Title: The good, the bad, and the ugly-More Tests...
Post by: daglob on January 31, 2015, 07:47:05 PM
I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is a particularly aggressive form, so much so that it has spread to the point that surgery is no longer an option. So they are going to try hormone therapy on it.

In 1998, they gave my father six months to two years to live, and decided to try the hormone therapy on him because who knows? It might do some good. He is in his fourth year "cancer free", so obviously the therapy works. I don't think I'm quite as far along as my father was, so I believe that I have a good chance. I've got some slight pain, and know that from my father's case, it will get worse before it gets better. I'll also never father another child (but check out my age; I have no business having a kid), and may have what are euphemistically called "intimacy issues", but, hey, dead people have those problems too, and they don't get to see sunsets, eat chocolate, read the next Doc Savage book, and play with their grandchild (or play Freedom Force), all things I have to look forward do.

What annoys me (other than the whole getting up four or five or ten times at night), is that they squirted chemicals into my veins, injected me with radioactive substances, put me in big machines and zapped me with weird energies, and I didn't develop even one super-power.

So sorry to hear this.  On the plus side a man who I knew at work (retired not dead) also had that therapy about 6 or 7 years ago.  So fingers crossed buddy.

And I have had several radioactive shots for scans of my back so I feel ya on the superpowers.  Don't even glow in the dark. :(

My thoughts are with you in this ordeal, Daglob. Still, while you might not realize it yet, you did develop superpowers, after all. And you're going to beat this supervillain!

Ohh my gosh, Daglob, I'm so sorry!  We will keep you in our prayers, my friend.  It sounds like you're ready to come out swinging, and that can make a huge difference in these types of situations.  One of my best friends fought a long battle with cancer, and he had a much better run than they predicted, largely, it seemed, because he was too stubborn to give in.  Please let me know if there is anything I can do.

I am very sorry to hear this, Da Glob. My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer a number of years ago, but they were able to catch it early enough and he was treated with a radioactive seed implanted into the cancerous area. Luckily, he's been clear of it since then. With all of the members of my family that have suffered from some form of cancer, I was unaware of hormone therapy. Obviously, it's more appropriate for some forms of cancer than others. As you mentioned, it has spread too much for surgery and radiation treatment, as well, I assume. What other course of treatment do they have scheduled to accompany the hormone therapy? Please, keep us posted and know that you can always come here for support, advice, or just to vent.

I'm sorry to hear about your current health problems Daglob. I'll be praying that the therapy will work for you. Till then be strong, try to stay positive and keep negative thoughts away.

Like what the others said. Don't give up. Even without superpowers, other heroes make up for it through hard work, courage ,persistence and knowledge. I've read that some men who follow a vegetarian diet or eat a lot of fruits and vegetables lowers their risk for it. There are a few other stuff you can read about online.

Anyway, hoping for the best.

Our prayers are with you, Daglob. It does sound like you have genetics working for you, from your dad's experience.

Maybe you'll develop super powers yet.  :)

I am sorry to hear this. My thoughts are with you, man.

On the superpowers, you may be two-thirds the way there. Lots of times it's radioactivity, chemicals, and a lightning bolt that finally does it. Don't give up when you are so close! ;-)

My father got diagnosed with prostate cancer about seven years ago (yay for genetics! Can't wait for those exams!) ... after undergoing radiation treatment, he doesn't even need to go in for regular check-ups now, still enjoys a few beers and leads an even more active lifestyle than before!

Modern medicine is amazing and the human body is surprisingly resilient!

Oh gosh, I've been so busy lately I haven't checked the main forum.  DaGlob, here's hoping that the therapy works for you as well as it did your dad, if not better.

And believe me, I know the feeling about the whole lack of powers thing: so far in my life I've been injected with strange chemicals, zapped with lasers, consumed radiation, and injected with electricity, and so far no notiicble powers.  My Glitch Aura has even seemed to have faded over time.  So disappointing.

Do we really want to contemplate the super powers one might develop while receiving radiation, chemicals and what not for prostate cancer?!

That being said, I am impressed with your attitude.  It is one of those intangible aspects that is so important to surviving and thriving through hardship.  It may or may not affect the outcome, but it certainly affects the journey.  If my meager medical expertise can ever be of benefit, do not hesitate to contact me.

Update:

The oncologist wants to do BOTH chemotherapy and hormone therapy. I was all ready for the hormone therapy (since I have my father as an example of it working), but I'm not really ready for the chemo (although it's another shot at super powers). It also involves surgery to put a port in (reminds me of the heartplugs in the movie version of "Dune"). The doctor swears that I won't get sick, which I'll believe when I DON'T end up sitting on the bathroom floor with my head in the toilet. I remember that anti-nausea medicine nauseated my mother.

All in all I can't say I'm enthusiastic, although the doctor seems convinced that he can get rid of the cancer. So I will go through with it.

If I lose my hair I'll probably end up looking like either Uncle Fester or Dr. Evil. I'm not sure which would be better or worse.

Well, having the doctor being encouraging about the process is huge.  That's really great, actually.  I'm sorry that chemo is back on the menu, as that is never exactly fun, but I hope it will be low-impact and, most importantly, effective!

Keep your spirits up, man.  Even iff the process is painful, the reward is still sweet....though, of course, a cure AND super powers would be sweeter.  UY's point about the source might be well taken, on the other hand... :)

In my experience, the Docs are VERY stingy with the powers anyway.
A doctor thinking he can get rid of a cancer is HUGE my man.  That gives it a pretty good shot.
The chemo sucks, but has improved over what it used to be.

(And you DO have at least one super-power.  The mystical ability to create 3 dimensional constructs of obscure characters from history.) ^_^

Did they say what kind of dosage of Chemo?  If they're doing both therapies, it might be the lower dose, which means less sick feeling, though be prepared for many things tasting like yuck.  Spicy foods tend to cut through that, though you might be a bit more sensitive to some spice.

My minor issues have given me that, for some reason dairy tastes really strange. I am not lactose intolerant, milk just tastes very weird. Ice cream seems fine, but homemade brownies were weird.
When I was stuck in bed, especially after weird drugs I did some Zen and the art of FF, did some mental meshing. Just remember how much we appreciate you here. I don't know how you feel about it, but we have all known each other for so long, it is like an extended family.

Still, it wasn't as bad as a kidney stone...

I don't know if you've already been told this, but when my mother and sister-in-law had chemo, they usually felt decent for a couple of days and then things hit them. I think this is usually a pretty standard reaction. I hope you get through things okay.

Okay, so I can't work the second week after chemo, either.

I decided to apply for disability since I can't work one week out of three. I'll hear something in 30-60 days.

My hair is coming out, and my finger and toe nails hurt (doctor says I'll probably lose them). My skin is all dried out and feels tight and rough. I could hope that it will split open and a superior being will emerge chrysalis-like from within, but I would probably look more like The Fly from the movie with Jeff Goldblum.

On the good side, I've lost five pounds...

Still losing hair, finger and toenails don't hurt as much, but meat tastes... indescribable. I've worked in paper mills that didn't smell as bad as some stuff tastes.

Coffee and chocolate ice cream are fine, though...

While I can still taster the stuff in my mouth, most everything else seems to be tasting alright. Something a little "funny" about some things, but pickles and meat now taste like pickles and meat (respectively). Some of my hair is growing back, and I didn't lose my finger and toenails, although my feet are peeling like a sunburn. No pain, it's just weird.

on the positive side, the cancer doctor told me today that he believes the cancer is in remission. While it's not gone, it's not growing, either.

