I've begun putting together my graphic design portfolio and I feel my combined school work doesn't fully display my capabilities. So, I decided to task myself with re-branding numerous sport franchises. So far I've decided on about five to seven teams per major sport (NBA, MLB, NFL, and NHL). Constructive criticism is very much appreciated here.

I'll post more as they come.
I definitely like the first one better. The second one resembles a demon more than a bull, which is obviously all wrong. Stylistically, the first one is also better. It feels more contemporary and professional, while the second one has a comic book feel to it, or like the Spawn HBO series.
Also, yeah, it seems like schools never really give you much to put in a portfolio. Not sure why it's so valuable, really.
I agree with you completely FF. I've shown the first one to a few people without telling them what it is and their first response was always Chicago Bulls.
I decided to take the 2nd concept a bit further just for fun's sake. I also started on the lettering. I wanted it to be similar to the original lettering but with hints of san-serif-ness(word? probably not) for modernization.

This is a very impressive project Murs. I think I like your most recent Bulls logo design best, and I'm not a basketball fan but I think it might be nicer than the real Bulls logo. Maybe you should send it their way? :D
I'll be very interested to see what you do with some NHL teams.

The NHL ones should be the biggest challenge for me because of my vague understanding of the sport. I watch the Sharks here and there but I don't have the same passion for them as I would my local baseball team. More importantly I don't know the histories and traditions of NHL teams. Oddly enough, I've got about 10 hockey franchises that I want to re-brand opposed to 4-5 franchises within the other sports. Heh.
Thanks for the comments, Pod. ^_^

I'll go ahead and list off the teams I had in mind and why I chose them. If you guys have a favorite team that I didn't list go ahead and post it and I'll give it a shot as well.
Chicago Blackhawks - Seems pretty dated and reminds me too much of the Washington Redskins.
Boston Bruins - I like the color scheme and some had some ideas with potential pop up immediately.
Vancouver Canucks - I'm just not a fan of that logo.
New Jersey Devils - Very good logo. The challenge of an improved design interests me.
Calgary Flames - I just wanted to update it, the "C" on fire is very plain.
Philadelphia Flyers - For being called the Flyers, the logo looks very stiff.
Toronto Maple Leafs - The plainest logo. I'm guessing there's a lot of history with this team and that's how it's identified. Because of that, I feel it presents the biggest challenge. *shakes in fear*
Florida Panthers - It's well made, but I think it's too much. Perhaps simplified to just the head and some minor tweaking and it's a winner.
Detroit Redwings - Is that a wheel and a wing? I understand it, but with major vehicle manufacturers "crapping" on its employees(Detroit's citizens) I don't understand why it's represented. Seems like a slap to the people's faces. The wheel has got to go.
Ottawa Senators - They have a new logo, but I think something more inline with their previous logo would work best.
Dallas Stars - I saw some possibilities with them.
See if you can come up with one from the Cleveland Browns. I'm sick of that stupid orange helmet log.
I can help with NHL teams as well, if you need it. The Bulls logo looks good, man!

No worries Pod. I actually did some research on the Canucks. So if I read right, Johnny Canuck is a fictional World War 2 fighter pilot created to boost moral and national pride during that time. Is this correct? If so, I think this will be my direction for the logo.
Alrighty, a concept for the Portland Trailblazers.

I like the last one best, it has more depth.
I didn't know anything about the fighter pilot guy. Canuck, as far as I know is a nick name for Canadians. They're logos over the years have been kinda random.
Growing up, my favourite NHL logo was the Blackhawks. There's something about the colours and the Blackhawk face that I always loved. I also love the Senators logo.
The Toronto Maple Leafs seems somewhat untouchable. Sure, it's simple and plain, but it's just so darn definitive and recognizable. It'll be hard to match.
The Flames definitely need a change. The [url+http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/archive/8/83/20070710014510!Calgary_Flames_horse_head_logo.png]alternate[/url] isn't bad though.
The Canucks have always been a mish-mash. In the 80s it was the orange/yellow/red stripes and the word Canucks as a skate. They've changed many times. It's best not to take the word Canuck too literally (like the Johnny Canuck reference).
Just leave the Oilers alone. :D It's easily one of the more distinct and clever logos out there.

That's what I was assuming. So it's the equivalent of the Yankees' "NY" logo, no harm in giving it a try though.

Oh, and if you need any baseball teams to do....Cincinnati Reds, please.
Definitely with the stem. I saw your first pics before I left school earlier today and made a mental note to suggest putting the stem in. It looked wrong, unbalanced without the stem.
Of the stem ones I think I like the 1st one best, but honestly I change my mind each time I look at them.
Not a bad redesign. I was curious what you'd do with the Leafs, it's one of the those untouchable logos.
I find myself preferring this one. I like the negative space "toronto" creates within the leaf but it's also less redundant. I would think a blue maple leaf would be iconic enough and the team name being implemented unnecessary because of that. What do you guys think? I could try some variations of the stem with that as well.

