Title: Pod's: Ant-Man & the Wasp released
Post by: Podmark on March 25, 2009, 07:22:51 AM
I'm still hard at work on the X-Force set, my time is usually limited but progress is being made. But since it's been a while since my last preview I thought I'd show you guys one of the bonus skins that will be included with X-Force:

Spoiler

Warpath in his X-Men costume. Skope not final.

Awesome. I love that Warpath costume... It's a nice balance between giving him a new, non-Thunderbirdesque costume (Some of Warpath's X-Force outfits have more tassles on them then poor James has hair O.o) and coming so far out of left field that you wonder if the artist understood anything about the character at all.

Great work sofar, I look forward to adding Warpath to my collection.

The overall skin looks great bro...I do have one critique. The color on the chest doesn't really match the rest of the uniform; it looks a little purplish.

Pod it looks fantastic but, do you think you cooud add the mask as an alpha enabled vx_mask or nightwing or robin or something like that mask... i think it would be seen better.

I'd be willing to do that if someone can find me a mask that matches Warpath's as closely as possible. I have 3 different Warpath skins each with a slighty different mask, and I'm not sure alphas will be effective here as they make the width sides invisible.

For a mask like that, I honestly don't think a seperate piece is needed.

It's a nice, smooth skin. I like it.

Fantastic stuff, Podmark! I've always liked your style, and your skinning has actually inspired me to get to know Marvel characters like the New X-Men and the New Hellions. I knew some superficial data about them, but I started to dig deeper once I saw your skins.

Can't wait for that release.

That's actually a big part of why I skin and share. I like to share the characters and books I enjoy and get others interested.

Release may be a while. I want to release the whole X-Force together and I've only finished 2 of 9 members so far. So that's 7 more skins plus some bonus skin I've got planned. I previewed this one largely because I wanted to remind people that I'm still alive  :P
I might release this Warpath earlier, I'll have to think about it (ie get off my butt and finalize the skope).

Now I need to go bug my skoping friends for some ideas....

Decided to release the X-Men Warpath. It's up now in my Marvel section of HF:
http://heroforce.freedomforceforever.com/

You were Rick rolled for April Fools!

Enjoy it because it will be a loooong wait for the rest of X-Force.

Some good news though, I finally figured out a long standing problem I've had with Nifskope that was making repositioning objects frustratingly hard. When I moved physiqued objects to bones it created this floating node in the middle of nowhere and skewed all the movement controls for this object. And last night I finally figured out why. That was the current position of the first node (name->editable mesh). Anyway point is I fixed it and now skoping should be much easier.

Title: Warpath help
Post by: Podmark on May 01, 2009, 05:42:25 AM
I'd like some input on which skope you all like for my upcoming Warpath skins. You're looking at body type mostly as the extras will just be ported over. Neither skope is final.

The first is a skope on Syn's Warpath. That most notable advantage is the animations.

The second is a skope given to me by Blkcasanova247 I'm not sure what the body is from, but the animations are from Gren's JM Demon (I think it's Demon). A notable problem with this skope is mapping of the back as seen here:
I'm not certain I can fix this through skinning. But maybe it's a minor issue?
Belt isn't skinned on this version.

Please let me know which one you like better. And feel free to give any skoping suggestions you may have as well.

An update on X-Force:
Things are moving along slowly but consistently. Two of the characters are pretty much done, and a third is more than half way complete. Most of the remaining characters are easier and shoudl go quicker.
I'm hoping for a full release in late summer.
Title: Re: Warpath help
Post by: Jakew on May 01, 2009, 06:34:39 AM
The second one ... mainly because I love the animations on Gren's JM Demon.
Title: Re: Warpath help
Post by: USAgent on May 01, 2009, 11:32:32 AM
Great looking Warpath Pod!  I would have to say Syn's mesh looks the best to me, I think the body shape looks closer to what the comic version is.  The JM version jaw bones look too wide and I don't like the slumped shoulders, the only thing about Syn's version that might be a minor negative is that the ankles are too thick.
As for that minor problem with the back of the JM mesh, I wouldnt even worry about it, no one would ever see it while playing with him in the game.

Title: Re: Warpath help
Post by: laughing paradox on May 01, 2009, 11:41:08 AM
I actually prefer the first one, also.

While I personally love Grenadier's JM meshes, I don't think those keyframes would be appropriate for Warpath. I see him as a tank, not a nimble, agile fighter.

The second mesh is by Ren, I think. Because I've used it before. I remember that back thing... Still, I've always liked it.

However, if it were me I'd just use Syn's. It is made for the character, after all.

See to make the shoulder look weird on the first one but I do believe the keyframes are more accurate for Syn's. I still see some weird purpleness on the chest. Also Syn's mesh waist looks cinched in.

Actually... I do like the second one better now. The shoulders on the first look like he is shrugging and I like the thicker face shape.

You know what I am thinking about right now... How come Warpath always looks like a white guy? Isn't he suppose to be native american? I'm pretty sure I've never seen him with even slightly native features.

Title: Finally a new skin
Post by: Podmark on August 17, 2009, 09:13:28 AM
It's been a long time but I have a new skin.

Graymalkin of the Young X-Men. A distant ancestor of Charles Xavier, Jonas Graymalkin was buried alive when his father caught him with another male. Luckily for him his mutant power was to get stronger in the dark and so he survived under the grounds of the Xavier Institute until recently released by a Sentinel attack. He then joined the Young X-Men.

Young X-Men is a book that only had a handful of things I liked about it. Graymalkin wasn't one of them. I don't have anything against him, he's just really bland and not worth breaking the Decimation to create. Still I'm committed to skinning all the students one day so here's another off the list. Skin isn't final.

Why I skin him now? Just needed something easy to get back into the skinning grove. I've rarely been at my regular computer this summer so skinning time has been all but non-existent. The forehead drove me nuts, mapping just didn't allow me to do anything. I leaned on Rafa Sandoval's art for the costume but Ben Oliver and a bit of Yanick Paquette for the face.

Also cool note this skin has been done on a hex of Tomato's cool new male_teen mesh! I started on a different skope but the new one is so much nicer so thumbs up to Tomato.

I'll probably go back to skinning the kids after I finally finish X-Force. No ETA on that, it's all dependent on my time.