As with many things in life (a big belly, reality TV, etc.), that often the best outcome one is likely to get. ;-)

Kidding aside, this is awesome news, daglob! Congratulations and here's hoping for at least 100 years of continued remission.  :D

Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly: Bleah...
Post by: daglob on June 26, 2015, 06:29:53 PM
I've had to increase the dosage of my pain medication. I expected this, but still... The main problem is that it nearly knocks me out for awhile after I take it, so I will have to plan things "in between" doses. It may mean that I'll have to quit work (since I can't drive when the room is spinning all funny), and if the police stop me I won't be able to explain things because I sound like Crazy Guggenheim (If you remember him... ). My present occupation is file clerk for the Mobile Municipal Court, meaning that I get to sort and file traffic tickets. I'd hate to see one with my name on it...

Hopefully the pain will subside after my next treatment (July 6).

Is Short or Long Term Disability a possibility for you? You will clearly have all of the necessary documentation needed for approval. You could combine this FMLA (to keep your job while you're out, if necessary). I guess I should have read back a bit in the thread to see if you had discussed this already.
Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly: Bleah...
Post by: daglob on June 27, 2015, 07:05:20 PM
Actually, I've been awarded regular disability; apparently stage 4 cancer is grounds for that. I'm trying to keep working mainly because I don't want to quit. It's a part time minimum wage job, but it's mine.

To confuse things, I woke up this morning with less pain than I've had in a week. I was able to take the milder pain medication, finish some stuff for Alex, and head out for some errands.

I'm ready for this cancer stuff to be over with, and get back to my life.
Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly: Bleah...
Post by: hoss20 on June 27, 2015, 08:23:11 PM
Well, I know that if you're on regular disability, there's a limit on the amount of money you can make for yourself; so I guess the part-time, minimum wage job kind of fits the bill. I also know how important it is for anyone dealing with a severe illness to maintain some portion of a "normal" life, so I'm glad to hear that you're still working.

Well, PSA stands at less than 0.1 (which is good), and the doctor doesn't think the pain has anything to do with the cancer. his opinion: old age  :banghead:

And he doesn't want to see me for three months (although this thing in my chest will still take monthly maintenance).

So, they thought my foot was broken. Seems as though metastatic cancer will make your bones break easily. Upon reading the x-ray, they decided that it wasn't  broken, it was  arthritic. The difference is that with arthritis, you get  anti-inflamatories, with broken cancerous bones you get RADIATION.

Well, there's always the PET scan...

Man, that stinks Daglob, but I would imagine that arthritis might be easier to manage than brittle bones.  And who knows, perhaps the anti-inflammatories will interact with the chemicals and radiation you've already been exposed to and be the key x-factor for superpowers!

Had a MRI and another bone scan. The Radiologist was bored and pulled up my previous bone scan, and commented that the one he was running looked a lot better than the last one.

However, even after drinking some really heinous glop, getting radioactive gunk injected into my veins, and being bombarded by strange energies AGAIN, I show no evidence of super powers. I mean, I don't even glow in the dark, for crissakes.

Monday I get the results of the blood work and the MRI.

Nah... it's just what else am I gonna do when the car is broken down  and I can't get to work?

The results of he MRI say that the cancer is inactive, which doesn't mean it's gone, but may be on the way out. PSA is still less than 0.1, and according to the bone scan, less bone is affected than was six months ago. The neuropathy pain in my feet SHOULD be temporary, the pain in my joints may all be arthritis .

Not as well as I could two years ago. And it's not that I'm getting old. The neuropathy means that I can't always feel the floor through the pain, and my footing isn't sure. Everything seem to hurt more the longer I walk or stand. Still, could be worse. Dead people don't hurt.

Being candid here sorry but day to day. I'm a hobbler and my pelvis doesn't work right anymore so most forms of exercise are lost to me, biking, treadmills and so on. Since my body is open I can't swim anymore either which sucks because that was my go to. However just daily stuff. Yard work, walking to the mail box instead of driving. Also martial arts and dancing are a great form of exercise as well good therapy. Anything other than sitting on it. Though in my case I need to put on as I'm turning into a piece of paper but the exercise still needs to be had lest I atrophy. Still good to know your fighting the good fight. Best of luck.

I thank all of you who have contributed to my life the past year. I might could have done it without you, but the experience would have been a LOT harder to endure.

Now, tonight I have a sleep study, brought on by the overnight stay at the hospital while suffering from a kidney stone. While hooked up to telemetry, it was discovered that my oxygen levels dropped during the night, and that I stopped breathing often. I've had one already, and the results are that I stop breathing or my breathing slows about 90 times an hour. Add to that the problem that my prostate is now a lump of scar tissue and does nothing for bladder control making me go to the restroom every hour, and it's no wonder I seemed to be tired a lot of the time.  Well, the urologist decided to try something similar to Flowmax, so Mother Nature leaves me along for as much as two hours (sometimes longer), an osteopath prescribed some anti-inflammatories, which cuts down on my arthritic pain, and now I may get a C-PAP machine.

I may come out of this better then I went into it.

Beware that they may end up rebuilding you completely. At the very least, play it safe and do a full backup of your memories, in case they end up replacing your brain too.

On a more serious note, I hope your health continues to improve as quickly as possible.

I have a C-Pap machine on order and should be ready the next few days, and the pulmonology tests showed no change. This was good news about the nodules in my lungs, bad news for the asthma. So, to that end they changed my long term asthma treatment and we shall see if that works. I've also started a series of shots to try and keep me from developing osteoporosis.

Who knows what will happen when I start getting REM sleep...

I feel alright with it. I'm still on disability, so I don't have to worry about making a living. I want to do SOMETHING until I'm really ready to retire. I keep getting better and better, although I still can't walk or stand for long, and "lifting 50 pounds" is out of the question. I also find that shuffling papers for four hours is exhausting.

Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly: At the cardiologist's...
Post by: daglob on March 18, 2016, 06:44:58 PM
Lots of trips to the doctor's recently. Cancer doctor still says I'm cancer free, pulmonologist says the new medication is helping, CPAP machine is a marvel of the age, and today I got sent to the cardiologist. The pulmonologist wants to be sure that my breathing difficulties are all asthma-related before they try to find an exercise regimen to help me lose some weight. No one wants me to drop dead of a heart attack in the middle of jumping jacks.

So, once again they shot radioactive gunk in my veins, zapped me in a big machine, and all I've got to show for it is a headache and a band aid. Fish still ignore me.

So this week he pulmonologist says that everything looks good. She and the cardiologist will sign off on a monitored exercise program. Now they just have to figure out how to phrase the prescription so that it is covered by insurance...

Now the problem is I may have laryngospasms. I though the apnea was bad...
Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly: The Pulmonologist says...

Well, the laryngospasms sound rather unpleasant, but that's great news about the pulmonologist report!  It's also good that they're working with you to make sure your insurance can cover the prescription.

Sorry to hear about the larynx problem. I hope it isn't causing you too much trouble with speech and breathing. Sometimes it seems like it's two steps forward and one step back. But, the pulmonary report sounds like improvement, overall.
Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly: Testing... testing...
Post by: daglob on May 05, 2016, 09:37:46 PM
So, the past week the back pain has been so bad that at times I couldn't walk, and my hands shook to the point I couldn't draw. The pain killers were fogging my brain when I wasn't knocked out. Now, as a side note, my legs had been forming blisters like my blood sugar was acting up, and the crickets in my head (tinnitus) were so loud that I had to turn up the TV.  A little research provided the information that the blood pressure medicine I was taking had several side effects, like severe back ache, tremors, tinnitus, and blisters. I'm not sure about the flatulence; I did, after all, fix a pot of red beans and rice...

