Title: Playing Mods on Steam (yes that old problem!)
Post by: mwpvfc on October 29, 2009, 05:27:20 PM
Ok, recently bought FF & FFvT3R on Steam ..loved them both, finished them both, just wanna keep playing! Have downloaded a couple of mods but can't get either to run .. have read through this forum to try to find a solution, but nothing seems to work!

For example, trying to get "Strangers" to run, installed in the same directory as the Fforce.exe, altered the "target" string to "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\freedom force\fforce.exe" -game Strangers -log, double clicked on it .. and ended up in the normal campaign .. i.e. it seems to ignore the whole strangers thing.

It is literally driving me nuts cos Im sure its something SO SO simple but I just can't work it out! :banghead:

Hmm, it works for me.
Did you change both the target and the one under it to "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\freedom force"?  (I don't know what it is in English, but (S) is the keyboard shortcut)
everymod i've tried so far for both games has worked.  sometimes it will automatically install to the right directory, but sometimes i have to manually change it.

Its not a case sensitive problem?
Try -game strangers with a lower case 's' and see if that fixes it.

Ok tried both those - thanks - but still no joy!

I don't know if this helps, but I looked at FF.log and found that although after clicking on the Strangers link, it seems to point to the correct place, but then still loads up the mission 01_begin which I believe is the first mission of the default campaign. Look:

00:00:17.98: FF: Py_GetPath(.\System;.\System\PythonLib;.\Data\Missions\Scripts;c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\freedom force\Strangers\temp;c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\freedom force\Strangers\missions\scripts;)
00:00:17.99: FF: Py_GetProgramFullPath(c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\freedom force\fforce.exe)
00:00:28.69: FF: CInterpreter::init() completed
00:00:28.69: FF: Py_GetPath(.\System;.\System\PythonLib;.\Data\Missions\Scripts;c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\freedom force\Strangers\temp;c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\freedom force\Strangers\missions\scripts;)
00:00:28.69: FF: Py_GetProgramFullPath(c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\freedom force\fforce.exe)
00:00:28.70: FF: CMission::init(01_begin, Missions\01_begin\mission.dat)
00:00:29.27: FF: CMission::loadScript(Missions\01_begin\mission.py)
00:00:29.87: FF: initializing physics

So at some point, something is going wrong and its just loading up the default campaign. (I've tried this with other modes too - similar results!)

I don't understand this Python stuff enough to work out whats happening .. don't know if anyone out there does??

Can you explain how you went about installing this particular mod, and do you know if any other mod works? What's the name of the folder where you have the "Stranger" files located? The target name must match the actual folder name (I.E., "-game cow" in the shortcut's target must correspond to an actual folder named "cow.")

Go into your My Games list on steam, left click Freedom Force, properties, change the update settings to never up date! I just figured it out. I had the exact problem, but trust me, it works.

I have absolutely no troubles getting mods to work in  :ff:

:ffvstr:, on the other hand, refuses to let me play anything except the main campain.  I've set everything exactly accurate on both the target and start in lines for the shortcuts right down to the . after vs, and nothing.

Steam automatically installed in "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\freedom force vs. the 3rd reich"
trying to run Tommyboy's LSH mod, I used that exact line with the addition " -game LSH-new -log" after it.  I got to play as Alchemiss fighting evil versions of Freedom Force.

Same thing trying to play the Crisis mod.

I can tell you that this is getting very, very frustrating as I've already been sitting here for about 6 hours trying to get these to work.

I think I may have discovered my problem anyhow, and if I'm right it makes it impossible to play any mod via Steam.
There is no file called ffvttr.exe in these directories that I can find.  The shortcut the game uses has the target of ""C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 8890"  which is not something I think I can copy into a different Mod's shortcut and have steam know what i'm talking about.
Going to give it a try anyhow.

If there's a large explosion in southern Vermont, that was my computer.

try this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\freedom force\fforce.exe" -game Strangers -log
steam installed under Program Files (x86) on my computer, and it's vista
