie-burning effects of eye lasers. To think all this time people have been wasting with bariatric surgery when they could have had a laser implanted...
Gutters (http://www.the-gutters.com/comic/5-gregory-titus) provides us with a short history lesson. You'd think DC would have mentioned something like that...
Over at Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20100623), we learn Pinky has a brain. And some darn good moves, too.
There's a free flying lesson at Myth Adventures (http://www.airshipentertainment.com/mythcomic.php?date=20100622).
Miss Match gives a practical lecture on moral relativity over at Evil, Inc (http://www.evil-comic.com/archive/20100623.html).
PvP (http://www.pvponline.com/2010/06/22/cant-handle-the-smoot/) teaches us a bit about journalism and legal issues and how to avoid nasty lawsuits.
And today Weregeek (http://www.weregeek.com/2010/06/23/) teaches me that there are limits to my geekness... 'cause I didn't really find that funny.
Go check out today's Gutters and then come back here:

I love the irony here. The X-men rode the zombie trend for awhile, now they're jumping back on the vampire trend with the buzz around Twilight, True Blood, and other vampire-related media. Logan's rightly tired of the X-men following every re-trend that comes along, but his response is to jump onto the Origins trend.
Granted, this isn't the first time the X-men have tangled with Dracula. I recall the Dracula-Storm thing years ago. It wasn't a great storyline, pretty much a standard Dracula-spectacula with added mutant action. I'm curious whether this will be a departure from any Dracula stories Marvel has done before, or just another bloodsucker. But not curious enough to spend money on it.
I'm really enjoying watching Gutters put a spotlight on some of the (*AHEM*) odd decisions being made in mainstream comics these days. I haven't enjoyed any of them nearly as much as that first one, but I have appreciated the subtle irony underneath the broad parody in these comics.
Today's Gutters is hilarious!
http://www.the-gutters.com/comic/18-corey-kramer
Haven't posted in awhile, mainly because there hasn't been a whole lot notable to post about.
So, I thought I'd post about that!
Gutters started out really strong, but lately it has stunk on ice. Poor artwork and lame gags. Literally gagging, if you read Monday's installment. A large part of this has been due to convention schedules, it seems, so I'm hoping they go back to the brilliant satire and great artwork that made me recommend it in the first place.
I'm trying to follow Weregeek, I really am, but lately it just isn't grabbing me. For one thing, it's currently following a Shadowrun storyline. Now, I like cyberpunk, but I can't stand Shadowrun and the Weregeek version is even lamer than the real thing. Before that, it was basically gamers sitting around talking about gaming. For the most part I haven't found it witty or funny. The author really needs to get back to the weregeek premise and maybe the Vampire LARP where the storyline shines.
A lot of Webcomics update on Wednesdays, so hopefully tomorrow will see good developments.
I'm a former Shadowrunner, and I wish they'd get that storyline in Weregeek over, too.
I kinda like Shadowrun, but it is easily the most boring and predictable of the games they've got in Weregeek. Even more than D&D, which I didn't think was possible! I'm kinda hoping to see more in-character romance leading to out-of-character sexual tension. Whether Pete's going to deliver on that, time will tell.
Also, I still enjoy it more than the stuff about the weregeeks, which seems to be terribly out of place in an otherwise entirely realistic comic. Every time it comes up, I find my suspension of disbelief horribly shattered.

It's not interesting, or funny. Even today's so-called "twist" was entirely predictable and I fully expect the "Myers" character continue to flip sides like an omelette.
Quote from: The Enigma on August 11, 2010, 06:26:46 AMI'm kinda hoping to see more in-character romance leading to out-of-character sexual tension.
That has easily been the most interesting thread running through the series, but the author can't beat it to death or rush it if that tension is going to be maintained. So I understand why it's being dragged out.

Except that the weregeeks stuff is a central theme for the whole series. The cool part of it is that you really can't be sure that it's not just imaginary, since we never see a weregeek exposed publicly. The geeks themselves don't seem to be aware of it. If it weren't for the Hunters, you'd have to conclude that it's just imaginary, or a visual allegory for impulsive/compulsive geek behavior, or symbolic of how people hide their true natures in daily life but manage to express themselves through role-play. You can't really even be sure that it isn't simply a delusion on the part of The Hunter. There are a lot of unresolved threads there.
Given how much of the webcomic is about people role-playing as other people, and how the perspective shifts from imaginary scenario to imaginary scenario, I don't find it quite as jarring as you do.
In regard to Sunday's Schlock Mercenary (http://www.schlockmercenary.com/d/20100815.html)...