So, I'm off that medicine, and they will try another., The doctor thinks my increasing blood pressure is caused by weight, but I can't exercise if I can't stand or walk AT ALL, so the exercise program is postponed.

On the other hand, they decided to re-check by spine, in case a vertebra has collapsed. You know the story by now: radioactive gunk, zappy machines, no powers.

I dunno; if someone could talk to cats, how would you tell since they would ignore you anyway?

Got a window unit to tide me over, I just gotta install it.

And, amusingly enough, the second blood pressure medicine caused the same side effects as the first. On to number 3...

Ohh man, DG, I feel your pain.  I grew up in Ocean Springs, so having no AC on the Coast in June is no laughing matter.  At least you're still in early June.  We had our AC go out (in Arkansas) in the middle of the hottest summer in ages a few years back.  That was a fun time.  Here's hoping that they can get it fixed soon!  Ohh, and that the storm misses you.  :)

This is getting monotonous...

My hands have started shaking, as kind of expected since the last two BP meds did that too. Supposedly, the worst effects will pass as my body adjusts to the meds.

But the window unit is in and it works. The cats don't like the growling monster in the window, but they have been sneaking in during the night to hide under the bed or computer table or in the closet to enjoy the cool.
Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly: Weird
Post by: daglob on July 10, 2016, 07:19:58 PM
The urologist who originally diagnosed the cancer says I shouldn't have a prostate anymore. It decided after the chemo it would leave. Actually, it was 99% cancerous, so when the chemo killed it, the body said "lets get rid of that thing".

And another thing. My mother died nearly five years ago; she went in the hospital for a minor problem and the whole thing spiraled out of control and she died. My brother, the executor of her estate, discovered that she had a paid-up policy on my father (since the '80s). In the '90s, she had the beneficiary changed from her to her estate. The insurance company is doing a lot of hemming and hawing, trying to make us meet requirements that have been met or are not applicable, but in the final analysis, unless they get extremely imaginative, they will have to pay. Now it's not a lot of money, although for the time it was bought it was decent. But now it would be enough to get the AC on this house replaced.

The woman has been gone for five years and she is still looking out for me.

A topical storm is mostly just rain, And more rain. And when that quits, you get more rain, and a little wind. My house is high enough, with nothing higher between me and the Gulf, so flooding isn't a problem.

I guess. It's just that where I live, there aren't tropical storms, hurricanes, or earthquakes, and barely any blizzards or tornadoes or anything else. My home's in the Twin Cities, which somehow manages to be shielded from most of the really bad sh*t that much of the rest of Minnesota gets, and while we do occasionally get them, it tends to only happen every few years if that. The worst we get most of the time are thunderstorms, and while a few of them can get a touch dicey, they don't tend to be on the level of tropical storms. Basically, anything we get that is really bad happens infrequently enough that it's impossible to actually get used to it all, so while a hurricane or a tropical storm or the like may be business as usual for most people, it's still kind of a horror story for us.

...tried to kill me too. It was just doing it sslloooooowwwly... I finally decided that all the symptoms were symptoms .Problem is, as I've said before, I have arthritis in my spine, borderline diabetes, tinnitus, problems with fluid retention (the cancer treatment), asthma, migraines, and I am getting older, so why would I notice a backache, blisters, ringing in my ears, swollen ankles, a cough, headaches, and "that tired feeling"? The shaking in my hands while not constant, was what really bothered me. I was stuttering when I typed or mouse-clicked, and had to work on drawings when he shaking was the mildest. The scary thing was watching how the light danced off the blade of a knife I was going to use to slice some cheese, and decided that I did not want to be holding that cheese at that time.

So, on the fourth blood pressure med.

SHEESH!

Man, blood pressure medication is really sort of a crap-shoot from what I understand (3rd hand).  Still, they'll get it right in time.  I hope that it is sooner rather than later!  I'm sorry you're having to deal with all of this, my friend, but as you said the other day, I'm glad you're here TO deal with it.  You're in my prayers every day.

They keep shifting Hermine's storm track farther and farther west. It is funny and sad to see the local weatherman saying "Well, it probably won't affect us much, the latest track is still a long way off, but it keeps moving westward all the time, so you should probably watch it, but don't worry." I don't know who he is trying to convince.

The coast along Gulf Shores and Dauphin Island is already flooding. And the thing is still a long way off.

I don't think this house has flood insurance. It's at elevation 185 with nothing higher between here and the Gulf. There is a wind damage policy, though.

We only got a little rain yesterday and a cool steady wind. There was some beach erosion, and the coastal flooding, but when it come down to it, we missed it all.

That's no fun. From what I understand you can have a typhoon any time of the year. Other than that, they are pretty much identical to a hurricane.

Although... I think our first hurricane was early this year,...

They 8can8 wind up with higher sustained winds then hurricanes (bigger area to grow the storms in the Pacific) but aside from that. not much different. Typhoons do have very erratic storm tracks. Okinawa hasn't been hit by one in more then a year but we keep getting brush by rain storms spun off by ones heading north.

DaHulk?

The really bad and ugly part of this is that I realize how much pain I've been in, and eventually I'll have to go back to it. I can understand why people get hooked on medications when faced with going back to how they felt. Add to that both my mother's and father's families are full of addictive personality types.

I'm screwed. Either way.

Although, they tracked my "essential tremor" (hidden by the way my hands shook from the bp meds) down to one of my medications, and I'm off it to see how much it really matters. I can still see a little shake, but the vibrations are gone. I mean, if they were supersonic and I could walk through walls, maybe, but they have just really been messing up my art.
Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly: WOOHOO! Steroids...
Post by: BentonGrey on September 29, 2016, 04:09:09 PM
Being able to vibrate yourself invisible could also be quite helpful.

Man, I'm sorry.  Addiction seems to run in my family too.  It does add another worry.

I'm glad to hear that they've made some progress with the tremors, though.  That's awesome.

Also, speaking of "DaBrick" and "DaHulk", didn't you make a skin for the Male_Hulking_Brute_Kirby mesh that was your avatar? Maybe I'm just crazy, but I seem to remember that

I did this kitbash years ago. Originally I gave The Glob Shape-Shift, and his shapes were Mr. Fantastic T,  pink and green versions of Adam West Batman, George Reeves Superman, Spiderman, and The Hulk (on one of the Sandman meshes). I can't remember who did the skin originally, but it was perfect for what I wanted after a little Photoshopping. I always intended to do my own, but after one upgrade on the computer Shape-Shift quit working (I don't have permission or something; I don't remember what the error message was), and I never went further.

There is another where I just slapped the skin I use on a Male Hulking mesh or something.

In all this, I have generally given you the bad and the ugly and tried to see the humor in it (if I couldn't see the humor in all this, I'd just sit in the corner and cry), but I want to say something about the good: my family. My brother and sister have given help emotionally and financially, never complaining about their older sibling. I can never repay them; I don't even know how to begin. And they did this while taking care of their own families. My aunt in Fort Walton has helped when she could (often by just being herself-the family knows what I mean) and my step mother (step mother #2; #1 was the Wicked Witch of the West, North, South and East) has given whatever help she could.

My daughter and her husband have helped me in way too numerous to mention. She has tried to be with me at every doctor's appointment, usually with questions that I hadn't thought of. She is also the one who decided to start researching my medications and discovered that they were trying to kill me. She has popped in here a few times to see what was going on when I didn't have access, and typed an answer or a comment for me. She has been a loving and caring daughter, and done everything she could for me. My son-in-law has let her (there are some who would not have), as well as helping to keep my grass mowed (Mobile has laws about keeping your grass cut) and any number of other physical tasks I've been too sick to do (this on top of having a real job he works very hard at).

