This topic will probably escalate,if we are thinking about the same thing.

Actually, fun fact, as our longtime forum members would know "I'm just saying" was the catchphrase of a group of older forum members back in the day.

All I have to say is, if this is about what I think it's about: Keep calm and carry on. America will still be here, and things are never as bad as they seem.

I don't think any lines have been crossed here, but I will caution folks to proceed with care, in favour of an open minded community:

10. This is not an appropriate venue for discussion of religion or politics. Posters will refrain from making comments on those topics and care should be taken that humorous comments don't seem like sniping to those with different viewpoints.

Having said that, this is clearly a discussion on the fact that toblerones have increased the size of the gaps between the triangles in the UK and we're all outraged. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-37909035)

Lots of love,

I had a dark chocolate knock-off toberone once. Didn't love it (not a fan of dark chocolate to begin with. Love white chocolate)
Now you got me wanting a white chocolate toblerone. I've gotta run a few errands around suppertime so I might just pick one up while I'm out.

My plan is to treat this like I do with the Twilight series... I can't do anything about it, so I'm going to do everything I can to pretend it doesn't exist.

I love Toblerone, but unfortunately there aren't many stores near me that carry it. Best chocolate I've ever had, though.

Now you're making me think of that knockoff film staring Captain America, a Mexican Wrestler, and Spider-Man as a villain.

Considering Battleship, I can only imagine Solitaire will be some kinda mass market popcorn action movie that just happens to feature solitaire wedged into the narrative. Unfortunately, the best possible version of that movie already exists, and it's called Casino Royale.

I've seen John Wick on my movie streaming service...maybe I should watch it. It had low ratings so I skipped it.  We're still talking in metaphors about subjects we're not supposed to be talking about on the forums...right?  If John Wick is like other movies then the post production was done in China.  I'm just sayin...

Sometimes those streaming services', e.g. Netflix, Amazon Prime, "ratings" are actually just recommendations depending on what you've seen, not necessarily how good the show/movie is.  I just learned about that a few months ago :P

I'm seriously saying John Wick was an awesome movie. Possibly the best of the "retired bada$$" movies of late (Taken, Equalizer, Jack Reacher).

Also I'd like to apologize for leaving the g on at the end of "I'm just sayin'". The G-String, however, was right where it belonged.

On a different note, white chocolate Tolblerone acquired. It was tasty. I'm glad I shared it with others though, because I probably would have felt really sick otherwise.

Sadly no. I thought it was a going to be a fun, open show for all audiences, but as is, it's really only marketed to straight white people who remember the old show growing up rather than a new generation of fans with fresher, more progressive ideas. It's also got some strange ideas about foreign policy. That one episode where a corrupt government official tried to institute a ban on immigrants was just weird.

Same here. It's just that it's so... frustrating, you know? But I guess we'll all just got to deal with it in our own ways. And I guess one of mine just turned out to be comparing recent events to a show I never even watched. ;)

So the best advise I can think to give is one I heard from one of my favorite Youtube personalities: "It's ok to not be ok. Be as ok as you can be right now." Some might say that's unhealthy, but I find it more encouraging than a lot of these "empty platitudes" tend to be.

Agreed. In fact most bookworthy psychologists suggest it, that is to allow yourself to experience the range of your emotions and when they need to be felt. Else in an effort to "trick" oneself emotions are bottled causing internal decay and apt to come out later at times and in directions one would probably regret.

Sure. Problem though is that said plan isn't really much of a plan. Hell, MacGuyver didn't even come up with it himself, and whoever he cribbed it from had no clue what the heck they were doing. In fact, it was so bad that it inadvertently released a radioactive wave that's poised to actively lower our kids' intelligence levels over the next 4-8 years. How's that for a f***-up?

Shall we reach a compromise?

Clearly our feelings about toblerones are too heated to keep internalized forever. Maybe we could set up a chat server, such as discord or otherwise, in which we can vent about all current chocolaty affairs without compromising the integrity and purpose of these forums? People would participate in the knowledge that it may be a political free-for-all, kept as civil as possible, but with the understanding and agreement that feelings from such venting does not under any circumstance cross over into the forum.

