This may be old news - I came here expecting to see something running on this already. Still, my response is simple:
No.
To echo Uncle Yuan.
No.
That is all.
My first choice will always be Matt Damon.
Unless cap needs to be playing the bongos while stoned...
I cringe at the thought of McConaughey or Damon as Cap though for different reasons.
Cap needs to be played by an unknown but obviously won't given the trend in Marvel casting as late.
My biggest concern on Damon is rather or not he can do the character justice given certain personal viewpoints of his that I think would cloud his performance.
Honestly, I would go with someone in their mid-30s who still looks younger. When Steve Rogers is thawed out in the present he is easily in his mid-late 30s. I'd actually almost say cast Noah Wylie in the part for Steve but give him six months or so with a trainer beforehand but shoot the super-soldier scenes beforehand. Or hide the 15-20lbs of muscle he'd practically have to put on.

I'd like to think that (in my opinion) as a decent actor, he could. I just think he has obvious box office appeal, he can be equally ah shucks and bad arse. i could see his age being a concern though. Noah Wylie I just cant see at all. Even with some bulk and muscle, I cant see him doing it. His "Intensity" moments always just look like him trying to scowl with bulging eyes. Though he would be a great Steve Rogers pre-serum.
I really dont mind McConaughey, I think he would make a good cap but you need a better actor if you want a great cap.
In the Ultimates Cap is a hard nosed soldier who is very progressive... by 1950's standards. In other words he would be at least a little impulsive, inapropriate and old fationed. I would like Brad Pitt for that role, he has the look but is currently doing a WW2 movie (Inglorious Bastards) therefore I can assume he can do cap, he has done stranger rolls than that.
Mainstream Marvel Cap is a stranger beast, his politics land somewhere between libertarian and constitutionalist and he is always willing to take on his own goverment when they are harming civilians. For this guy I would suggest Mark Whalberg... capable of some dimension but very adept at being a heroic ham when the script calls for it.
i'd go "no-name".somewhere out there is an actor who has the heigth/build to do captain america! ego's and money always seem to screw things up with the high-profilers.

I disagree. I'd say Michael Caine and Health Ledger were both pretty high profile when they signed onto the bat-films. Robert Downey Jr. and Edward Norton, too, gave great performances in Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk, respectively.
I really like both Matt Damon and Mark Walberg for Cap
OT: the naming of this thread caught me very off guard upon first glance after a nap.
So you thought he was, like, casing furniture stores?
Ughhh..........ughh.....no. No, none of the names mentioned are a good idea...ESPECIALLY not McConaughey. Brad Pitt could probably have pulled it off a few years ago, but he still wouldn't have been really RIGHT for the role. Here's hoping they find someone right, because Cap is important and they'd better not screw it up.
What about Channing Tatum?
Channing Tatum might not be bad but we'll see after GI Joe opens.
Actually, I wouldn't mind Mark Wahlberg.
My issue with Matt Damon may less to do with his "acting ability" and more about the fact that I think he comes across like a prick in most of the interviews that I have seen of his. I'd hate to have promoting a movie about a classic American heroic icon given his general attitude in interviews.
I mean . . . I'd take DiCaprio over Damon as Cap. And if you know me, that's saying a LOT.
I'd love to have an unknown step into the part. I just don't think Marvel has those kinds of guts right now.
Mark Wahlberg? Seriously? That's almost as bad an idea as McConaughey. The man (well really both) is a joke. He's impossible to take seriously, and doesn't look like Cap at all. And he's three inches too short.
As far as these big-names go, Damon is actually not a terrible idea. He's the exact same height, he has the build, he already has proven he can punch people (though I've yet to see him in a fight without bad camera angles) and he's not a terrible actor.

Well I don't see what that has to do with a movie. He doesn't have to be a heroic icon, just play one. And I'd rather not hear DiCaprio drone on about how environmentally friendly the movie was and how Cap is a hero because he doesn't litter during the movie. Maybe he'd be better suited to another superhero "Captain" role.

I think your head would explode if they started talking about casting for an Aquaman movie :D

"Okay guys, this Aquaman guy. Now, what can he do again?"
"He talks to fish, sir."
"Talks to fish?"
"Yes, sir."
"Anything else?"
"Minor telepathy, superstrength..."
"He swims very fast, sir!"
"How fast?"
"Very."
"Hmm. Doesn't sound like much. He sounds like he could use a new image. I'm thinking...romantic comedy?"
"A superhero romantic comedy? Like My Super Ex Girlfriend?"
"That had a shark in it!"
"We can use that! Who was in that?"
"Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman."
"Wilson's not really what I'm going for here...hmm."
"What about OWEN Wilson, sir?"
"BRILLIANT. Get Uma Thurman for the love interest and we're set! Well, that's it with this guy. What's for lunch?"
"Tuna!"

the sad thing is that's probably pretty close if not dead on to the actual process on some of these films
McConaughey has the body for cap and that's it. If they are going for sexy then McConaughey is good, but if they are looking for another Spider-man or IronMan blockbuster then go with somebody else.
The guy who plays Kirk in the new Star Trek movie would be a decent Cap if he trains and bulk up a bit.
i was setting here looking at my dvd collection trying to think of someone.what about BRENDAN FRASER-dye his hair and put him through a super soldier workout program.he's tall and can bulk up well and does good action.my mind is drawing a blank.

I've always liked the guy but I tend to think of him in terms of phisical comedy although I guess he could make a fun cap, and he does have some acting ability (liked him in Gods and Monsters).
Any thoughts of villains you would like to see and who should play them?

