Title: 40 worst movies of the decade
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on December 20, 2009, 04:32:55 AM
With all the top of the decade lists coming out (even though the new decade doesn't start until 2011, grumble grumble) moviephone has a worst one.  Except for The Spirit making the list, they seems to have done a good job of picking real stinkers.  At least I'm pretty sure they are, because I made it a point to avoid all of these.

I think Battlefield Earth was the only one from that list I saw. I can't believe Dungeons and Dragons didn't make the list, though.

I saw several of these.

-Speed Racer
-Envy
-The Happening
-White Chicks
-Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever
-Corky Romano
-Little Nicky
-Catwoman
-Battlefield Earth

The only ones that don't deserve to be on that list are Speed Racer and Envy. Those two movies aren't nearly as bad as all the critics claim they are, especially Speed Racer. They put that on the list because of it's art style? Doesn't seem too fair to me. Other than that, the list is pretty good, but with one glaring omission: Ultraviolet. That's the worst movie I've personally seen in theaters and the only one where it was so bad I wanted to walk out. That should have been number 2, if not 1. I honestly don't remember much about Battlefield Earth, but I don't remember hating it that much. Also, Elektra should have been right behind Catwoman.

Unless decades have 11 years, it starts in 2010 - because there was a year 'zero,' so to speak.

Actually, no, there was no year zero.  First AD year was one, previous year was 1 BC.  No zero.

And mathematically a group of ten consists of 1-10, with 11-20 being the next group.

Either way, this decade consists of the years 2001-2010 with the next being 2011-2020.  People like the consistent 10's digits though.

There was no year zero at the start of the modern reckoning, so 2000 wasn't technically the start of the new millennium (for a whole host of other reasons as well, including that the system was retroactively applied in 525, and done wrong right from the get go), but there was a year zero for the decade - 2000.  Regardless, mathematics hardly enter into it: this decade consists of years 2000-2009 because decades in the popular reckoning (the only one that counts for this entirely arbitrary system) run 0 to nine, and always have.  The twenties started in 1920, the thirties in 1930, and so on.  If you don't like that, good luck changing it.

I know I can't change it, but I don't have to like it.

Anyway, moving on.

DB:Evolution is not on the list. It should be.

It should be by now... came out shortly after Watchmen did as I recall, and HP is already out.

I also loved Speed Racer.

I'd never seen an episode, so I had a pretty poor grasp on the source material. I thought it worked really well visually. The storyline was kind of corny and stupid in places, but I got the idea it was meant to be like that.

The Happening on the other hand - hoo boy! Never mind the dumb premise, it felt like M. Night had forgotten how normal people have conversations when he wrote this one.

I loved White Chicks and Little Man....good stupid fun!  I nearly fell out of my seat at the theater during each of those.

My Indian friend hung her head low after we watched "The Happening".

Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever is the only movie on the entire list that I've actually seen, and I watched it on cable about a year ago.

That list didn't catch my eye so much as another article on the site:  Do Movie Critics Still Matter? (http://www.moviefone.ca/2009/11/23/do-movie-critics-still-matter/).  It makes some good points.  These days, Critics are a dime a dozen and the only thing out of the ordinary about them is somehow they managed to get paid to blog.

Ditto. I really didn't think it any worse than any other popcorn action flick. I think people just give it a hard time because of the expectations generated by the people cast in the leads.

Mr. Moviefone appears on a local radio talk show every week and I really appreciate how he takes a non-critic look at the movies, simply rating it on whether he thinks folks will enjoy it, meaning he often backs films critics pan.
