Title: Ewzzy's Efforts - ?Blue Demon!
Post by: Ewzzy on July 27, 2009, 11:46:30 PM
Hi, you might remember me from the old days of FF. I was an early member of NPI, but I disappeared in order to go to college. I've since graduated and while looking for work I've started skinning again. Instead of talking your ears off I'll just post my start here.
Download Dr McNinja (http://blog.ewzzy.com/2009/07/new-freedom-force-part-0-dr-mcninja.html)
Dr McNinja is my favorite webcomic. I'll be doing more skins from his universe soon.

Download Solitaire (http://blog.ewzzy.com/2009/07/new-freedom-force-part-1-solitaire.html)
Solitaire is from the Ultraverse. More about him at the download link.

I've been doing a retrospective of my time as a FF Skinner on my blog (http://blog.ewzzy.com) as well as posting new skins there. If you want to see just my FF related content you can go here (http://blog.ewzzy.com/search/label/freedom%20force). I'll also be posting my WIP on FFCenter and releases here on FR. Feedback is much appreciated.

ohgodohgodohgod.....

How could I not have thought to request this?

Dr. McNinja!!!

Now do Dan McNinja. Ill request a Ninja mesh with a special "somehow eat a bagel without removing your mask" animation.

We need a LOT more Ultraverse skins around these parts.

Very nice Dr. McNinja! Great job!

Hey, I have a "Raptor Bandit" model I've been kinda working on... if you would like it, it's yours.

@The Hitman: Oh heck yes. That'd be the coolest.

@Laughing Paradox: Then you are in luck. I've got several more Ultraverse skins that will be released over the next week.

@Daglob: I actually had a skin of Solitaire from my old run as a skinner. But all my work from those days has long since been deleted.

@Scorpion: You too are in luck my friend. Check out my thread at FFCenter and you'll see my WIP Dan McNinja skin. In game, using an active defense called "Can't Catch Me If I'm On Fire" is one of the most joyous things in the world.

@Kommando: Thanks for the kind words old chum!

It was daunting skinning Prime because the default skin for the mesh was Prime as done by C6. He's a tough act to follow.

Oh God, the fire thing....

Imma make a Judy herofile out of the gorilla mesh. One of the attacks will be "Fill out these forms". Itll be rad burn with very low damage and very, very high stun.

And of course a crazy rage state called "WHO ATE MY HOT DOGS!!?!??"

I probably should have put together a better mesh for him, but I skinned him before I tried skoping together meshes from other parts.

@Vertex: It seems everybody is looking forward to Champions. I'll have to update my skin when it's up.

@Scorpion: I tried DSP out in game and gave him some technomage based powers in addition to punching and kicking. I forgot about the poison eyes for Dan. What powers do these guys all need?

You gotta do a Martin skin.

Attacks:

We Pass the Savings on to YOU!: Big Punch attack

Two For One!: Combo Attack.

CRAZY LOW PRICES!: Rage State.

And of course, Dan McNinja's KNIFE EYE ATTACK!!

Any chance of a ghost wizard? Or Robot Dracula? Or....well, really, I could go on and on...

YAY I AM SO HAPPY NOW.

Other characters:

Yoshi: Irrational's raptor with a saddle on it.
Franz Rayner: Male_muscular with a ponytail skoped on.
Chuck Goodrich: Male_suit and male_astronaut (or whatever it's called...)
Beeman: Male_alpha or male_cape
Hortense: One of the vx_females with a short hair piece.

You know, I have to tell you, Gordito and the McNinjas are awesome. But you need to know that its not just because youre the firstone to make these awesome characters. The skins themselves, the detail and work you put into them are by themselves amazing. Like Gordito. Thats a really nice skin by itself.

Thanks for your stuff, Ewzzy. You really are great.

And, oh jesus, Bearclaw.

Oh, if only Valandar was still around. You could count on him to make a kickass Paul Bunyan Syndrome victim.

I love "Half-Transformed Awkward As Hell" Martin.

You gonna skope a disconcertingly large wang on the fully transformed Martin? Extreme powered Panic Area attack.

Hortense is cool, but Im not a hug fan of her character. Not.....distinctive enough, I guess. Thats not to say that the skin looks spot on.

The thing I like the most about Doctor McNinja heroes in Freedom Force is that you could put them up against anything, litterally anything, and it would fit the thematic of the series.