And the best thing of all, my daughter has never, ever given me a tie for Father's Day; I get books and remote control robots and Swiss Army Pens and stuff.

All and all I could never have hoped to be this blessed.

Over the years I have received help, advice, and encouragement from just about everyone who has ever dropped by here. People have taught me stuff, give me pointers on how to do some things, and even did the work for me: Bearded posted some stuff for me when I was unable to access my Yahoo groups, and Cyber Burn, Hoss, Detourne_me, Dr. Challenger, Peerless, Yell0w Lantern, Zivon, Avalon, Herodad, Catman/Sick Alice, Tommyboy, Johnny Patches... the list of those who have made me meshes, scopes, and pieces goes on and on...

Those of us who hang around here enjoy the game and the way you can add things to it. We all want everyone else to have as much fun as we do, so everyone here is generous with their time and skills to make that happen.

And when one of us has trouble (y'know, like cancer), they will get encouragement, prayers, sympathy... whatever is needed.

The Good Part 2 is you guys.

Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly-Diet and Exercise
Post by: daglob on October 31, 2016, 06:14:50 PM
So, nine months later, I get into an exercise program. I couldn't go last week because I was contagious, but this week looks good.

And I'm on a diet. No bread/starches, no sugar, no salt, no caffeine. You know, all the things that make life worth living. Since the blood pressure meds all tried to kill me, I'm going to have to control it without them. Losing weight will be the key. It should also take some of the strain off my back.

Actually, the doctor said to cut way back on them. She said it would be easier to do it I made some allowances. So, I have a 2-cup coffee pot, and I make coffee on Saturday, then drink one cup and save the other one for Sunday. Today for lunch I will eat a sandwich. Yesterday, I used my Nuwave oven to air-fry some chicken (which worked this time, last time it was an epic fail) and roast some vegetables. I'm trying to find stuff with a lot of strong flavors (like kosher pickles,  giardiniera, sardines), and use lemon juice and malt vinegar on veggies instead of salt. I have lost 14 pounds in two weeks (of course, the flu may have helped).

I just saw this and have been reading and catching up...Im kind of upset at myself for being away so long..Yes Id pop on and off but not long enough to inquiry about anyone...
Id sometimes just come on to see the latest Releases and updates but we are people first with issues and real life problems I Myself took some time away for a Hiatus because of personal issues.
I also Found out Bearded has been sick as well...I can still remember a brother who used to be on here who passed away by his own hand and wont mention his name out of respect and feeling the sorrow in my heart because I wondered how many times he could have been reached out too.I don't know if it means anything and hopefully you can understand but you can only understand if you feel the same way..
But you guys are my friends..Its been 14 years...You guys have been my escape in my Midnight hours...Where I have been up feeding my Babies that are teenagers now..where I would go to get my mind off of my issues.. even now as I go through what I'm going through now..as brothers I have even Argued with some of you seen some of you argue with each other but in the end we have always been there for each each other through our Mutual love for what we do...I ask myself why are we so committed to this and its because these are the things and the dreams of our childhood and although time goes by and go through changes we are not willing to give that up because we may grow up but never have to grow old and If growing up means giving up on those dreams then I for one never want to grow up we should forever keep that child alive.
So we will forever be a bunch of 8 and 9 year olds in the Basements,Tree houses,Bedrooms under the Covers with a Flashlights reading our Comics books and captivated by the Superheroes that we Daydream about...
Something in us that must live on.
Long Live Freedom Force and long Live Freedom Reborn!!!!
THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT  YOU ALL HAVE GIVEN ME.

Y'all remember back at the beginning of summer when my AC when out, right? Well, now my heater has died. They are predicting temps in the low 30s tonight and upper 20s tomorrow night. Now, I have enough blankets, furry hot water bottles (cats), and space heaters for me to survive just fine, but keeping the pipes in the kitchen and on the outside of the house from freezing is a problem. A BIG problem. All the other stuff I've been through, and this one seems to be bothering me the most.

The first thing the heater guy said was "How old is this thing?" I had to call my brother to find out, and he said he didn't know for sure, but he thought it was 30 years old. In other words, no replacement parts are available. The money from the policy my mother had on my father will pay for all or most of it (depending on the outside AC unit), but work won't start 'til next week when it warms up.

Ohh man, DG, that stinks!  We just had a similar situation right before Thanksgiving.  I'm sorry man!  As CP says, you can keep pipes from freezing by running water through them.  You can also wrap some rags around your outside pipes to help matters.  Good luck, my friend!

We usually take some old towels and wrap 'em around the pipes outside my house. Works well enough for the pesky high-20 low-30 degree nights.

...and one to go.

I've used purpose-made Styrofoam boxes for years; they attach over the spigot and capture what heat escapes around the hole in the wall around the pipe, and has been enough (it seldom gets that cold around here). However, there needs to be a source of heat in the house.

Crosspots: I did get some smaller space heaters; the new heater should be installed next week, though, so a space heater that size wouldn't really be necessary except for one night (tonight).

However, I survived one night; it may not have gotten quite as cold as they said, although it is 60 degrees in the hall outside of the bedroom.

I didn't talk about this when it happened; December was very busy.

Last month, first time I used my debit card, it didn't go through. I checked the customer service department, which is automated, and it wouldn't give me a balance. I contacted a flesh and blood human, and was told to check with the issuing body (Social Security). 90 minutes on hold later, they told me they didn't do it. So it was back to CS, where every human sent me to a line that said "Your call is important to us. We are having a heavier than normal call load. Call back later [click]". After three hours total, I had finally convinced them I was not dead.

I'm serious: they though I was dead.

But I wasn't the only one. The real human I finally talked to said that someone had hacked their system, and accessed a lot of card numbers of people who were deceased. Somehow, I got on that list. She said, with an exasperated tone, that she had been straightening things out for people all day.

Hey, yeah, The Phantom Eyebrow!

I stand to lose 200G of comic books, a bunch of Champions stuff, a lot of stuff I intended to use for reference, all the pics of my granddaughter, and most of the custom filters, actions, patterns, and brushes I built in Photoshop. However, FF is on the other drive, most of the comics are out there on the net, and the pics of my granddaughter that my daughter doesn't have copies of do not number many. The Photoshop stuff and an assortment of programs (Nifscope, Blender, Terragen, Google Earth, etc.) will just take time to replace.
Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly-R.I.P. Hard Drive...

I'm assuming that the drive will either not spin up or the head has crashed and/or there are a large amount of bad/unreadable sectors.  If it just won't boot, it should be able to be hooked up to a working system as a slave drive, to pull off as much as is possible/practical.

If the drive won't spin up, I've heard an extreme tale that it could be caused by old lubricant in the bearings starting to seize up, and that warming the drive up (which loosens/softens the lubricant enough so that it will move) before attempting to start it can work for a limited period, primarily just to transfer files off of it.  Like I said, it's an extreme step, but for a drive that's otherwise a lost cause, there's not much to lose at that point.

My computer guy is pretty good; he didn't offer any hope, but I've known him for over 30 years, and he used to be my boss. If there is a way to get the data off, he will figure it out. He just doesn't want me to be disappointed if it is ruined.

The drive won't do anything; it just sits there.

I keep thinking that I'll stop posting in this thread, to some extent it is a little self-centered, but this is a real problem. As I've said, the cancer got in my bones, especially on the left side. It also seemed to concentrate in the joints that had a little arthritis in them, and now I have a lot of arthritis in them. Since the end of January, my left hip joint has been hurting. Constantly. All day long. All night long. And it is getting worse.