Oiy, young x-men. What a heart breaker that series was. I think I dropped it after the 3rd issue.

Gosh, Murs... I know you're dumb and all, but can you do a little research before posting? Pixie's been skinned (by Pod, no less) and there's no reason for ANYONE to grace her with anything else. That honor should go to someone more deserving like... Nehzno. ^^.

Looking good, Pod, but I can't really comment on that character since, you know, I didn't read that series. :P

Looks good so far Podmark. Though i'm not quite sure if a teen mesh is the right mesh for him. I haven't read the comic book series but looking at a couple of pics at comicvine.com, he seems more taller, muscular yet slender at the same time. A more muscular version of Caliban in my opinion. The costume is just about right though. There are some pictures that show a different shade of skin color but it's really trivial since these things happen with different artists.

I will definitely be skinning Pixie again. I like Pixie, not the one that appears in Uncanny but otherwise she was fun in New X-Men.

Funny you mention Nehzno, me and Murs teamed up to skin him. I'll have to get that released sooner or later.

The skin tone is based on Rafa Sandoval's portrayal, he was my favorite artist on the series. His first appearances in the series probably fit more with what you're describing but having seen all his other appearances I assure you Graymalkin definitely should be on a teen mesh.

Maybe, but I'm really happy with the current skope. The male->female skoping might mess up the body shape, but if someone wants to try it I'll check it out.

X-23 preview soon.

I want to say that Wolverine, Warpath and X-23 have been sitting at 95-99% for months. I originally wanted to preview and release the whole set together but ended up with limited computer access over the summer. So I'm going to preview, and maybe release, things as I finish them. Been too long between releases from me and you guys did vote for them. Warpath has one quick edit but I have to fix the skope after I changed the body (see earlier in this thread). It's a going to be a pain.

I'm not a huge X-23 fan. I kinda didn't like her being in New X-Men but that was mostly because she was the new girl in the series. In X-Force she fits prefectly, it is the prefect title for her (also for Wolverine). I also read her minis this year and both of them were very good and my appreciation of the character has grown greatly. I really recommend the minis if you like the character.

Claws pop for specific animations. Foot claws are static though, me and Mig never did find a way to get them working. Release will include updates of my three previous X-23 skins and one other new skin - you should be able to guess which costume (hint it's not the one Murs posted).

And the unmasked face:
Murs your face is awesome - but I don't want to use it. It's a mean Grr face and that's not who X-23 is. She's a cold killer able to detach herself from killing. Read the majority of her appearances and usually she has a flat face when she's fighting.

That said, I'm willing to compromise. If the people (that's you guys) want dual face release I will accommodate.

I agree with you on X-23's facial expression. She doesn't exactly wear her emotions on her sleeve. I didn't mean use that face for your X-Force skin, the one you've got is perfect for it. I wanted to re-create that Choi cover from her Target X mini-series I posted. I've always loved that cover.

Yeah, there's a good chance I'm going to fiddle with his face more. It's bugging me.

I'm kinda going back and forth how clean I want him to look. Been looking at a lot of comics I have with Wolverine in them and some he's a hairy beast others he actually looks pretty clean cut. I'm not sure which direction I'm going to go.

The one thing I'd like to do is have skoped on boots - preferrably mapped the same as male_basic. If anyone has a suggestion let me know. Also I think I still need to fix the refl.
Good news is that the back mapping fixed easily and I'll have a preview of his finished X-Men costume soon.

Last Warpath previews:

Warpath's X-Men costume introduced during Ed Brubaker's run.
I like this costume. When I first saw it kinda reminded me of Nightwing but now I just see it as a cool design. Also I like the knives, they help differentiate him from the other X-Men.

Update of me and Matrix's B&G Warpath.
Warpath wore this costume very briefly during one of the 90's crossovers. It's a nice uniform and you'll be seeing it again in the future as I'll update the old ones anytime I'm skinning a newer costume.

I liked skinning Warpath. I'd like to revisit him in the future and do some of his other costumes.

Is it just me, or on the blue and yellow does the blue on the legs not match the blue on the torso? I could just be going a bit mental.

Actually, now that I look at the other one, his pecs seem to be a different shade than the rest of his body. Whoa.

His mask also looks a bit small under his eyes. Everything else? Right good show.

ah the old chest area problem. Apparently there's some purple in there I can never be rid of.
The body tones should be the same, but my highlighting technique sometimes makes them look less so.

Can't see nothing wrong with the faces Pod. The shape of the mask is ok. Every detail seems clean and well done. The only thing that's distracting me a bit is Wolverine's nose. It's seems there's some dirt/smudge but i know it's supposed to be more detail work. Maybe it's the color shading. Really just a minor thing though.

That's Rictor actually. Warpath's only appearance that I know of in the B&G costume are two small shots during that scene. He does wear the red headband and a mask.

Sadly pretty far off. I think Warpath is completely done and ready to release, so I'll maybe try to get him out the door soon. I started Cyclops last week but then got hit with a huge amount of homework, but he won't take too long. I just have trouble finding lots of free time to skin, and that's going to be compounded because I just bought Civ4.

In a prefect world I'd want them done and all released by Christmas or maybe New Years, but a better target for all of them might be around Second Coming.
I'll keep you guys informed. Plan is to release the characters individually as they're done.

Well most of them have been done already, actually nearly all of them have! And better yet, unlike Blackest Night, the main difference now they are ressurected is is the circuit markings on their bodies!

Saying that, a new, super sexy Selene would be nice, and some of her followers.

Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays if you will!

I bring a gift in skin form:

Cyclops in his current costume. Part of my X-Force set.

Cyclops is my favorite X-Man, always has been. Honestly not sure which costume is my favorite, probably the Morrison one, but I like this one. I like it better than the Cassidy Astonishing look, not sure exactly why but I suspect it's the removal of the belt, the chest X, and different piping that I like better. The forearm and shin guards kinda depend on who's drawing them - sometimes I like them, sometimes I don't. I know some of you don't like the current Simone Bianchi designed costumes, and I kinda agree but this one I like.

Before release I plan to update my skin of his Torn arc costume as well.

Comments/critiques please, and if you want closeups or whatever I can provide.