Your love of the comic is truly admirable. Now, if only a brave skinner would man up and do a good Ray Smuckles....
Title: Re: Ewzzy's Skins

@Vamp: Gracias!
@Scorp: Martin is one of my favorite skin's I've made. I'm glad you like him. Sorry, just shadows for the monster. I do release all my skins/skopes under the creative commons so you are welcome to alter him however you wish after he's released. Hortense was designed by [urlhttp://carlymonardo.blogspot.com/]Carly Monardo[/url] and like all her stuff it's more focused on the face and hair details than the costume. Of course she also designed King Radical. I personally love having the Dr Characters fight giant dinosaurs, robots, and frost giants all at once. It's chaos. I've never had my love of a comic admired before... it's humbling.  ;) I just love doing untapped characters and the McNinja's are there.

Really great stuff. I particularly like the Bee-Man and the ninja with chainsaws. So funny.

@GGiant: You caught me! Gni and I used to share a lot and I still use his bases for my clothes. They're usually a lot more modified than that. I'm not done with Paul yet so their still some work to do on them.
@Scorp: Grr...pine! PIINNE!
@Outcast: I really have no idea how to take my time. I'm used to doing graphics for live sports where there is no such thing.
@Paradox: I'm just happy I made the chainsaws "Hastings" brand after Chris Hastings, creator of Dr McNinja.

This oughta hold everyone over for the weekend. Releases resume on Monday.

Perhaps an alternate version of Death in swimming trunks? Hmmm?

Oh, and Mitzi is getting a direct attack with very high knockback called "Precisely Aimed Demolitions".

Really Beautiful skins here Ewzzy, and fantastic skopes aswel. Both combined bring these characters (that I had never heard of) to life for me - theres just so much personality in each one. really great work!

@GGiant: Thanks.
@Scorp: I tried to whip up some trunks but finding pants to put on over a skeleton mesh got way too complicated.

Decent.

Can Ben Franklin 2 be far behind? I hope not, but what he's gonna do in Freedom Force I have no idea.

Perhaps some attribute that has him come back to life over and over? Like that Russian Doll thing. Hmm....

Or maybe a Direct Attack called "Bestow Dukehood" which has a high stun cuz gettin cussed out by Ben Franklin dont happen every day.

His powers are flight, super strength and being an a-hole.

And how in the name of God am I gonna recreate Franz's butt-weakness into the game?

@Scorp: I'm not even close to being done, but here's a preview.
@Benton: I think the flawed invulnerability trait gets is better. Though oddly it makes the best tactic against him to be just to keep using quick fast and cheap attacks until you hit the weak spot. After he loses half his health then you hit his as hard as you can.
@AfghanAnt: Thanks, that means a lot coming from someone as talented as you.

Now onto something fun. I spent all of yesterday looking for meshes to continue my work, including a man-shark mesh from Webrider. Out of curiosity I downloaded his Bob mesh from Reboot. As the standard skin I found my old bob skin slightly modified by Cardmaster.
This was not only one of the first skins I ever made, but also one of the first things I ever did in Photoshop. I made this way back in 2002.

I wish I could take all the credit for this guy. I'm using Googleplex's bases with a fair amount of tweaking.
I used the liquify tool in photoshop to shift around the musculature and then used the surface blur tool to blend googleplex's harsh lines.
I followed that up with some gradient map action to give use skin tone and then a green photofilter to give it that olive look.
I redid the face completely and blended the neck so it would look more attached to the body.

I'll ask what I asked in the requests forum in here too. I'm looking for a male_basic mesh with pants that isn't Gni's (his won't copy over in a skope) or based on Tj's PV (that shoulder doesn't look right at all without at least a shirt) and isn't a separate skinned piece?

I spent sometime away from Dr McNinja characters on a character from the good Dr's inker's comic Nedroid (http://www.nedroid.com/).
Harrison is always sad because he doesn't go on adventures. I made sure he'll have plenty of adventures.
(note that this is a preview and I haven't even looked at the shark head texture yet)

Ah, but were is the tasteless, ostentatious gold chain?

And can a Beartato mesh/skin be far away? My guess is....yeah, no, itll probably never get made. Dont know how Id use him in the game anyway.

Shrug.

@Outcast: Thanks! It's shocking how big a change seven years can make.

@Scorp: I have a plan to make Beartato, but we'll see how that goes. Oh, and the chain is right here on the finished skin.

I spent the weekend tinkering on my avatar skin. You see, I can't claim to be Mongo the chainsaw ninja for long. Instead I shall be Ewzzy once more.