After watching a UFL game on the Versus network last night, I think you should rebrand their horrible designs.

Absolutely! Doesn't help that most of their teams have lousy names, either.
(I really hope the Locos at least play "Crazy Train" over the speakers during their games!)
The Reds are my favorite baseball team, but their logo (the C with the word Reds inside) really needs an update bigtime. They've had that same logo for decades, which is why I suggested them.
That C that reminds murs of the Bears has been used by a LOT of sports teams; the Cleveland Indians even used it, I believe, and there's a high school football team here called the Hornets that used to use it (white C on a green helmet).
wow...those are pretty....not good. tuskers are good, but the other three have me wondering if the designers were even trying.
Yep, that "C" needs to change. I'll probably make something based on one of their first 3 logos: (http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/2715/cin.jpg)

Ok this one, honestly until I checked the name I had no idea what team it was. May as well have been my new logo. Being recognizable is an important part of a logo and I don't think this fits.
Somewhere it loses the idea of hockey and the tradition of the Flyers...it reminds me more of a basketball team here.

As a sports fan looking from the outside I've always considered the Flyers logo as a cheap knock-off of the Red Wings. Which isn't a good thing for bringing in new fans. I also I didn't feel it represented a fast and violent sport because it was so stiff and rounded. I guess that's why I branched further away from the original.
But hey, I guess I can just use this as an alternate logo. I've decided to cut back to 5 teams a sport but create full sets for each team. A set being a uniform design, lettering, primary and secondary logos, with the possibility of a tertiary logo.
After reading the Flyers history I'm failing to see how they have "tradition." I feel they are the equivalent of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both are expansion teams that have fielded some good squads and great players but with only a couple championships. In the world of sports you gotta do way more than that to have tradition and legacy.
The Flyers have long since been known as a tough team. Sadly my hockey history is very poor beyond my starting to watch, but maybe Deaths Jester can give more information on that.
No doubt it can be tough to redesign logos, but all of the ones you've done so far I knew what team it was as soon as I saw it (and I don't follow basketball) but that Flyers one just didn't click - not that I'd have any idea what to do with it.
You're doing a good job Murs.

The Broadstreet Bullies is what one of their nicknames were from what I read. Bunch of real tough guys. Another reason why I made the comparison to the Bucs. Both have an era of being really tough teams with smash-mouth styles yet fundamentally sound play. Both have also had eras of being at the bottom of the food chain. Anyways, my comparison wasn't intended as a slap to the Flyers.

Ya it is tough. It being recognizable was a priority for me but I also wanted to step away from the 'wings' look because of the Detroit Red Wings similarity. I'm thinking I can just use this one as a secondary or tertiary logo for my set; something in the same vein as the foot logo the Avalanche have. But ya, I'll try something else for their primary logo
I'm enjoying your redesigns so far.
You said you were trying to move away from the Red Wings' 'wings', why not try incorporating something mechanical like fixed wings, propellers or rotors?
See, I looked at the P logo and knew it was for the Flyers instantly. I did check to make sure I was right, after the fact. I like it, actually.

Don't know anything about Soccer.
I can see what you mean about the original logo having too much going on - it looks like 3 logos in one. I like yours, it's cleaner and has a nice style. The only thing I'd adjust is the negative space - the space inside the red border at the top before the blue section and the gap between real and the soccer ball. It's looks kinda blah or half finished or something. I'd either tighten up the design or maybe some decorative lines or something.

My only one so far is: AC Miami. Crazy original, I know.
Many of these were used in the NBA, NHL or college: Thunder, Lightning, Hurricanes, Surge (as in storm surge), Alligators, Explorers, Everglades, Glades, Orange....
Maybe it could be more regional and cover Florida, like Colorado's team, if that would help make the name sound better.

Not a sports logo, but I've always disliked Google's typeface choice for their logo. The font has such a dated look that it seems more appropriate for the title of a Shakespeare play. I've just started a design course a few months back. It is amazing to understand the implications of font.
Personally, I quite like Google's logo, but only because I see it every single day several times and it has set itself up as the logo.. If I were fresh to google, I would totally be with you here.
Looks very cool, all the same.
I like your font... It's simpler, more fun. The font they use is too... sophisticated I think.
Alrighty folks, I've finally created a logo for myself. I've held off so long because I wanted something catchy and unique for name, but I also wanted something that would last. Couldn't think of anything so I just settled with my real name...I'll always like that.
I'm not sure if i'll stick with the orange. A turquoise or green are possibilities.