I'll go as in depth as Sony'll let me here, since I'm a Cyclops fan myself

First, I'm impressed with how your Blue/Black turned out... it has a decent pop without being too dark or contrasted. That can be tricky, but it's done well.

Your issues are all in the yellows it seems, the most glaring of which is the X... it's much darker then any of the yellow around it. Also, watch how much blurring you do on details like logos and piping... the X looks like it has a round bevel, rather then having a sharp edge. Same thing goes for the piping, but In this case I would't fiddle with it so much as remove it... the difference in color and shade is almost enough on it's own, and you're better off shading them according to the contours of the body.

Finally, watch that balance between your shadow and highlight lines on detail work... both the wrist and shin bands would look cleaner with a bit more highlight on the bevels and a bit less shadow (maybe using an orange rather then black)

Overall, really solid work Pod.

Very nice Pod. Pretty much what Thomas C. Ato said. I like his chin, makes him look more alpha male. Is there a chance that you might create this same skin but with the silver and black color scheme? I think it would be cool and fitting even though he doesn't actually get his hands dirty. Anyways, excellent work.

Honestly I wasn't totally happy with the skin from the beginning.

how do you do your edging for bevel and such. i use the pen tool it gives a nice realistic 1 pixal edge without it looking too embossed.
Title: Re: Pod's: Merry Christmas - new preview
Post by: Tomato on December 27, 2009, 05:11:23 PM
Just as a tack on to TUE's post, one way I use to edge is to create my highlight/shadow with an inverted opacity (I typically mask each color I'm working on, so I just copy the mask and flip it) and blur it just a bit (1 pixel is usually enough at 1024, sometimes 2). I'll then duplicate and merge until the edge is sufficiently sharp.

This method is used more or less in tandem with the one TUE mentioned... The blur method is too smooth for piping and details, but the line method can be almost too sharp and pixelated for larger sections like gloves and boots.

I actually have just been using the dodge and burn tools to do any kind of highlight or shadow work. It's served me decently but it's probably not the ideal method.

I haven't figured out how to use the pen tool in Photoshop. I've used it in Illustrator, but it doesn't seem to work the same in Photoshop.

Layer Styles is also an option.

First and foremost, I like the skin a lot. I'm really awful with skinning feet, and you did a really good job with that.

As for a few suggestions, have you considered doing less highlights on the skin? What I mean is only highlights small parts of the muscle, as opposed to the whole muscle. It adds a new dimension to the skin.

Also, the shade of yellow on those big seams do not match the wrist- and leg-bands, but it could be my computer screen. I might suggest using a gradient of three shades of the yellow - dark, bright and midtone - that appear on those big seams across his body as a basis for the bands.

Title: Re: Pod's: Merry Christmas - new preview

I use a wacom also but I find that doing solid lines and details like the cyke has come across as blurry or to airbrushy unless I do a lot of extra steps. I can texture clothes and gear that way but I've yet to make a face that I like. It's why I've not done much in the way of released skins. So any wacom tips would be cool.

Trying to finish up Wolverine:

Old version followed by new.
At the moment I think I'm done with him, but I'll wait for your comments guys.

I'm not going with a Feral face. I thought about it but I prefer something like above. It's really simple, when I think of Wolverine he's the old warrior telling the others how the world works, not a feral beast in the midst of a berserker rage. So that's what I'm going with.

To be completely fair, I feel like Jackman finally grew into the role with Origins... he looks so much more like Wolverine than he did in the Xmen films.

Back on topic though, my only suggestion looking at it would be to get some shadow on his forehead... maybe try lp's suggestion too, but you've got enough subtle detail here that I don't see a need for serious wrinkles.

Time for another Wolverine preview:

The new Manifest Destiny costume of Wolverine. It`s really just a complicated version of Cassidy's perfect design, it's alright.

The belt isn't started at all. I'll be posting some reference pictures soon because I want some advice on what to skope for it. Also the blue might be changed a bit. Most reference has it a different tone.
The rest is done, save for Tomato it ripping apart  :P Let me know what you guys think.

The chest disc is changed and will be used for the Cyclops skin as well.

This skin will be released with the X-Force and Blue and Gold costumes, and maybe one more. There's one more costume I'm thinking about doing.

For this WIP, my one critique would be the yellow of his face mask and his boots doesn't match the yellow of his (body) costume.

*cracks knuckles*

First, Blue is too light for my tastes. To me, Wolverine has always been almost a Blue/Black kind of thing, and this is shades lighter then a Spiderman Movie Blue. I'd say darken it a bit, but emphasize the torso because it's several shades lighter due to the highlights. Also, maybe touch up the shoulders a bit, either make the blue spandex a tad longer or extend it out to the sides more. You can see a gap between the should and the pecs in the idle pose which doesn't look natural.

I notice that you did shade certain areas on the piping, but you probably need to go back over them with a hue adjustment layer to make them a tad more orange. If you look below the belt, you can see where it's a dark yellow shade compared to the orange shading on everything else around it. Maybe make the piping slightly thinner too, but outside of that it's fine.

Button is 50 times better, only question I have is whether it's a 3D addition or a 2D.
Title: Re: Pod's: More Wolverine
Post by: Podmark on January 19, 2010, 02:41:28 PM
The blue will be changed, but probably not the way you want, Tom. Alot of the reference I've seen has it more green looking so I'll probably be adjusting it that way. We'll see.

I keep getting comments that the different parts of a colour don't match. This is really odd as my technique shouldn't affect that much at all.

EDIT:
The button is the same 3D part as before. I just used a completely different technique. Actually I used a lot of different techniques on this skin.

I'll play with the other things.

It could be the actual mesh that is causing the color distortion. I'm not very versed at how to fix that sort of thing but I know AA has mentioned before about it.

I think it's more optical illusion then anything else. The highlights take up most of the mentioned areas, whereas the other areas have significant shadowing. It LOOKS different, even if it isn't.

Took me a bit to get to this but here's a picture of the belt I need to recreate:

I could probably make this with a flat belt and a square buckle but I thought I'd ask what other skoping ideas you guys can think of. Anything out there that looks like this belt?
Title: Re: Pod's: More Wolverine
Post by: Podmark on January 23, 2010, 06:59:37 AM
Ok belt is finished.