NEW PREVIEW!
I skoped one of Renegade's Luke Cage meshes into the Tombstone mesh from Irrational. I swapped the guns out for the hand cannons from the Pulp_Versatile mesh by Texas Jack. I hid the lightning and spent an hour trying to get rid of the LOD transformation. That's the thing that makes mesh go low poly when you zoom out. It would make Ewzzy transform into a low poly version of Tombstone if the camera got too far away. I finally fixed that and then I found that the guns had a reflection no matter what I did. My only fix was to black out the lightmap so nothing on the mesh can reflect now. After all of that I feel as thought I can preview him here.
He's based on my first decent avatar.

Thanks everybody. I figure I'll get burned out as soon as I find a job. Ha! My skins are getting a lot more complicated and detailed and that might cause me to burn out first. We'll see when I crash. Following this thread will be like going to a Nascar event.

Speaking of being more complicated and detailed:

@Cascarudo: I have a tendency to make characters in pant and not tights. I've developed a shirt and pants base now that works for most clothes with some tweaking.
@Artemis: It's all about choosing a good base. He's based on the Strangefate base (http://www.strangefate.com/Freebies/index.htm) with a lot of tweaking to fit him in with the rest of my characters.
@Paradox: Keep skinning? Only because you said so!

NEW WEBSITE! (http://www.freedomforce.ewzzy.com)
Oh yes it's true. www.freedomforce.ewzzy.com (http://www.freedomforce.ewzzy.com) is now the place where you can get all of my skins and look at some retrospectives of my old days doing skins for FF. It's worth a quick look over. The visual style isn't even close to final. Heck, my banner is just a picture of LA from the Getty Center.

NEW YAHOO GROUP!

I realize that the reason that none of my old skins have survived is because I failed to make any sort of backups. As a result I've posted all of my skins and skopes to my new yahoo group. http://gamesource.groups.yahoo.com/group/ewzzy/ (http://gamesource.groups.yahoo.com/group/ewzzy/) I'm already at 41% capacity so we'll see how long till I have to make another group.

Dude, love the website. Actually the first Ive seen with little advertisements, essentially, under the skins. Its that little something extra. I like it!

I dont remember you from olden times, from before you got back into the game. What sort of skins did you do?
Title: Re: Ewzzy's Dr McNinja Skinning Marathon Continues!
Post by: Ewzzy on August 23, 2009, 10:05:18 AM
Thanks! If you click on the retrospectives on the site you can see the surviving screen shots of my skins. I started skinning when the game was first released without any clue what I was doing. What was the old site that hosted everyone's skins? Guy Gardner: Warrior was my first skin and it was awful! I didn't even use the character tool. I drew right on the base skin with no layers, saved, and went right to playing in game. I spent awhile as a part of "The Marvel Hunters" a group started by "Kraven" with the goal of skinning every obscure Marvel character. My heart wasn't exactly in that, but it was good for experience to have a multitude of characters to skin. I even did a skin of Crusher Hogan, the wrestler Spider-Man beats up in his first appearance. Then I got into creating originals with NPI I created a bunch that are lost to the ages but my favorites were a team of teenage international super-powered refugees called The Revenants. I did a bunch of Ultraverse and Green Lantern skins too because I was a big fan of them. Ron Marz's run on GL was what got me reading comics regularly for the first time. I was getting to about where I am now skill wise before I quit skinning to go to college.

Wow I get long winded when I post at 3 in the morning.

So I took a break today from doing Dr McNinja stuff so I could try out some nifskope stuff. To create my avatar I did a full body transplant. It's difficult making those work, but the results can be fun. I spent used Irrational's male_trenchcoat as a base to build a new versatile mesh. I stole a bunch of hats from Pulp_Versatile along with some guns from it and the freeze gun from the Ice Soldier. The bodies of Nuclear Winter and Sukhov didn't want to transfer but I made it work. Male_Heavy doesn't work well, but with some nifscope trickery he's in there.

MALE_TRENCHCOAT_VERSATILE
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_5lIbUH5s9lc/SpG9uiGZopI/AAAAAAAAJzg/i42w4Zj2YRg/s800/Fullscreen-capture-8232009-25003-PM.jpg)

I know with the advent of nifskope that versatile meshes haven't been as necessary, but I figured it was worth a shot. Any other pieces you'd like me to skope on?

@area: I can't believe I forgot to post my chainsaw fx. I made some, but never got around to releasing them. They look basically the same as yours but the chainsaw isn't transparent.

@Benton: Maybe it's time you gave him another shot!

@Outkast: I've been digging deeper into skoping. Adding pieces is fun and easy, but swapping skeletons can be maddening.

@Artemis: Thanks for the support, I was inspired while working on the shadow side project with you.

