I know there are fans, so let's discuss...
Today's comic:
I vas wondering about him... (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20101018)
On the character in question (spoiler):
Spoiler
While I don't think Higgs is a typical Jager, he's certainly got some kind of physical link to them. What, exactly, I don't know. He's very old and knows the castle pretty well and remembers some of the older more "eccentric" inhabitants so... is it possible he's some kind of proto-jager?
BTW: have you guys seen the art reveal about Zeetha's dad? It's outside the comic and the page is down now (durn) but there are refs in the wiki.
Higgs is definitely more than he seems to be, but the question of what and how remains to be seen.
I have a couple of theories:
Spoiler
1. A couple of times, it has been mentioned that the Heterodyne heir was male. Agatha is obviously not male, though indisputably a Heterodyne. It makes me wonder about why there's some confusion over this. One possibility is that this was deliberate misinformation to throw enemies off the trail. Another possibility is that there are really two Heterodyne heirs... and maybe Higgs is one of them, but not a spark. I don't have anything other than sheer speculation to base that on.
2. We know that the Baron and Lucrezia had an affair. Higgs' features do somewhat resemble the Baron...
One way or the other, I do suspect we'll find out how much more dangerous he really is. Zola really picked the wrong crew to mess with, even if she is turning out to be more formidable than she first appeared to be. If Zeetha survives, I suspect there will be a rematch some time down the road.
Glad to see this thread here, especially since I usually avoid forums dedicated to webcomics I read- usually too many people completely missing the point of the latest installment, or focusing entirely on the least interesting (to me) aspects...
Spoiler
Well, Higg's pronunciation of "was" certainly indicates a Jager connection. As for the gender of the Heterodyne heir, I've been wondering about that for a while. I suspect it may have something to do with Lucrezia's long-term plans requiring a female genetic child, but beyond that, there are several possibilities I can think of.
At this point, I'm wondering if
Spoiler
Zeetha is a) dead, b)dead, but revivable, or c) just very badly wounded. I'm hoping for b) or c)...
I'm hoping for "c" myself Alaric.
Spoiler
The way Zeetha was taken out was almost embarrassing. I'm going to blame it on happy-pollen dulling her to make myself feel better.
I'm pretty sure she's not dead-dead because the revelation of her father Klaus hasn't been revealed in the comic, only in a leaked bit of artwork that I think has since gone "poof". To have her dead and miss that reveal just doesn't make good narrative sense.
Viking... I mean BlueBard...
Spoiler
The only info we have on the male heir was he died young (though I can't remember if they said how young) and that this information is kept pretty hush-hush prior to everyone recently descending on the castle. That being misinformation might be possible, but even so, I don't think Higgs is an heir - there's something inherently "servile" about him (his interaction with Tarvek earlier when the castle was running amok in the Muse's body if I recall correctly) And remember, he is old enough to remember Igneous Heterodyne (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20100419), who sounds like he predates the Heterodyne boys.
(like how the heck did I mis-attribute the comment like that? Viking hadn't even posted yet? Psychic flash? nah.)
I had not known there were any such art reveals about Zeetha's dad, GG. Up until now, I had only ever accessed the website for the comic, and hadn't thought to look in other places for news and previews about Girl Genius.
And on the character in question (spoiler):
Spoiler
I love how his speech only betrays a slight smidgen of an accent. I can almost envision a situation where the author says, "Aw, crud! The guy inking the strip made a mistake on the lettering for a single lousy W, and now everybody thinks he's a freaking Jager! Hey, wait... that's actually pretty cool. I can work with that!"
Of course, as you note, plenty of background information is already set that screams that he is Jager-ish. (Like that wonderful background briefing of the assorted injuries he sustained in carrying out his duties.) I wonder if he's the Jager equivalent of covert ops, with strategic surgery to make him look more like an ordinary human.
Yeah, Viking, I kind of think that too. After all, Vole nor Jenka look less like "standard" Jaegers than anyone except the generals. In the GG newsgroup human/Jaeger hybrids have been considered. I wonder...
Plus, he healed up from massive trauma in just a couple of days.
After today's strip, I *needed* a thread to converse in.
Spoiler
OMFG, he's a f-ing Jäger!?!!! Totally didn't see that coming. For the last few months, I'd been thinking he was the *real* Wulfenbach son, in seriously deep cover, and Gil was just some random (maybe not-so-random) spark he'd adopted early on. But I think the jäger thing makes more sense now.

