Title: Playing original Freedom Force on Vista
Post by: juggygales on January 09, 2009, 03:00:03 AM
Hi,

I'm trying to play  :ff: on Windows Vista - and an error message pops up that this version of windows cannot support Freedom Force and then shuts down the program. I downloaded the FF V1.3 patch, but I believe this only allows you to play on Windows XP. Is there anything I can do or download that might help me to play FF on Vista?

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

when i installed it, i installed the 1.3, and the game ran fine. have you tried altering the compatibility settings to run in WXP SP 2?

Just out of curiosity, how is this done? I would love to play FF1 again, but it won't run on my Vista. Thanks.

I have Vista and the 1.3 patch and it runs fine without it being in compatability mode. The problem I do have is the console won't come up when I hit the tilde. I can bring up the fps screen hitting the U key though. Any thoughts?

Do you have a U.S. standard keyboard?

Have you changed your init.py file, as per the Game FAQ (http://freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php?topic=49868.msg680027#msg680027)? If you have and it still isn't working, post your init.py (use the code tags (http://home.graffiti.net/stumpyanker:graffiti.net/images/BBCodeTagButton.gif)) and maybe we can sort it.

Yes, standard US keyboard. My init.py file is:

import ff
ff.CAM_MIN_ZOOM = -1000.0
ff.CAM_MAX_ZOOM = 3000.0
ff.INPUT_EXCLUSIVEKEYBOARD = 0
ff.CAM_JITTER_FREQ = 1
ff.APP_DEBUGMODE = 1
ff.RENDER_ENABLESCREENSHOTS = 1
ff.CON_ENABLE = 1
ff.APP_ENABLE_XTRACHARS = 1

Also I've tried the zoom option in here and the min won't go any farther than normal but the max works great for some reason. Thanks for your help.

Hmm. Your init.py looks okay. I don't know what the issue is with the min zoom level. I have mine set to -350. It could be that there is a lower limit the game will accept... I am assuming that the other options are taking effect.

I'm not sure what's going on with the console. I don't recall if people running Vista have had trouble getting the console to open using the back-tick (`) key or not.

Are there any errors near the top of your ff.log file, before any RPGA attribute errors? If so, post them (maybe the first 10 or so lines of your ff.log).

I don't see any errors other than a hero marker not located in mission.dat file.

I also have FF1 installed in vista 64-bit with 1.3 patch and no problems.

I believe i do windows XP sp2 compatbility setting and run as administrator just out of habbit incase there was issues.

usually i try to run with out compatibility settings first and then with if it doesnt run or crashes without settings but older games i just tend to use them anyway just incase.
