Sat down this morning and checked each link to see if they still worked (or were still broken; see comment on Tortuga's site). Once I got there, I tried downloading something to see if I could. I've updated the list, and used still another format to notify folks of the changes. Maybe I'll try to fix it so that it is uniform sometime, but don't hold your breath. Remember: the "lost" sites might still be available through The Wayback Machine; plug the address into the search panel and see what they have. You might have to look for an earlier capture to get anything. Also, a lot of stuff just isn't there anymore.

Got a bad feeling about The Vigilante's site, ~~but Tortuga's seems to be working again~~. :wacko:

Also: be careful out there; a few (looked like five) of the sites (probably defunct ones that have been taken over by someone else) try to load a page insisting that you have to update a program that doesn't need updating, and will lock up your browser until you click on something. Previous experience makes me leery of these; I've seen windows like this that the entire thing was a "yes" button, so it didn't matter what you clicked on, it would go ahead and load you up with spam. They are loading so fast they are almost undetectable, and don't show up as a tab or on your taskbar. To get rid of them you have to use Taskmanager or a process explorer to kill the application, or take a chance and click in the window. Me and my sledge hammer would like to have a talk with these people...

These sites on the Wayback Machine still have working links. Some pages on a site may work better than others; it will just take time to go through them and download what is still there. Sometimes you have better luck trying an earlier capture of a page; you do that by clicking on the "scale" near the top of the page. It is (was?) a cool site, but I've been through it and, as you say. nothing works. Which begs a question: should I include sites that don't work, just as a kind of guide to what was on the site. I think that most of the skins here are available someplace else (although that place may be my and CB's hard drives)?

Hey DG, do you know of a way to access the map pages of FX Force? I can get to the site, but the menu doesn't work anymore, and I don't remember the address for the maps pages. Being able to save those pages and have a visual reference for classic maps would be tremendously helpful for modders.

Thanks DG! That gave me a partial success. I got to the maps page, but most of the images for individual maps were gone. Opening them one at a time, I managed to find a few, but most seem not to have been archived, at least in my searching.

I had hoped to find archives of Skindex and The Vigilante's sties before they removed the Marvel content, but I don't think there is anything left at Skindex, and Vigilante is exempted from the archive for some reason. I'd also hoped to get his Flex Mentallo, which has a broken link (a couple of other links are merely misspelled, but Flex is broken).

Went through the sites available on The Wayback Machine. The loss of content is constant, with stuff that was there last time suddenly being 404. Again, sometimes an earlier or later capture (accessible through the scale above with the dates) will let you download some things.

There were some files that I couldn't download, and tried another in the group that did, but this has gotten pretty standard with Yahoo. Tomorrow those files may be back. I'm getting some virus warnings on a few downloads, and don't know if they are real or not.

Thought all of you would be interested in hearing this. I just went up to Yahoo and came across this message; Starting December 14, 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer host user created content on its sites. New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019.

Which means, that a LOT of classic stuff is about to be lost forever so if anyone is interested in getting any of the meshes/skins/maps/voice packs etc, you had better do it now.

The real credit goes to those who did these things in the first place (of which you are one). I know a lot of these meshes and skins have been rendered obsolete, but some just look so neat, and the amount of creativity that goes in to some is amazing (Ghost Rider on Vegeta?).

A trick here, I noticed a lot of the links are dead. Truth is though the hyperlinks are, not the file storage itself. So the trick is you go to the address, I'll use Val's on NPI since it's one of the high traffic ones for us here. You go to the addy and erase the end of it, the part that brings you to the site page and back it up so there's just just a directory with a / at the end. This will kick you into the directory tree mode and you can then download the files via Save As. Here's the example. I could not dl all of these just by clicking on them when the page itself was there with graphics but can download any through the back door like this.

I didn't see this anywhere on this topic;

Detourne_me's mediafire site is still active. I've seen a few links to it in the forum, but it looks like people think it's all DM stuff. Besides having his work, its got some stuff from Style as well. I was able to grab of few of his maps I didn't have also.

More importantly, on the ' character backup" section, he's got zips of most character groups for DC, Marvel, and others. These are NOT just his stuff!

It looks like these are just about everything he had collected over the years. The zips I downloaded add up to over 4.6 gigs! Looking through a few I saw work by AA, Ren, C6 and LP, among others. I'm sure that this has a very large selection of what's available.

I think that this would be a great treasure trove of resources, especially for anyone just joining up and who's looking for a great place to start hoarding.

No mention if they're for FF or FFvt3R, or both. Even if I have most of what's contained, I'm sure there's something new to be found. It'll take a while to go through them though.

It hurts to reply to this thread with DaGlob gone. He was dedicated to the preservation of this history of our community. When I came back he quickly offered a hand with a mediafire link to some meshes I was looking for. He did that for a lot of people.

Knowing how fleeting those links can be, I searched the forum for other times he linked to his mediafire uploads. I downloaded all that I could. 2018 on back were already gone. Still, here's 3GB of files DaGlob had shared with others.

Daglob was always there trying to help anyone with their requests. I know he came through for me many times, and I'm there on your file list.

I'm trying to get an incomplete picture of what's out there by working on my list and being available for anyone one needs something when its done - within reason of course. I'm just not not sure of hosting others people's work online without their permission. I think Wyldfyre's preservation pages would be a good central site and we should give him as much help as he needs when he gets rolling again.

Maybe some of the older members who are no longer active could pop - in and give their permission for hosting. I certainly give permission for my work, even though its mostly imports from other sources , so there might be a problem there.

That is extremely exciting to hear.

I've learned how to use a command line tool to pull down entire backups of old sites on the Wayback Machine for easier sifting through. It let me quickly pull down about 2.6 GB of old skins and mods. I've done some minimal sorting and reuploaded here:

This is great Ewzzy. We'll never get everything archived, but preserving everything we can will have to do. I'm sure there are still a few members who have things found nowhere else.

Cyber and Daglob were too of the biggest hoarders we had, and more, they were always willing to share. Losing them hurts in so many ways.

Skindex seems to have the most archived, probably because of the cease and desists it received in the past.

It's too bad so little of Electric Freedom was archived though, so many old FF read-mes mention meshes that were only on it and the defunct Yahoo groups. I hope someone still has that on a drive somewhere.

I see the Transformers mod amongst that stuff too. Anybody got the old Matrix mod?

I downloaded one as a test, and wasn't prompted for payment of any kind. However, it looks like either he, or the site he's using, is trying to bundle other things with the downloads. You can opt to not get the extra stuff, but it's not a great look.

Of all of the content he's got on there, I think Tomato is the only regularly active creator. Not sure if 'mato wants to ask him to stop hosting his stuff or not.

That looks more like his site host charging for the bandwidth, not the person that uploaded everything. Note the portion on the bottom encouraging people to start their own account & link to others.