Preferentially, I'm hoping for C, as well...
Spoiler
I get the feeling that revivification in the Girl Genius universe usually has... lasting side effects... Still, B would be better than A.
Spoiler
As for how she got taken out so quickly, I'd say the movit#11 (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20101013) had a lot to do with that- especially combined with the fact that Zeetha, good as she is, has shown a tendency to at times underestimate others... But, yeah, they're all still under the influence of the plants, as well.[/url]
I'm pretty sure you meant to address that last part to BlueBard, rather than Viking.
Have some more to say, but first, I think we need to establish some rules about spoilers. Can we assume that people reading this thread are already Girl Genius readers, and restrict the use of "spiler" tags to very recent things some people may not have had a chance to read yet, or should we continue "spoiler"-ing most of what we say?
QuoteI'm pretty sure you meant to address that last part to BlueBard, rather than Viking.
Whoops! Fixed.
As to spoilers, yeah I think anything older than a week or two should be considered spoiler-safe. Sound good?
Fascinating stuff guys. I really love this series, and I have to say, I haven't thought about the possibilities that y'all have mentioned. I had been thinking that:
Spoiler
Higgs was one of the Heterodynes returned. No one knows what happened to them. He has always reminded me of the taller one...Bill? Anyway, I imagine that is very unlikely, but the current hint of him being a Jaeger...I hadn't even considered it. Awesome.
Also, Zeetha shows up in a future episode. Perhaps a little Jaeger transfusion will help her.
GG, I'm looking at the strip you referenced and I think you might be reading too much into what Higgs said there.
He didn't say that he, personally, remembered Igneous Heterodyne. He was simply reminding the Castle/Muse of an event that happened. We don't really know how he knows this, but it's definitely more knowledge than a simple airship sailor ought to know.
What else do we know about Higgs?
- He is not a pilot or navigator, but was still able to set course for Mechanicsburg in an airship.
- He apparently survived an attack by DuPree while trying to save the Baron's life, twice, and managed to beat her.
- He sustained massive injuries while trying to get the Baron to safety.
- He is next seen at Mama Gnika's, where Gil was healed of serious injuries with Jager Battledrought.
- Gil drafts him into carrying 'The Hat'.
- He single-handedly defeats the Castle/Muse, while demonstrating some understanding of it's construction.
- The Castle/Muse recognizes Higgs somehow
- Higgs demonstrates some knowledge of the Castle layout, claiming he saw a map.
- Higgs and Zeetha start to bond, a little
I don't think he's a Jager. It doesn't quite add up. What it does add up to, I'm not sure.
I don't think he's 100% Jager, but there are definitely Jagerishness in him. According to this comic (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20091102), a Heterodyne drank from the Dyne and got very Jager-like. Later Vlad Heterodyne (I'm assuming the surname) came up with the Jagerdraught and pretty much anything that got long term exposure to the Dyne started getting all tough and toothy.
Also, some factoids from the author's 2008 San Diego Comics con panel. (http://sweetpea-grubb.livejournal.com/224419.html) (at the end after the masquerade pics)
Quote4) When someone becomes a Jäger the only thing that changes about them is their appearance. They still have human genetics so when a Jäger reproduces, his offspring will be 100% human.
5) Ages! The generals are somewhere between 600-700 years old, Dimo is about 300, and Oggie and Maxim are around 250-300. Maxim is the youngest of the three. Phil has the exact ages written down somewhere but he couldn't remember off the top of his head.
7) Only the very best & strongest soldiers were chosen to become Jagers.
So if you survive the Jagerization, you can live a very long time, and if you were selected, you had already proved you were one of the best, which could mean lots of training or if you survived the process, plenty of time to learn new things.
I missed that hint. Interesting.
Pinky's gonna be black and blue by the time Higgs gets done with her...
Yeah, even though she got a hit on him, she's taking the worst of this fight. At this point, I wouldn't be that surprised if the a) dies (especially when the Moveit wears off) or b) ends up with permanent damage.
I wonder how bad Higgs' wound is.
EDIT: Scratch that "dies" bit. I forgot she's got a piece of the Other in her head. We're probably not done with that plot point yet.
Now I wonder how many "Others" are out there. We know of at least three I think, could there be more?
Quote from: Glitch Girl on October 20, 2010, 01:45:55 PM
Now I wonder how many "Others" are out there. We know of at least three I think, could there be more?
Well, if any of them wear dark suits and shades, and make a menacing reference to "Mr. Anderson," that would probably be a dead giveaway... Oh, wait. I'm thinking of The Matrix movies. But the Other's ability to replicate her consciousness in multiple entities is reminding me of Mr. Smith, for some odd reason.
In any event, I'm completely expecting (or at least fervently hoping) that Pinky survives with some severe humiliation. Her usefulness as a plot point has not fully played out yet:
Spoiler
Since it's established that she's had the training to be able to seal away the Other's consciousness, and rifle through her memories on a whim, I suspect that could start a plot thread whereby Agatha could receive similar training. Because I'm really ready for Agatha's battle of wills with her mother to finish up and move on.
Higgs' wound is nothing. He's probably had worse from shaving.
Aaaaaannnd... we cut away from the action. Argh.
You know, even though it's only been a few hours, maybe days for our heroes, it's been about three YEARS for us viewers since Agatha entered the castle. Wow.

You've got to admit, though... Team Foglio is keeping us hooked.
As of today, volume 11 begins.
"Nom nom..." heh heh heh.
And hey, we're back to the action!
I also chuckled at the "Nom Nom" noises. Do you think that iconic munching sound was originated by Cookie Monster, or does it go back farther than that? Because truly, few things could make me smile like Cookie Monster's enthusiastic "OMM NOMM NOMM NOMM!!!" noises.
I'd considered Higgs to be a sophisticated construct like Punch and Judy or Von Pinn, but the Jagersomething hypothesis has some merit.
So Agatha and Lola have the Other, who/what/where is the third?
When Von Pinn gets mad she gets Jaegerteeth; perhaps there is a variation of the Jaegerbrau given to some constructs (or built in) that makes them look fairly innocuous most of the time. But if they get angry, well, to paraphrase someone, you wouldn't like them when they're angry.
Head of the Intelligence Division sounds better and better all the time.

Prince Tarvek of Sturmhalten had a robotic "sister," whose consciousness was replaced with that of the Other. Being a robotic construct, she also outfitted her vocal projectors to be able to mimic Agatha Heterodyne's voice, which prompts a Pavlovian-like obedience in most of the populace of Sturmhalten.
Eh. GG responded more succinctly and quickly than I could.
Today's strip... Ouch? (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20101027)
Spoiler
I'm really not sure how to read this. It could either be "Oh yeah, I just took a horrible wound, I should be showing signs I'm in pain, right?" or "Okay, I've never met anyone who could hurt me this bad, this is a new experience. I may be in trouble". Thoughts?
Sorry Viking. Timing is everything. :)
My guess is ...
Spoiler
that Zola is going to put Higgs down (as in unconscious and severely wounded) after taking a good deal of abuse herself. If anybody on Agatha's side dies here, my bet is on Violetta. I think she's next on Zola's dance card, as the players work to delay Zola long enough for Agatha to reach the Castle library and try to restore the Castle's consciousness.
Beyond that, there are so many threads hanging that it's hard to say what will happen next. Gil and Tarvek will want to stop Zola, of course, and Zola's fixation on Gil should give him an edge. Don't forget that Othar Trygvassen is still loose in the Castle somewhere and may put in an appearance. On top of that, the Baron is likely to attack the Castle soon.
Please remember that he is The Unstoppable Higgs.