Else I fear this thread may skirt back and forth in dangerous territories.

If nothing else, at least maybe we could talk about Bioshock or Call of Duty or whatever the hell game these forums are actually for. I forget.

It's an odd phenomenon. I thought MacGyver was cool when I was a kid. I am not sure I actually saw it more than a few times, but the concept was great fun. My gf had the same recollection.

Now, we watch some other nostalgia-y shows on Netflix (Murder, She Wrote, The Rockford Files, etc.). Even when the shows were before our time, we generally enjoy them, both because of the appreciation of the throwback to another era and because the quality was pretty good and the shows are still pretty entertaining in their own right, even with some of the things that are silly by today's standards. Kind of like Freedom Force, really. To be honest, some of the fun is just marveling at how different things are. (E.g. "Wow! This plot would totally fall apart if anyone had a mobile phone" or "Oh, I get it. They are all acting weird because the doctor is a woman", etc.)

So, when MacGyver showed up on Netflix, we thought to give it a shot. Strangely, it didn't hold up that well. Of course, some of that is that we were watching the first season and even some great shows began with shaky starts and didn't find the right balance until later. But, it wasn't able to hold our attention. Sadly, relative to our free time, there are too many shows to really try each of them for more than a few episodes, unless we know from the start that they get dramatically better. It's an embarrassment of riches when we have to restrain ourselves because some (often hugely popular) show can't compete with the dozen other shows we are interested in watching.

MacGyver is running on ME-TV currently. Some are okay, some are... not.

You want future shock, watch an episode of Perry Mason and think how fast Gil Grissom (CSI) would poke holes in Hamilton Burger's cases. And people keep calling Perry on other people's phones...  and Tragg keeps arresting people without giving them their rights...

Mark Waid succesefully bullied a publisher into dropping a book because he doesnt like the guy writing it.I knew he was a petty, bullying wanker before, but this is a new low.
Title: Re: Unbelievable!
Post by: Silver Shocker on May 14, 2018, 12:38:40 PM
Oh, that guy, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Yeah, ok, that's kinda crappy, but let's put it this way. As soon as I saw your post, I figured there was more to the story, and it turns out there is. Several retailers threatened to boycott the book, which in comics is serious business, and the publisher claims Waid neither bullied nor threatened them. They were apparently already considering dropping the book independent of Waid. They might have done so even if Waid had no involvement. Now, you could say that's a he-said-she-said and the article I read was from CBR but the situation was pretty much exactly what I assumed it was before I read the article.  [EDIT] a bit more to add. The person in question posted in the comments to mention that the guy who posted the Facebook post on behalf of the Publisher was speaking "out of turn" and isn't in charge.

This quote stood out:'

"We do not take this decision lightly as we do believe that there should be separation between "ART" and the "ARTIST" and that separation has been blurred in our decision."

That makes it sound like the comic itself has content that is hateful. If that does, I think that might be fair for them to make the decision they did. I might not agree with it (after all, Holy Terror got published) but it's not my place to decide, the publisher is capable of that decision themselves and that's their prerogative. Now compare to Orson Scott Card. Many people say they won't touch his work (I won't) because of his political views but everything I've heard says nothing like that is in Ender's Game or whatever else he wrote. I read his Ultimate Iron Man years ago (it sucked) and I don't remember it having anything like that. Apparently this situation is different.

And, and I wasn't surprised about it, "doesn't like the guy writing it." isn't really the issue. The issue is that some people, Waid included, consider the person in question to be guilty of harassment. Now I personally don't agree with that, I'm a little familiar with his output and from what I've seen I don't find his output unreasonable, other than some language and phrasing harsher than I would personally use. I can't imagine the guy has said anything worse than some of the harsher critics of post-OMD Spidey over on Crawlspace ect and I stand by those guys through thick and thin.

