Question, do I have to have ff in the programs directory in order to be able to install ffedit?

You shouldn't have to, but I believe there were issues depending on what OS you were using, and what version (disk vs. Steam)

Ok so I didi use it, but it still cannot find ff1, I do not have it in the program folder but should that matter?

It should be using the registry entries to determine the location of the game.
What OS and game version are you using (disk, steam etc...)?