Tomato, I looked at the skin in the character tool and gap between the shoulder is more caused by the idle stance, it has the shoulders kinda of slumped inward. In other animations it looks fine but I'll play with it to see if I can get it to look good on the idle too.

New preview:

New X-Men uniform for the X-23 pack that I'll one day release. Ideally it'll include re-skins of my first three X-23 skins but I might cut them to get it out sooner. We'll see.
Off chance I may move the whole skope over to Tomato's teen mesh.

Exciting part of this skin is that I now have the female New X-Men uniform skinned. So when I get back to skinning the kids it'll be easier to pump out the rest.

Cyclops is crawling along. Having trouble motivating myself to finish but he's almost done.

Yeah, when Skottie Young designed the New X-Men uniforms he was trying to create a combination of the New Mutants and Generation X uniforms so that's why the pieces are similar. I really like his designs, when they're drawn well at least.

Post by: Podmark on February 23, 2010, 07:19:02 PM
Update to Cyclops.

(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y246/podmark/CyclopsMDprev2.jpg) (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y246/podmark/CyclopsXFprev.jpg)

Honestly I'm not sure if it's actually better or not. Well the forearm and shin guards are better because I improved the shape.
Some minor face edits, new chest disc, remade forearms, shins, and piping.

I played with the Match Colour function in Photoshop a lot in this one, and I'm reasonably happy with the results.

Next will be a black and silver X-Force variant for my buddy Murs. Then I learn how to a hand gun to the skope and reskin Cyclops' Torn costume.

EDIT:
Finished the What If X-Force Cyclops variant. Not really digging it, maybe Murs likes it more.

Those Cyke skins are fantastic. You should be proud of yourself: I'm totally digging the What If version as much as the first one.

Maybe you could make the silver bits a little bit darker? I don't know, I'm trying to guess what is making you doubt about a skin I particularly find very appealing.

It's not an issue with the skin, just the design. It wasn't working for me...at first. It's been growing on me since I skinned it.

Tomorrow is comics day so probably won't do much skinning. And this weekend I'm hoping to finish Mass Effect 2, but I'm hoping to squeeze in some work on the Torn reskin. I'd like to have the Cyclops 3-pack out by next weekend.
After Cyke I'm planning to either work on more X-23, or start on Wolfsbane or Archangel.

Very nice Pod. I like the what if? variant. I think out of X-Force, Warren has been the one I've been waiting for the most. I love Yost and Kyle's handling of him in X-Force. He reminds me of Patrick Bateman in some ways.
Title: Cyclops reskin (Feb 28)

Cyclops Torn/Unstoppable reskin:

Haven't done the gun yet. I was hoping I could add it to my existing skope, but it seems I'll need to bring my skope to a gun-toting mesh.
I have mixed feelings about Whedon's X-Men run, but I did like Cyclops in the the last two arcs (well of what I've read, I never finished Unstoppable). He was kinda crazy but he also had some real cool moments. Also I love the Morrison jackets, I'd wear it in real life if I had one.

This will complete my Cyclops 3-pack. I still have to do the reflections on the other two, and any of your feedback on this skin. I'm off school this week so I figure I got at least 2 more skins in me before break's over. I'm motivated because I want to get the X-Force skins out the door before Yost and Kyle end their run in 4 months.

So I need to decide what to work on next. Choices are
1. Finish the X-23 updates (original, Fang, New X-Men) and Choi costume.

2. Start on Wolfsbane (X-Force, New Mutants update, possible third costume).

3. Start Archangel (X-Force, current).

I wasn't a big fan of Whedon's run myself. I thought the Danger arc was just awful and most of what went on before and after was predictable in that Whedon did the same bits he always does (says someone whose never watched Buffy or Angel) but Cassaday's art was enough for me.

My vote would be X-23 since the only version I have is your old one.

I'd vote for X-23 and Wolfsbane skins myself since those have been on my wanted list for awhile now.. especially Wolfsbane's early X-Force uniform with the full mask in human and half-wolf modes.

I've skinned the original New Mutants before so as I do new skins of the characters I'll be knocking out reskins of the original looks to go with them. Right now only Cannonball and Cypher's original looks are online, but I did the whole team minus Warlock...I think I skinned Magma, can't remember for sure. Original Wolfsbane will definitely be included with the X-Force skins.

I probably spent the most time on that skin skoping the hair. I went through two or three versions before I had something I liked. I pretty happy with it but it doesn't hope up quite as well when you take a closer look at it.

Finishing X-23 is next. Finished one reskin last night, working on the Fang costume today. Looking for skoping parts is the big thing on this one, I'll be really happy if I can find something for the skull heads. I'll probably use the belt from Tommy's Tigra but I might have to skin on the other parts.

I was thinking about the Mystique skulls, they're not quite the right shape but I might be able to fix that. I'd have to add some teeth...

Also blame steamteck for making that thread about the Akinator (http://en.akinator.com/#) in general. I've been wasting time on it all day.

The X-Force project has finally moved onto Wolfsbane:

Still have to do a wolf version and maskless version, and there's a couple adjustments I need to make but the main costume is essentially done. I will also be skinning an reskin of her original New Mutants costume for release. Big thanks to miguelyanke for helping me with the skope.

I like Wolfsbane, she's probably my second favorite New Mutant behind Cannonball. Her role in X-Force was pretty much a mess though. She never really felt like she belonged in the plot and I found what happened with her bizarre and random. I expect she'll be moved over to New Mutants after Second Coming so hopefully she'll be better used there.

I have 2 of the X-23 reskins done. Still have to finish one more and I have another costume I need to do, but I think for the time being I'm going to concentrate on skinning the X-Force costumes so X's release will be a ways off. Still haven't sat down and tried to skope a gun for Cyclops but otherwise he's all done. After I finish up Wolfsbane I'm moving onto Archangel.

I loved the development of Rhane in X-Force.. but it was a story that could have been told with the New Mutants and not in X-Force. However, the story involving the Asgardian wolf prince was perfect and harkens back to the old New Mutants/X-men story in Asgard.. they even had a What IF?.. issue dedicated to it. However, I'd rather see her in the New Mutants.. Rhane is many things, but she's not some werewolf assassin.

Anyway, I am loving the way the suit looks.. the seams and everything look great. I'm looking forward to your classic Wolfsbane too.