Please remember that he is The Unstoppable Higgs.
I remember he had to be patched up the last time he took this much abuse. Impalement will ruin most people's day. Not that he won't recover, but he's not going to be the one who takes Zola down.
I dunno... I have a growing feeling that Higgs is this universe's equivalent of Chuck Norris.
Higgs does not take damage from being impaled by a sword. The sword takes damage from impaling Higgs. And then probably apologizes afterwards.
The only way Higgs could possibly be more unstoppable would be if he had a beard, so that one could joke: There is no chin behind Higgs' beard. There is only another fist.
Someone mentioned that he might be Bill Heterodyne. I don't think so, but...
...what if he is A Hetrerodyne? Some younger brother exiled (voluntarily) when the older brother came into posession of Der Castle. But before he left, he took a good sized swig of The Dyne. After recovering, he took off and has been hiding for... years. He is not in the line of succession, so he isn't an heir, but he is still a member of the family.
From what I understand, the authors have stated Higgs is not Bill or his brother, beyond that, who knows?
As for today's comic...
Spoiler
Looks like Higgs' injuries did finally catch up with him, but Zola is about to go up like a Spinal Tap drummer. Go Violetta! There's a reason I like her. :)
Whatever happens next, I think this fight is almost over. I have a feeling that Gil is going to finally cut his way out shortly after the dust clears and say something to the effect of "did I miss anything?" as he looks over the aftermath
Props to those who accurately forecast elements of today's comic.
Spoiler
And props to Violetta for showing that a fight isn't necessarily won through the greatest application of sheer power, but often through bringing the right kind of power to the right point.
And though my predictions are obviously suspect, I'd be surprised if this is the end of Zola. It somehow would seem fitting if she needs to be rescued from combustion by Gil.
And I must say - what with the various webcomics that easily fall behind schedule, it never ceases to amaze me how the Foglios manage to continue producing such a wonderfully-colored, drawn, and narrated strip like clockwork, three times a week.

Awesome. The Bogey man checks his closet for Higgs at night.
Anyway, very interesting stuff so far. I'm waiting for Gil to get his rear-end out of that stupid plant. He's one of my favorite characters, so I want him to get back into the story!
I actually have a more serious theory about Higgs:
Spoiler
Maybe his ability to sense pain has somehow been shut off. Pain is the body's normal means of saying, "Stop doing that! That's just going to damage you more!" Not feeling pain means you can ignore those warnings and keep pushing your body well beyond physical norms, right up until your body simply shuts down due to catastrophic failure. So, if he doesn't feel pain, that would account for his "Ouch?" statement, followed by his faceplant. Sort of like realizing, "Oh, dear. That hit one of my vital organs. This could be problematic."

With mad science, I wouldn't be surprised if they used an engine powered by solar energy panels that caught sunbeams harvested from cucumbers. And that would be the

OMG! She crushed his...
Spoiler
...hat!
You don't mess with a Jager's hat! (Or Higg's (whatever he is) hat for that matter. ;) )
I really like Violetta's slight-of-hand tricks. They are always fun. I'm not sure what part of the plant that was she swapped the sword for, but at least it was squishy. Of course, now Zola's in an incoherent hyperstate, and Higgs is going after her by himself, despite injury. Methinks Higg's ain't thinkin' straight (but at least he's trying to make sure Zeetha survives). My gut tells me she's going to get away because of this.
On the plus side, it looks like Zeetha is finally going to get some medical attention. I guess non-professional medical attention is better than nothing.
Today's Comic (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20101117)
"Wheeeee!!!!"
I so want one of those now. :)
Also, don't those two make a cute couple?
(A couple of what I'm not sure, but they are cute together)
This just goes to show...
Comic strip episodes dedicated to library research don't make for good commentary. Give me a giant cat-robot-juggernaut ride any day.
So, uh... which two make for the cute couple? I'll confess - I don't even remember the names of the on-panel characters at this point.
Weeelll... actually I was referring to Sleipnir & Theo (left), but it works for Moloch and Snaug as well (especially the aside) :)
And here I was thinking you might have been referencing the forbidden love between one of the Dingbots and the cat juggernaut. :)
They're uploading VonPinn's mind into THAT (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20101119)?
Oh, my.
The phrase that occurs to me is...
Spoiler
Franken-Thundercat
I can't wait until Zola gets to play with the kitty.
What is it with mad scientists and this kind of thing?
For obvious reasons, I am reminded of two quotes that almost, but not quite, fit...
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Are you saying that I put an abnormal brain into a seven and a half foot long, fifty-four inch wide GORILLA?
-Young Frankenstein
and
Donovan: Dr. Slate, next time you consider downloading the Little Engine That Could into a weapon of mass destruction...don't.
-the Big Guy & Rusty the Boy Robot
Personally, I think Von Pinn's going to be horrified to find herself in a far less scary body.
I wonder if this will stop any of the Jagers from pursuing her so vigorously. Or if this will simply add to the attraction.
ah DuMed... are you going to "live" up to your name? I hope not, I like him.
Well, no matter what happens, I think I can safely say that this is not going to end well form someone.
"Call this a cast iron stomach? I don't! This is Zinc!" hee
DuMed is family. Agatha won't like him being... crushed.
"Let's try to think like a diabolical, paranoid, amoral megalomaniac... Where would you put it {Tarvek}?"
[giggles].
On the downside, I kinda hope they start consolidating all these characters soon. All this constantly skipping around is starting to get tiresome.
And isn't Gil still inside the plant?
Clearly, this plant consumes its food at the Speed of Plot.
Off-topic: Which actually reminds me that my community theater group recently finished a run of Little Shop of Horrors. I played most of the bit parts and walk-on roles.

