Title: Future Foundation Spidey
Post by: ghazkul on January 25, 2009, 07:38:50 PM
Hey everyone, this is my first proper skin. I was sooo looking forward to an Atrocitus skin that I couldn't waait and so tried making one. I works best on Ren's Parasite mesh and i dont have character viewer so @,m gonna just have to show the un-meshed skin. It's not great and I had to cheat by taking the teeth from a pic I had, but the rest is free hand with a mouse and using general base skins. So, yeah, critiques welcome!

If anyone wants I will put it up on my Yahoo group.

P.S. Sorry for the bad quality image, the actual file is better quality.

A nice looking skin.
Not that keen on the look of the character (in the comics, not your skin) myself, but I think you've done a good job capturing him.

I am entirely too unimaginative to comment on a laid out skin.. can't comment till on a mesh so.. umm looks nice?

Thanks. If anyone knows where I can get a character viewer I'll put up some pics of it on the mesh.

or got to sourceforge for Nifskope, you can view on that, but it's a little harder to get skins to appear as you need to set it up.

actually I like it, but ya might need to do some touchups so it's more distinctive from the red of the costume. It's looking a bit vague and too similar (to me) to the color of the costume.
Title: Re: Redfire's Attempts At Mediocracy
Post by: Gremlin on January 25, 2009, 10:45:45 PM
Agreed, the face could use some more shading around the neck or a slightly different color. Other than that, I love it, and the Parasite mesh is an excellent choice. A wonderful first skin, especially considering you didn't even use the character tool!

I thought of that, but I was scuppered by two things.
One: I dont know how to make effects.
Two: I don't know how to add effexts to :ffvstr:
If I did i would SO create an effect like the Frozen effect, but pink for my Star Sapphires.

Making a custom effect in the game is a lot easier than you think. For that pink bubble effect, all you would need is to have FFX and use the Crystalize swap power. Look at your FFX game manual, (which you can find here: C:/Program Files/Irrational Games/Freedom Force vs The 3rd Reich/ffx3/manual), then look for Crystalize under the "Attack Types" tab to find more information about it.

Regarding your skin, it looks pretty good. Like some have said, the red of the face looks too much like the red of the costume.. you can just change the hue or brightness level to adjust that. Your skin could also benefit from some highlights. You can read a great tutorial on highlights here: http://frworld.wikispaces.com/skin+highlights+tutorial

I hope that helps. :)

Title: Re: Redfire's Attempts At Mediocracy

I actually think the reds are different enough, honestly. The costume has this lightness to it, provided by the white highlights. I would think about changing the whiteness of the highlights to a more saturated, but perhaps a tiny touch pinker or oranger colour. That's my personal preference though.

I do want to ask, how are you doing lines? That is the seams on the boots and gloves, and the others here and there. The ones connecting neck piece to head seem to have both light and dark, giving a more 3 dimensional appearance, but for most of them you just use dark lines. Adding the highlight lines as well as the shadows makes things pop a lot more.

Final thing, the logo is a bit clunky looking to me. Again, wondering what you used to make it. Or it could just be size of skin or something. The lines just look sort of messy.

Still, it's a good first time. Better than mine, for sure. You'll pick up more as you go. I really like what you did with the face here. That stands out quite well. Keep at 'er, man.

Wow, quite impressive for a first skin, man!  I'm not really terribly familiar with the character, but you did a great job on the face.  Good work, and I look forward to seeing even more impressive things from you!

For a first skin this shows real potential. You should really work on some more, I'd love to see you evolve.

I agree, really nice for a first skin. I like the face a lot. Have you thought about skoping on the extra pieces, like the shoulder pads and collar? That might bring a little more individuality to the character.

Ok, it's up on my Yahoo Group. And I have no idead how to skope. I tried to learn and my eyes glazed over. Oh there is two skins in the release, my basic one and one taking the advice to add extra highlights.

Ok guys, what do you think of this?

My attempt at skinning Anti-Venom onto the always useful Parasite_ren. To be honest, I'd be completely happy with the mesh if I could add the claws from Venom_TJ onto it, just to finish the look.
Title: Re: Redfire's Attempts At Mediocracy
Post by: Podmark on November 07, 2009, 09:11:16 PM
Adding the claws shouldn't be too hard. I could probably do it for you.
I'd dial back on whatever texture you're using on the body, it's a little too much I think.
Title: Re: Redfire's Attempts At Mediocracy
Post by: deano_ue on November 07, 2009, 09:35:24 PM
the texture is so forceful. lower the opacity it should be there but shouldn't distract from the other details of the skin

Ok, I don't know how to change opacity guys (or even what it is, lol) but I hope this is what you meant.

what program are you using, if you make sure each element of the skin is on a separate layer you can work with them without messing with the other elements

I use Photoshop. I pretty much suck at effects and can never get my head around the motr complicated aspects of skin design, layers and high-lighting. Though admittedly my current low levels of inteligence may be due to having just watched 14 episodes of THE SUPER HERO SQUAD in a row :P

Well that's just not healthy for anyone.

