Title: From Page to Screen!
Post by: BentonGrey on May 31, 2009, 06:12:35 PM
Howdy guys!  I'm still working on the DCUG, but I'm also putting a little thought to simple side projects for the future.  I'm considering something that will need literary characters of various stripes.  I imagine there are enough existent that I don't really need anything made, so I'm posting this to pick the community's collective brain.  What characters from literary, pulp fictional, and such sources have been made?  I know we've got Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, and Frankenstein, but who else?  We've got pirates who could be used for Long John Silver, knights who could be used for King Arthur...but I could use a couple more.  Anyone have any ideas?  Has Doc Savage ever been done?  Any character from a book or the old pulps that could be semi-interesting in FF is a possibility.

Riddle Me This has a Doc Savage in his Pulp Fiction mod. I think C6's Shadow is at Alex's. I posted a Doc Savage photoskin that I did years ago at one of the Character Obscuras. I've also posted The Black Bat, Captain Future and most of The Futuremen, The Moon Man, a version of The Spider from the serial, and am working on a tusked pulp version that I have previewed a couple of times in my skins thread. There is a FF pulp resources Yahoo Group (love their Shadow Laughs attack sfx). Atomic Robot did Bela Lugosi's Dracula and I have a Wolfman from someplace. While not exactly pulp, we have The Phantom, The Lone Ranger, Zorro (who was pulp long before he was a TV character), The Green Hornet and Kato, and I've done The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. I intend to do Paladin one of these days.

The problem with a lot of pulp (and similar) characters, is that they are often just guys suits: The Saint, Captain Satan, The Phantom Detective, The Masked Detective, The Secret 6, The Lone Wolf, Norgil the Magician, Jules de Granadin, The Masked Marksman... even Doc Savage wore a suit when he was fighting crime in town; the jodhpurs were for more exotic locales.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!  Ha, Daglob, I should have figured that you'd be able to help me with this.  I'll check out those Doc Savage skins, and I think The Shadow would definitely be good.  I'm afraid your knowledge of the pulps is a lot more extensive than mine, Daglob, I only recognize a few of those characters!  Dracula could work, as it could be from Stoker's novel.  I'm tempted to use Zorro, despite the strong connections to TV and movies...I'll have to think about him and the radio stars.  Thankfully, the player won't actually be using these guys in what I have in mind.  They'll be enemies, so they don't have to be as varied as heroes.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what skins/meshes I could use to portray Achilles, Aeneas, or King Henry V?  I was thinking that the Roman Legionaire might work well for Aeneas, but I don't know if there is anything that would work well for the others.

What about the headless horsemen from Washington Irving's Sleepy hollow? He could be put on tommyboy's Black_Knight_horse_tvlite
minus the wings of course.

A good suggestion JLAfan, but I'm looking for stuff that already exists.  I don't want to mess with having to request new skins or skopes.

I ran into this, I had an idea on the back burner for a long time about doing a DCUG type of collection for old 30's pulp fiction and movie serials, but like daglob said, the uniqueness was the locations, the traps and the general tone.... which while not impossible to capture in the game, limits the variety quite a bit when it comes to missions and characters. Not to mention map making seems to beat just about everyone into submission.

As for Benton's request, there is also a Conan floating around, and C6's Flash Gordon skin (if you want to count Sunday strips as literature). With a little creative license you could use a solomon grundy and call it Mr. Hyde. Then depending on how left field you wanted to go you got all of like Greek Mythology with Medusa, Hercules etc....

Texas Jack did a transforming Jekyll and Hyde mesh (I did a Banner and Hulk skin for it), and there is an Avenger floating around (and it's pretty). You could take maybe the Grim Ghost mesh, use Nifscope to make the head size '0', but you'd still have to give him the pumpkin. I think I have two Conans...

Valander did an Elric that I don't think he ever completly finished (I've been looking at it thinking about skinning it).

There is a B&W skin that comes with one of the Adam Strange variants that I call Buck Rogers.

I'm assuming that you've already trolled through FXForce and Alex's place.  On the bottom of the Photoskins page at FXForce, the King Leo skin/mesh might be workable for King Henry V, unless you had a different visual in mind.  There's also the TM_MikaalSeptus hex that might be workable for Achilles, unless, again, you had a different vision of him.  The PV_suit_magician_newwand could be workable (with some minor skin tweaking) for Mandrake the Magician.

