Title: Installing FFEdit for the Steam version
Post by: moni on June 12, 2009, 05:12:43 PM
Hello!

I decided to look into the problem myself and did find out how to install FFEdit for the Steam version of Freedom Force.

The problem : the FFEdit installer expects a registry key to exist; the one set up when installing the boxed version of Freedom Force.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Distribution\Freedom Force\ergc

It looks for the above.

Strangely enough, Steam does set up some registry keys which look "official" enough. It puts them here :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Irrational Games\Freedom Force

Makes more sense than the EA path, really. In any case, as long as the "ergc" key exists, the installer is happy. It doesn't care about values or anything else apparently. That is, the setup will still install in the usual path and not the new Steam path, so be sure to check that. I'm pretty sure it needs to be installed on top of the game.

As for what you need... here!

http://www.mediafire.com/file/ygztwf2nyxx/ff_reg_keys.reg

It's a registry file. Double click it and it will create the required keys in the Windows registry after a safety prompt.

Here's the "code" it contains. It might only require the very last line but this is the version I used and saw working, so I'm not taking chances ;)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Distribution\Freedom Force]
"Game"="fforce.exe"
"GUID"=hex:4f,01,a5,04,94,b9,b7,48,ae,2b,75,22,a2,f1,56,80
"InstallDir"="c:\\program files\\valve\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\freedom force"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Distribution\Freedom Force\ergc]

I will look into the requirements for FF2 once I'm done with the game.

And an additional note : has anyone ever had a corrupt campdef.dat? Seems it happened just after installing FFEdit and looking around a bit (create a single new map, that's it).

FF1 actually shipped with a registry program, so I think that was a problem they knew about at one point in time. As for the corrupted campdef.dat file, it happens when you hit the "campaign" tab in ffedit for ff1. To fix it, just erase the dat.

Previsionary : I see... I'll have to avoid this tab then :)

Gremlin : Just giving back what I can to the community ;)

== UPDATE ==

The mod tools for FF2 work fine without any tinkering, yay!

Now the real question:  will Character Tool work??   :unsure:

It installed without a problem days ago :). In the end, only FFEdit for FF was being a pain.

My apologies if this was already discussed and I missed it.

Which Character Tool are we talking here, the one for the first game, the one for FFVTTR, or a new version of either that comes with the Steam version of the games?  Is this an install on Vista or XP SP2+?  Mark me as very curious, and hesitantly hopeful.

I can only relate what I have experienced but here it is :

I bought the Freedom Pack on Steam (FF and FFvt3r)
I installed the Character Tool for FF
I used the trick described in this thread to install FFedit for FF
I installed the FFvt3r Mod Tools (includes Character Tool 2, FFedit and nifconvert)

Summary : everything released officially works so far. Have I missed something?

Hey, I'm a bit of a noob here. I'm running Vista 64, and when I used your reg file I still cannot use FFEdit. The computer still asks me to load the game first. I know I'm most likely doing something very basic wrong but I truly know very little about editing registry keys. Please help!

It seems you managed to make it work after all? (cf other thread). Mind telling how you fixed it so others who are stuck can do it easily? :)

Sure thing. I downloaded an .iso torrent of the game and loaded that first. After it loaded via the 'cd',I took the FFedit files from that folder and put them in the steam FF directory.

So, yes you need to purchase a cd or download an .iso if you continue to have problems. After that it's all cream cheese.

Well, gotta go. Spidey has some more alien clobbering to do!

I was going through my Hard Drive today and came across this... hopefully this is what you need.

Reg code for  :ffvstr:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Irrational Games]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Irrational Games\FFVTTR]
"GUID"=hex:5a,1d,ff,11,74,24,3e,4b,ba,5f,0d,03,c2,5e,8e,88
"GameExe"="c:\\program files\\valve\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\Freedom Force vs The 3rd Reich\\ffvt3r.exe"
"InstallDir"="c:\\program files\\valve\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\Freedom Force vs The 3rd Reich"
"SourceDir"="j:"
"ADMIN_RIGHTS"="SECUROM_ERR_ADMIN_RIGHTS"
"NO_DISC"="SECUROM_ERR_NO_DISC"
"NO_DRIVE"="SECUROM_ERR_NO_DRIVE"
"TITLEBAR"="SECUROM_ERR_TITLEBAR"
"WRONG_DISC"="SECUROM_ERR_WRONG_DISC"
"EMULATION_DETECTED"="SECUROM_ERR_EMULATION_DETECTED"
"AUTH_TIMEOUT"="SECUROM_ERR_AUTH_TIMEOUT"
"NO_ORIG_FOUND"="SECUROM_ERR_NO_ORIG_FOUND"
"Game"="ffvt3r.exe"

