Title: Cmdrkoenig67's Map Thread...
Post by: cmdrkoenig67 on January 03, 2009, 07:23:56 AM
I didn't really want to re-make this thread (I was rather peeved that the original got archived), but oh well...

Maps soon to be released (within the next few weeks, anyway)...They'll be usable for Multiplayer, for EZScript mini mods and for the Rumble Room...

Koeing!  Those are fantastic, as always!  I'm glad that these will be released soon.  It looks like your underwater maps will come out just about when I will start working on my Aquaman campaign.  That is quite awesome!  That purple map sure is something!  I actually really like the retextured market stalls.  Very cool stuff.  I also like that castle interior, very atmospheric!

desert and arctic maps are 2 that we've been missing since the first game. i tried to use the map pack to fill the void but the terrains are all black so they just don't look right in the 2nd game :( definately looking forward to these.

Your map making abilities are unbelievable.

I cannot tell you how much I will be anticipating the release of those maps.. (when I get my real laptop working.)

I have a question for you.. have you ever considered making a Paradise Island map? That would be hardcase.

No, it doesn't technically slow my computer. It just refuses to load and stops at the loading screen. I'm going to try a clean reinstall over the weekend and see if this fixes my problem if not, oh well.

Great, great maps. Haven't been as excited about this stuff in a long time!

I do have one speed bump though. The mining colony 2 map  ( exterior one ) ONLY shows up on the ezscript stuff and not in the regular rumble room  ( epic, team ,watch etc) modes. Is their any way to get it to do so because I mainly play those modes?

Whoops!  I'll see if I can fix it and re-upload it...Sorry, Steam.  I had a feeling I'd miss a few things here and there.

BTW:  There was a texture missing from the caverns_of_hell map, it's now been fixed....So go and re-download that map, unless you want pink parts.

Herodad1 has said the hell map doesn't work correctly for him, so if there are any other issues, folks....Please let me know.

Hell map doesn't work for me either. I haven't redownloaded, but if you just changed textures... It isn't calling the ground nif though. Just big black space I can't move around on. I also get pink smoke in the Medieval Village, and have noticed... the camera does some weird things. Like when I scroll in it goes underground, and when I push Z it zooms past the hero and down to the ground. Is that maybe because of how I set the camera when editing those other maps? And the last thing... for some reason I only see one mining colony in my list, after putting both of your maps in there? And it's indoors instead of the outdoor one.

But man, sweet work here. I'm really impressed with this sewer & ego. And your snow textures came out better than the ones I played with. I should go back and try that map some time, though....

Heh... I edited the heck out of this post, as I played through them.

Hmmmm...It does the same thing for Herodad1.  I don't know why it isn't working, It's not a new map, really...It's just one of the Nazi base maps, redressed.

The problem is that the terrain nif file path somehow got screwed up and refers to the directory "area_specifjm" instead of "area_specific" You can edit mission.dat it in a hex editor and it works fine.

Did you use a layout file to import that maybe had a typo in it? That's about the only way i can think of that would cause that to happen.

Aw crap...I must have grabbed the terrain from Joe Mama's area_specifjm" folder somehow, instead of "area_specific".....I think I've fixed it now...I'll have to re-re-upload the map...Oy!

Your maps are great! I particularly love the Apokolips and Rockies and Medieval Village maps.

By the way, my Medieval Village map has a slight pink hue to it. Was that intentional?

I did upload the "fixed" Volcanic_caves map.  I'm not sure why the Medieval village has a pinkish tint to it, though...It looks fine on my comp (but I'll take another look at it, when I get home from work).

I'll answer for him. You'll see some of the new maps whenever FRP is updated. Now, the next question is, who will give prev their souls so that he may convince Dana to do more maps? :P

Love the new maps. Simply amazing stuff but I've got a problem with 3 of them:
ds_kaliklak2
ds_medieval_village
ds_rockies
As soon as they load up, the game crashes to the desktop. Any ideas why this is happening? All your other maps are working perfectly and the installation for these 3 was a no-brainer.

I don't know what the issue may be, Apfarmakis...Other people have said the same thing about those maps, yet they work fine for most people.

I'm not sure, either. The only thing I can think of is that, because it loads the map but crashes immediately afterwards, there may be something wrong with the spawn points. The player character spawns but perhaps the PC-controlled ones don't.

LOL...Most of my textures are just the irrational textures with the colors or lightness/darkness altered...I rarely totally re-do textures (unless I want to do something very specific with a map), Unk....Recycling and Re-using is good for the environment.

I'm sorry, I thought the missing Mining Colony map issue had been fixed, when I re-uploaded the two maps a while back.  I'm not sure what the issue could be now, though.

Maybe open it up in your Editor and check it there?  Check the markers, the Data paths, etc...

I'm not sure what else to suggest.

*after checking the blog post* Ah ok, thanks. They still look good without the water object, and they kind of remind me of the Atlantis level from MUA. I don't have the game sounds extracted to my drive, so maybe that's the problem. Also FFedit won't let me test the sounds. It says "could not create sound instance"...whatever that means. Anyways, I'm glad I checked this section because maps are one of the least done add ons for Freedom Force and you've filled the void nicely.