I am not sleeping well, so I'm tired all the time, and I have ruined several skins and scopes by making stupid mistakes (fortunately, I habitually back up stuff, so I didn't lose everything). I didn't do as much for the Mardi Gras Challenge as I intended, and didn't make a St. Patrick's Day nor an April Fool's Day Challenge, and haven't done anything for the Anniversary Challenge. I had intended to pull more stuff out of my Yahoo Groups and send to Alex, along with a DC Super-Skrull pack and maybe a couple of Marvel Lanterns (and now I've seen this picture by John Byrne of the FF in X-Men costumes I really like...), and I still have a bunch of obscure Gold and Silver-Age characters started...

I can barely put any weight on my leg, and limping along makes by back hurt. I still have all this Real Life ™ stuff to do (taking out the garbage and changing the cat litter today is going to be hell), and it wears me out. Looking back, I'm not sure chemo was this bad. I'm on pain meds, but if I take the good stuff, it knocks me out for a couple of hours, then for an hour after I wake up, I have no pain. I can't do that. I have an appointment with an osteopath, but the earliest I could get it is in two weeks.

I don't expect anyone to do anything, just want to complain some. I'd cuss if it would do any good.

Yeah man. Let 'er fly. As to the Arthritis, I have it in my back, (part of what my surgery was trying to fix), but prior to this - the pain management Dr. gave me a pill called Mobic. It's an anti-inflammatory, and if you can take it, it'll help with the arthritis. It's the only med that worked for the past couple of years. If not that, then maybe they can find something along those lines. Thoughts and prayers my friend.

Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly-Arthritis? No, meds.
Post by: daglob on April 01, 2017, 06:20:39 PM
At least, not completely.

I had to change my muscle relaxer (for leg cramps and back spasms) back in January because the insurance no longer paid for it, and my regular physician was not in. The doctor on call prescribed me another one, and his choice seems to have been the problem. I quit taking the stuff Wednesday or so, and I feel better. My hip still hurts, but the stuff was known to aggravate arthritis and asthma, so I wonder why the hell I was prescribed it. I guess I need to run out of meds and get sick only when my doctor is in town. The stuff also had other side effects, such as flu-like symptoms, sleeplessness, muscle cramps (what? That's like tranquilizers causing hyperactivity-it don't make sense), and GI tract distress (you know what I mean). It can also causes liver failure (and this drug is supposed to help people?), and some of the effects, like worsening arthritis, can be permanent. So I still have an appointment with an arthritis specialist Tuesday. I'll let him look at my back, too; that'll scare the bleep out of him.

But, anyway. I'm better. Now we just need to figure out why people's computers keep going on the fritz.

Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly-MRI: Results
Post by: daglob on April 16, 2017, 03:23:13 PM
The results of the MRIs is that there is a little arthritis in my hip. However, I have a ruptured disk that is squeezed out so that it puts pressure on the nerve that goes to that hip. So, they want to do a shot in my spine (or close to it), and that should give me some relief for a few weeks to a few months. If it doesn't, then back to the drawing board.

However, if it does, then there are two paths to follow: one, it may happen that the material will be absorbed by my body. If so, great! If not, then it is supposed to be a simple operation to go in and snip off the excess and releive the pressure.

It won't stop my back from hurting, but hey, like getting up at 3:00 am for a quick trip to the loo, that is pretty much normal as far as I am concerned.

The doctor did not have the bleep scared out of him looking at the MRI of my back. He was impressed, though...

The good news is WOOHOO; More Steroids!

And we are entering in to the summer weather pattern, which means afternoon thunder showers, so there might be a lightning bolt in my future. Maybe this time we get super-powers...

Still waiting to sort things out. Had to wait on my brother; his operation was more immediate. I just thought it would be too much for the family for us both to be out of action at the same time. Almost getting used to it, which is not good... but no steroids yet (Boo hoo...)

Hope you are doing better.

Grain of salt, I think getting used to=coping, so maybe not all that bad a thing. I'm in the patience zone too, I kind of don't mind the break actually. Too many treatments becomes overwhelming. I'm doing fine from that. The real pain of it only lasts about a day and I already sweated through last night. Just an inconvenience now, else the big treatments are giving me much stability than I had in the past.

I can say depends there too. I'm with a pain management clinic. They can be hesitant with scripts due to current federal law constraints yet in the same hand have more authority to prescribe controlled substances then even most ER's. Else they tend to push new form nerve blocking, usually through the spine and/or with added devices in play. I tried it myself and can say it only made things worse adding lower back issues to everything. Most doctors won't honestly suggest it either as it's in clinical stages yet, akin to chiropractic alignment in the eighties, and in the same toying with the spine is extremely dangerous just due to infection risk among other things. I say if it comes to that for you only opt for nerve blocks if a nerve in the spine is in fact the culprit (assuming it isn't here) else opt out as you'll waste your time with it. Myself drugs aren't a choice answer yet they are what's tested and work so for now I'm sticking with that. In moderation it isn't really deadly anyways. Else I think osteopathy and other regimen type treatments are valuable if even a slow and steady process opposed to immediate (hence the crutch of narcotics). G'luck with it at any rate and keep us informed.

It's been raining pretty much constantly since yesterday afternoon, Dauphin Island and the coast are flooding, some low-lying places are getting standing (actually rushing) water, flash flood warnings are being issued for all the counties in the area, traveler advisories are being issued warning people about crossing bridges (don't remember them doing that before), and while typing this the wind has picked up. Oh, joy.

I am supposed to get an epidural next Tuesday, and don't know how long I'll be laid up (24 hours, probably). But that means steroids (WOOHOO!)

This typed after I got back from the Cancer Center:

This goes back to "The Good: Part 2". I find myself re-reading this whole thread at times, those times when I really feel bad or down. We are all really strangers here, most of us have never seen the other face-to-face, and probably  never will. We still talk to each other, try to support each other through all the miles between us.  It's not just our mutual interest in an old computer game, it's something more. I think it is a real part of being human.

There need to be more of us.

It wasn't really all that bad; places that usually flood flooded, places that don't usually flood didn't, they closed The Causeway, a car ended up in The Bay, several cars ended up turned over on the Interstate, some roads washed out, the creeks are up... you know, the usual.

Ty Phantom Eyebrow, sorry I missed ya. Just some removal on the tailbone. Made it through and am healing fine.

Rain full stop here as well as storms and tornados on and off. Mostly working in the basement anyways. Best healing prayers getting through the procedure though I believe in you and your strength. And true true, it's like Cheers in here. More it's a real community. Most websites claim to be as do cities but this is the one where neighbors say Howdy. Really I feel like I know your faces too, like I know you well enough that it forms a visual if that makes any sense. Or more there's a look within and without of people you connect to as opposed to how a mannequin looks enough like a person but there's no soul to "see". Glad to have you and the rest as friends. In stride buddy and I'll keep on doing the same.

And that's exactly why he lives there.  If you're the expert on something that does bad things, why would you live anywhere near it?

Back when I was living in Biloxi, if John Hope from The Weather Channel said a hurricane was going to do something, the hurricane followed his instructions.  *That* was how much he knew about hurricanes.  "Listen to the old guy."

Fun fact, he entered his daughter's name on the hurricane naming list, and it ended up being used for the legendary Cat 5 that slammed into MS in '69.  Camille.

Photobucket has been annoying me for months. They had pop-ups that made it difficult to load pictures or set up a link so I could display pics, and recently they have tried other annoying things (such as telling me there was a mandatory update to Firefox I needed to install before I dare go anywhere else; I don't use Firefox), and I had decided that I would have to look elsewhere soon. As you can see by my avatar, they have decided that you can't have 3rd party hosting on the free account. So, I will be looking elsewhere sooner than I expected. I am open to any suggestions or recommendations.