And over at Looking for Group today, nothing special except for a not-so-subtle bit of humor regarding the control of sand dragons using a familiar-looking artifact (http://www.lfgcomic.com/page/383).
Other than that, nothing too noteworthy so far.

I kinda like Shadowrun, but it is easily the most boring and predictable of the games they've got in Weregeek.
It's not interesting, or funny. Even today's so-called "twist" was entirely predictable and I fully expect the "Myers" character continue to flip sides like an omelette.
I think we agree here.

That has easily been the most interesting thread running through the series, but the author can't beat it to death or rush it if that tension is going to be maintained. So I understand why it's being dragged out.
Again, I think we agree about this too. It's the best bit, which is why I'd like to see more.

Quote from: The Enigma on August 11, 2010, 06:26:46 AMAlso, I still enjoy it more than the stuff about the weregeeks, which seems to be terribly out of place in an otherwise entirely realistic comic. Every time it comes up, I find my suspension of disbelief horribly shattered.
Yeah, basically I see the Weregeek stuff as leftover from the origin of the comic. It was intended to be this cool, mysterious thing that the comic would be all about but basically it was introduced with the author having no idea where it was going - rather like many RPG campaigns, it got derailed when the GM and the players found something better to do in that world. I can't prove that allegation, but the fact that there have been so few revelations about exactly what's happening and the characters all basically ignore it the rest of the time makes me think it's something she slightly regrets putting in the comic in the first place. At the same time, some of the fanbase do like it, it can be read as a (pretty blunt) allegory and there's basically storyline time invested in it - not to mention the name of the comic - so it's probably not disappearing any time soon.
I think the comic actually manages to be unique - jokes about Wonder Woman's costume aside - without needing that extra layer (whether it's just another real world plot thread to contrast the social/romance stuff, or a metacommentary on the nature of roleplayers or whatever) and has enough going for it without that. Until Pete works out where she's taking it, I think that storyline should be quietly buried. Besides, whichever fan theory she chooses will probably be pretty bland and disappointing.

Yep, that was at least chuckle-worthy :)
Enigma, I think you have a good point... Weregeek has just about the same focus as your average RPG campaign. Except there's nobody to derail the plot except the author.
Changing topics, can anyone explain to me why today's Gutters (http://www.the-gutters.com/comic/29-geoff-sebesta) is supposed to be funny? 'Cause I'm nnnot gettin' it.
Ok, Gutters has officially hit bottom. I'm so disgusted, I'm not even going to link to it this time.
If I could drop it from a pull list, I would. Between the lately unfunny strips and subpar artwork and this, I would not want to pay for it if it weren't free.
I am referring to today's installment, a 'costume modification' that makes Superman look like a certain religious figure, right down to the wounded hands. To lampoon a bad Superman costume, fine, but some lines of taste and decency shouldn't be crossed.
I know the line between funny and offensive can be blurry at times. And I also know that parody is very likely to skirt that line more often than not. But I find it difficult to believe that the folks running Gutters aren't very aware how offensive some people would find today's strip.
And now we have irony in the highest degree. The stated intent of Gutters was to parody the comic book industry. We often wonder how the comics industry justifies some of the poor decisions they make that are guaranteed to offend their readership. We don't like it when our favorite characters are mangled by a writer who doesn't get or respect their history, or by an editorial staff whose goal is to produce hype and controversy. And I thought the guys over at Gutters got that.
Until they produced a strip that was guaranteed to offend part of their readership and that disrespected and mangled an iconic 'character', apparently with the goal of producing controversy.
Shame on them.
NO. I wholeheartly disagree with everything you said here.
Gutters was on a break, the last few strips were comissions from other artists (hence the not funny part)
And Superman as Jesus is a good joke. His last storyline of him walking through the country to reconnect with the everyday man's problem plus his late history of being written like a perfect innocent pure being with god like power makes a parralel between the two understandable (from the logical point of view i mean). DC makes clear reference to the superman = jesus equation in some of their title. Gutters is just suggesting that they cut to the chase.
As for being offended, dare i remember that all the western world condemned the muslim for their reaction to their prophet's caricature? Apart from the death threat, how is your reaction any different? Why should religion be a topic any different in parody? If he had dressed him like Gandhi or the Buddah, would you have been offended?
As for intending to create controversy...The guy write "least i could do", probably the most successful webcomic out here; he clearly doesn't need any publicity.

