Title: Reading Suggestions
Post by: Tawodi Osdi on November 21, 2009, 11:55:58 PM
I would like to get caught up on a lot of the current story lines in both DC and Marvel.  I already have 4 large comic boxes and about the same number of small boxes in my dad's basement four states away.  I don't have the money or space to do any serious comic collecting.  Does anyone have any suggestions that would allow me to be more up to date while staying within my financial and spatial budgets?  I would be most interested in trade paperbacks or other forms of collected works.  Thank you!

What are you interested in?

At Marvel the big storylines of the last few years were Avengers Disassembled, House of M, Civil War, and Secret Invasion. But that doesn't count some major X-Men storylines and Spider-Man stuff.

I have never been a big X-Fan, but I like Avengers and Fantastic Four in Marvel.  I am also a big fan of Captain America, but the last I heard they killed him off.  Back in the seventies, I also liked Spider-Man, Hulk, and most of the team books like Invaders and Defenders.

Marvel is bringing Captain America back, in a mini-series that's going on right now called Captain America Reborn. Steve Rogers was replaced as Captain America by Bucky (yes, Bucky. Long story, but he wasn't really dead after all) for a while, and it'll be interesting to see what they do with him once Steve is back. The storyarc where Bucky came back (which happened before Steve was killed off) was collected in two trade paperbacks.

I don't know if its been collected in a trade paperback yet, but Marvel did a 12-issue series called Avengers/Invaders that was pretty decent. It involves time travel and a Cosmic Cube.

There would be a heck of a whole lot to catch up on and it wouldn't be easy on your wallet. I'd suggest just wiki'ing the major events to get an overview of them.

If you like Avengers you should check out Mark Millar's Ultimates. It's a re-take on the Avengers without all the continuity baggage. For Fantastic Four, check out Silver Surfer: Requiem and Sub-Mariner: The Depths. Both are excellent stand alone tales. Not exactly FF titles but still major players in the FF universe.

Thank you all for your advice and a special thanks to Daglob regarding the link you sent me.  This site is precisely what I have been looking.  Looks like it has a lot of the new stuff and a lot of the old stuff as well.

Captain America is great. Buy the big Omnibus. Or ask for it for Christmas or Hanukkah!