It looks like you're using the texturizer there. When you open it there should be some settings, you want to play with them to get a lighter effect.

Your second picture is an improvement but it could probably go down even lower.

I think when I take it lower it loses its prescnece. But I'll try and see what works best.

I don't mind, take as long as you think you need.

EDIT
Does anyone have any tips for skinning dreadlocks? I'm working on Doctor voodoo but I can't get the dreads to work, they either form into a circle on the top of the head or go off at odd angles.

OK, I've uploaded my new Doctor Voodoo skin (for Area34's amazing new mesh) in my YahooGroup. The only thats not working is the lightmap, which for some reason I can't get to work.
Title: Re: Dat Voodoo dat he do
Post by: area34 on November 11, 2009, 05:57:30 PM
The lightmaping isn't the issue. I didn't include the refl and glow tga's to the wireframe (which I probably should have and will add now). Once you include those, your skin works fine. By the way it only needs the male_basic_lightmap I didn't give each piece it's own omni since it didn't really need em.

Not that I'm critiqueing or telling you how to do your skin but if I were to skin the gauntlets I would use a gradient and a low level'd refl to give it a golden shine.

This is the extras.tga I was using when I skoped it (ignore the sash that's not my work, I didn't do that or the skulls but it's a good ref)
Title: Re: Dat Voodoo dat he do
Post by: area34 on November 12, 2009, 03:10:43 AM
Here you go... I took your stuff and some of mine- moved it around to match up better (I tweeked some of the colors to). The sash and stuff are still my bashed tga but it gives you an example of what I was talking about.
After you asked about the how to do the dreds I decided to give it shot too. The wireframe is confusing so in the end I just created a square of fake fro and repeated across the whole thing. Then I inverted color to two stripes to be white.

Oh yeah I also am going to have to update the nif. After looking at your skin I noticed a clipping issue in the wrist and as you can see in my pic I fixed it.

Title: Re: Dat Voodoo dat he do
Post by: area34 on November 13, 2009, 01:06:02 AM
I can send you the tga's from that if you want it.  You can see how I moved around your shrunken heads to make them line up on the staff better and how I did the dreds(they're not perfect but I wasn't going to spend anymore time lining up the stripe).

And if you haven't already you should download the skope again, I fixed the clipping gauntlet and uploaded the update earlier.

Ah Thanks, I just re-downloaded it.

OK guys, I took a pole at my local comic shop (her name was Bearta, lovely women, doesnt speak english :P) over what character I should try doing next.
These were their results in ascending order:-
5. M.O.D.O.K.
4. Killer Moth
3. Hellstorm
2. Necrosha Blink (which is already 80% done)
And their most wanted character is......

SHE RULK!!!!!

God help me, I don't know where to start. lol. I may need some help along the line with a skope, but by Buhda I WILL NOT FAIL!!!!

EDIT
OK guys, I'm having some trouble skinning her bair feet. Can anone reccomend any skins that have bair feet I could use as referance?
Also, is anyone interested in skoping She-Rulk? "T'would be a most buxom endevour".
Title: Re: She-Rulk WIP

This is what I have so far.

I really think a dedicated mesh (with a skoped breast-belt) would really help. Something with a sai melee animation and a B.A. machine gun. I haven't figured out how to do the hair stripes yet either.
Oh, and I was thinking, do people prefer bair footed meshes just to have the toes skinned on or do you prefer a properly meshed foot and toes (like ren's Hulks)?
Title: Re: She-Rulk WIP
Post by: area34 on November 16, 2009, 12:57:47 AM
I would say the easiest way to do the hair stripes and still retain the original texture (if you use adobe) is lasso the area you want stripped then invert(black would become white) then hue to the red you want otherwise i would do layer on top and airbrush the stripes.
Title: Re: She-Rulk WIP
Post by: AfghanAnt on November 16, 2009, 01:34:30 AM
Nice start. As for the Breast belt, just skin on the strap and add a buckle to the front.

Did you ever finish Brother Voodoo?
Title: Re: She-Rulk WIP
Post by: Podmark on November 16, 2009, 04:40:28 AM
Are you using Tomato's new Amazon mesh? If not I suggest you do, I believe the chest mapping is pretty decent on that. And I'd suggest some skoping for the weapons, and a collar, maybe different hair.

That going to be a tricky one, glad you're giving it a try.

I haven't forgotten you're Anti-Venom skope, I'm busy but I'll get to it soon. If someone else can do it faster then go for it.

Actually I'm not sure if Brother Voodoo is done. The rar pack hasn't been updated since the original post so I know it still has things that need to be fixed (to many lighmap.tga's and such) and I was going to send him the files for this-

(It's my Kittbash example of the skope for my yahoo group, it uses his skin and I lined things up a better and did some tweaks- and it still has a couple KB'ed parts I was using when I made the skope).

So he could finish his up with some of the things like the dreds stripe and skulls/heads fixed among other things I did but I've not been around this weekend. If he's done with his or just wants to move on to Shrulkie I guess I could go through and redo all KB's parts of my skope (but I suck at faces) if he's ok with it.