By the way, as a suggestion for X-23's belt, you can try Tommyboy's Black Widow mesh.. her belt could be alpha'd in a way to look like X-23's belt.

In a different book Rhane's plot could have been fine. But in X-Force it was like everyone else was doing one very focused thing and she was doing a completely unrelated thing. And of all the members Rhane didn't belong even being associated with the team - even more than Josh.

I checked out Black Widow, but I don't think it will work well for what I want to do. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Warren is one of my favorite X-Men and I think this is the first time I've skinned him. I'll be skinning his San Fran costume too. I liked what they did to him in X-Force, it allows us to have the best of both worlds.

Well Warren is blonde. I'll look over my issues again, see if there's evidence which colour his eyebrows should be. The problem is that artists tend to give characters simple black eyebrows regardless of what colour they should be.

You've got some nerve lying to me.

Ya, Choi and Crain do different things for the eyebrows. Crain makes him eyebrow-less, but on the cover for issue 5 or 6, he gives him blond eyebrows. Choi gives him a faint black stroke. I guess I'm just used to their depictions of Warren in Death mode. Anyways, can't wait to get my hands on this one.

Good idea UE, I'll revisit the wings. Might have adjust the refl too, the way I did it is causing some parts to appear too bright and others too dark in spots.

For the eyebrows, I'll do some research on them, but right now I still prefer to stick to the blond eyebrows. I think what I might do is make them thinker and darker though.

The top lines on the mask took some work to do, my first attempt looked terrible. That area is a mess mapping wise so I had to do a lot of back and forth with the character tool to get them it to look decent.

Yeah I'll work on the face and wings. No blood splattered version - I'm not confident I could pull it off.

UPDATE:
I've looked through my X-Force issues and I've decided to keep the eyebrows blond. Most of the time the eyebrows are just black but there's a few closeups where they are blond and history is on the side of them being that colour. I am going to adjust them to be darker though.
I may also redo the wings. Sometimes Warren had a simpler wing design, and I may give it a try.

I always thought the blonde hair and eyebrows worked better on the blue anyway. Warren's always been one of my favourite characters, especially after he got a bit edgier with the new wings. I agree with casanova about working on the wings a bit more as they don't have the same flashy coolness I've seen in some of your other metal work. Still, it's a great start.

I hope you don't simplify the wings to much. From what we can see right now I think they look fine. If you want to just up the reflection effect, I've lately gone the route of using 65-75pixel airbrush and making streaks of a mid-range color on top of a flat color then using a tighter brush(like 10-20) of a closer to white color down the middle of the streak. It would be tedious to do each feather that way but you could do a couple steaks under those details and it would still give a good metallic sheen.

You guys might not even see them. It's something I'm going to try.

New skin:

Elixir is the member of X-Force I was most invested in. He was a character I liked from New X-Men and I grew to like him more in X-Force - a team he only slightly belonged on more than Rhane. He brought a different perspective to X-Force and I thought he was used well in a supporting role - save his fourth coma.

I based this skin on Choi's art. Crain did a different version of the costume but it seems to be really simple and Crain's artwork became really murky by that point and he rarely focused on Elixir. This does create a conundrum though. I designed the first four X-Force skins after Crain's work and he gave the team black and red belts, but Choi gives the team black and grey belts. Should I amalgamate the Choi design and the Crain belt for team consistency?

I may take a break before tackling Domino and Vanisher. There's a special character I'm considering skinning in the next two weeks. Also I've got finals in the next two weeks so I may not be working on skinning much.

Title: Re: Pod's: Black and Gold (April 18)
Post by: Podmark on April 19, 2010, 06:23:12 AM
Crain belt it is. It's an easy switch as I created both already.
Interestingly Wolverine, Warpath, X-23 and Wolfsbane - the first 4 members of the team - I used Crain's art primarily to skin them. Archangel, Elixir, Domino and Vanisher - the last four members - I'm using Choi's art primarily. The reason why is that Crain's art got murkier after the first 6 issues and he rarely gave good clear shots of the last three members - the ones he didn't introduce to the team. Choi's art is crystal clear.

Quote from: laughing paradox on April 19, 2010, 05:52:03 AM
Oh, and boo & hiss at waiting for Domino longer!  ;)

It's worse than that - Domino will probably be the last member I skin. Skoping her will probably be complicated, that's why. Vanisher is male_basic plus belt, maybe a thinner body. Unlike the other six members Vanisher and Domino probably won't include any extra skins. I've never skinned either before and I don't really know any other costumes Vanisher has worn. There is one Domino costume I'd like to do but I don't know if I'll include it at this time.

I started the special character, if all goes well you'll see him in about a week and a half. There's a reason I'm skinning this character now.

Outside of that basic body suit Vanisher wore just before his X-force one (which chuckles skinned last year), you wouldn't be able to skin his other costumes on the same mesh. His first and second costumes were... unique. Think snake skin + green diamonds + quilt + hood.

Was X23 ever released?  I see a pic of an X-Force costume of her on your site but don't see a d/l link, but it looks like you moved on to other X-Force people.  Did you re-order your plans or am I just missing her d/l link on the site?

Yeah she isn't released yet. The X-Force skin is done, but I wanted to finish her reskins before releasing, 2 of 3 are finished. Fixes slow me down so I'm trying to keep momentum by moving from skin to skin, when I've got everything ready I'll release the skins. I hope to have them released by the end of Second Coming (Beginning of July) or earlier. Sorry about the delay.

Please don't apologize.  I hadn't followed the thread until now and it sort of jumped topic from her to the other skins about a month ago so I thought I had just missed it. Glad to hear you're knocking out the team as I had hoped to add Domino and X-23 to my roster.  I know you usually make them for vttr only, but I have at least some luck recreating the skopes and adjusting the skins to add to my FF1 game.  It's never quite the same, but beggars can't be choosers.   ^_^
Title: Spoilers (Apr 30)
Post by: Podmark on April 30, 2010, 05:52:22 AM
I promised I'd skin a special character for this week. I skinned this character last week in preparation for the events of this weeks X-Force #26.

Spoiler

Nightcrawler is dead. Killed while saving mutant messiah Hope, he was impaled by the robotic villain Bastion.