You know what? I found that just as distasteful, though I am not a muslim. So please don't set this up like I'm being intolerant and narrow minded and favoring one religious group over the next. I don't see any good in making fun of other people's deepest convictions. I may not agree with them, but that doesn't mean I should stop treating them with dignity.
And let's not take the religion argument any farther. I would prefer not to have this whole thread shut down.
My point is, the pot is calling the kettle black as far as Gutters calling out the industry's mistakes, IMO. This was a mistake that's just as bad as anything Marvel or DC ever came up with.
It's not like he's been put on the cross or anything. Yeesh, some guy dies and for 2000 years, we never hear the end of it...
Ok, so I don't have any deeply held religious beliefs, but it's just a drawing. It's not hurting you, or shaking your beliefs to the core, it's just making fun of how Superman's being written. JMS LOVES writing characters in a Jesus-type way - there's a huge one in Babylon 5 where
Spoiler
Sheridan dies and is brought back to life. By god (well, the first being in the universe, responsible for life on Earth etc.) and when he comes back he's basically treated like the messiah
- and Sohmer is just making fun of it and the WW costume change.
In my opinion, the Gutters strip was in particularly poor taste and I did not find it funny. Would not have found it funny no matter which religious figure had been chosen, unless perhaps it had been the Rescue Rangers.
Sohmer is well within his rights to post whatever he likes and I'm within my rights to dislike it.
I am also free to point out that he knew that it would be offensive to a lot of people and did it anyway, just like the comics industry does.
I am free to point out that Gutters was billed as a humorous look at the comics industry... and it hasn't been very humorous. Today's strip being no real exception. Even setting aside any religious convictions, it wasn't that funny. I will freely admit that it was parody.
*shrug* it's not hilarious, but then it's a joke that's kinda overdone. And, although it would make as much sense as if it were Odin or Osiris, it wouldn't have the same cultural resonance as the resurrection myth's kinda defunct (except in Christianity).
Okay, that last one was very offensive. But BlueBard is right about Gutters not being very humorous. The last one I even chuckled at was the one with Wonder Woman trying on various costumes of existing characters. And some of them have ranged from just being funny to `I don't understand what this is supposed to be about' to being absolutely stupid.
Evil, Inc has been doing a storyarc involving a gun from an alternate universe that stole that universe's version of Captain Heroic's powers ending up in the regular EI universe. The gun has just been used on Captain Heroic..... http://www.evil-comic.com/archive/20100819.html (The Comic I linked isn't the current one; its the previous one)
In case anyone doesn't read Evil, Inc and is wondering what's going on:
Spoiler
Miss Match, who is the one with the gun, is secretly Captain Heroic's wife (he's a hero and she's a villain, so they have to keep their relationship a secret) and they have a son named Oscar. The green guy present is Elastic Man, who is the EI equivalent of Plastic Man and showed up to stop the criminals but was apparently too late; everyone else is a villain. (In the universe the gun is from, Miss Match was the hero and Captain Heroic was the villain; Miss Match had a skimpier costume and Captain Heroic (not sure what he was actually called - Captain Infamous, maybe - had a yellow and drab green costume with an I on the chest)
My bet is the gun won't work on Captain Heroic or if it does the effect will be temporary, since its from another dimension. Sort of like how Kryptonite from other universes/dimensions is useless against Superman.
I hope we don't have to close the thread down. Please remember to respect the fact that our community is diverse in culture and beliefs. This forum is not the place to express your opinions about those diverse beliefs it is instead a place where we show mutual respect and should post accordingly.
Gentlemen, I suggest we all remember what type of forum this is. Whatever your beliefs may or may not be, do not be insulting to the beliefs of others. I'm sure that we won't need to close this thread, just maintain civility. Just to be clear, I don't believe anyone has overstepped the line so far, but sometimes it can be hard for us to foresee what others may find offensive because we don't share their point of view. Let's just be respectful.