Reg Code for  :ff:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Distribution\Freedom Force]
"Game"="fforce.exe"
"GUID"=hex:4f,01,a5,04,94,b9,b7,48,ae,2b,75,22,a2,f1,56,80
"InstallDir"="c:\\program files\\valve\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\freedom force"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Distribution\Freedom Force\ergc]

Sorry if this is stupid of me, but could someone write down a step-by-step of what I need to do with that long scary looking chunk of code.  :blink:
Title: Re: Installing FFEdit for the Steam version

You should just be able open up notepad, paste the code you need (ff or ffvtr) and save the file as "filename.reg" (with filename being anything you want just make the extension .reg as opposed to a .txt file)

Windows should recognize it as a registry file, so that when double clicking it, it will add the code into the registry.

DISCLAIMER: I just pulled this from the forums and haven't used it myslef as I'm still using XP and installs form a disk. Messing with the registry can do bad things to a machine, so use at your own risk.

Ohhh interesting. Yipes. Maybe I'll just wait till the next time I go to my parent's place and reinstall FF from a disc, ha.

Thanks Goggles. ^_^

Thank you for the information.
One other question:
From the info you posted
"GameExe"="c:\\program files\\valve\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\Freedom Force vs The 3rd Reich\\ffvt3r.exe"
"InstallDir"="c:\\program files\\valve\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\Freedom Force vs The 3rd Reich"
my computer has steam in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\freedom force vs. the 3rd reich"
my question is would i then change the above two lines to:
"GameExe"="c:\\Program Files (x86)\\steamsteam\\steamapps\\common\\Freedom Force vs The 3rd Reich\\ffvt3r.exe"
"InstallDir"="c:\\program files (x86)\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\Freedom Force vs The 3rd Reich"

I installed the Steam version of both games last night, and I can't get the ffvt3r mod tools to install; none of the reg fixes have helped. I'm running Windows 7 32-bit. Anybody have any workarounds?

I need help with this as well for  :ffvstr:

i even resorted to the risk of adding to the registry, but after pasting that information to notepad and saving it as a .reg file, it still doesn't work. When I doubleclick the file, an error says "Cannot Import (.reg file name/location): The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor."

this is for win7 64-bit, I figured I might as well just add to an older topic instead of making yet another post about this issue. forum search shows there's been quite a few already.

EDIT: got it to work, i think the issue might be trying to install the editor on a modded FFvsTR. reinstalled the game, so there was no FFX, etc. and mod tools installed without a hitch.

Does anybody have this download still? The link is broken.

I can't get FFEdit to install for :ff:

I finally got FFEdit to install. Somebody from an older thread suggested extracting the installer and looking for the full .exe there (it wasn't). But on the upside, it did cause me to open up the extracted files with Notepad, and one just so happened to give me exactly the information I needed.

See, the keys posted in the thread are fine--the installer notices the "ergc" and understands that the game is installed. But then it looks for a second key to find the install directory. And if it doesn't find it, the installer tells you that the game isn't installed correctly and boots you out.

Adding this key should (might) do the trick.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Irrational Games\Freedom Force]
"InstallDir"="c:\\program files\\valve\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\freedom force"

I suppose you can change the install directory if you want.

Hey, Does anyone know how to do this on Windows 10? For Context's sake I have already tried ALL of the codes here, to no avail.I am attempting to do this for :ff: so the  :ffvstr: Mod Tools won't work as far as I know. The Main Reason I'm Attempting this is that FFX Seems like it will be at its most customizable with FFedit Installed, So Any Alternatives would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

Works fine on Windows 10 - I've tried with FF and the new GOG version also.

1. create a .reg file with this in it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Electronic Arts\EA Distribution\Freedom Force\ergc]
@="1500637794497545711474"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Irrational Games\Freedom Force]
"Game"="fforce.exe"
"GUID"=hex:4f,01,a5,04,94,b9,b7,48,ae,2b,75,22,a2,f1,56,80
"InstallDir"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\SteamApps\\common\\Freedom Force"

2. double-click to add the keys to your registry.
3. you can now run the FF editor pack from Irrational

Here's the GOG version in case anyone wants that :

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Electronic Arts\EA Distribution\Freedom Force\ergc]
@="1500637794497545711474"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Irrational Games\Freedom Force]
"Game"="fforce.exe"
"GUID"=hex:4f,01,a5,04,94,b9,b7,48,ae,2b,75,22,a2,f1,56,80
"InstallDir"="C:\\GOG Games\\Freedom Force"