I correctly guessed this death months ago, though back then I was just guessing who seemed most likely, more recently I used information from solicits, interviews, and Second Coming Prepare to determine that Kurt was going to die. I like Kurt, he's an enjoyable character, it's sad to see him go. His death was pretty good, but it's just the typical crossover death which weakens it somewhat.

So I've skinned his most recent costume. I kinda like this one, it's fairly simple but with a bit of complexity. Actually over time I've grown to like most of the SF costumes. The only thing I didn't like about Kurt's Bianchi design was the hair but it's rarely been used in the actual comics.

Skin is still a WIP. There's some things I want to work on. Also if anyone wants to suggest a different part for the hair I'm listening.
Vanisher will probably be next.

Unless I messed something up in the zip, the guns should only be visible in the ranged_gun animations. However, I found that if you don't allow those ranged_gun animations to finish the guns will continue to be visible in other animations.

when i played the rumble, he just had blasts from the visor, no guns (as i was using the normal x-men skin and had to be comic accurate lol). he didn't have the guns at all during the actual gameplay. during the bio sections and character select, though, he has em. no biggie, though.

Was asked to help you Grenadier with a standard skin. It was a pretty easy design so I took a short break from X-Force to help out.

Wild Child in his Gamma and Alpha Flight uniforms.

Available now with lots of other awesome meshes in Grenadiers section at Champions of Freedom (http://ffcenter.net/champions/). I hope my fellow Hero Forcers will forgive my treachery.

Title: Re: Pod's: X-Force (June 6)

After over a year, X-Force is finally done!

Still have to finish off Archangel and Wolfsbane, but all the primary costumes are complete.

New for this week is Vanisher and Domino:

Vanisher's costume was easy, tricky part was finding good reference for it. I prefer to use art from the characters main artist - which for Telford would be Mike Choi. But Choi only got to draw his costume in one issue and that issue didn't have any good images of the bottom half. Crain just gave him a black body suit. So ended up using Ibraim Roberson and Lan Medina's art from New Mutants 13 - which may have been Vanisher's death scene.
Had great reference for the tattoos and they weren't hard per se, just time consuming. Very time consuming.

Domino was another time consuming skin. Choi likes to put all kinds of extra details into his art. It's his strenght as an artist but it's a pain for me as a skinner.

If you've got any suggestions or comments for Vanisher and Domino, please fire away.

So yay the main costumes are all done not I just have to finish up the extra skins and we're all set to go .... wait, whats that you say? In the last issue two new members joined the team? (http://www.comicbookresources.com/assets/images/preview/528cb03i5272/prv5272_cov.jpg)

So yes I will be skinning Cypher and Cable (been wanting to update my old skins of them anyway) but I'm going to finish off the current team first. For one thing I need more reference art for their X-Force costumes.

So here's the X-Force status:

So Vanisher will be out soon and the rest will follow as their ready.

Murs happy. ^_^

I'll give that a try.

Also the second Domino skin will be her costume from Cable & Deadpool, which I believe also serves as her current X-Men costume, and I was having some trouble creating the blue for it - so I checked out your video tutorial and that worked pretty well. Just got to play with that a little more. So yes your video tutorials help people. Or me. Do I still count as people?

Well I'm still a ways from being completely done. I might do Cypher and Cable once it's done or save them for a little later if I want a break from black and gray. I've got a bunch of stuff that I want to do mostly recent X-stuff but also some Avengers stuff and some Spidey stuff. I'll probably run another poll - but this time it's just going to be for single skins, not sets. I wasn't happy with how long it's taken to finish X-Force.

Those Tat's must have been tedious.
I skoped your Vanisher onto my X-Factor era Vanisher (he was just a body with a gun) and was wondering if you want it. It has a some customized keys and he can pull out a pistol. I haven't gotten around to skinning it yet so it could do an easy one if you wanted to do a variant (it's just a black body suit).

Finally finished off one of my favorite X-Men - with a bonus.

I've updated the wings slightly and changed the face so it's more grim looking from the version showed earlier.

Then we have his current Angel costume. This was a simple costume for once, I always end up skinning complicated costumes. It's a little too simple though. There were a number of variations for this costume, but this version seemed to be used the most.

The last one is his new costume for the upcoming book Uncanny X-Force which debuts in October. I'm not planning to skin the other members of the team yet, but Archangel's costume looked fairly easy and I was already putting together a package for him so I decided to skin him now. I might have to update this skin later because there's only limited images for the new series available right now.

I'll probably release tomorrow.

Took a break from my X-Force skins:

I was reading the latest X-Position (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=27871) yesterday this time with Mike Carey and was reminded of the Necrosha arc of X-Men: Legacy which starred Blindfold and felt the urge to skin her, so I did.

I'm not a huge fan of the character but she has her uses in a supporting capacity. I'm looking forward to Carey picking up his mention of her brother, that could prove interesting.

Title: Pod's: Young X-Men (August 22)
Post by: Podmark on August 23, 2010, 02:44:54 AM
New stuff!

So skinning Blindfold + a comment by Mike Carey in the X-Position I mentioned above + the fact they'd be easy = Pod skins two more characters from Young X-Men. Cipher and Ink.

Young X-Men was for the most part a poorly done book. Among it's problems was introducing 3 new mutants when no new mutants were supposed to exist and there were about 20 existing students to choose from many of them much much cooler. Well I've now skinned all three of them, including my earlier Graymalkin skin. Why? Because I'm a completist and they were again fairly easy.

Cipher has stealth powers and phasing. She was introduced near the end of the book and was only lightly developed. I'm not a fan of the character.

Ink I hated at first, but most of the book revolved around him and I started to like him by the end. He's actually just a normal human but his tattoo artist was a mutant who was able to give people powers based on iconic tattoo images. Ink has the following powers: a toxic palm, a blasting bicep, a super strong fist, flight, telepathy, a healing touch, and the powers of the Phoenix. So he's the most powerful X-Men, I guess.

I'll have the 3 Young X-Men packaged up and released in a few days.

I've been given some great mesh parts from Bearded and Tomato so I'll be working on those. Bearded gave me a nice new snout for Wolfsbane, and Mr. Vegetable gave me some hair and helmet but you'll have to wait to find out who those are.