On the plus side, the steroids seem to be working just fine. I still have pain, but it is NOTHING like it was.

Opened an option for you of course. Use it whenever you have the need. Else nice to read your health is moderate. Spinal infection here, toughing it through but holy molee I could do without it.

Here ya about Firefox too. The update isn't that bad though. But it's buggy and malware infested. I only use it for my FTP client these days. Else I learned a trick to set the homepage to one that isn't monitored, in my case DuckyGo. That way all the annoying stuff doesn't pop up when you open it.

It's not a real Firefox (Or Java, or Mediaplayer, or, like I got today, Chrome) update; it's a fake. I've even got a pop-up saying that I need to install a program to download from Medeiafire (and Mega). I saw someplace on the net someone complaining about it and the web site said that the pop-ups were coming in thorough paid-for advertising, and they couldn't go through the code for each ad and see which ones were the guilty parties. Mediafire has popped-up a window that refuses to let you do anything until you click on another window. I remember 'way back in the bronze age when such "yes or no" windows were actually a "yes" button; it didn't matter where you click, the answer was "yes, load me up with malware". Then there is the "Migrosovt has dedegdede spyware on yur gombuder and id id eben now zending all yur basswurds and berzonal invofmajion do criminals. Bleese gall Migrosovt at dis number and a Migrosovt sbecializd will helb you".

The one I love is from the Russian site I get comics from occasionally. Now, it insists that "Migrosovt" has dedegded spyware on my computer and will not allow it access to the site I am attempting to enter until I contact their "sbecializd" and get him to remove it. You would think Bill Gates could afford a better artificial voice.

I've had Malwarebytes detect some stuff in the "temp" folder, although a couple of weeks back the Russians got me with a rootkit (since removed).

Ooh, I don't like to hear that.  I dumped Imageshack for Photobucket a couple years ago for similar reasons, culminating in none of my image links worked anywhere anymore.  I really don't feel like going through all of that again.

So, now I have two protruding disks on the other side of my spine. It is an all-new experience in pain. Makes me long for the days my left hip felt like there was an ice pick in it, until I walked and it became a sword. They were going to set it up for today, but since the order for the other hip was written, there has been a change in the requirements: this time I have to stop my arthritis meds. This means the earliest they can do it is next week (and I may have to postpone the CT and bone scans scheduled for next week), and again I have to have someone go with me and not eat anything after midnight. So for a week I have to put up with not being able to walk to the bathroom without a cane. The CT/bone scan has added a new wrinkle: six bottles of heinous glop to drink, and no real sustenance after midnight.

This whole getting old thing is getting annoying.

I'm hoping that the tropical storm in the Gulf spawns a thunderstorm (the storms have been running east to west instead of west to east the past week because of the tropical weather), and I get a lightning bolt during one of the scans.

I got two (count 'em two) shots of steroids yesterday. Now I can walk to the bathroom without a cane, and can strand upright instead of hunching over like some kind of pre-human.

So, I'm like Aquaman? Because I can totally talk to fishes. At least when they're in an aquarium—when I'm underwater too, my vocabulary tends to be limited to "Blub! Blub, blubblub! BLUB!" (and then I pass out and someone has to get me out of the water and give me the mouth-to-mouth).

...What? When Aquaman talks to fishes, they understand? Nope, that I can't do.

The steroid injection I got two weeks ago was a resounding success.

I just still haven't recovered. The weekend before the epidural I started experiencing muscle weakness in my legs, and I can still barely walk. Sometimes it's a race to see if I can get where I need to be before my legs give out. I have to use my arms to get up on my feet, so I have to be careful where I sit or I may get stuck. I don't want to even think about what would happen if I ended upon the floor (and for that reason I can't work on my computer). I can't  carry anything, I can't walk up stairs, and the doorstep to the house is like Mount Everest. I can't take care of the house, the cats, and I can barely take care of myself. All in all it's rather depressing. I go back to the doctor to see what needs to be done: wait awhile, surgery, or physical therapy.

It's rather discouraging for the doctor to say he doesn't know and look real concerned when he says it. So, first some tests (bone scan already done just last week), then decide on a course of action. We'll see what they decide then.

Yeah, not what you want from your doctor, but I suppose it's better for him to admit it and seek an answer than bull ahead with false assumptions.  Still, not exactly encouraging.  Yet, finding answers is what medicine is all about.  I hope and pray they find good ones and soon!

All in all, the best news.

So far this week I've once again been injected with arcane substances and shoved into giant machines that bombarded me with obscure energies and got to have electrodes stuck into me and had electricity shot through them to measure nerve conduction. The end result is that I can neither shoot electricity nor magnetism, and the only thing I've been told so far is that the neuropathy in my feet is really bad. And I still can't walk... :pumpkin-sad:

The test results are back.

First up what worried me, is that the neuropathy in my feet is not spreading up my legs. It is possible, but not in this case. What the doctor says is that another disk is rubbing my spine, and, instead of pain, I'm having muscle weakness. So, sometime in the near future, I get another shot of steroids (Woohoo!). The problem with this is that with Medicare I only get six shots in a 12 month period. Although, if I need a shot low on my spine, maybe they will get both places and count it was one.

They have closed the bridge to Dauphin Island; the west end of the island is suffering severe erosion damage.
Gulf Shores is supposed to have closed he bridge over the Intercoastal Waterway; the express bridge was still open last I heard.
Bayou La Batre is asking people to evacuate along the Bayou and some rather low, swampy places, and to please evacuate if you live in a house trailer.
Most cities around here have issued a curfew.
The Mobile River is backing up; not too high yet, and funnily enough the Causeway over the Bay is still open... but not for long.
They will close the raised expressway over The Bay shortly. The wind is getting bad.
"The Usual Suspects", those places in town that usually flood are doing just that.
It's funny to watch the newer newsmen and women out in driving rain trying to deliver a report. What's really funny is that a couple deliver their reports while looking at their phones, and the rain is getting so bad they can't read them.
The hail is banging on my air conditioner. Branches keep falling out of trees onto the house. We are getting the feeder bands. No lightning yet. Or tornadoes.
It is supposed to be aimed more at Biloxi, but we are on the worst side of the storm (there is no good side).
Last report I saw said that there was some disorganization going on, but it might still be a Category 2 at landfall. Or it might not; it's a hurricane.
We are at least six hours away from landfall.
I could have done without a hurricane this year. Or the next. Or... :(

Yeah, it was getting a bit breezy :P

Mainly lots of rain. I kept my eyes on the tornado warnings they were issuing, and luckily, none got close to where I was.

Also, I learned over the weekend that nowadays, Tornado Warning doesn't just mean that a tornado has been spotted (which is what I've always been taught), but that a thunderstorm has started to experience rotation, which may or may not turn into an actual tornado. So it was kind of like a Tornado Watch, but a bit closer to touchdown. Kind of like when you shake one of those Tornado-in-a-Jar things really poorly. :P

Glad to hear that everybody else is doing well! I'm super glad that Nate didn't turn into a Cat 2, let alone a Cat 3 :P

Doing alright. I had thought the problem was still the aftereffects of the ruptured disks, but the osteopath decided that I needed to get things checked out. He suggested the emergency room (He thought it might be a pulmonary embolism). They admitted me to the hospital to relieve the fluid in my chest.

I've been joking about being able to remember plots to comic books from the '60s and not being able to remember last week, saying that the hormone therapy has three side effects: water retention, osteoporosis, and I forget the third... but now I find that strong chemotherapy (and what I had was strong; that was why they put in a chemo port)  causes memory problems and loss of mental acuity. The problems may take years to recover from, and in some cases it's permanent.

