QuoteMs Knightley, currently featuring in the film The Duchess and star of the Hollywood hit Atonement, is said to be in negotiations to play the role of Zelda Sayre, one of the most controversial literary figures of her time.
Some claim that Ms Sayre's marriage to Scott Fitzgerald, the author of The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night, inspired him to produce the Jazz Age's best novels, while other say she stifled his creativity.
Their troubled relationship is set to be examined in a new biopic called The Beautiful and the Damned.
The couple were married in 1920 and were seen as the perfect society couple.
But some experts suggest that Ms Sayre's behaviour and schizophrenia led Scott Fitzgerald into fits of jealousy and alcoholism.
The film is written by Hanna Weg, who also wrote Enigma, and directed by Nick Cassavetes.
It is to begin shooting in April, although the role of Scott Fitzgerald has not yet been cast.