Real life has been kicking my butt, so my output has been on a swift decline. Nonetheless I'd like to preview my new Thriller 4 pack.

I cannot for the life of me make non-zombie MJ look right. I've tried 5 different photoskin faces and none work right. For anyone who doesn't read Dr McNinja that is Ben Frankslin II next to MJ.

I cannot for the life of me make non-zombie MJ look right. I've tried 5 different photoskin faces and none work right. For anyone who doesn't read Dr McNinja that is Ben Frankslin II next to MJ.

I love you. Im not kidding. I want to have your children.

Yeah- The transparency is a video card issue. If I run the game in high res is solid but if you've already got an FX pack you should release it. There aren't many people who do FX anymore.

Usually I stratify my releases over the course of a week on the blog, but I decided to dump all of these on my Freedom Force sub-site.

As far as animations for MJ/BF2 I was working on a mod of male_hunter 'cause it's animations are great for this. I never finished it though.

I was refering to Shadow's 'filled out' chest. I suppose the reference would be lost on anyone not from the UK.Katie Price is a famous/infamous 'former' 'glamour model', who is known for her HUGE assets...and is currently seeing herself fall out of public favour due to her divorce from heinous 'popsinger', Peter Andre.**

Ok, enough UK celeb-gossip trivia.

Shadow Looks great re-skinned. Maybe you could do more FF characters? You're nifskoping and skinning skills would definately add alot of character.

Looking forward to all the new skopes - i forgot how cool Red Son's keyframes are

** I realise i used alot of inverted commas ' ' - it's because I'm certain that the descriptions i gave you will be void when Miss Price needs some more money.

@Artemis: I managed to a)forget that Amber Autumn is Shadow b) forget she was a model and c) have only a passing knowledge of Katie Price. Now I know that Katie Price is known for a) implants b) name changes and c) super-villainy. Safe in this knowledge I can say: ' :lol:'
@Scorp: The Necron is ENTIRELY the work of Lord Ehmsidy. I just mapped the keyframes so he could better use his gun. I'm afraid I'm not a big Warhammer fan, just a fan of Lord Ehmsidy's meshes.

I spent a big chunk of my day learning how to use gmax and blender to alter meshes. I never quite got gmax to work but I figured out how to import nifs into blender, alter them, and export them again. It's actually pretty easy once you've done it a few times.
In order to make my new shadow more like the original and less like Katie Price I shrunk down her chest to more natural proportions and smoothed over her face to make the mask. This has a great side effect of making a perfect Question mesh.

the question is, did you read 52?  she's really good in that.
does your mesh work for  :ffvstr: ?  that is the question.
why do skopers hate  :ff: ? and that is the question.  there must be a way to convert from  :ffvstr: to  :ff: , when the mesher doesn't mind.  that is the question.
and a threadjack a little, is there a vic sage skin or mesh?  that is a question.
what is the question?

Title: Re: Ewzzy's Efforts - Answer The Question
Post by: Ewzzy on September 07, 2009, 05:05:08 PM
@Artemis, @Delorean, @Jakew, @Murs, @Paradox: Thanks!
@Bearded: So far 52 is the only thing I've read with Renee as Question. I hated the idea of it but by the end I really liked her.

The mesh works quite well in  :ffvstr: but not in :ff:. Skopers hate  :ff: because you can't mix parts from differently exported meshes. The easiest way to fix that is to use EZNifConvert and make everything  :ffvstr: compatible.

I've tried to use blender and gmax to create  :ff: compatible versions of my meshes. I've got it appear but not to animate. Does anyone have more experience with these that I should talk to?

As for Vic Sage, there is an excellent Question mesh by Gni available here (http://membres.lycos.fr/gniz713/PageWeb.htm). Now I've answered the question.

Yeah. You heard me. Swanky.
Title: Re: Ewzzy's Efforts - Answer The Question

@Scorpion13mk2: Swanky is all I want to be.
@docdelorean88: Were it not for Gni, O'Connor would be the natural choice for Vic Sage.
@daglob: Glad I could alleviate your burden.

Now, as a result of my efforts in Blender and Nifscope on the Question Montoya mesh I built these two versatile creations.

An alteration of the Crymsin mesh to have a bunch of different body variations including: female_big_chest_heels, female_pants_shirt, female_pants, female_small_chest, female_small_chest_heels, female_no_mouth, female_no_face_pants
(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_5lIbUH5s9lc/SqXA4gibNAI/AAAAAAAAKBc/g8OQ-lN5IQE/s800/Screen%20Captures2.jpg)
Not that you can really see which one is which based on my preview. The list above isn't even in the right order.