Well, since the main idea in today's strip is that VonPinn's mind gets transferred into the dangerous clank, that's probably a safe bet. But one of the more entertaining outcomes might involve multiple mind switcheroos as a result of the experiment going wrong. Probably not, but it's fun to imagine.

Well, we know there's a prophesy connecting the Storm King's heirs to the Heterodynes. We know that at some point in the future Agatha's going to be involved in time traveling. I've been wondering if that's somehow connected to all the Muses and Storm King stuff.
I did have a list of the original mythical muses. I need to look for it and see if it has any connection to the most recent revelation.

That's what I call a cliffhanger.
Speaking of which, what do you want to bet that's the last official comic in the story arc this year and we cut to another mini-story? Or will they set up some more cliffhanger scenes first?
She's so much happier in her new body...
Indeed. Though no one is going to recognize her at the next Muses reunion. ;)
(BTW: congrats on post #8,000 Alaric)
So I was wrong... that wasn't going to be a cliffhanger.
I do like Otilia's last line, though.

"Who would like to go next?"
I've got to say, it's probably a good thing that VonZinzer was the first one up. After that, they would have had a hard time getting him in the saddle.
Oh, it was a cliffhanger. Just a speedily resolved one.
And Otila definitely makes for an entertaining Muse. I don't think the other Muses that we've seen thus far have had nearly such vibrant personalities. I can only imagine what she was like in her original body.
quotes reconstructed from memory:
Spoiler
"While this body still pales in comparison to the works of van Rijn, I find this vessel... acceptable."
"Heh. Tricky. But I think I now have the hang of it. Who would like to go next?" That's like asking who wants to ride the catapult next after seeing the first volunteer splattered into the wall just a foot away from the window. Mathematically, it makes perfect sense that it should work now, but...
Okay, maybe it's just me, but I'm ready for Zola to die already. This "Haha I'm back and now I'm going to kill you all even though I'll probably fail again" is starting to get old.
When she was first introduced, I thought a suitable fate for "Pinky" would be that she be installed in Der Kestle as the "official" Heterodyne, always under the watchful eye of a general or two, some Jaegers, and, of course, Der Kestel. That way Agatha would be free to go out adventuring whenever she wanted.
Now, I, too, am ready for her to be eliminated as a problem.
I've long been past being ready for Lucrezia to get out of Agatha's head.
Well, Zola's probably going to be around for a little while longer at least, but I am enjoying the current takedown. The panel that is the third from the end is particularly enjoyable.
Spoiler
The book entitled "Using Found Objects As Weapons," making a lovely "TOME!" sound as it clocks Zola, is a fun "look closely" joke that is used enough not to be overdone in Girl Genius. And of course, it's always satisfying to see Higgs make an entrance in the last panel.
I'm not sure Zola is going to get 'eliminated'. She might return as a recurring guest psychopath.
As I have commented in the past, Girl Genius tends to advance the plot slightly faster than a glacier. This should be no surprise to anybody. But the art and the humor are usually worth it. Given the number of loose ends, I don't expect a conclusion to the Castle storyline anytime soon.
The smooth-running schedule of updates also helps mitigate slow plot issues. But as a plot device, Zola seems to have fallen to recycling old tricks. So I'm ready for her to be neutralized, and quickly. Or if not quickly, then in a thoroughly satisfying Conga Line of Humiliation.

I was going to say something like, lower-left panel FTW! It's got violence, punnage, and irony all in such a small space. Brilliant!

I like the Conga Line of Humiliation idea.
"Next!"
Well, today's artwork doesn't advance the storyline, but it's quite cute nevertheless. I like Gil's expression - I imagine him thinking, "I wish this wasn't just a wishful dream on my part!"
Mark my words... that artwork is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's too compelling not to give them ideas. Won't be anytime in the near future, of course.

I certainly hope so. I like Gil WAY better than the Storm loser.
I have heard from friends that also follow the series that Gil was originally intended to be much more evil and unlikable, which became unnecessary when it was discovered that the Storm King dude was filling that role nicely. (Not sure what their source was, but it certainly was an amusing theory.)
I remember reading something about Gil being originally more Evil and mellowing.
I prefer him to Tarvek, who's motives I still don't trust all the way. He's got more sides than a zocchihedron.

I don't even know where Lou hangs out these days; the old bulding I knew by the railroad is gone...
I don't trust Tarvek either, but he is a good aggravation for Gil.
Thoughts on today's comic:
Right. I had forgotten that Pinky was hopped up on Speed Of Plot Juice. Side effects may include arbitrarily stretching the length of plot along at the author's whim. I suppose I could hope that the last panel heralds her downfall. But I'd entertained similar hopes after the last panel of the last action strip as well.
And for some wishful dialogue-scripting on my part...
Spoiler
Zola: I'm going to win! Me! Me me me meeeeeeee!!!
Agatha: Sorry, Pinky - the name of this webcomic is Girl Genius, not Girl Blowhard!
Zola: ACK! CURSE YOU AND YOUR UNHOLY ALLIANCE WITH THE AUTHOR!

