Title: Geocities closing?
Post by: Panther_Gunn on July 10, 2009, 02:12:57 PM
I just got an email on this today, and was wondering if anyone else had heard anything about it.  How many FF content or related sites are on Geocities?  According to the email, Yahoo will still offer web hosting, but no longer free.  What other free web hosting options do we know of?

I think the only one that used Geocities, as far as I can remember, was the Skindex. And I doubt that's even still around.

Actually, I think there are a fair number of FF-related pages on Geocities. Below is the first page or so of a quick Google search. Some may be obscure, but I have been to at least two of them recently.

Sledgehammer's Voicepackshttp://geocities.com/sledgehammer_ff/ffvc.html
DC Comics Modhttp://www.geocities.com/dannyboy2205/
GogglesPizanno's EZHero Tweakhttp://www.geocities.com/crossboneisland/EZHero_hex_batch.zip
Freedom Portal (hexes and KFs, FX, etc.)http://www.geocities.com/freedomportal/
Lord Ehmsidy's FF Mesheshttp://www.geocities.com/lor_ehmsidy/
Atomic Robot (skins, etc.)http://www.geocities.com/robotatomic/index.html
Suicide Squad Mod FAQ/Walkthroughhttp://www.geocities.com/chastizor/ssfaq.html
etc.

It would be a shame to lose all that content, especially since I would guess some of those folks aren't active and may not be looking to find other hosting.

Sort of. Basically DarkJared had the main .com page, then the content would be hosted on different geocities pages. I remember because a few times one or two geocities pages would go down and you'd lose a random number of skins for the month.

The thing is they actually announced the closing last year.... but it was so far ahead that people seemed to gloss over it (or make geocities jokes). I think that was one of the reasons Taskmaster X moved his site recently.

And I totally forgot that I started one way back just to host a file

I think I'll have to do some site archiving this weekend.

Well, if any of them are reading this, I can help them with finding another home, if need be.