Should made the Mon Calamari a Rogue and had him stop someone from walking over a carpet or something, uttering the familiar line "ITS A TRAP!" Would have been funnier.
Thanks to this thread, I've added Weregeek to my ever-expanding list of webcomics I read- and, as of yesterday, I'm fully caught up! This has quickly become one of my favorite webcomics- though, like some of you, I find it works better, for the most part, without the extra layer of fantasy/weregeekery/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. (I did enjoy the Geekmoot, though, and some of the "weregeek" stuff has included some rather good moments... Overall, the comic works better as a webcomic about a bunch of geeks in a more-or-less realistic, if exaggerated, world, though.) Anyway, thanks for the recommendation!
In Evil, Inc (http://www.evil-comic.com/archive/20100827.html). it looks like the secret is out.
Spoiler
The gun got damaged and was about to explode. Miss Match had successfully gotten Captain Heroic away from the gun, but when he saw the gun was about to explode he heroically blocked the blast with his own body. The last panel of today's comic shows Miss Match hugging Captain Heroic, apparently in view of Elastic Man, Lightning Lady, and at least one or two others.
Yeah, but....
Spoiler
Elastic Man and Lightning Lady had been fooling around with each other behind people's backs some, so it'll be interesting to see how those two react. Would be interesting if those two out themselves to Miss Match and Captain Heroic.

Today's installment was a bit more direct, but twisted. I can see where some would think it's funny, but I just thought it was gratuitously gratuitous and on the far side of the PG-13 scale. Hence, no linky.

The guy who made the webcomic strip wrote that the joke's that one day, the entirety of Image will be molded in his image (not really sure what that would entail myself, as a large number of Image properties are creator owned and a good many don't take place in a "shared universe", but I digress). But I personally took it as a bit of gentle ribbing towards his outspoken views on the industry. Probably chief among them, that all struggling writers/artists should be making creator-owned properties in lieu of more established, proven properties (I don't want to derail the thread, http://freedomreborn.net/archive/index.php?topic=48118.0 so here's a much older one from FR archives with the details (http://freedomreborn.net/archive/index.php?topic=48118.0%20so%20here's%20a%20much%20older%20one%20from%20FR%20archives%20with%20the%20details))
Making jokes at the easy targets such as Bendis, Joe Q and Didio is sure to ensue the highest number of people will lol/get the joke, but that also runs the risk of clever jokes about such figures drying up (also, webcomics have a high tendency to be imbued with their creator's personal views *cough* VGCats)
Anyway, as for the Frankencastle strip, meh. I didn't find it funny. But I also find the Frankencastle concept incredibly dumb, particularly since it's practically a proven rule that the more supernatural/"superhero" elements there are in a Punisher comic, the more it sucks. Maybe that was part of the joke? I dunno.
Re: FrankenCastle Cereal
Spoiler
The cartoon characters are supposed to make kids want to eat the cereal... FrankenCastle wouldn't bother with whether they wanted to eat it or not, he'd just make 'em... Punisher-style.

Utterly seconded. If she doesn't turn out to have been wearing fake fangs to freak Dustin out, the whole date arc is such a waste...
The only way that could possibly be redeemed into a decent storyline is if Ravenna reveals to Dustin that it was just a joke... and then leaves enough mystery to make the reader wonder if she really is a vampire without ever going there.

Mark, being typically clueless, begins writing "love letters" from Prince Allen to Priscilla, Sarah's character. He doesn't stop to think about what might happen as a result.
Sarah, of course, begins to get carried away with her fantasies. Mark is still clueless.
Sooner or later, there will be an awkward scene between Mark and Sarah as they're acting out Allen and Priscilla. Mark is still clueless.
At some point, there will be some danger that Mark's girlfriend discovers the letters or something else. Mark may wind up in a position where he has to choose between letting his girlfriend think something is going on behind her back, or confess to being a geek and taking part in the Vampire LARP. She's not going to be terribly understanding either way.
So, to avoid getting his girlfriend angry, Mark lies to his girlfriend about what's happening and starts to distance himself from Sarah. Sarah's feelings get hurt and she probably winds up taking it out on him as Priscilla in the LARP.
Eventually, Mark begins to realize that he has feelings for Sarah. But he misinterprets Sarah's hostility and decides to keep it to himself. More character tension ensues...