I think this is a sterling example of what happens when those fans Marvel has, themselves, bullied for years (such as the Spider-Man fans Slott and Wacker bullied, doxxed, and tried to get arrested and/or institutionalized) try to get into the industry themselves. The guys in charge have created a barrier. That being said, it's ultimately the publishers call to make. We can't make people say or do things we don't want them to do, and if they really wanted to publish the book, they could have ignored Waid's message.

Now this situation has been building pressure over time and this might be the brick wall. I'm curious to tell if there will be/is a big backlash to this. Mind you, I've followed modern Marvel and DC and the video game industry for years so I know that the corporations, and in Marvel and DC's cases, the writers, couldn't give a rats patootie what the fans think as long as the product keeps selling and won't make a change (Rebirth, ect) unless they think they can weaponize it for sales (I personally found it objectionable when Didio vetoed Stephanie Brown for years only for DC to later trumpet her "return" in Batman Eternal as a selling point only to reset her continuity and character completely to zero.)

All that being said, it's also a book drawn by Jon Malin. Is that really that big a loss? On the other hand, congratulations to that guy for landing the artist of Thunderbolts and Cable.
Title: Re: Unbelievable!
Post by: HarryTrotter on May 15, 2018, 03:00:51 PM
Point isnt if its good or bad, point is that it should be published because this is supposed to be a free market.
In his own words Waid called Antartic Press and explained who they are getting in buisness with. That sounds a bit like a shakedown, lets face it.
Didnt Malin get fired after saying the industry was infiltrated by SJWs?Not that he was wrong, there.

Lets just rewind that- Mark does his best to stop somebody from getting published, gets rightfully sued for messing with somebodies buisness, and now he wants YOU to pay for that. And if you trust every "news" site,Mark Waid is the hero. #IStandWithWaid
Title: Re: Unbelievable!
Post by: Silver Shocker on October 31, 2018, 03:21:10 PM
Well, I'll say this, the "news" sites are ALWAYS going to side with the publishers and named talent over the consumers and the little guy. There's more benefits thrown their way for doing so. You might even call it a conflict of interest. They also want those juicey clicks, as we all know.

I wonder what Marvel thinks of this, and if it will affect Waid's comics work.

I know why they are doing this, its just that this spin is a bit absurd even by standards of CBR and Bleeding Cool and the like.Which at this point seems to be at war with reality.
Its not an ideology issue, and Waid is not some superhero.

I read an article by Chris Warner years ago where he said that comics are almost always on the edge of extinction, then something come along, a new concept, a new character, something. The reprint only comics were dying out when some started including new stories. Then came Superman, then the war, then... and so on. I remember something about the internet comics might be what saves the companies, although the newsstand comics might cease. This was in the '90s.

I have no facts to back this up, and a dodgy memory.
Title: Re: Unbelievable!
Post by: Silver Shocker on March 08, 2019, 11:23:18 PM
I was saying to someone recently that a Youtube reviewer I used to follow pointed out....a few years ago, actually, that the video game industry might have suffered a second crash (the first was in 1983, for those not super-up on video game history/trivia, and is most closely associated with the Atari E.T. tie-in game) and nobody really noticed it because of the industry having a much bigger safety net they did last time, because of the internet, digital sale, ect. and the way modern society has changed since then.

I follow a lot of video game industry stuff very closely (Jim Sterling's videos, chiefly) and the things we hear over and over are "Video games are too expensive to make" and "Tripe-A Video Game companies don't want to make money, they want to make all the money in the world. And placate the vicious vultures that are shareholders."

I posited that I feel like the comics industry may have had the same problem with the same result. It crashed again at some vague time in the last 10 years or so, and nobody really noticed, because, again, there's a extra safety net that wasn't there before. Again, everything needs to make money, but doesn't make enough money, so they have to result to tricks, and gimmicks and events and new #1s. So often that people get weary of them.