Heh, that made me laugh. I like your version. :)
Looks like my prediction of last time was on the mark - the authors were pulling another instance of "Maybe THIS will finally stop her... Er, no. No, it won't."
Best panel of this strip (for me, at least) is once again the lower left corner:
Spoiler
The flight suit has a "Dry Clean Only" tag, and is hung over a spot labeled as "Dangerous But Amusing," or somesuch. Fitting, given the references to King so-and-so the Incandescent, and how this must be the (presumably) improved Mark II version of the flight suit.
I wonder if the next strip will finally pull a reversal of Zola's fortunes. We're not being teased by something that might stop her in the last panel, so we're breaking that chain of activity. Plus there's the literary rule that the third time's a charm. I'm not sure whether to expect that the Movit 11 is still going to play a role - the past strips made a couple of references to how that quantity of the substance should cause the subject to have a spectactularly nasty crash, but Zola seems to be dismissing it utterly.
Today's comic (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20110112)
3 things
1) For some reason, I LOVE panel four. :D
2) spoiler...
Spoiler
Okay, how many of you have seen those Coyote/Roadrunner cartoons where Wille E. has some kind of flying device (usually a balloon) and some kind of ballast (usually an anvil) and he wants to rise slowly higher so he drops the ballast...
...only he doesn't rise SLOWLY?
Maybe my misspent youth involved too many cartoons, but I'm predicting that in the next comic for some reason. Agatha will be fine but Zola?
AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
If I'm right, we may finally be rid of Pinky in a nicely comical way (yay!) that gives her a viable way to return to menace again (boo!)
3) Today (the 12th) the day to buy the new novel if you want to see if they can get the book onto the Amazon best ranking for Kaja's birthday or what have you.
http://www.girlgeniusbooks.com/
Still debating on this one for myself, but am sharing anyway.
Well, last comic DID show the flight suit as being kept in the area marked "Dangerous But Amusing"...
Well, today's comic finally provides some satisfaction. Of course, standard webcomic plot rules suggest that things won't naturally resolve the way that Tarvek claims they will.
In Girl Genius, nothing ever seamlessly flows from the end of one comic panel to the start of another, in the same logical direction. There's almost inevitably a sudden reversal.
I guess we'll see what happens on Wednesday...
Well I guess the drug is finally wearing off.
Today's comic (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20110119)
YAY! Look who's back! FINALLY!
Too bad he had to interrupt but at least someone's out of the picture for a while (I hope)
Finally, indeed. It reminds me of one of the much older strips when the authors added a small panel of Gil beneath the actual strip with the altered dialogue of "GRAAAAAH! Am I even
in this comic any more?"
Some thoughts:
Spoiler
So Gil saves Zola. Again. I think I had predicted something like this would eventually happen - that karma has been well established. I really think Zola needs to survive to at least serve as a plot device so that Agatha can learn to better deal with the Other's presence in her mind.
Speaking of which, did Agatha's pendant get ripped off again about two comic strips ago? Or did she just get stabbed with an implement that was roughly the same shape?
So it seems that the Movit 11 drug will wear off without any spectacularly lethal withdrawal effects. Annoying to have expectations set up in one way, only to be casually discarded.
I wonder if there's any reason the Castle would choose not to maintain air superiority at this point in time. I certainly remember how enthusiastically the Castle was able to kill people in the sky for its Lady, after all. And an unconscious enemy without any hostage shield would be a tempting target, indeed...
Viking:
Dare to dream, huh. :)
But I do agree, I think she's going to be necessary in the long term.
And to answer statement #2, implement roughly the same size and shape. Actually I think it was one of her hair decorations. Go back a few pages and you can track when it disappears.