I can't believe that there is not Mandrake skin, although I don't recall ever seeing one myself.

Thanks for some more excellent suggestions fellas.  PG, I HAD checked FXForce, but I hadn't looked in the Photoskin section, so that has actually proved quite useful.  Does anyone have that transforming Jekyll and Hyde mesh?  Also, Daglob, how about those two Conans?

Running list of what I've got:
Buck Rogers
Flash Gordon
King Henry V
Achilles OR Julius Ceaser
Long John Silver
John Carter of Mars
King Arthur
Lancelot

I think if I can get Doc Savage and Conan I'll be set.

Hmm...I'm doing pretty good on my cast here, but I need some dirty swabs to be Long John Silver's crew.  I seem to remember a pirate with a cutlass being in the Pulp Fiction mod.  If I recall, it had several different skins and would be pretty much perfect.  Does anyone know where I can find that?

So, I've got just about everything I need, but I was thinking that I'd like to include a bit more Shakespeare.  Where might I find something I could use for the mischievous Puck?  Something elf-like or pixie like would work just fine.  Here are two very different depections of him:
http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/archives/images/tv/mirror/puck7b.jpg
http://internetshakespeare.uvic.ca/Library/SLT/images/Puck.JPG
Because of the way I'm going to be using him, I think something closer to the first one would be better.  I don't need anything exact, just something approaching the idea.

Also, do we have any witches other than Red October?  Maybe some black cloaked skins for the darkman mesh?  I'm thinking Macbeth's three witches might be nice foes.

Thanks for the suggestion HD, but I don't think 'ol Pip is quite right for Puck.  He's a bit too nakey.  Ha, thanks Daglob, I'm sure that will work perfectly!

The Shadow... excellent skin from C6 and FX for him at Alex's FF.

Robin of Spiritwood did a pretty good Doc Savage too if I recall.  I have meshes for his Fabulous Five, but no skins or anything else extra.

TONS of literary characters you could include.... way too many to name.  Is this all part of one big project... or several smaller ones?

I had a Pulp mod in mind, with a general story and several missions rough drafted out.  As usual... never got around to finishing.  Lotsa' bits and pieces left over from it you're more then welcome to pick through.

It's for a two mission side project, part of something larger (although the literary characters only factor into these two missions) that I'm not at liberty to talk about at the moment.  I think I've got about as many characters of adventure fiction as I can use.  I think with the addition of Puck, I'll be pretty much set as far as other characters go.  We'll see how things go once I test it, though.  Thanks for the offer though, RTT!  I think you should give your pulp mod another shot.  I for one would definitely be interested. ^_^  I LOVED RMT's homage to the pulps.

Yeah, what Benton said.

Hey, I did skins for The Moon Man, Captain Future and The Black Bat... you KNOW I'm gonna be interested in a pulp mod.

And I noticed that you were one of the main contribtors for the Freedom Force Pulp Resoruce. The Shadow Laughs attack was the fist SFX I ever installed.

The FFPR was my holding spot for everything as I worked on the mod.  I didn't do the meshes or the skins.  That was a handful of other people, like Texas Jack, Robin of Spiritwood, etc.  I mostly did some hero files and fx.

Speaking of FX, glad you like the Shadow Laugh.  One of my few FX and something I'm still damn proud of.  I have some other FX for the Sandman too.

I dunno about starting up the mod again.  I was just an idea guy with a few stories in mind for an an epic pulp mod.  I may look into it again If I can find people who are still interested in the meshes, skins, fx and coding the modes.  Had some ideas for some interesting mission goals that I'm not quite sure were possible.

You never know...

Thanks for the suggestion PG, but using that mesh would require a new skin.  I'm trying to avoid having to have any new art assets made.  I just feel like I've seen something that would work for Puck, but I'll be darned if I can think of where.  There isn't any vaguely pixie or elfish skin or mesh out there?

Hmm...he certainly had the right look, didn't he?  His costume wouldn't really do, though....well, I suppose I'm not going to get around it.  I'll go ahead and request a skin on that mesh that Downpour is on.  Something slightly Peter Pan-ish, greens, browns, and the like.    The first image I posted for him:
http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/archives/images/tv/mirror/puck7b.jpg
Is somewhat close to what I'm after.  If anyone is interested in doing this for me, feel free to use your imagination.  If you'd like to know what it is being used for before you commit to make it, PM me.
