Yes.  The "classic" (I can't believe i'm old enough for movies of my youth be referred to with that word) is being remade.  I wonder why the name won't be changed to Kung-Fu kid given the history between China and Japan.  I am interested in the premise of the story based on my own moving from the US to China.  I recommend China Eastern of Air China if you flying here.

Looks awesome. I thought it was going to be just a more of the same remake, but it looks like a totally awesome reimagining/tribute and I had no idea Jackie Chan was in it. I want to see it.

The reason for the name change is that the "Mr. Miyagi" role is being done by Jackie Chan.  Chan is Chinese, Kung Fu is a chinese art, etc.

Actually, I am not minding the name change as much.  It is starting to feel more like a sequel than a remake.  If they reference Mr. Miyagi or Daniel in there then it will definitely feel more like a sequel.  Pat Morita (who played Mr. Miyagi) died several years ago so it'd be near impossible for him to make a cameo.  Ralph Macchio could show up as an adult Daniel Larusso and make a reference to his deceased sensei though.

It's going to be interesting to see where this leads.

Well...It's seems there was no name change.  That's what perplexes me.  A lot of Chinese really don't like Japanese in my experience.  So I wonder how this will be received here.

I don't understand this. Why would it be changed? Isn't he learning Karate in China in the movie?

maybe he is learning karate.... but why would he?
Jackie Chan is a kung fu master and karate is a Japanese martial art.
from watching the trailer a few times, it doesn't look like karate as he uses open palm forms and his stances are far more kung fu style.

Yeah, and I don't think they'd take too kindly to a movie about a foreign kid learning the martial arts of their cultural oppressors and winning a tournament with it :P

Have you seen Lust, Caution? my girlfriend made me get it a few weeks ago. It's pretty popular in Korea too.

I guess that is weird, but a name change would be bad. Though why not set the whole movie in Japan if thats the case? Just so they could use Jackie Chan?
I can barely tell kung-fu from karate and I actually took some classes.
I'd guess he's just a Chinese guy that teaches karate in China.

Wow over thinking much.  I think this will be an enjoyable feel good remake.  Argue semantics later.  Also call me intolerant, I could careless what anyone else thinks of the movie, it is clearly made for a Western Audience so mistakes will be made.

My biggest issue (aside from the whole lets remake something AGAIN hollywood mentality) is that I think the the kids are too young. Not to say that young kids cant be mean vicious little buggers, but by reducing the age and removing the whole adolescent/on the verge of adulthood part of it, I feel like the sense of danger and discomfort and awkwardness is removed. The original felt like a kid on the verge of being an adult learning how to come into his own... this new one from the trailer seems like a getting even with the school bully type of vibe.

Exactly!  I'm sure Koreans would be quite upset too if the kid were learning Karate in Korea...they might tolerate Kung-Fu, more.  Anyway, I have seen Lust Caution...it was very big here in China.  Good film!

The whole adjustment to a foreign culture thing is enough...they don't need to deal with teenage angst.  I guess that's why they made the kids younger.

Apparently, according to my dad, who lives overseas, it is being called The Kung Fu Kid in some places.  Apparently The Karate Kid is just being used to maintain a connection to the older film.