I also spent a while on this: I give you... Gni Versatile!
I took all the parts on Gni's male_basic meshes and combined them into a single mesh. There's so much variation within the mesh that I had to post that collage just to show the possibilities. I also removed a bunch of bogus parts, translated some french piece names, and dug up some hidden parts like Gni's mask and sword. This should make life easier for skopers to make Gni based variants AND it's compatible with  :ff:.

[edit: I didn't that collage really showed the mesh off.]
(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_5lIbUH5s9lc/SqXf7NbtZ3I/AAAAAAAAKB4/Osb4iwS_WOM/s400/Fullscreen%20capture%20972009%2093113%20PM.jpg)(http://lh4.ggpht.com/_5lIbUH5s9lc/SqXf8ZS1JRI/AAAAAAAAKB8/J06IVMsOhA8/s400/Fullscreen%20capture%20972009%2093235%20PM.jpg)
In order to keep keyframe compatibility I split the mesh into regular and jedi editions. The key difference being lightsabers. Everything else is the same.

I've been using a slightly different coloring technique on these to create a slightly more cartoony look. I guess that's just how I see the Invincible characters. They're very archetypal with very vibrant hues. Emotionally and storytelling wise, there is plenty of gray, but not in the characters.

Time to meet Allen.

@Podmark: I've been using Blender to tweak here and there. I went a bit overboard creating the head for Allen. The proportions and accessories are all done in Nifskope. Its still almost completely a skope. (I'd never consider myself a mesher.)
@Artemis: That's just a trick of perspective. They're all male_basic height.

Honestly, the toughest part is getting it installed properly. You have to install six different things to get it to the point where it will read and write nif files. After that it's pretty easy. Mind you all I know how to do is move vertices and smooth/grab/inflate/pinch with the sculpt tool. I have no idea how to actually model an object from scratch, but I'll create a download package and tutorial sometime if you're interested.

As Invincible is my favourite superhero comic at the moment, these amazing skins make me very happy  :thumbup: If you keep releasing characters like those, I'm going to playing this game for awhile longer!

Just a query though ... how tall is the Allen skope? He's pretty big in the comics ... bigger than a tall human, anyway.

@Blkcasanova247: Hey if that's what you're into.
@Jakew: Invincible is actually the only comic I'm reading regularly anymore. I've never been one for buying monthly books and since Ron Marz left GL Invincible has been it. I realized that my Allen isn't tall enough after I took that screenshot. He's going to be fixed before final release.

I've posted the much requested tutorial on using Blender to modify meshes. Check it out here (http://freedomforce.ewzzy.com/blender.php). I don't want to jack my own skin thread so I created a thread (http://freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php?topic=51508) for discussing the ramifications of this in the hex forum.

In the tutorial I walk you though creating this weirdo.

After watching the Cowboys vs Giants game (go Giants!) I started working on a new skin. Before I knew it, I was done. Take a look.

The Immortal!

The toughest part was figuring out the back of this costume. He is drawn wildly inconsistently. I think I've got stealing Cory Walker's colors down.

Good colors, and his face is perfect. I think he could use a little shading between the colors, however. Right now he looks a little flat.

@Jakew: I've been a big fan of The Immortal ever since
Spoiler
they hinted he was Lincoln
. I love his costume because it's one that I would never think of despite it being relatively simple.
@Gremlin: I couldn't sleep so I opened Photoshop back up and adjusted some contrast levels. How do you like this:
I'm still partial to the flatter style, but I can see why you might want the darker hues.

I have no clue who any of these characters are but I do like distinct flatness in the color - it mimics the source art well. Dupli-Kate's face is very nice. Is she and Multi-Paul related? If so, why not try to make them look more like each other (I know the nose on the mesh you chose could be problematic).

Great work again, I'm dying to use your blender tutorial I just need some free time .

The Immortal is my favourite of the three, and I like both versions - the flatter colours do seem a bit odd at first but as AA said it channels the source material and that's a very good thing.

@Cascarudo: Thank you armored catfish.
@AfghanAnt: Yeah, there supposed to be twins. I'm god awful at skinning faces and can't seem to make them look alike.
@Artemis: There you are! You haven't been around much lately. The tutorial can be completed in a half an hour if you don't get too experimental.

In terms of character design, I'd say Brit and Titan (the Invincible bad guy with the stone skin) would probably be the simplest designs in the Invincible universe.

