Well, his crotch could use a... crotch. Seams and shadows would be nice where things connect. And I think you went a little overboard with the refl.

But the logo is nice and clean. Your colour choice looks good. The darker one could use highlights though. Keep working at it and I think you've got something.

Nice.
Unko's advice is sound.
The logo looks very good, and that's the hardest part of skinning this character, in my opinion.

Thanks Unko, I agree about the refl, when I have time to redo the skin, I'll defenitely fix.

I'll admit that I kind of (completely) cheated on the logo. I found a font that has, among others, this logo included in it.

I temporarily removed the refl files and altered the crotch area. Still going to do some more touch ups though.

Not real happy with this one, still needs alot of work. Both skope and skin.

I doubt many people completely freehand the whole logo. You've integrated it into the skin well, if its from another source.

Hey CB!  Looking good.  That Hyperion looks much better.  That is a very big improvement with some fairly minor tweaks.  I agree with Unko, your color choice is excellent.  He's looking great!  The archer is looking nice too.  Who is he?

Thanks for the compliments Benton. As for the archer, he's the Black Archer from the Squadron Supreme.

Yeah, finding a logo somewhere else is totally not cheating. You still used shading on it, and it blended in great.

I quite like that archer skope, actually...

If you want some tutorials there's this (http://frworld.wikispaces.com/Skins) and this (http://freedomreborn.net/archive/index.php?topic=41904.0). I did one about seams and, I think, a logo one too. They are pretty old, but are basically the same technique I use now as far as I remember.

Still a work in progress, I have to redo the skope because I did something that messed up the gun. It won't disappear now. The cuffs on the ankles need to be redone as well.

Looks great.

But here I ma sitting here thinking that if you hexed off the collar and cuffs you would have a start on a Jon Sable.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I appreciate all the encouragement. However, there's always a 'however', due to family issues as well as classes starting up again, I will be closing up shop for a little while. Take care.

Don't worry about none of that real life stuff. People understand. That always comes first.

I mean, heck, I hardly do anything FF related these days. (Well mostly because I'm so lazy)

But when you do come back make sure to finish this fella up. I'd love to see how he'll come out.

No worries CB!  We'll still be here when you find the time again.  Good luck in your classes!

I only just read your last post.
I hope real life is going OK, and that the classes are working for you.
When you have the time and inclination, you'll get back to skinning.
I look forward to seeing you continue to improve.

Wow!  A Firestorm with the good professor looking over his shoulder!  That's too cool.  This is all nice looking stuff.  I espescially like the fellow with the Union Jack on his chest and the guy bellow him...I can't remember their names. :P

These are cool. I love the rainbow lanterns. The S-shield on your Superman skins is a little droopy, though. I'd recommend shrinking or shortening it and pulling it a little further up on the chest.
Title: Re: Burnt Skins
Post by: WyldFyre on March 01, 2009, 03:07:30 PM
Wow! Firestorm looks interesting. Just a thought though. Stein always appeared with glasses. Maybe you could look at skoping some on. I agree about the "S" symbols too.  Overall though, great stuff.  Hope to see more.  Keep 'em coming.
Title: Re: Burnt Skins
Post by: tommyboy on March 02, 2009, 12:21:34 AM
It could be the mapping on the mesh and the way its rigged that's distorting the Superman logo in that pose (and since they are my meshes I take the "blame" for that).
I wouldn't be surprised if in an "idle" pose the logo looked normal. It's because the vertexes on the torso are physiqued at the top to the top spine bip, in the upper-middle they are linked to the top and bottom spine bips and at the waist to the bottom spine and pelvis bips.
This means that in a pose where the chest is "puffed up" by pushing the top spine bip back, the front of the torso stretches, as does any logo on that bit. You can see the same effect on Firestorms band which seems to "kink" down just above the abdominals.

Post by: Cyber Burn on March 03, 2009, 01:05:59 AM
Thanks for looking out for me Tom, but before you take all the blame, let me double check the skin on my end to make sure that it's not just the skin.

I had definitely thought about the glasses and hair for Professor Stein, but that's a long way coming. Right now the second body is just alpha'd out, at least until I figure out how to detach the head.