Probably, except the Castle is probably still "booting up". Can't have the Castle at full strength too soon... remember the Baron is still waiting in the wings.
Lots of loose threads...
Zeetha, Othar Trygvassen, Otilia, the "love triangle", etc., etc...
I find today's strip to be further proof that Zola can travel at the Speed of Plot.
Spoiler
Last strip, the Castle is happily offering to take down Zola, apparently using magnetic fields to throw all manner of kitchen hardware at her. (Including a cheese grater, which I loved.) A few panels into today's strip, and Zola is out of range.
I do hope it doesn't take too long for Gil to explain why he needs Zola alive. I mean, I have suspicions, but it would be nice to have the official explanation.
Up until Zola absorbed "Auntie" Lucrezia's memories, it is pretty likely that someone else was pulling her strings. Maybe Gil wants to find out who. Maybe Gil already suspects who and that who is worse than Zola. Zola would have been the best link back to whoever is ultimately responsible.
In her present state Zola intends to run the show herself, if she can. While Zola was obviously prepared to co-opt Lucrezia's memories, I can't see how it could have been part of the original plan. Now that she does have this incredible resource to draw from, I doubt she could ever again be content to be second-fiddle. Duped, maybe.
Besides, Gil isn't anywhere near as bloodthirsty or vindictive as Tarvek is capable of. I don't think Agatha would be on board with murdering her, either. They'd kill Zola if they were forced to, but it wouldn't be option #1. Hence, Gil stopped Tarvek from doing her in.
And thus, Zola lives on to be a future plot device. Amazing how he got free at just the right moment.
Today's strip takes us to some of the action happening outside of the Castle. I find that quite refreshing.
Me too. Plus, it's good to see one of the classic mad science tropes here. :D
And for the record, I think the guy in question is from a while back.
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20071121
Oh, I completely agree. Same moustache, and Gil clearly had ordered taking the commander's head after the battle for memory scanning. But actually reviving the head in a jar was an amusing, pleasant surprise.
Dear me. I just said that reanimating a dead head in a jar was an amusing, pleasant surprise. I'm not sure that's a good thing.
It's not a good thing.
It's an AWESOME thing.
One of us, one of us... ;)
C'mon Glitchie, all us here are Sparks. Just look at some of the meshes, skins, and scopes.
Unfortunately, we are probably only up to the level of the members of Master Payne's Circus of Adventure.
I'd say that I need to have my head examined, except I don't want it to end up separated from my body and preserved in a glass jar.
I must say - today's strip (and Wednesday's) shows a wonderful insight into how availability of revivification technology has affected the psyche of people. Ordinarily, I would imagine that someone waking up from death to discover that they're a head in a jar would prompt severe psychological trauma, or at least denial. Whereas this fellow seems to be accepting things with nothing more than an indignant "Come on! How am I supposed to SHAVE?"
Or perhaps it's simply the case that this man has been revived before.
And I love the doctor's bedside manner. Provided that I never have to be his patient. I mean, sure - he undoubtedly provides the absolute best medical care available. But if I were in such a bad condition as to require his care, my political situation would be so bad that I'd be pretty much screwed anyway.
Haha, yeah, I am also enjoying this bit. I really like the doctor. :)
Well, it seems that our jar-headed patient is finding death to be quite the liberating experience. Fast transition, that.
I dunno, maybe "Reanimated Abominations of Science" get all the ladies?
Spoiler
Today's Strip (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20110207)
So, not only is Pinky/Lucretia going to be at the hospital, but so is Robo-Lucretia. I wonder how they'll get along. I suspect like a house on fire - you know, lots of screaming and destruction.
And since Pinky's in bad shape, I wonder if she's going to be fitted for any replacement parts? I'm REALLY hoping so.
BTW: isn't the baron still at the hospital or did he leave and I forgot?
I suspect that "Reanimated Abominations of Science" don't get ALL the ladies, since there's apparently one lady in particular that this particular candidate would rather do without...
Spoiler
Tough to say whether the Baron is still present. I'm sure that in Dr. Sun's opinion, he bloody well should be. But the Baron has shown himself to be rather assertive about his independence of movement. Especially since Gil has presumably dropped off his radar. And there's that whole plot thread about the Baron mustering forces to demolish the Castle while it's inoperable.
I'm mildly confused as to why Robo-Lucretia is at the medical facility. Metalwork and engineering aren't skills I'd normally expect in hospitals. I mean, granted, it IS a world of Mad Science and cyborg implants, but there comes a point where you'd think fully-robotic patients would belong in a separate wing or something.
I feel a mild sense of schadenfreude at Pinky having been shot out of the skies. Pity it didn't happen onscreen.
I'm also hoping that Lucretia's various copies don't share a hive-mind intelligence. Because robo-Lucretia shouldn't realize that the Baron got hit with a slaver wasp, or that Pinky has a subjugated copy of Lucretia in her own head. Though the copy in Pinky's head should be aware of robo-Lucretia...
On RASs and the ladies...
QuoteDr. Frederick Frankenstein: For the experiment to be a success, all of the body parts must be enlarged.
Inga: In other vords: his veins, his feet, his hands, his organs vould all have to be increased in size.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Exactly.
Inga: He vould have an enormous schwanzstucker.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: That goes without saying.
Inga: Voof.
Igor: He's going to be very popular.
:D
Spoiler
Missing Pinky getting shot down makes me sad. Seeing the shape she's in afterwords may make up for that though, depending on the damage.
Robo-Lucretia might be there because Tarvek was there earlier for his wounds (before he escaped... how many days ago? My sense of time in this thing is really off).
Somehow I doubt that all the Lucretia copies have a "hive mind". This means RL might even think that Agatha/Lucretia is still active because I don't think she was there when Agatha regained control (I should check when I get home) RL shouldn't know about Pinky/Lucretia unless PL decides to reveal it and THAT might be interesting.
Question for you guys... how much in-comic time has past since Agatha entered the castle (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20071226) and now (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20110207)?
Two days, maybe three... less than a week. The sun was either rising or setting when she left The Chapel of Bones, I think.
All this time and only one little nap...
And today's comic reminds us that clowns are scary.
No wonder that family grew up so screwed up.
I'm not quite sure I understand what an impluvium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impluvium) has to do with a giant jack-in-the-box.
I'm thinking maybe the Folgios meant "basement" and were referring to where our intrepid heroes are now instead of what they're fighting... possibly?
Oh heck, I got nothin'.
And in today's strip, I am now shaking my head that Gil was so easily emotionally manipulated.
Quote from: Viking on February 11, 2011, 01:36:42 PM
And in today's strip, I am now shaking my head that Gil was so easily emotionally manipulated.
It's really not that surprising. Gil has almost always been portrayed as very emotional and he's never been all that manipulative himself. I can see him being especially sensitive to anything where Agatha and Tarvek is concerned. Because of his history with both of them, they get under his skin.
Gil is honest and straightforward, for the most part. He is able to lie and deceive when he has to, but it's not really his nature. He tends to be more trusting than Tarvek is and he's not a backstabber.
Whereas Tarvek is a schemer from the word 'go'. He does have his heroic side, but I think that's mostly Agatha's influence on him. Naturally he's going to be trying to make Gil look bad, but he's going to be sneaky about it.
Besides, I see it for what it is... a humorous plot device to maintain the personal tension between Gil and Agatha. Everybody reading knows they're pretty much a couple... it's just not been realized in the comic itself.
And Violetta's back, I've missed her so! :)
I'm really looking forward to Gil and Agatha ditching the Storm Loser. He's entertaining and all, but I like Gil way better. On the topic of today's strip, I LOVE the name of the poison....and the constant abuse Violetta's heeped on Tarvek.
Well, again, until Gil comes right out and declares his true love for Agatha - TO Agatha - Tarvek is a semi-necessary humorous plot complication. To the best of my recollection, while Gil has confessed that he loves her he hasn't done so when Agatha was actually present.
Why on earth the obvious rivalry with Tarvek has not prompted him to do that, except for the fact their lives have been in constant danger, I can't imagine. Gil doesn't strike me as the shy type.
One guess is that particular revelation is waiting for some point when the Baron is involved and threatening Agatha's life. If anybody can push Gil over the edge, it's probably him.
Of course the other factor is that they need to pair Tarvek off with somebody besides Agatha, unless he gets bumped off somewhere along the way. Hm. Maybe he and Zola deserve each other.
Is it just me, or does today's strip seem kind of.....jumpy? Almost like there's a panel or two that are missing. I found it a little harder to follow smoothly than normal, and I'm pretty used to some of the more subtle visuals in lieu of text that Phil uses at times.
Entertaining background scenery in today's strip:
Spoiler
They look like Mad Scientist vending machines. "You can never have enough monsters!" "In a rush? Instant Minion!" And, of course, the Brains machine, which helpfully labeled offerings like "smart" and "foolish" to fit any needs of Mad Science. Makes me wonder what the life of a Mad Science vendor is like.
And it's nice to see that even the Castle can get panicked.
This Monday's strip...
I was hoping for more permanent damage (though there's still a recovery process to go through), but I did get the expected meeting of the mental "twins".
But is it Lucrezia in control, or is it Zola?
Now, of cvourse, either Robo-Lu or Zola-Lu could be The Other that goes back in time and wrecks the castle, or...