I've really wanted to skin the Noble Causes characters for awhile ... I may try when I have time. You're inspiring me with this Invincible stuff.
Title: Re: Ewzzy's Efforts - Dupli-Kate, Multi-Paul, and The Immortal!
Post by: Ewzzy on September 22, 2009, 02:50:29 AM
@AfghanAnt: I'll try it!
@Podmark: Thanks. I swear the only reason my skins seem like they're any good is because I try and skin characters nobody has done.
@Jakew: They're simple designs, but because of that it's difficult to make them recognizable. It's easy to make a stone guy in pants but to make it be Titan is another matter. Their looks just aren't iconic like Invincible and The Immortal.

I almost made myself a liar, but sure enough here's a new release today. Download Rex-Splode from my blog (http://blog.ewzzy.com/2009/09/freedom-force-rex-splode.html).

Hmm...I like the color of the flatter hued skin, but the texture of the darker hued one is a lot more interesting, methinks. Although AA's right--it DOES look like it came straight out of the comic that way.

@Podmark: It works pretty well doesn't it?
@Gremlin: It's kind of like how C6 went though a black period where every skin's darkest parts were pure black. I'm avoiding using black or white altogether.

It's not midnight here on the West Coast (yet) so I'm still posting this in time for my release-a-day schedule to stay intact. I fixed the height since you saw him last, but otherwise not much has changed for Allen the Alien.

Damn you!!! I've had to buy 7 volumes of Invincible because your work is so good (and my individual issues are in storage), keep it up!

Any viilains on the way by the way? The Lizard League, Furnace, Bi-Plain, Battle Beast, Mauler Twins, Octo-Boss, Conquest etc.

Also, even though the design is a little.... "awkward", what do you think about Kid Omni-Man and Monster-Girl?

Title: Re: Ewzzy's Efforts - Dupli-Kate, Multi-Paul, and The Immortal!
Post by: Ewzzy on September 24, 2009, 08:02:20 PM
@Jakew: I guess I'll just have to keep stinging you along with more Invincible.
@Ghazkul: Owning issues, trades, and ultimately hard covers I know your pain. I'm working on a secret non-Invincible project right now, but Monster Girl is next on my list. After that i'll be working through Invincible like I worked through Dr McNinja, with no discernible pattern.

I changed these two a lot since you saw them last. I tried AA's face matching. Ultimately settling with changing her skin tone to match his and using and altered version of her eyes on his face. I also changed Multi-Paul's mesh to male_basic to give him a more adult look like his sister.

Much nicer than the originals. From Rex Splode on I think you've been doing quite well with this flatter cartoony look. Robot and Rex Splode are highlights for me. Allen's leg muscles seem a bit much. Same with some of Multi-Paul and Dupli-Kate's. Maybe you ought to just go ahead and make your own base.

Come on, you can do it!

But, yeah, I'm loving where you're going here.

@UnkoMan: My attempts at making my own base in the past revealed a few things. I can't draw and have only a tenuous grasp on human anatomy. I'm not all there on Allen's legs either though. Of course, anybody is welcome to re-interpret and re-skin these. I release all my stuff under the creative commons for that very purpose.

@jtharris86: Keep 'em' coming, I shall!

@murs47: I rarely make plans. If I do they fall apart. Conquest is in one of many possible futures, but for now I'm doing characters from the first part of the series and catching up.
@Scorp: That does make it pretty clear...
@Ultimate_Evil: That makes me sound like a serial killer. (at least to my ear)
@Enigma: Those are bad puns.
@murs again: Those are my favorites as of now.
@AA & Benton: I like the idea of a club or speakeasy.
@Outcast: Alliteration and Puns, you're appealing to to of my favorite literary devices.
@Hitman: More puns? It ain't easy being Ewzzy.

I'm still not sure what I'm going to pick but those are some great suggestions. Oh, and I wanted to tell you that I updated my Dupli-Kate download to make her of comparable height to her twin brother. I can't believe I didn't playtest before release.

Wow! The ideas keep rolling in. At least I know you all have a relative grasp on pronouncing my name. (and can then make puns based on that)

I've been working with Benton on bringing a character of his to life for use in the Patriot City Tales/Liberty Bay universe. I give you now a time tossed hero from ancient days: Odysseus
(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_5lIbUH5s9lc/SsE5VJxN6JI/AAAAAAAAKd8/tCYdtWpSCc4/s800/Screen%20Captures.jpg)
Benton has had this write up (http://libertybay.freedomforceforever.com/Odysseus.htm) on the character available for a while, but no visual rendition for quite some time. I'm proud to help him bring his creation into a playable state.