The Shield is still a work in progress, I'm not real happy with the way it's turned out.

Again, thanks for being supportive on both the skinning, and personal levels.

Wow, kind of forgot about this thread.

Tap, thanks for the offer. Unfortunately, I knid of overwrote the file with something else.  :banghead: And I just haven't had the energy to re-do it.

A little homage to the justice League: The Vengeance Directive

Blue Bolt
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/Cyber_Burn_33/BlueBolt.jpg)

Dragon Knight
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/Cyber_Burn_33/DragonKnight.jpg)

Lightyear
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/Cyber_Burn_33/Lightyear.jpg)

Star Cavalier
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/Cyber_Burn_33/StarCavalier.jpg)

Mind you, this is a work in progress (just like everything else it seems). I just felt like trying something a bit different, both in technique, and in design. I may or may not finish these, I guess it just depends on time and energy.

These are originals, more of an homage to the Justice League. I'll work on them a little bit here and there, hopefully get them finished eventually.

In the meantime though, here's another one. A member of the Minuteman Militia, a vigilante group that idolizes Minute Man, and violently guards Patriot City from criminals.

Great stuff burnt. I kinda picked up on your old justice league stuff and started my own versions in a different plotline(that i have yet to write). But, i still wish your stuff hadn't gotten wiped. Do you only skin tommy's stuff? Either way it all looks great.
Title: Re: Burnt Skins
Post by: tommyboy on April 05, 2009, 12:12:09 AM
Looking good. You seem to be developing a lighter touch on the detailing, relying less on black lines to define costume details (which for comic book readers is the default way to define everything, because that's how it looks in the comics).
Keep it up, you are definitely improving.

What's up Doc?... Sorry, I couldn't resist.  :D

I do mostly skin Tommy's stuff. It's nothing against anyone else, I have madd respect for all the meshers, as well as all of the other talented members of the community, but I really like the way that Tom's meshes are shaped. Plus, I that gives me consistancy with my characters. If you look on the previous page, you'll notice a couple of skins on Renegade meshes, I also have a bunch of unpreviewd skins for meshes by other creators.

Thanks for the compliments Tom. I started doing the Black lines because the skins were to choppy, but I started over doing the lines, so now it's back to basics so I can find another way to clean up the skins.

I have a hunch they will not be picked up, if only becuase many might require skoping. If somone can accomplish certain skins without skopes i would love it, but we will see. I'm going to upload these to my photobucket now, is there any reason i shouldn't? Meaning copy right stuff...

I agree. Those are some very good designs Cyberburn. The skins are nice, clean and simple. I think it's got that golden age comics feel in them. I'm really like those logos on the Jade Panther, and the Crimson Crusader. I also think you did a very good job on the metal parts of their costume like with Mega Power and Crimson Crusader. And you even managed to give a sort of fur texture on Jade Panther's gloves, belt and boots!  Nice job.

I like the designs on these, Cyber Burn. I actually like your personal avatar the best. They really look like characters I could imagine in an old comic. I would like to suggest some highlights and seams on your skins, so we can see the boots raised off the skin, or the chest logo having a more pronounced look.

Cyber Burn is defenitely one of my favorites. After the last crash, I really struggled to replicate him, but in the end, I decided to go for more of a heroic look.

I agree about the highlights, but I'm not really sure how to do those, I need to go back through the tutorials and see what I can do. I thought about adding seems to Crimson Crusader and Mega Power, but I wasn't sure where to add them to get the best effect.

The logos defenitely need improvement, but when I have tried to add to them, they end up looking really cluttered.

No, I never was happy with "Titano Sphere", so I still need to redo the skope. The only one that I actually finished is "Dark Saturnian".

Dark Saturnian is the leader of the PSA - Power Squadron of America. Along with other members: Titano Sphere, Turbomaster, and the Bronze Bat; the PSA enforce a swift and violent brand of "Justice" in Golden City. Their methods often lead them into conflict with the American Defense League.

In keeping with  :ffvstr: Four Man teams, I've decided to limit all of my teams to four members.

i like how dark saturnian turned out, good texture on the hammer. i know you had a couple of other characters for your american defense league, if you're keeping the team at 4 members, will you still finish the other characters? do you have other plans for them?