Quote from: murs47 on August 23, 2010, 03:17:38 PMMarvel somehow thought Daniel Way was the best person to follow them. <_<

Marc Guggenheim actually.
I could write an essay on the mistakes made with Young X-Men, but there was stuff that I liked in it. It developed Rockslide quite well.

I'll eventually skin the other members of the Young X-Men team; Rockslide, Dust, Anole, Wolfcub, Dani, and Sunspot.

POD! Write a Highlight on Young X-men, send it to me for editing, and I'll finally have another article for FRP. Do it, yo. Know you wanna. ^_^

I enjoy the skins even though I'm not a fan of the characters. Is Cipher even still around? I haven't seen her in a while. The thing I really didn't like about these costumes, however, is how bland they are. That's unfortunate.

Is that new hair on Cipher (that's her name right)?

The hair is from Gni's meshes. I believe I used the Kommando mesh. I also tried using the hidden hair in Tommy's Penance mesh but it didn't look right.

Yeah Cipher is still around. Carey was talking about using her in Legacy sometime.

Hmm write an article on Young X-Men....I could get behind that. I'll try to write something up and get back to you. And yes the costumes were one of the many problems of the series.

Title: Pod's: Tomato/Pod Collaboration #1 WIP
Post by: Podmark on August 25, 2010, 08:22:26 AM
Over the weekend Tomato offered to collaborate on a project. I got 3 nifs out of him and this is the first of those 3:

The New X-Men leader Surge. One of my favorites among the mutant kids.

Tomato provided the custom hair, which I'm very happy with. The skin is essentially done save for the gauntlets. The gauntlets you see there are from my earlier Surge skin. This costume uses a different gauntlet design so I need to do some skoping to finish this skin. The gauntlets might be a bit of work so I may switch to another skin and come back to this one.

Ok (semi) new stuff:

I finished the wolf form of my X-Force Wolfsbane. This features a brand new wolf snout made by Bearded. Came out quite well, thanks alot Bearded.

I'm going to update my old New Mutants Wolfsbane to go with it. I just have to decide how to handle the skope. The teen body I use doesn't play nice with the above skope so I'm either going to rebuild the skope to a friendlier base or more likely do the teen Rhane on a separate skope. That will probably be my next skin, then I'll continue or on with my Tomato collabs or do a special skin I'm considering.

That'd be cool, Pod.  I have all of your X-Force skopes in my game and it's weird not to have her extra set of claws hanging with the group.

At least with Wolfsbane, she was always cavorting with her Asgardian wolf prince, so I don't miss her as much. ;)  And I just use a random skin of your Elixir skope until you are ready with your X-force version. I just want to say again, really great work on the group. They all came out very well.

Thanks guys. The X-23 set is now available.

I'm currently debating whether to update my previous Elixir skins, or just release the new X-Force skin.
Still need to work on New Mutants Wolfsbane. Still have to skope and skin the gauntlets for Surge, should go fast once I finally start. Then I have to finish up Tomato collaborations 2 & 3.

I have a pretty good idea what I'm planning to do after all that is done.

Title: Pod's: Tomato/Pod Collaboration #2
Post by: Podmark on September 29, 2010, 01:37:32 AM
And now the second of 3 collaborations between me and Tomato. This time it's the New X-Men Anole.
First we have Anole's original costume as a member of the training squad Alpha Squadron. This one is a reskin of my older skin.
Then we have his uniform as a member of the New X-Men.
Finally we have his costume as a member of the Young X-Men. I've now skinned 5 of the 8 kids who were on the Young X-Men.

Tomato provided the enlarged arm, the spikes, and a remodeled head. I'm really happy with his work, Anole is a character I've wanted to do for a long time but I was never happy with my skoping attempts particularly the arm. And the skope includes an animation for his tongue.

Anole is one of my favorite New X-Men. Originally he was a minor character but he gained a large fan following and was upgraded to a main cast member towards the end of New X-Men. Since then he's been one of the most visible of the kids.

There is one more skin from my collaboration with Tomato. It's a Marvel character, a teen but not a New X-Men. I'm not sure what I'm going to work on next but it will probably be that or finishing off Wolfsbane or Surge.

Oh and i like the fang costume of X-23 too, her purple costume in the middle (the one with the ring belts and wrestling like boots), and the one in the far right (the one with the boot paddings?). Still impressed with her face too.  ^_^

lol yes. You'll only figure it out if you're up to date on current comics. But it's not a contest or anything, just put that up in case anyone was wondering.

I just skinned Hank Pym. But which version? Ant-Man? A Giant-Man? A Goliath? Yellowjacket? Dr. Pym? Wasp? Click the spoiler to find out!
Spoiler
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y246/podmark/HankPymYprev.jpg)
It's Yellowjacket!

I had an idea for a new Yellowjacket skope based on Tommy's Wasp mesh and was struck with sudden motivation to put it together and skin it. So Hank will shrink and grow like Tommy's new meshes.

Hank is probably my favorite Avengers and I've wanted to skin him for forever, but never did for various reasons. In the future I plan to skin more versions of the character. I have one already started, but it's on the back burner for now. I'll likely return to my previous project now that this is out of my system.

I used Murs' logo tutorial for this skin. It's a good technique.

Yay, you used Murs's logo tutorial! Finally, he'll feel vindicated and useful. Nice job, Pod. Henry is not a character I care much about, but your skin did him justice (is that a compliment? :P). I'm not really fond of the belt though, just because it looks like a flat block of yellow, and it stands out to me in a negative way. :S

But where's your love for Jeffrey Mace/Patriot/Captain America, you dead, undead Canadian?

I dunno, not really familiar with him.

Is this (http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/77/154928-82662-the-patriot.jpg) the costume you're looking for? I'd be surprised if no one has done him before. If not I'll consider him. Just for you Prev.

I'd love to see a Pod version of the Patriot.

Awww, enemies of war coming together and making a truce. :P. That's his Patriot gear, yuh. I had an idea in mind for... something. I believe the current Patriot Mini, which I hope to review soonish... maybe, simplified his look even further by removing the boot stars.

Pardon my ignorance. How visually different would the Mace Captain America be?

When Jeff served as Captain America (and he served longer as Captain America in actual time than Steve did before he was frozen... so now Jeff's the second longest serving Captain America unless Bucky passes the 6 or 7 year mark), he wore a spare of Steve's costume, as he was inspired by him (and they worked together a few times). There're minor cosmetic differences such as size, build, and shield material, and that's about it. Everything else would be reflected in his hero file.

