Title: DragonCon-WHOOO!!!
Post by: Glitch Girl on September 03, 2009, 12:35:28 PM
I'm about to head off to the convention for a few days.  From what I'm hearing, ticket sales are MASSIVE.  I had expected a downturn but I may be wrong.  Something tells me it may be a good thing that I had to ditch a few heavier costumes due to car trunkspace limitations - may need the extra mobility.

Wish me luck and see y'all in a few days!

:( Lucky! I wanted to again go so bad but it's way expensive. I may order tickets early for next year though.

Maybe you can say hi to my sisters and brother. I would normally say they're the creepy ones dressed weird, but yknow, its Dragon*Con. Also they're complete strangers so that'd be weird and pointless.

Awesome.

I will detail more later (after I start sorting through the 450 or so photos I took this year) but I will say this...
Much MUCH more to come after I unpack. :)

Yes, GG, the musical tesla coil did rock.  so did the girl who opened for them. (the band with the coil that is)

Christina Rose from Heroes is very cool and has a great sense of humor.

Still sorting/resizing/organizing pics and have to take a break to do laundry.

In the meantime, enjoy a slideshow of the parade. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42279816@N02/sets/72157622310339982/show/)

I'm amazed at the time, creativity and skill that go into some of those costumes and props.

I find the General Lee, Catherine Bach and John Schneider to be an odd choice for a sci/fi fantasy convention.  (Although Pa Kent could certainly fit the theme.)

well to be fair about The General Lee, Miss Bach, and Mr. Schneider.  Dukes of Hazard was initially shot in Georgia.  Catherine and John have also both done some sci-fi work as well.

In addition, Dragon*Con is moving beyond being just sci-fi and fantasy though that will always be its core.  Actors who are better known for their non sci-fi work have been guests in the past.  Examples being Mickey Rooney and members of the cast of Happy Days.

Pictures are taking a while to organize and it's been a bit crazy getting back into the swing of things so no report yet.

However, more pictures!

DC Costumers Photoshoot (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42279816@N02/sets/72157622190540165/)
One of my friends is part of a group that likes to make Superhero costumes.  They decided to get together and have a photoshoot in front of the SouthTrust building (which looks appropriately Metropolis-y)  It was very well organized: they had all the same heroes gather together, put together some posed group shots and would rotate out repeated characters so everyone got to THE [insert popular hero] in the picture.  I spent over an hour with this group and had a great time.

Abney Park concert (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42279816@N02/sets/72157622186247549/)
Abney Park is a steam punk rock band.  I caught them last year out of curiosity and have been a fan ever since.  I lucked out and managed to get right next to the stage for their 1:30 am (eek!) show.

Still uploading and tagging costume shots.

Sadly no.  Never got the mask to work right.  I did talk to her about how she did hers and she gave me some hints.  It looked really great too.

My brother was telling me about how good her costume was. Thanks for uploading the pictures so I could see.

How did she manage to see where she was going? :o Must have been pretty hard to see and breathe with that mask on. :)

Actually it wasn't as bad as you might think.  The mask was cheesecloth attached to a wire that wrapped around the edge of her face.  Pretty loose weave despite the layers and pretty lightweight material.

Okay I know I haven't done my con report yet, ended up in a big project here, but plan to do it soon.  HOWEVER, there is a bit of news that has recently been updated.

Dragon*Con decided to try for the record of people doing the Thriller Dance.  I admit I did not participate, but I was curious how it would go.  I heard there were over 900 participants.

Well... it looks like it not be a record after all.  So far, the Mexican group that got Youtubed holds the record, but there's some discrepencies...

Here's the blog with the latest news on the whole thing (http://www.dragonconthriller.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=259).  I'm really hoping they change their mind, or if this is a case of geek discrimination again (more on that later).

Oh and here's thr official video of the attempt. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJ8IjFPWn1Y)