For the most part, the skins for the SA are at about 80% complete, I'm holding off finishing them till the arthritis in my hand mellows out. As for the other characters who got dropped from the ADL, I do have plans for them. Eventually anyway. Thanks guys for the compliments.

Clicky. (http://code.google.com/p/gimp-dds/)  Incidentally, Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net), another very nice, free digital graphics programme (which also handles layers), has native DDS support.

If the plug-ins don't work I highly recommend amd's compressinator as a standalone app to convert files to DDS. I've had a higher success rate and with near perfect quality than conversions with the DDS Converter 2 program.

Thanks tiobe, I'll check out your links. The problem with Paint.Net, is that some skins get opened up and their color change. So I am just looking for alternatives.

Which one Daglob?  I've found both work for me,  for the compreesonator just make sure you get the right msi to install it, 32- or 64-bit

DDS Converter 2. It lets me navigate and choose files, but the Convert button stays grayed out. I load up Virtual PC and it will let em convert stuff.

The plug in for Photoshop I have that would let me work on DDS doesn't work with the new version of PS. I'm going to try the one for Gimp and see what happens.

Oh yeah... You need to click on the [..\] button first then you can convert.  It's like if you were changing the directories, but it doesn't really do anything except allow you to convert.

Yeah you're right about the new PS plugin too.   Not happy about that.

I really cant express enough how great the compreesonator is though

I normally use Paint.Net, but I am trying to expand myself artistically, which is why I started playing around with GIMP.

DDS Converter 2 wouldn't let me convert, I don't remember what the problem was, it's been a while since I've tried it.

That all said, the weather is warming up out here, so the arthritis isn't as bad. I'm hoping to at least to finish some of the skins and skopes that I've started.

I like the designs you've got here CB.  I think the ones for Saturnian and Turbomaster are particularly nice.  I think Turbomaster's torso could use a little something more, though.  Maybe you should continue the motif from his legs onto his arms?  Perhaps a symbol on his chest?

I think I agree with you about the motif continueing from the legs to the arms, I may have to give that a try. As for the chest area, here's the original:

If you start with a dark bronze color and use the dodge and burn tools, you can get a "metallic bronze" color, although you will find that you never get the same effect twice.

I think the logo is what kills Bronze Bat. Maybe instead of a cross, try making the yellow part into a stylized bottom bat shape?
Oh, and... make it bronze! A bit browner, and get some refl on there. You don't always have to go all out with refl either. I find using it subtley for various surfaces looks quite good.

I see on Turbomaster you have started a bit of seam stuff. Seams are good. Very good. I highly encourage them. They can turn a just okay skin into a darned good one. I did a tutorial for those somewhere, and you could probably find others. Check a skin that you like to see if you can emulate it. You'll come up with your own way of doing it eventually.

Also, try more contrast in highlights and shadows. I see you played with it on Titano Sphere, but perhaps just actually changed the contrast? This ends up making things look grainy (as you can notice in the mask area). A better way to do this is to draw the shadows and highlights on different layers over top of the skin itself, and blend them in.

You've got interesting designs, but I know you can do recolouring now. I'd like to see these kicked up a notch. You're totally ready.

Great designs, they look a little with their counterparts, but in the classic "Alternate reality/divergent history" take.
Dark Saturnian is looking very good, maybe he needs a little more detail in the boots, like seams or some play with the dodge and burn tools.
Titano has a very creative design, and i really liked the colors and details. Great work!

Inspired by "Mato's Ode to Benton thread, I had to jump on the Earth 3 bandwagon.

Killshot the Archer - Antimatter version of Green Arrow.

The Aquatic - Warlord Emporer of the Seven Seas.

Obviously, both need a lot of work, but at least the concepts came out the way that I wanted them.  :D

Title: Re: Cyber Skins
Post by: Tomato on February 23, 2012, 03:33:45 AM
I was going to comment on the design over in the Ode thread, but you've obviously worked on it more since the initial post, so I'll comment on it here.

I'm going to say up front that I really do love the design of Aquatic. It's on the simple side, but unique in a way that I rather like. With a bit of tweaking here and there, I could easily see this as one of the top designs in the thread. I'd be proud to use it.