...but there's a problem. You see, after extensive skoping and skinning I was ready to create my reflections. (usually the last step in my process) It didn't turn out right. I've exaggerated the problem here with a green lightmap.
The mapping is incorrect on some of the pieces but only on their reflections. I did alter the uvmap on almost all the pieces to fit into 2 extras textures. Does anyone know how to fix this? The problem is only on the shoulders and the belt. Both of those had reflection before I skoped them on.

Ewzzy, as I've said via PM, he is absolutely perfect!  I had only a vague idea of what he should look like, but you've taken my concept and given him really fantastic and distinctive life.  Thank you so much for taking him on!  Now he can appear in the future versions of Liberty Bay, and in the next Episode of PCT!

When you move the UV map, you also have to move it for the Refl (aka Gloss) and Glow layers. When you have the UV editor window open, right-click on it and you'll see a command called "Select Texture Slot". From there, you can switch the view to the Gloss and Glow layers, and move them so that they match up with the main skin.

@Herodad: I'm glad that you're glad. I wanted it to scream Odysseus, but Greek's Greek ya know?
@Benton: I don't do requests often, but I'm glad I could work on this with you.
@Podmark: Cool.
@Harris: I don't like designing my very often because of my indulging bad habits of over design. I tried to keep this one as simple as possible and avoid that.
@Delorean: The Odyssey was probably my favorite bit of assigned reading in school.
@SteamTek: Thanks!
@Scorp: Very very far behind. As I said, this is a rare request job. I love myths as much as the next guy, but I've got a long list of characters ahead of them. (very long)
@JKCarrier: That worked perfectly!  :thumbup:
@Gremlin: That, you will.
@Cat: You're welcome.

Thanks to JKCarrier's perfect tip I was able to finish the skin's reflection and ship it out.

Must say, Ewz, this is the first time in a long time I've checked up on this.  You have kept yourself busy.

Though I'm incredibly impressed with your Incredible skins (for some reason Robot jumps out as the best done after his color tweaks), I must say the Odysseus skin is, in my opinion, your best work yet.  I know you're great at interpreting from the comic format (the more cartoony look of the Invincible series is stunning) this makes me hopeful that you're even better at designing original characters.  Do that more, because my god Odysseus looks fantastic.

Keep it up, dude.

Oh man, I'm really sorry to hear that Ewzzy!  I've been in that position, and I actually spent a year working odd jobs because I COULDN'T move cross country to find a job in my field.  I spent many a lonely night working in Blockbuster, wondering how Mrs. Grey's bright young son had come to this.  That's what happens when you're married to a lovely lady who is partway through a doctoral program, it rather cuts down on your options for employment to whatever is in the immediate vicinity.

Good luck man.  I know things are tough right now, but you are a talented guy.  I have no doubt that you'll be able to find something, even if it does mean a little enforced sight-seeing.

Thanks everyone. The main reason I took up skinning this summer was because I could only spend so much time job searching. I still haven't found work but LA has proven to be a bad place for me emotionally so I'm moving in with some friends in Dallas. I appreciate everyone's kind words. Freedom Reborn means a lot to me because of people like you. Don't worry Murs, I'm not leaving FF entirely. I'm working on another project which you can see here (http://freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php?topic=51685.0). It isn't my usual fare but you might think it's cool anyway.

Every time I think I'm back FF keeps pulling me back in. If you haven't been reading El Gorgo (http://elgorgo.com/) then you should know not only is he a gorilla, "He's a Rock Star, a Professional Wrestler, a Historical novelist, and a Freakin' Superhero" (and the world's greatest surf guitarist). He looks barefoot, so maybe a mesh with toes would look stronger. I think Johnny Patches has a Beast_with_toes skope on the Champions site. Also I wouldn't mind seeing how this would look with the belt and bracers skoped on. Otherwise, I'm really liking this skin. I think the face is great (understatement).

You know, only a 5 year-old kid can be that random.

It makes Dr. friggin McNinja seem sober and starkly realistic in comparison. The artwork is fantastic on it. Im enjoying.

I really like your color palette and cellshaded-like skinning technique. The combination of the skinning and meshing together on El Gorgo looks especially fantastic.

Another thing, your inspiration for skinning is so unusual that it makes the work even more interesting to look at. It's not another  Spidey or Thor, it's small publishers, indie, and web comics. It's neat being introduced to all these characters I'm not familiar with.

I can not wait to see Axe Cop completed - I read one strip and I had to bookmarked that site.

Yeah, I just got done reading. Avacado Soldier? Uni-Baby? Vampire Baby Man kid? Sockarang? Bad Santa? Come on now!