This definitely counts as "The Ugly". I'm so happy I could plotz.

Carolyn Crane died today. I know this means little to you, but she was my mother-in-law for seven years. Funny thing is, although my ex divorced me, her family didn’t. Her grandmother sent me Christmas presents, as did her mother, and her mother kept me supplied with oyster dressing around Thanksgiving (don’t knock it ‘til you try it, and don’t try it if you don’t like oysters). My ex’s aunt gave me some furniture when I moved out. Once when I picked up my daughter from her grandmother’s house, my ex’s father came out to the car and told me that my ex didn’t know what she wanted, and I hadn’t done anything wrong. Many times I felt like a stranger in my own family, but I never felt that way with my ex’s. Carolyn has been my mother for nearly 40 years. I will miss her a lot.

I'm typing this using a screen driver that was probably new when I had an 80286. Because the fine folks at Microsoft decided I needed a new video card, when WX updated yesterday, the screen of my computer went whonky. According to all the diagnostics the card was fine, the drivers were new, and everything worked just fine. Finally, I found when the computer updated, the graphics card drivers were not correctly installed. I went to AMD, got the driver, and installed them myself... and they didn't install. It took awhile, but I finally tracked down a page at AMD that listed the adapters that were supported by WX, and my card was not among them. It said, as a matter of fact, that any card below a certain series above mine was not supported.

But if that is true, why did it work yesterday? :banghead:

In addition, it changed several of my preferences (so it could show me all the neat things I have turned off can do... and I had to shut up Cortana again). But what this means is that FF skins, which are 7.11X7.11 look like they are 6X10. Text on the screen is larger and stretched out, adds on the sides of the screen can cover the readable sections because hey are even larger than anything else.

At least it didn't reset the screen to Tablet Mode, like it did once...

This is one among the many reasons I dislike Windows 10's mandated automatic Windows Updates.   Let me know what updates are available and what they do, then let me decide which ones I want and when to install them.

[BTW, I am not generally an MS basher. But, software companies (and not just MS) often have this attitude that "Since you bought some software from us, we now know what's best for you and your PC and you have given up any easy way to make your own decisions." Can't they understand how annoying that is for users who want to have some say in how software the user has bought affects the user's own computer?

And, yes, I do know that there are good reasons for automatic updates, both in terms of security and in terms keeping user's systems reasonably easy to support. I still maintain that the PC owner should have the final say.]

daglob, one thing you might look into is using System Restore to roll back the most recent update. That is supposed to work, though I have not had to use it on my W10 box, yet.
Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly-The Joys of Microsoft...

I have rolled back or uninstalled updates before... there was the time Photoshop quit working... but the interface that was easy to read and figure out what to do was replaced by a simplistic yet confusing list.

I can't be the only person this happened to. When PS quit there was another update within a couple of days that fixed whatever they had screwed up.

But now the laptop is trying to update, and Google Earth has already told me that it doesn't like the new drivers, or maybe lack thereof.

...and now we all know why I searched high and low for a Win7 disk when I was forced to rebuild my comp even though Microsoft was forcing Win10 on everyone. Complete control of updates and a much more stable os.

Don't know if it helps or not, but, after my niece had updated her laptop to W10 from 8.1, she started having a lot of issues. So while I was helping her troubleshoot it, from everything I read, I found that 8.1 had a glitch in the programming, and things needed to update in a certain order, or else it wouldn't take. But there still seems to be 1 problem update, and that's the problem one. Everytime that this one specific update installs, it adds things that a lot of computers don't have/need, so the whole update fails. With her Laptop and mine, this caused repetitive reboots and reinstalls of that same update. We ended up turning off automatic updates, and have been installing updates manually, with the exception of that one update, and both her W10 and my W8.1, seem to be doing alright.

For my 8.1, this is the Update that kept causing me problems, but once I disabled it, I was able to keep all my FFvt3R stuff working.

And for my Niece's W10, this is the Update that kept causing her problems, but once we disabled it, she said her Laptop hasn't given her any problems since.

No fight, no love, no glory.

It's CT scan time again, so I got to drink three bottles of barium sulphate (absolutely indescribably bad), have some radioactive stuff injected into my veins, got a chemical drip, zapped in the CT scanner and... nothing.

I don't glow.

I can't see through walls.

I can't talk to fish.

The thunderstorm went through too early for me to get a lightning bolt.

And I had to come home and lie down afterward.

At this rate I'll never get any super powers.

I didn't get to talk to the oncologist today-I saw his nurse practitioner. My daughter was annoyed, but I pointed out that I'm not sick anymore, and there are far sicker people he needs to see. Yeah, I've got bones like Swiss cheese, arthritis in my backbone, but the tests show no cancer.

Haven't posted much, I'm what is called "down in my back"... I have another pinched nerve. The good news is steroids Friday.

The ugly is that my brother has prostate cancer. His is not as aggressive as mine, so his prognosis is good.
Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly-Woo hoo... steroids
Post by: daglob on August 11, 2018, 06:05:58 PM
Quite frankly, this past spell with my back was hell. It hurt so bad I was nauseous (and in the spirit of "good, bad, ugly" I have lost six pounds), and the rest of the time I'd just lay in bed rather than get up and drag myself to the kitchen. So, here I am choc full of steroids and am a lot better... but not up to what I usually consider "normal".

So, I have to sweep the house, make pizza sauce, do a little scoping, get legal help taking possession of this house from my brother (at his request), feed the cats (my son-in-law changed the litter), wash the dishes, and scores of things I've been putting off.

The epidural did not work as it was supposed to; things are as bad as they were before it. I have an appointment Friday to see what went wrong, and just in case they want to try again I can't take my arthritis meds.

Spent all day Thursday in bed. Yesterday my six-pound alpha female cat started trying to bulldoze me off the bed and grunted and hollered the whole time. Almost sounded like a dog.

Lost another pound :).

Yeah, a lot of stuff. As I mentioned, the last epidural did not work like the previous ones. However, I had one this past Tuesday, and so far, so good. I was waiting until I believed it could last until after New Years, so the past few weeks have been bad. This is why I'm missing a week or so someplace. It's all been just one long ache.

In addition, my brother just started treatment for prostate cancer. His prognosis is better than mine was, so... And the lucky so-an-so gets radiation in addition to the weird chemicals and zappy machines.

I am also in he process of getting ownership of the house I'm living in. That's all sorts of good, bad, and ugly all at once.

I had a cat die today. Her name was Natalia; she was a scrawny little gray striped tabby who weighed in at 5 pounds or so. She was the runt of the litter from a cat who showed up on my daughter's front porch ready to deliver. The sad thing is, she never really had someone of her own. She spent a lot of time hiding or in inaccessible places. I don't know why. She was with me for ten years or so, but she barely allowed me to pet her or even hold her. I'm hoping where she goes she finds things better than here.

Actually, there isn't one.

However, along with not being able to balance on my feet and them feeling cold all the time, I am having ghost sensations. Back in October I was walking around with an imaginary splinter in my foot. I checked, I felt around on my foot, but it wasn't there. Another time I slid my feet under my covers into a pool of liquid... that wasn't there either (man, was I mad at the cats for a moment). Now, I have a rock in my shoe. Even when I am barefoot. There is no way to get rid of an imaginary rock...

Of course, I am around to complain about this so...

This is Diego. His owners tossed him out of his house and moved, leaving him behind. He tore up his leg trying to get back inside after they left. He's now in my back bathroom re-learning how to use a litter box.