That said, where this falls a tad flat is more on the side of execution. I don't want to go too in-depth about it because I'd probably overwhelm you (unfortunately I get more picky with things I actually like) but I'll make a simple suggestion:

-With extras, especially those that are supposed to be metal, gradients are your friend. Some simple gradients on the yellow pieces would help give them a bit more depth, and it'd really make the skin pop.
Title: Re: Cyber Skins
Post by: Cyber Burn on February 24, 2012, 12:52:43 AM
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions guys.

'Mato, what kind of changes were you thinking about?

It's been a while since I've skinned so I know I need a lot of practice. In regards to the extras, the gradiant didn't show up very well, I need to use more of a contrast in the yellows.
Title: Re: Cyber Skins
Post by: Podmark on February 26, 2012, 04:00:13 PM
Very nice designs.

When it comes to extras I usually like to lighten or darken the edges depending on where the light will hit. Basically it depends if they're usually facing upwards (gloves) then I lighten, or downwards (a shoulder pad) I darken. Gives it a more 3D look.
Title: Re: Cyber Skins
Post by: UnfluffyBunny on February 26, 2012, 06:43:39 PM
nice designs, and yellow is an evil evil color to skin >.>
I'd like to echo Podmark's advice, it always helps to take a step back and think about lightsources, and also how edges appear, the very edge of an object is important to establish to bring in depth, a usual representation is a lightness towards the edge followed by a sudden dark representing the actual edge, if that makes any sense atall >.>, but the most dynamic effects (in my oppinion) comes from working out the balance of where to put your lightest point and where to put your darkest, maybe i'm just rambling.... feel free to ignore me XD
aaanyway, before I derail myself, I like that you've kept the mesh effect to the shirt, but I can barely make it out, adding some highlights into those edges will help establish what they are.

Working little by little on the extras, but trying not to go overboard. Still got a lot to do before I re-submit to Tomato's thread. I'm working on gradiants, reflections/lightmaps, and shadows. That said, I haven't touched the male_basic portion of the mesh again yet.
Title: Re: Cyber Skins
Post by: Tomato on February 26, 2012, 10:32:17 PM
MUCH better. Really starting to see the detail on the extras now, makes the skin pop quite a bit more.

As for what I was going to suggest... it's mostly on color usage, but I did a quick edit of your screen just to show it better. Putting in spoilers so as not to derail the thread too much.

Spoiler
(http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/7679/editsz.jpg)

-Beyond this, I'd suggest incorporating the scale mail texture you used into the refl a bit more... I usually keep a texture like scales mostly to the refl and only slightly on the standard tga, gives it a better effect overall. Also, don't be afraid to experiment with the yellows a bit, to make them more of a gold color then a shiny yellow... look at AA's femLoki or C6's Red Robin.

Actually, it's more likely you're putting the lines on the wrong part of the wireframe. The "top" of the belt is not the top of the wireframe... most belt maps have sections at the top and bottom for where they go into the torso.

Spoiler
(http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/1993/examplei.jpg)

Most belt wires aren't exactly like this, but the one on my av was the best example I had on hand from my own skins and I mapped the bevel sections a bit smaller then most male belt versions. Basically, the things you want to note here are:

-the highlight at the top and shadow at the bottom are both slightly inside the boundaries of the middle section... if you put them centered on the line they tend to look goofy.
-On my belts, I usually darken the space in the top and bottom sections (I don't know why I made the bottom section is brighter under the shadow line... but wevs, you never really see it anyway) to put more emphasis on the raised portion of the belt.

One thing you might also look at it the belt on Teknos... for that one, I used highlights on both the top and bottom of the skin. It doesn't look right on all belts, but I usually experiment with it because every so often a highlight at the bottom will make the belt definitions a touch sharper
Title: Re: Cyber Skins

So I decided to strip the effects and redo the basics, I took some of Tomato's advice (Face and belt) and am pleased so far. I'm still trying to get all the yellows to match after playing with the gradient tool, but I'm still struggling there. Made some changes to the base design (Boots and gloves).

The helmet is really throwing me off in regards to getting the colors where I want them. Once I'm satisfied with that, then I'll redo the reflections. Any and all advice is always welcome and appreciated.  Thanks for all I've gotten so far.