But is it Lucrezia in control, or is it Zola?
Judging from the "Curse this wretched, weak body" bit, I'm guessing it's Lucrezia. The trauma/shock/chemical withdrawal probably gave her the opportunity to gain control. Whether she'll be able to keep control, I have no idea.
Man, Gilgamesh totally kicks backside. Today he finally got his inning against Vole, and it was awesome.
"Who's the scariest monster?!"
You know, I hope one of these days they actually get out of that castle. It's been how many years since they got there?
There are complaints about that being aired in the Yahoo group. I wouldn't mind a little more advancement of the plot, myself.
Yay!

'bout darn time...
It would be really funny if Otilia was referring, not to the Storm King, but to Krosp- after all, she is currently in a feline body, more or less...
(Note- I don't actually think that's what going on, just that it would be funny.)
What if....
Because of the way the sparky families interacted over the years Gil and Tarvek were BOTH decendents of The Storm King, and EITHER ONE could lay claim to the title?
Or... if DuMedd was? That might also make Agatha The Storm Queen...

Uh oh, the jaggers heard the proclamation too. This is not going to go well for the wulfenbach fleet, although once their Gil takes over they'll probably be helping agatha anyway.
It's all fun and games until somebody loses their hat...
Not that anybody's lost a hat yet, but the presence of any Jaeger reminds me of their standard maxim, "Any plan where you lose your hat is a bad plan." And in the upcoming chaos, I suspect that many hats may be lost.
"We also like the crushing part!"
Lots of good little aside bits in this one.

Last Friday's comic. Two words.
"Your Highness"?
Was Klaus planning on turning the empire into a "legitimate" monarchy, royalty and all?
Or is it just possible that Gil is heir to another throne? I get the impression that he isn't the son of Klaus and Lucrezia, so who is his mother?
Another heir to the throne of the Storm King, maybe? That would make things between him and Tarvek rather interesting, to say the least. If they were half-brothers, that would be hilarious.
Actually the authors have already spoiled this
Spoiler
He is Zetha's brother and therefore the son and heir of the queen of whatever kingdom she is from.

I'm not too sure any of those panels showed Jager children... Jagers come in all shapes and sizes, and Mamma Gkika has been drawn as one of the taller ones (at least lately). In comparison with her, the others might just be rather short. Also, Phil Foglio is not above drawing a panel for dramatic effect and not worrying too much about consistency.
Not, of course, that Jagers would have any problem with Jager children running into harm's way if there are such things as Jager children.
But they explained the origin of the Jagers in a previous volume... Jagermonsters (http://girlgenius.wikia.com/wiki/J%C3%A4germonster) are created by a special potion, the Jagerbrau (http://girlgenius.wikia.com/wiki/J%C3%A4gerbr%C3%A4u), which was given to the Heterodynes' most trusted soldiers. I believe other sources have shown that Jagers can have human descendants. So I don't think Jager children are likely.
Whether or not you think they are likely, they do, in fact, appear and are identified as such by the other Jagers. I was surprised too, knowing their origins, but the Jagers in this page (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20121119) are clearly referred to as "keeds" and their appearance backs that up.

In context, I assumed that Gnika was referring to Agatha and Tarvek as the "keeds" (she's looking at them, not down at her feet at the short Jagers) and wondering why they aren't getting out of the path of the Bloater Tanks. Her own group seemed to be moving to engage the tanks (they're on their way to meet them). That's how I took it, anyway. It could be interpreted either way, couldn't it?
Since this is the only instance so far where Jager kids might be appearing, and in the face of what we've already been told about the Jagers, I think I'd tend to wait and see whether they make a reappearance before I'd say they definitely are children.
If they were Jager children, I'd think that Gnika would already know what they were doing since they're with her. So why would she ask the Jagers around her what they were doing, when it's Agatha and Tarvek's group that she's running into?
Again, Phil Foglio isn't above throwing things in for dramatic effect and not worrying overmuch about consistency, so they could just as easily be Jager children or short Jagers. I admit either possibility.
Yep, that page is definitely referring to Agatha and co., Cat.
Maybe I ought to look at it a fourth time, because I honestly couldn't see it that way. Could be right, I suppose.
Thematically, it seemed to me that Foglio was using the short Jagers to make Gnika more prominent while at the same time preserving the idea that she's surrounded by fiendish-looking monsters and that the two groups are meeting in the street.
By herself, she's just a Jager hauling around a big cannon, and the air of menace she'd project wouldn't be as great. If she were surrounded by equally large Jagers, it would diminish her and her cannon and they'd get more lost in the panel.
By shortening the Jagers around her (and we're assuming they're Jagers and not some other Heterodyne monsters resident in Mechanicsburg), Foglio gets to make Gnika look more menacing and preserves enough real estate in the panel so that her group and Agatha's don't look crowded in. Granted, they look more like militant imps than Jagers, but they're still monsters.
That's kind of why I assume that they aren't Jager children. Basically, IMO Foglio "cheated" to get the illustration he wanted. Mind you, I think he's probably about the best comedic illustrator out there and that nobody's better at what he does.
Trust me. I'm an English teacher. ^_^
Mamma can change her color, maybe she can change he size too.
Pym particles are kinda sparky, after all...
Re: the last couple of pages
Is there a comparable shot of what Castle Heterodyne looked like before this past week's strips? I don't rightly recall some of the towers leaning at odd angles.
There is the shot of the whole town of Mehcanicsburgh 'way back when the heroes were first entering the city just after entering the gate. der Kestle is siting on top of a hill/mountain... Think it's a double-page spread. At least one tower is laying on the ground, and there is a river or something (The Dyne?) pouring out of the side.
Okay, we get it, Castle Heterodyne is demolishing the Baron's troops. How many weeks is this gonna take?
'Cause you know the Baron has got to have some surprises left. And what's going on with Gil and Agatha while all of this is unfolding (slowly)?
If this is a cliffhanger, the guy doing the hanging must be G.I. Jager with a Kung-Fu Grip(TM).