You'll get the "could not create sound instance" error message during testing, if the sounds aren't extracted.  Once you've extracted the sounds, you should be able to hear them during testing.

Thanks for the compliments...I hope you get the sound to work.

I wouldn't sweat the tree shadows.  I bet a lot of people have the shadow settings turned down to avoid the ghosting problem.  Plus, It really doesn't look bad at all.

There's an issue with converted meshes where if you have more than one of the same mesh in the game (e.g., two different characters that both use male_basic), the meshes will sometimes display a sort of ghostly "after-image" that mimic each other's movements. If you go into Options and turn off shadows, the problem goes away. Apparently the issue is the lack of a "NiSkinPartition" on the old FF1 meshes. There have been a couple of attempts at fixes -- Tommy found a way to fix some meshes using NifSkope (the tutorial's up on his website), and there was a Python script floating around that would supposedly generate the NiSkinPartition as well. But I think most people just take the easy way out and turn off the shadows.  ;)

Please, please share the Python script or a link to it, YL...I'm having the ghosting issue with a few of my mod meshes (the two meshes you made me are ghosting as well).  Thank you, my friend.

Best.

Title: Re: Cmdrkoenig67's Map Thread...
Post by: NomadX on September 18, 2009, 05:06:54 PM
Eh, from what I've seen the python script adds a skin partition which will fix ghosting but it doesn't fix the floating pieces problem. I find that using blob shadows (which the first game used) works fine though. Anyways, on a different note, your Murderworld map is awesome.

Sorry BG,  I never answered your question...The map is meant to be post Atomic holocaust/post fire/Post something very bad...I'm calling it Dead World.

Eh, from what I've seen the python script adds a skin partition which will fix ghosting but it doesn't fix the floating pieces problem. I find that using blob shadows (which the first game used) works fine though. Anyways, on a different note, your Murderworld map is awesome.

Thank you, Nomad.  Blob shadows only works on the characters, though...Not objects (like trees), unfortunately.

I've been working on converting cars, But I can swap to ships to help your dock and island maps. Submarines, aircraft carriers, destroyers, sailing ships, fishing boats, and on and on. I might be able to find a floatplane to convert too. I think some grass huts that might go on the island.

Title: Re: Cmdrkoenig67's Map Thread...

I went ahead and converted about 10 this morning. 2 civilian - a fishing ship and a cargo ship, the rest military - destroyers and the like. A couple of sailing ships, but they come with the sails up and I'm not sure how to show them down. I'll go ahead and add the 2 subs, one nuclear and one not.

For some reason, I'm unable to run ffedit for FF, but FFVTTR works, so I'll do size testing there.

Dana, should they be set as vehicles or objects? Not sure how the maps pull vehicles. If they choose them randomly I wouldn't want a sub appearing on the city streets.

LOL...It depends on how you want to use them (objects vs vehicles), but the game won't randomly choose the sub for maps.  All the cars you see on maps are placed there either by the map-maker or by coding.  The sub would have to be chosen specifically via coding to appear on a map.

With civilians, it randomly picks the skin if there's more than one choice, correct? Is that hardcoded or scripted? Are vehicles the same way? I have a limo that has 3 skins, white, black and pink. Would the limo placed on the map show up in game in a random color?

The game only randomly picks skins for vehicles and civilians, if their templates have "random" typed into the skin field (near the bottom of the Templates tab in the Editor).  If nothing is typed in, only the standard skin will show up.

I've got all the ships converted. I was also able to figure out how to copy a bounding box from another nif into them, plus resize the box, rotate it and move it around any of the 3 axis. Haven't found a way to edit the actual shape of the box.

When I'm in Gmax or Blender, I can see a natural bounding box around the mesh, I've tried working with the bounds in Blender, but I haven't found a way to export the bounding box out with the mesh. Searching the web hasn't helped. I would think there must be an easy way to do this. Anyone?

I was going to check the size of the ships in ffedit, but found neither works on my winxp machine, even though the games play great. Going to install on my Win7 laptop and see what happens.

Edit - turns out that FFVTTR does work, its just hard to get the double clicks to get into the directories when editing.

Found out how to edit the shape of the bounding box as well, but turns out working with the bounding box in Blender is much easier than in nifscope - for me at least.

Dana, sending you the WW2 sub - its been sized correctly and lowered to the height that its partly submerged. Tested and characters can climb on it and walk on the deck, but needs a more complex bounding box to keep them from walking through the guns and tower. Since all I can work with is FFVTTR, that's what it's converted for.

Edit - I just noticed that the dock map is for FF1. I'll go ahead and try to convert the sub to FF1 and send it out.

Now that I know how to do one, the rest should be setup faster.

I downloaded your warehouse maps but for some reason they did not show up in my Rumble Room. I installed them to both my Data folder and my FFX folder, and ran both programs, but they weren't on the list. I don't know if it was just my not installing it correctly or what, but I thought I'd let post about it, in case maybe someone had the same problem.