What sort of hammer do you need? Doesn't he have access to a range of hammers and weapons in the Ultimate Universe? I'm sorry, I'm not following the new Ultimates. The only old Ultimate Thor mesh I know of, where we can get that style hammer, was done by Fusion, so is off limits for skoping. I can do the other stuff, if no one else steps up. I'll just add the standard Mjolnir. Heck, I'll do it anyway and you can decide if it's good enough.

Ok, my friend, here's the New Ultimate Thor skope. Thanks for the reference pic. It helped out immensely. I'm sorry if it seems like I hijacked your request for a skope of the Ares mesh, but I just felt that a skope of a Thor mesh was more appropriate. I know the main reason for the choice of Ares was for the melee animations, but the fact that they are primarily left handed didn't seem to fit Thor, either (plus there's a few flipping animations, which I've never seen Thor attempt). I am working on transferring the animations to this skope, though, so I don't make you too mad at me.
Please, let me know if you want anything added or removed. I know that, sometimes, it's better off just skinning the beard on, but I wanted to give you the option of having  a beard piece. Also, I know the bootcuffs are probably going to look better skinned on.

Thanks, Murs. I was going to try to do the head transfer thing (using Gren's Odin or even male_heavy_hair_beard) to get a more quality bearded look, but it was just too much for my meager skills.
I just realized that I forgot to skope his moustache.

Title: Re: Ultimate Spider-Woman WIP, Ultimate Thor soon.....
Post by: hoss20 on May 18, 2010, 03:50:48 PM
I was going to add the moustache and do a little work on the bootcuffs. The big problem with the cuffs is that if you put any type of texture or even two colors on the skin, it shows up on the skin in gridlines. I figured you'd want more detail, so I want to put a piece on there that you can texture properly. I was just about to do it, so if you can give me a few minutes (ok, probably longer), I'll preview it as quickly as I can.
P.S. I am REALLY glad you're happy with it.

I added the moustache and replaced the bootcuffs. Much improved, I think. If it meets with your approval, Ghazkul, I'll send it along.

I like the skin. The mesh parts could be moved to another easily. I just could not think of any other mesh with a hunch but grens ghoul. I think the weed parts could probably be arranged a little better. I got lazy towards the end.

Hey its a good mesh! My thoughts were that mybe moving trhe pieces onto Gren's Sasquatch (Toybiz did the same thig with their figures, putting a new head on their Sasquatch toy to make the Man-Thing) or Irrational's Shurale mesh would give bot the clawed hands, shaggy look and I could then skin on the weedy textures. How does that sound?

Hey, does anyone have some male_heavy copatible keyframes that are closer to the Man-Thing's movements? Like a sluggish, ape-like walk, slow, clumsy atacks and the burning touch? I tried usind the Parasite keyframes, but they're non-compatible.
Title: Re: Whatever knows fear......

Bearded's Frankenstein keyframes, maybe? I have some Male Basic type I've converted to FFv3R, so they must exist for FF1 (I probably have them on a CD in a box... someplace).
Title: Re: Whatever knows fear......
Post by: ghazkul on September 16, 2010, 04:40:56 PM
You know, the Frankenstien Keyframes are perfect, except they distort the arms too much! They go too short and fat and the hand floats around off the arm. Anyone think it would be possible to alter the keyframes? Literally everything else about them is perfect for Manny!

If this is male_heavy based then no male_basic keys will work. Well, I mean, they will, but they will distort.
But yes, there ARE male_basic zombie keys, and they are pretty much the Frankenstein keys with a bite attack.

Not that I could tell you where they are, sorry.

Thanks guys, using the skeleton KF's for the oment, they actually help the mesh look more "Man-thingy" (it's a word).
SO, because i love his mesh so much, I've started skiing Grn's Iron Man Mark32. It's only started, so the base skin is still 80% there until I reskin the male_basic portion, but the helmet and extras are reskinned almost. Any opinions so far welcome.

Tthanks for all your kind comments!
To be honest I enjoy doing the newer costumes because I know that better skinners haven't tackled them yet and I can work on them without comparing them to another's work. if I knew how to skope meshes (and believe me, I've tried to learn and failed) i would tackle so many more! I would do a mesha and skin for the new Hobgoblin, She-carnage and WAR Machine!

In all honesty my dream has always been to do skins and meshes for Kamen Riders, lol, I love Kamen Rider KIVA and Double(W) and I think they would be great to use in FFVTTR!

Volsung did two Kamen Riders, to my knowledge. Or maybe it was one with two skins. But I had them and loves them.

I kind of dig this guy. Who Is Venom makes me think he is a non-powered masked mystery man. The skin looks sort of neo-pulpish in a 2099 sort of way, which I realize doesn't make a lick of sense but that's what I got out of it. Are they using this in comics?

I agree with skinning people other skinners haven't bothered with. In fact... maybe try your own designs. I'm a big proponent of original characters.

You may be missing a tga file or two. Open the Spider-Man character.nif with NifSkope, click on the webs, click on NiTriShape and then on NiTexturingProperty. This should give you a list of tga's that you should have.