CB, my friend, I really love the tribute to Flash.  That's awesome.  He's missed.

I also love your anti-matter designs, of course.  That Aquaman design is just too awesome.  The final version, with the reflections and such added, looks really fantastic.  That is just a great design, and he came out looking even better than I expected....I'm now seriously tempted to change out the aquaganger in the DCUG....you know....I may just use AA's design as a heroic Black Manta and use this one as an Aquaganger......hmmm....

Also, I like Killshot.  I sorta' liked the earlier color scheme, but the green makes him instantly recognizable.  I think the cowl, reminiscent of the longbow hunter-era GA, a design I never liked for him, works well for a villain.

Don't put words into my mouth, ho-face. Even though I personally use vectors all the time, it's not really essential skinning knowledge like brushes, smudge tools, and layers are. As it is, I have no earthly idea how you photoshop people can even use vectors the way the software is set up (Paint Shop Pro ftw!) so I don't hold your lack of knowledge against you.

I've been meaning to ask you if you had an update on your avatar, when i saw the it among the list in the Character Tool preview of Flash22798.

It looks great Cyber. The gun looks cool too. Looks kinda high tech, like a space gun or something. Is it a specialized gun with specialized ammo similar to the Paladin's?

Hmmm...let me see...what's missing?...how about a holster for the gun or something? Also, a story background i guess. You usually give some, but i'm not sure if you've already given it a long time ago. :)

I see that you've kept the design that Glitch Girl made. With the colors and design, i'm getting a somewhat patriotic vibe? or he could be a hero or space hero from the future?

But i think i remember you mentioned before that he was an assassin or something. Costume could also pass for a leader of some patriotic/anti-patriotic/radical terrorist group?  :P

Looking forward to seeing a hero file if there is one. Just to see how he fares against Flash22798.  ;)
Title: Re: Cyber Skins
Post by: Cyber Burn on October 04, 2012, 11:53:25 PM
Glitch's design was fantastic, and once I got the color scheme where I wanted, I just stuck with it. As for the holster, I left it off so I could switch to other weaponed male_basic meshes if I feel like and just drop the skin in without having to mess with Nifskope. Currently the gun has a few different settings so that it's easier to get past passive defenses.

QuoteCostume could also pass for a leader of some patriotic radical terrorist group?

I like that, but I would need minions. Otherwise, I haven't really put the effort into a backstory.

I have a hero file, but couldn't bring myself to test Flash_22798 against him.

Anti-Verse version of my Avatar. Called "Cyber_Lord", he is a master of weapons and a merciless, conquering villain.

The extras are the standard from the Ares mesh by Gren, I just have to have time to skin those. As for the design of the character itself, I like the original design too much, so I kept it, just modifying the colors.

Unfortunately this isn't a new issue for me, it's just gotten a bit worse. It wasn't as bad when I was using Paint Shop Pro way back when I frist started skinning, but Paint.Net isn't as versatile, or as forgiving, making skinning a little more difficult.

I am starting to adjust to the new meds, so that's a good thing. Still not quite ready to jump back on the skinning wagon yet though. Soon hopefully.

Here's a couple of very basic skopes and skins that I did.

The Manhunter from Neptune

The Martian Manhunter

Very simple and easy skins.

A couple more easy skins and skopes.

Max Mercury:

Human Bomb:

As I start doing better, hopefully my skinwork will get back at least to where it was.

The secondary mesh is somewhat transparent and the skin is only a placeholder to see proof of concept. DC Comics' Captain Triumph.

Wow...Half way down page 4! Guess I've been slacking off a bit.

So for my first post in this thread in 4 1/2 years, and to brush off some of the dust, I've Kittbashed the Heck out of Murs' Base Skin in order to get my self a semi-functional "Minute Man" Base Skin. It still needs some polishing, which I'll do as I go, but for now, I'm pretty happy with it.

(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/Cyber_Burn_33/Minute_Man_Base_Skin_V1_zps01cpobhn.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/Cyber_Burn_33/media/Minute_Man_Base_Skin_V1_zps01cpobhn.jpg.html)

I will say that I'm very appreciative to all the Skinners who have released Base Skins over the years, because there is no way I would be Skinning without them.