He is missing his tail, it seems from an amputation that healed long ago. He also has 22 toes. I gave him the name because I was thinking of naming him Zorro, but he doesn't act like Zorro, he acts like Don Diego. So: Diego.

People are awful.  Good on you for adopting him, DG!  As DJ said, he's a handsome looking fellow.  I can just imagine exactly what you mean about him acting more like Don Diego.  That's hilarious!

Lady Grey is a crazy cat lady, and we are definitely a cat household, so we sympathize.

I'm very sorry for the nephropathy troubles, man.  I hope you're feeling better.  You remain in our prayers.  I hope your new feline overlord will take it easy on you.

Epidural Monday.

Diego has learned how to use the litter box (or maybe re-learned), and had his little operation. He gets turned loose a week from Monday.

I ordered a book from Amazon, and was notified when it shipped. Unlike a lot of orders, this one had no way to track it, I guess because the seller guaranteed that he book would be there in one week after it shipped. Come the day (a Thursday), no book. I waited to see if it came in the next day and the next (Saturday), but still no book. Their little not-really-tracking-thingie said that it should have been delivered by now, so I e-mailed them. They said they would loo into it. I had not heard back from them a week later, and still no book, so I e-mailed them again. They apologized and refunded my money. So I ordered the book from another seller. They provided a tracking number and updates on Amazon's site. It took forever to ship, and waited n Arizona for several days (the weather maybe?), and made it to Atlanta Sunday. Once a package hits Atlanta, it is almost always here within a couple of days, sometimes even the next day. I checked it yesterday morning and the tracking thingie said it was at the local distribution center, and should be delivered by 8:00 PM today (Tuesday). Today, I checked it again, and was informed that it was in Birmingham. I called the local postmaster, and she said that if she had to guess ti was put in the wrong bin when it was sorted. By this time, it had been sent to Montgomery. She said that she would flag it, and whenever it was scanned, they should get a note that it had been misdirected and to send it my way. This evening, it was back in Mobile; I was afraid it might get sent back to Atlanta, since EVERYTHING around here gets routed through Atlanta, but no, it is here. Now, it still hasn't been delivered, so I don't know if I'm going to have to order it a third time.

The book came in, finally, but that's now why I'm here.

As I mentioned before, one of the good things in my life is my son-in-law. He came over yesterday, climbed up on the roof, and used a pipe snake to get rid of a clogged drain. He did this on the way home from his night shift job. It was already almost 90 degrees.

You got more good things in life. Just popped in this one to see how it is going and had to page up. You're here, you survived cancer and a hurricane as far as I've read. Have a house, a cat and caring people. Just remember and I know this one is frustrating at times but most people care it's just that most do not know how to express it, they're stunted in that regard. More and more really people become comfortable with being snarky trolls but most often the words still mean they care about you. You've done well is what I'm saying, give yourself a pat on the back for a life well fought and lived.

Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly-Three side effects of cancer treatment:
Post by: daglob on June 07, 2019, 04:26:57 PM
Weight gain, bone loss, and... and... and...

My sister tells me that my memory problems aren't from the hormone treatment, but from the treatment that keeps me from developing osteoporosis. She said that she was having the same problem when she was under treatment for that. Now that it is done, she says she has recovered and is amazed at how good she feels. I don't get to stop as long as I'm on the hormone treatment, and my father was on it for twelve years.

On the lighter side, Diego is adjusting to being a house cat fairly well. The other cats still don't like him, but they have begun to ignore him. I'm still putting him in the bathroom when I'm not home and at night (I don't want to have to get up and stop any more cat fights than I already do). He has filled out and his leg has has healed up, although it seems to be a little weaker than the other.

Well, I guess you've got your pick of causes there, unfortunately.  Sorry my friend.  At least there's the possibility that you might get off of it eventually.  Here's hoping!

Hey, being ignored is pretty close to acceptance for cats!  That's good news.  I hope that they'll come around soon.  It took our boys a month before they stopped trying to murder each other.  :P

Hormone treatment. I'm on that. Honestly I don't think it's as bad as people say. I haven't grown any appendages and there was a bit of an emotional roller coaster in the first month or so but flax seemed to balance it out. Else it's evened out and seems to actually help a bit. And again memory loss friend, that's a if the thunder doesn't get you the lighting will thing. Hit's everyone just the older we get anyways. Notebooks, I live by them. Leave text notes for daily things with your Freedom Force stuff on your PC, so on. It works.

Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly-No tryin' to reason with hurricane season...
Post by: daglob on July 13, 2019, 05:55:13 PM
It's rained most of the morning. They have issued a Flash Flood Watch because of this. They have reported heavy surf at Gulf Shores and Dauphin Island, with erosion on the West End of The Island. The bridge to Dauphin Island is closed, as is The Causeway across Mobile Bay. I've heard sirens all morning on the nearby main roads. The wind is pretty steady out of the south, with an occasional gust that shakes the trees. They are warning of flooding in the usual places around town that flood under normal rainy conditions.

This is nothing compared to what New Orleans is getting.

Post by: daglob on September 19, 2019, 11:57:17 PM
... in four hours. Not as bad as a hurricane, but bad. Half the roads in the city are flooded, and there are house fires that emergency crews can't get to. Sink holes are forming under the water, so even if it looks like the water is only a couple of inches deep, you could lose your truck in it... like on guy over on Dauphin Street. Several "water rescues" (they just said 50 on the news) have been reported, and in places that don't usually flood (everyone kept away from those).

Houston and Beaumont have it worse. Where is DJ again?

I got way lucky and our fall desert flooding happened to skip my town completely. Naturally the desert does not hold well against floods and other cities didn't get so lucky. I'm going to steal your cat BTW, it will happen. You will go to feed it one morning and there will just be a note from me sitting where the cat used to be.

You had better hurry, or you may have to fight Lenore for him.

For the time being, I can't run my central AC for very long. Nothing is wrong with the unit; the drip pan has come loose, and the condensation fills the pan and runs out over the ceiling to the dining room instead of out the drain (the humidity here is often 80-90%). So, I am using the window unit again, and have a curtain up on the hall doorway. Diego and Henry have discovered that they can play with each other under the curtain... at least until they pull it down.

And I didn't mention that I had an epidural last Friday, so WOOHOO! STEROIDS!. Hardly any bad or ugly this week...

The Windows update today disabled my graphics tablet. I mean, Photoshop barely runs at all (more like it staggers), but his was too much. Re-installing the drivers and setting up the service again (and again), then re-booting the tablet FOUR OR FIVE TIMES has it working for now. I was thinking of asking my family for a newer tablet for Christmas anyway, but I don't like to be forced to upgrade because someone at Microsoft doesn't want to make things backwardly compatible.

AND it disabled my sound again. That is minor, but still...

Title: Re: The good, the bad, and the ugly-PET scan
Post by: daglob on October 24, 2019, 02:32:14 AM
PET scan today. They brought this little lead lined box in and squirted the stuff inside into my veins, then took me to a big machine and bombarded me with something or other.

Nothing. Nada. I don't even glow in the dark, much less develop muscles and acquire the dexterity to throw a shield around.

They are worried that I've lost 30 pounds and have these "nodules" under my skin. Now, I have been trying to lose weight, and the weight lost has been over the past two months and a little more. The nodules may be the little fatty tumors I've had since junior high. The doctor wants to check them, however. I figure he will either do a biopsy or remove one eventually to get a better look at it.

I'm not too worried.

Test results are in, and the nodules are not active. However, there is a place on my pelvis and my "breasts" that are. So, biopsies in the future, possible radiation and/or surgery.

Note this is like his fourth tour with C, second for prostate so bad news is to be expected.