Like how (bringing it back to IDW) Ghostbusters by Burnham and Shoening has to relaunch itself every year or so with a new miniseries and/or new ongoing. And the miniseries is ALWAYS either a crossover with other iterations of Ghostbusters, or other properties IDW has the license to, like TMNT, and now Transformers (tieing in, yes indeed, a Transformers toy that turns into the Ecto-1. I'm not gonna lie, I kinda want one)

Me and HT were talking about the X-Men movie franchise, and just as I was heading off to sleep, it dawned on me that the X-Men franchise IN GENERAL, has faded from the public consciousness. And how can you blame it? No cartoons in years, no X-Men specific games in years, every Fox X-Men movie after DP2 being heavily delayed, and noone cares much because MCU. But I realized even the comics feel like something that gets a lot less attention that it used to (to say nothing about picking apart the quality of the comics in general over time. I was trying to think back and figure out the last time the books were constantly good and I had trouble nailing down a specific spot)

Getting back to IDW. I love the GB comic, and it's still going on, but it doesn't sell a lot. In fact, my local comic book store never got aissue of an last mini because the shipment and damaged, and they were never able to get more copies. Because the book doesn't get second printings. The trade is out now, but whatever.

The comics industry has been fighting a war of attrition for at least the better part of a decade. It's only natural the long-term effects of it would kick in at some point.

Does the comic industry have a safety net?
Fabled digital sales?Because we never see any actual numbers.
A recent "Disney is planning to close down Marvel" hoax at least made people realize one thing: they just need the IP,they dont need actual comics.

In the random movie part of Youtube, one guy went thru all of video nasties.72 films.I find that disturbing.
For those not in the know, video nasties is a term for a list of movies that were banned (for distribution) or considered for banning in the UK back in the 80's.Some of it is tehnically still banned. While you have Evil Dead and Friday the 13th on there you also have...a lot of nazisploitation gore porn that was really funting popular in the 70's.
Worst.Decade.Ever.
Title: Re: Unbelievable!
Post by: Silver Shocker on March 20, 2019, 05:21:12 AM
I've read of the video nasties list on Tvtropes. I'm not really a gore hound (the Walking Dead and some video games, that's about it for me) so I don't think I'd want to watch those. I think of the various reviewers online who review terrible games, movies ect and go "I wouldn't want to do that". Evil Dead and Friday the 13th though - that makes me think of the German Index for violent video games.

The 70's couldn't be all bad though - they gave us the original Star Wars and Claremont's X-Men. Strangely I always think The New Teen Titans came out in the 70's but apparently it was the 80's. I'd the guess the reason why is because I'm mistaking Perez' work on that book with his work on Avengers in the 70's.

Its an interesting work of cultural archeology and a testament to human spirit going thru 72 of these. Most of us couldnt do it.Or wouldnt want to.Even if as reviewer notes, good deal of it looks tame by todays standards.
Also, due to limited releases and the fact nobody bothered with DVDs later on,some of these are worth a lot for the VHS collectors. And are really only available in that format.

I like slashers like Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street, but thats about that for me.

Satan was cool in the 70's apparently. 😀

Wonder if it's the age trend honestly. Printed comic book sales and interest fluctuates like a roller coaster the high points being named ages with fast drops between. The industry has stated they don't know how to resolve this. Further in our current era most CEO's believe print will end sometime in the future though most estimate more closely it will become an issue of lesser books in print. I could see IDW taking a hit earlier than others because it's properties aren't as hot topic as the big two currently, especially of course Marvel right now. People like Turtles sure, comics about Dungeons and Dragons and X-Files I doubt as much. Just saying we'll the see the whole book cutting thing happen with DC and Marvel soon. Then again Image and Dynamite survived past trends even when they had nothing to put out and Chaos Comics somehow is still around in a way so I kind of believe IDW won't fold either. Though we are in an era where we've seen commercial giants crap out and sell themselves off, I mean Fox Pictures I would have not anticipated and Sony isn't doing so hot either so if it does happen I'll be sad but not surprised and as always still have the fond memories and old books to read. Hey, wouldn't that actually up the value of our TPB's? * rubs greedy hands together *