YOU GUYS ROCK!!!  :fflogo

Crosspost from the FREEDOM FORCE ANNIVERSARY CHALLENGE

Here's Minute Man 2000, still very much a WIP:

(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/Cyber_Burn_33/Minute%20Man%202000s%20V3_zps7ddki800.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/Cyber_Burn_33/media/Minute%20Man%202000s%20V3_zps7ddki800.jpg.html)

A very big "Thank You!" to Daglob for Skinning the Staff for me, the Gold is a perfect contrast to the Red, and there is no way that I could have done that on my own.

Sidenote: Does anyone want the Minute Man BaseSkin I Kittbashed from Murs' most awesome Base? I have it in (.PDN) Format for PaintDotNet, and then, in both (.TGA) and (.DDS) Formats. Consider this a placeholder until a real Skinner makes one, but still, I'd be glad to make this available.

These are basically just fodder, but I really wanted to have a consistent look for them, which is why I re-used the same parts and the same Base Skins. Essentially to have a "Team" feel to them, especially since there are about 10 more that I decided not to delete from my Laptop in case I ever find time to work on them.

As for the Weapons, all are from one of my Weapons Packs, from the Mobile Game; "Call of Mini Infinity", it's actually one of my favorite sets, and there's a decent variety of Weapons in it.

Let me answer the first question right off the bat, no, I have not come out of retirement. But I have been sitting on these for quite some time (ok, a really long time), and I needed to let off a little bit of steam, so I've been trying to work on them a little bit at a time for a month or so now. This was a leftover Idea from the Marvel Legacy concept that Murs47 had started way back when.

Essentially, the Canadian government shut down all Superhuman and Mutant activities (Alpha Flight, Beta Flight, Gamma Flight, Etc.) in order to keep the American government from sending their Mutant Hunting Sentinels into Canadian boundaries. However, the new Black King of the Hellfire Club reprogrammed them to intentionally attack Canada, and bring all Mutants to him so that he may use his control collars to subjugate them.

With nearly all Superhumans and Mutants either captured or killed, all of Department Q's Guardians wiped out, there was no one left to fight the Black King and his army of Sentinels...or was there? Having barely survived the onslaught, Colin Ashworth Hume, also known as Windshear of Alpha Flight, already powerless, rebuilt his Winshear armor to simulate his powers and then began recruiting other Superhuman and Mutant individuals all across Canada to form a new team of Heroes, a new Flight...Sigma Flight.

With the exception of "Windshear" who was a long time Alpha Flight member, none of the other characters were meant to have ties to current or past Marvel Continuity.

That is quite the set and I too am wondering who each is.

Since these were all built off of Gren's "Imperial Guard" Meshes (with the exception of "Windshear"), once you see their names, it'll be pretty easy to figure out who the characters are, and then from there, you can pretty easily figure out what their power set will more or less be.

Yeah, you can thank Daglob for the other set that I have in progress, I don't know if or when it will ever get finished, but it's been on the drawing board for quite a while now as well.

So later on today, hopefully, I will re-post the Sigma Flight pic with the names of the Characters attached, along with a list of which Meshes were used as bases for each. That should give you an idea as to what each character's power set will more or less look like when I get around to doing the Hero Files for them.

So here's what happened, I had wanted to give these guys names that were translated into French. Some of the names ended up being the same as their American counterparts, some translated alright, and others, when translated, CTool2 wouldn't acknowledge their presence at all, so I ended up having to make some adjustments. By "adjustments", I mean I either slightly altered the character's name, or just left the American version. So who knows, maybe I'll create another team based on these Meshes, except this time I'll choose a random country whose language is different enough to make their names different. But for now, at least you can see who is based on whom.

So, not quite finished, but maybe eventually...

In a world where the Justice Lords continue to maintain control over the population of the  United States, The United States Government has secretly brought together 4 individuals and created a new team of "Heroes" to bring the Justice Lords down. But these "Heroes" have their own secrets as well, and after the Justice Lords fall, all will be revealed.

But you're asking:

"Didn't the Flash die in the Justice Lords dimension?"

"Wasn't that what set them off?"