Think naive, wanna-be super-heroine with spider powers and you get the idea. In many ways, it's kind of a parody. It's good for quite a few chuckles and the art is not bad at all. If you're an anime fan, you'll probably like the art even better than I do. I recommend taking a look.

Followed it for a while, then lost interest.
Latest Weregeek = http://www.weregeek.com/
So of course the big news for Weregeek is that it is now updating five times a week instead of three. A point missed if you assumed Weregeek wasn't going to update until Wednesday and didn't follow the link GM posted.
At any rate, the plot should advance faster. Though I won't count on it.
Over in Schlock Mercenary (http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2011-01-13), Dr. Bunni is about to order Schlock to give up his beloved Plasma Cannon.
I'm pretty sure she'll survive the experience. I think.
http://www.pvponline.com/ - Jan 13, Francis levelled up again.
And we have a couple of Valentine's Day themed webcomics...
A funny yet heartfelt commentary on holiday commercialism:
http://starslip.com/2011/02/14/tis-a-season/
And, most visually disgusting Valentine's Day themed webcomic goes to Looking For Group.
Spoiler

There were more, but not with themes I'm comfortable posting.
Hmm. Glad I checked this thread out, lots of stuff I wasn't aware of.
Don't think I've seen Mitz's "Plan B" mentioned anywhere in the thread yet. Though the storyline is done, it's a great read (IMO), and especially ought to appeal members of these boards, being a webcomic about supervillains and all that...
http://www.goonpatrol.com/comic/?webcomic_post=plan_b_1_01
puts one at the beginning of the story...
Today's RatFist
http://ratfist.com/page-32/
I'm still waiting to see where this one is going, but today's page has both bad puns and a great cameo.
EDIT: The comic finished with page 150. I can't say I can recommend it in the end. At some point it suddenly became a sounding board for the artist's philosophy and got way too preachy for my tastes. Ah well...
Gutters has leaked the latest Wolverine-led X-Men lineup!
http://www.the-gutters.com/comic/187-ryan-lee (http://www.the-gutters.com/comic/187-ryan-lee)
{sigh. If only...}
(I don't think this one has been mentioned yet but I could be wrong.)
At any rate...
Namesake
(starts here: http://www.namesakecomic.com/2010/09/02/prologue-cover-3/ )
I've been enjoying this one as of late. The premise is that certain names have power those who have them are "namesakes". They are extensions of their literary characters (though we're still learning what that entails). One girl named Emma has accidentally taken on a role of the namesake Dorthy and this is already starting to cause problems.
Don't let the cute artwork fool you, there are a lot of horror elements to this story. And a few unhappy endings.
I have just one comment about today's Dr. McNinja:
YES!!!!!!!
Oh, and:
It's about time!
(No pun intended.)
anyone following Namesake...
Today's strip (http://www.namesakecomic.com/2011/10/06/the-truth-about-elaine/) had a great ending. And Fred... I frickin' LOVE this character.
http://www.kimecan.com/Comic_Eng/tdk001.html
I can really picture Glitch, Tomato and other anime fans digging this. It is a really dynamic, creative and super well illustrated webcomic from a Mexican creator. He does a lot of fun stuff with the format, giving it an animated, cinematic feel. In other words it is not just static, he animates in different dialog balloons and action scenes within the same pannel.
Check it out, it is a nice mix of teen adventure, shinto animism, science of sleep and some action too.

I checked it out, got caught up, and I have to say I didn't like it.
I get that Frank L. Baum's "Wizard of Oz" was not exactly the sanitized kid-friendly fairy tale starring Judy Garland. Like "Alice in Wonderland" it has its dark side. But this whole Namesake series is just too dark, violent and gory for me to really enjoy.
Ok, I just had to resurrect the review for this one --

Can't put anything over on Lucille... Francis should know that by now...

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Jl8 as well.
Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong
http://www.nothingcanpossiblygowrong.com/comic/page-001/
This OGN is available for preorder, but you can read the whole thing online for now (this will likely change in the future). I don't usually go for HS semi-realistic stuff, but I greatly enjoyed this. Just when you think you know where it's going, page 111 happens. :)