Hugo Weaving as Red Skull. 'Nuff Said.
I was watching Band of Brothers again and I think Neal McDonough http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0568180/ (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0568180/) would make a good CA...he's got the look and the WWII soldier down...might be a bit too old though

After his bit as Bison in Chun Li I dont wanna see him for a while. For Tatum Chaning he would really need to bulk up. I havent seen him in GI Joe much except with a full body suit but in his "Fighting" movie he looks very scrawny - like the "before" of the super soldier serum. Now the guy playing Kirk might not be a bad idea look wise but I know nothing of what he has done

BTW, I haven't seen enough of McConaughey's stuff to know if he could do justice to a mostly serious and sincere role like this. I'm not the biggest Captain America expert, but I've always had the impression that he was the embodiment of an ideal. That may not be the impression McConaughey's résumé gives, but that doesn't mean he can't do it.
At some instinctive level I tend to like the idea of chosing a relative unknown for these roles, but I can't really justify that. When I think of great superhero movies, it's not like they have any theme of unknown actors in them.
Spider-Man,
Batman,
X-Men,
Iron Man, etc. all had actors who had done well in other movies. Not that all of the big-name-actor movies were great shakes either (
Daredevil,
Catwoman,
Elektra, ...), but the biggest unknown to star as a mainstream comic book hero recently was Bradon Routh. And, honestly,
Superman Returns was a disappointment at best, whether or not that was Routh's fault or just the poor writing.

Somewhere else said 5'7", and after looking it up, I read an article that said 5'8" and that he's lied about it. It's not important, he's bad for the role and he's stupid (http://yesyouare.ytmnd.com/).

Tatum has bulked up from his days doing the teeny/dance movies. For G.I. Joe and Fighting, he's gotten bigger. I'd definitely say he has a larger frame than either Damon or McConaughey. He also has a lot younger look than either of Damon or Walbherg and is taller than any of them (at least three inches taller than Walberg and Damon). And the guy play Kirk(Chris Pine) is all but locked on to GL. I kinda don't see him being the staple of two new franchise.
I really can't think of a single actor that I actually know who would make a good Cap....I really think that an unknown is the way to go. I don't think either Wahlberg or Damon are really right for the part. Neither one of them really has the "look," even if they both are decent actors. I don't know this Tatum kid, or the guy playing Kirk. I DO know that it seem impossible to find a guy with the right color hair...I mean, the fellow from Band of Brothers is the only guy mentioned so far that is actually blond. I don't say that to be cheeky, 'cause I can't think of anyone either. It just seems weird to me!
Guess my idea isnt a big name actor but the guy who plays Green Arrow on smallville might make a decent Cap if he bulked up a little bit more.
You know, that's the first casting in this thread I've liked. He's a pretty decent actor, he's got the basic look, and he's had some stunt training. I could go for Justin Hartley as Cap.

His voice doesn't seem right to me. Of course, i realize that's a pretty minor criticism, considering that comic-book characters likely sound different to different readers anyway, and that, with the single exception of the characters from
Batman- The Animated Series, I'm not sure I've ever seen a movie or tv show based on comic book characters where they actually
did sound right to me...
You know...that's actually not that bad...although he'd make a better Aquaman...*mumblegrumblemumble*
Not going to happen. DC/ WB won't let that happen.
Personally, I like Mark Valley for Cap - he's got the square-jawed look, and I've liked him in everything he's been in:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0885090/
As a bonus, he's a West Point grad and served in Desert Storm, how do you beat that for a super soldier?

Hmm, he definitely looks right Bujin. I imagine he's probably a little too old though. I've never seen him in anything, but I'll be darned if he doesn't look just about right. He'd need lighter hair, but that's about it.
:EDIT: You know, if Thomas Jane were a few years younger, he'd be pretty good for the part.
I hadn't thought about Justin Hartley but now that I did, I agree. Though he may be too linked with Green Arrow (not a bad thing though) and the film would need some big names in the cast opposite and supporting him. Though with Sam Jackson playing Nick Fury and Scarlett Johannson playing The Black Widow, they could get the big names in supporting roles.
As for the casting process, UnflufyBunny, it's sometimes worse than that!
Who they cast as Cap totally depends on what direction they would want to go with the character. I like Walhberg, Pitt, Damon, Jane...
But the guy I would love to see play him most is Tahmoh Penikett (http://tahmohpenikett.blogspot.com/)... aka Helo from Battlestar Galactica and starring in Dollhouse on Fox. He's a 6'3 with a good build and could probably get 'ripped' very easily. He's a good young actor who is 'known' but not established in movies yet.
HQ, that is a wonderful suggestion. I thought he was great on BSG and I've been liking him on Dollhouse as well. I think I have a new favorite "hypothetical casting".
cant think of his name but what about the guy who was in the movie "the marine".

Is everyone just trying to make me cry? :banghead:
He can't act. At all. In fact, it's like he does negative acting. He can't even make a punch look real.
John Cena as Captain America? Oh, heck no!
Speaking of wrestlers, though, Mr. Kennedy is fairly close to what Captain America would look like physically, if you go by Cap's physical stats in the old Marvel Universe Handbooks. Wouldn't want him playing the character, either, though.
There was a discussion over at Byrne Robotics several months ago about people rumored to be up for the role at various points, with some people chiming in with their suggestions. Someone suggested Paul Walker. I'm not too sure how I'd feel about that.
If they decide to do an Invaders movie, I want Jason Statham as Union Jack and Kate Beckinsale as Spitfire, though. And I'm not joking.
Oh good lord no! Paul Walker is about as much of an actor as John Cena....or a two-by-four, take your pick!
OK Fine.... I'll do it.
I'll play Cap.
There dilemma solved!
I also thought, a long time ago, that Mark Valley looks like Cap, and he can act.
I think I like HQ's suggestion as well - he is a younger guy and probably could do good with the role