Title: Pod's: Yellowjacket released
Post by: Podmark on October 18, 2010, 03:09:58 AM
I've released Yellowjacket on HeroForce (http://heroforce.freedomforceforever.com/) with one more update:

Includes a :ff: skope. Unfortunately this won't be a common thing. I don't mean to slight FF-only users, it's just that sticking to FFvTTR-only skopes makes my life infinitely easier.

Terrific Pod, one of my fave Avengers stories was where Hank as Yellowjacket took on the main Avengers while being blackmailed by Egghead.

Great skope Sir!
Title: Ant-Man & the Wasp
Post by: Podmark on November 13, 2010, 05:23:55 AM
Today I give you Ant-Man(s) and the Wasp:

(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y246/podmark/Skin%20Previews/Antman-Hank_prev.jpg) (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y246/podmark/Skin%20Previews/Antman-Scott_prev.jpg)

(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y246/podmark/Skin%20Previews/Antman-Eric_prev.jpg) (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y246/podmark/Skin%20Previews/Wasp-Hank_prev.jpg)

This continues my ongoing Pym and Pym related characters series, expect more in the next year. With Hank and Scott I wanted to ensure that they're costumes were distinct so I spent a fair bit of time researching their various Ant-Man costumes. Then we have O'Grady's Secret Avengers costume. I was considering doing some of their other Ant-Man costumes and maybe I'll come back to those in the future.

Trivia Time: Which Ant-Man is my favorite?
Spoiler
Scott Lang. Hank is my favorite of the three characters but I like Scott best in the Ant-Man persona.

Lastly we have Hank's (soon to not be) current identity as the Wasp. I wanted to finish this skin before he changed back to Giant-Man next month in Avengers Academy #7. The Wasp identity means a lot to me. The costume itself isn't fantastic or anything but it represents a period where the character got a new push under Dan Slott in Mighty Avengers. Slott's Mighty was an uneven run but it was basically a Hank Pym solo book and helped move the character past some unfortunate characterization from the last few years.

Wasp is unusual in that I haven't done any skoping for the skin, it's skinned on Tommy's excellent Wasp mesh. That said I'm considering skoping a different hair style. The one I've done doesn't really fit what Hank had during Mighty.

Let me know what you guys think.
I finally decided to update my older Elixir skins so those are in the works right now, and I'll finally get his X-Force costume released. Also updating the older Elixir's will mean updating some of my other student skins so expect those in the new year.

yunno, daglobs Fly-man skope would make a good yellowjacket. remember, yellowjacket use to carry a disruptor gun before he eventually built them into his gloves. something to think about. heres what i'm refering too...http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/ww276/herodad1/P1070056.jpg

Some nice work there, Podman.
As much as I like that they've put O'Grady in a more "traditional" Ant Man costume, I did like his look in the Kirkman penned series, too.
The various Ant-Men you've done here all look really good, and I like your Wasp skin a lot too.
I was torn about the hairstyle when making the Wasp mesh. I knew it wasn't exactly true to "Mighty", but wanted to make it look more like his hair has traditionally been portrayed. Hence it's a bit more conservative in style than it actually was in that comic, in that costume.

I was really disappointed when they changed his costume, but the new one is okay. I was really thinking about skinning his original and Thunderbolts costumes too but decided to save it for another day. He's a fun character.

I think I'll skope on some different hair. I keep looking at my skin and it just doesn't look right. Maybe I'll leave the original one alpha'd out with an alt tga for anyone who prefer the more traditional look.

Really can't thank you enough for the Wasp mesh Tommy. I wanted to skin that costume since it first appeared but was never sure how to skope it. You've done some really great work with Hank, Tommy.

I am loving the Ant-man/Pym theme you have been on Pod, I really enjoy the Wasp skin on Tommy's mesh you did there, and thanks for including the O'Grady version as well, I am really starting to enjoy that character.
I am also a fan of Pym/Lang Ant-man personas (not so much the Giant Mans though)

I'm trying some different hairs right now.
This is from Tommy's Goliath Clint mesh, one of the best hairs I've ever seen.
Technically it should be going in the other direction but I might go with this. I haven't properly skinned it yet though.

If anyone has some other hair suggestions let me know. Probably looking for something like this (http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/1/15776/1421020-tigra1309.jpg) or this (http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/7666/1073500-henrypymm00.jpg).

I don't think the direction really matters that much, but if you're that iffy about it, just about any skoper with mesh capabilities can flip it for you.

Personally though, I think it looks great either way. I'm loving the Pym skins in general... don't hesitate to ask if you need any meshing for any of the antman skins either (I know certain designs deviate from his basic helmet), there's a reason my original username had Antman in it.

Yeah I'm just obsessive about getting details just right. Anyway, yeah I'm going with that hair, it's all done and I'll have the skins out by the weekend.

Thanks, and I may have to take you up on that offer. I don't think I need anything for Pym, Tommy's mesh will cover O'Grady's first costume and I think his second will be okay, but I'll probably need help with Lang's second costume (http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/77/245708-43227-scott-lang.jpg).

Wow Pod, those are a set of really top-notch skins.  'Ol Hank is one of my favorite Marvel characters (I guess I tend to love the underdogs, hmm?), and it is great to see him get some love.  What mesh is his classic-ish skin on?  Is that a skope?  These are great, and I am definitely going to have to get one for my Ant-Man!

Pym and Lang are on a skope of Tommy's Antman1_tf. The Pym one just has a different body build. The Lang one has a little square added between the canisters. The O'Grady one is a skope of Tommy's Antman3_tf with a bunch of extras added on. Wasp just has the added hair.

Glad you like them.

Probably going to close this thread down with 2010 and start a new one for 2011. I've got new stuff in the works and you'll probably see them around February.

Next stuff will be X-Men students. I've got a Hellion set just about done and I'll be working on the other kids. I'll also be working on some more Hank Pym skins and Pym related skins including Scott Lang's second costume with the new helmet Tomato has provided (http://freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php?topic=49799.msg732819#msg732819). Might be some other miscellaneous skins in there like the Avengers Academy girl that Tomato meshed for me.

Happy new year peoples.