I just noticed right now something on Gorgo's hands; you Kirby-ed them. NICE. I dont think Ive ever seen somebody do the Kirby style side of fingers/fist shading thing.

There is still a bit to be done, but this should is basically what he looks like.

@Scorp: I didn't actually do a lot to get that effect. I used "Surface Blur" in Photoshop which, in addition to cleaning up noise, flatten out gradients. The rest is just the high contrast of the fur and the big hands on the mesh.

@Spyder: Axe Cop is amazing isn't it? I've heard some people out there try and claim the kid is psychotic but he's just a kid thinking like kids think. The fact that his brother is actually a great artist makes things like Sockarang seem totally natural.

@Afghan: That means a lot coming from such an amazing artist as yourself. I know good and well that I can't compete making any big names when guys like you and C6 are around, so I dug my own niche.

@Everyone else: Thanks for the support!

I love how in that comic EVERYTHING has the same properties of werewolves/zombie. If you get bit by something or have it's blood touch you, you become a were-thing. Even stuff like, avocados. EVEN ROBOTS. This thing is lunacy. I love it.

Look at this. You might like it.

Love axe cop, again, your skoping skills add the extra flourish and bring the character to life.

And El Gorgo is beautifully done, great linework and texture.

Glad to see more work from you. :)

@Tap: I ended up not going with the smoking feature. I'd have to leave it in his mouth or hand and even then the smoke was a bit too powerful.

@Ghazkul: I've never heard of Spinnerette. I've heard of the band Spinnerette (http://www.spinnerettemusic.com/). In fact you can see on my last.fm page (http://www.last.fm/user/Ewzzy/charts) they're in my top 10. Based on name alone I'm going to give that comic a good look.

Fantastic work, Ewzzy!  I really like Eddie Devil.  You made his colors really "pop."    Good work on the girl's face as well, she's got a pretty intense expression.

I spent a while in Blender trying to export this guy correctly. He started as a male_basic mesh. I'll probably try and skope a trench coat and guns onto him before I'm done.

@Benton: I actually didn't want her to have such an intense expression, but I'm really bad at faces. I had a much more subdued palette at first on both of them, which looked more "realistic" but that's the only thing at all realistic in what I do so i through it away and added a "vibrance" filter to force the colors to pop. You can see the difference if you look at my first draft of Eddie to the final release.

I could have sworn I commented here recently, sorry Ewzzy.

You've established a really strong niche for yourself here by skinning so many non-mainstream characters, and eveerything that you have skinned shows an amazing quality in it's detail and depth. Beautifully colored, as well. Really impressive Ewzzy.
Title: Re: Ewzzy's Efforts - iEl Santo!
Post by: Ewzzy on July 13, 2010, 06:11:02 PM
@Cyber Burn I actually thought for a while that people must just hate Solomon Stone since nobody replied. Ha!
@Hitman I intend to put together a turtlneck-suit version as well as El Hijo Del Santo from the cartoon (http://blog.ewzzy.com/2010/07/santo-contra-los-clones.html (http://blog.ewzzy.com/2010/07/santo-contra-los-clones.html)) including Jet Boots and lazer cuffs. That will probably be based on Ren's Owlman mesh.
@Daglob I thought I heard you mention you where doing an El Santo. I've just been on a real Lucha kick lately so I couldn't resist.
@Murs The cloth work is distantly related to skins I did a long time ago based on Gni's work. I just keep recycling parts from my old work until I start thinking it looks bad or I lose the PSD.
@Spyderman I'm not sure what a "webcomic look" is but really I just try to make my skins really vibrant with smooth lightly texture surfaces.

NEWS: I had my work machine's windows installation die last night, but re-installing windows has become a seasonal event for me anyway. (last time was around Christmas) The good news is I save all my work to an external hard drive. Better news is I actually have a new machine coming that is top of the line and will greatly enhance my ability to work on skins. (more importantly my freelance graphic design jobs)

I also just noticed that my Penny Devlin skin doesn't seem to work in game. My skoping must have gotten out of hand. I'm likely to take another stab at her and re-release alongside my finished Solomon Stone skope. I've gone all out with him and you'll really enjoy his extras. I've got big plans in the future which may or may not come to be.

Spoiler
El Santo y Blue Devil, The Middleman and Wendy Watson, selections from The Venture Bros cast, and a preview of my own webcomic!?

Nice. I really enjoyed the El Santo cartoon when it aired (mid-2000's Cartoon Network Mexico?), and can't wait to see that version of him done, as well as the ridiculous "business casual" look. I've been a big fan of your work for a while now, and this recent batch of skins are excellent. Keep up the great work!
