As a few of you may vaguely remember me referring to before at some time or another, I've been known to sing sea chanteys and related folk-type songs from time to time. In an attempt to get some much-needed publicity for an up-coming event, I'm posting the following here, even though I know it won't be of interest to many of you:
I'll be performing with my friends Frank Woerner and Alison Kelley (we seem to be billed as "Frank Woerner & Friends") on Sunday, April 19th at The Borderline Folk Music Club of Rockland County, at New City, New York. The concert's a fund rasier for this year's Mystic Sea Music Festival- this year will be the 30th aniversary of the Festival, which is the largest maritime music festival in the US, and the Mystic Seaport Museum has cut funding to the festival, so this fundrasing concert is important. Wish I could be there, but it's a little far for me. Instead I will just say "Break a leg" or strain a vocal chord or whatever you're supposed to say to singer.

Funny... the first name, Geoff Kaufman, came up in a conversation with the guy at the local music store just yesterday.
:thumbup: Sounds like fun Al. I too will wish you all the best, e'en though I be uncertain as to the correct manner in which to do so in a sea shanty-based environmental context. Arrr?

Thanks! Geoff's an amazing singer, who's performed all over the place. I'm curious about the context in which his name came up, though.

Thanks! (and, just to clarify for people who may be confused, both Chantey and Shanty are correct spellings for the word, though it's always properly pronounced as with the second spelling. In the British Isles, the 'shanty' spelling is almost universally used; in America, both spellings are used, but those within the American chantey community usually use the 'chantey' spelling- the word most likely derives from the French word 'chanter', meaning 'to sing'. Okay... lecture over...)
Performance went really well- it was a great event, all around, despite the fact that some sources gave the wrong starting time (two hours after the actual starting time). I had a wonderful time. There was good food, and the whole concert was video taped- they plan to sell copies at the Mystic Seaport (after, I imagine, clearing it with the people who wrote the non-traditional songs, of which there were a number). We raised over 1,300 dollars for the Festival, and, between this event and some earlier fund raising efforts, this year's Mystic Sea Music Festival is officially no longer in trouble.
After the concert, I went with a couple of other people to a recording studio to do some back-up singing for a CD being worked on by one of the performers. The recording went incredibly smoothly- nothing had to be recorded over- and we were each given a disk with the three songs we were working on.
Maybe tomorrow I'll give some more details.