Gahh!! I want to know what's going on!!
There used to be a "Polygnostic Radio Theater" or something like that you could download an episode or two. This isupposed to be the graphic representation of one of the adventures (I think there were two of them).
Well, we're back to another long, drawn out storyline with no resolution in sight... If I wasn't so fond of Agatha's character and Foglio's artwork, I'd be tempted to stop following it.

But, I loved this line:
"...Perhaps who you are may be somewhat important..."
The mysterious lady is beginning to realize she's gone from the frying pan into the fire...
You obvioulsy never had to follow a Marvel comic storyline in the '60s. It was good practice...

Eh, I read "Looking for Group". Those guys could teach Foglio lessons in long, drawn-out storylines...
Never read that one.
Still, I'm not really dissagreeing with you.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again...
Every story is better when you throw in a Jaeger.
I won't spoil it, go look:

Two years?! This storyline is going to drag out another two years?!
On the plus side...
Spoiler
Castle Heterodyne isn't going to kill Gil. Still.
Annnd... anything that scares the Castle everybody else ought to be really worried about.
Is it just me, or is the figurehead on of the boats from yesterday's strip a What's New dragon? Not that I'm complaining, mind you.
Yeah, the second one looks like Growlf (if that was his name).
Bill, still waiting on issue #2 of D'Arc Tangent...
I just realized, we haven't seen the wasp eater in over two months, right before they opened the vault with
Spoiler
the Storm King
.
Being as they're now in rather skimpy outfits, with nowhere for it to hide, does that mean Agatha has somehow been freed from that bond? I don't think Phil would make an oops for that long.
Today's strip, in two words: Heterodyne ham.

The mind boggles...
Where's a geister dammen translator when ya need one?
Yeah, it would help if we had some subtitles.
Years back, someone translated their speech, but it was guesswork.
I know there were a couple times that Kaja translated the jaeger speech, but that's at least readable as-is.
Yesterday's strip has a special guest appearance by Sigmund the Sea Monster!
I saw that. Before that was Sam Starfall, a Blue Meanie, and maybe The Bride of Frankenstein, Yu Go Oh, and Elseworlds Aquaman and Meara.
Ah! I saw the trident, but didn't look much further. I must have been in a bit of a hurry when I read that one. That's definitely the Bride, still in her wrappings. And we both missed Hellboy in the panel with the blue meanie.
I'm a member of the Girl Genius Yahoo Group, and that was one of he first things anyone pointed out.
There is a guy (or two) in the lawst panel from Wednesday's cartoon who is probably someone. There is a small critter hanging on his leg saying things.
Yeah, I saw that critter, but the appearance and what he was saying didn't seem familiar, so I figured it was referencing something I didn't know. (I can't know *all* the content....and I probably wouldn't want to)
I feel like I should know who the dark, crow-looking person in that panel is, but it's not coming to mind.
The Girl Genius cartoon for 1-17-17 is the story of my life...

So, the Sharktooth story is over, but I'm not quite sure of the significance of the last panel.
Spoiler
That sure looks like Hadrian Greenclaw's hat. Is it special somehow? I mean, it's a nice hat, but it's not a *very* nice hat.
I thought that too. I wonder if Sharktooth was a Greenclaw before he drank the Jagerdraught...
We know Augie had a life before being a Jager; he had kids.
re: today's strip
Is this the first time we've seen Dupree's throat? Is that just a "regular" scar, or is she somewhat Jaeger-ish?
I hadn't thought about that; she usually wears a turtleneck. Someone on another discussion group was wondering if that smoke knight (or master assassin or whatever) was the one to cut her that bad. Maybe she "lost her head" once upon a time, or someone slit her throat. I bet that really made her mad
Any insights as to what past event is being referenced in today's strip? I really do wish Phil would include the old * note boxes from comic books of yore.
Maybe when she, Gil, and Tarvek were dying and they had to all be wired into a machine to resurrect. Or whatever. That's what I thought of. Let's face it, the whole story goes back decades now.
For those who haven't given up yet, Krosp returns. He calls Agatha "Food Lady", and she scolds him, to which he answers it's been like three years. Agatha says it's been like three weeks.
Krosp was last seen in May 2015...
ah, so it *wasn't* just cat attitude at play. I might need a reminder where he's supposed to be a monarch of.
And I was disappointed when it was Krosp who got off the ship. I totally expected it to be all of Agatha's little clanks. I wonder if the writer for Despicable Me got the idea of the minions from them.
I was hoping it was everybody: clanks, Jaegers, Adam and Lilith.... and Krosp and the bears.
Krosp is The King of Cats; the whole bit about him being the commander of the bears was a surprise.
I *knew* there was something much more to Higgins. I wonder if he's a construct like Punch & Judy. Probably not, though. Probably something else new & unique (to us).
My money is he is a Jager-General. He is not a lot like a Jagermonster, though, it's true. Perhaps he is a proto-Jager, a construct that was what they were using before they developed the process. Or... maybe he is the correct process; the one that made the Heterodynes such destructive monsters that still looked mostly human. Of course, if he is head of the Intelligence unit, looking like a "normal" would be to his advantage. Kind of the way Jenka dresses up and plays a part while gathering intelligence.
