Title: Legion Mod
Post by: John Jr. on September 10, 2009, 12:49:36 AM
Finally getting somewhere with my Legion mod, so I decided post some screenshots.
Mission 1, encounter 2, Superboy vs Bizarro Superman. Yup, I said Bizarro SuperMAN.
I'll try post Mission 2 screenshots tomorrow. Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl and Wildfire vs the Legion of Super-Villains to stop an interplanetary war.

Thanks. Making a mod can be downright frustrating sometimes, but it's worth!
I should have the final mission scripted by Sunday, then I'll make tests and finishing touches. Anyway, it should be finished before the XXX century
Now, as promised, Mission 2 screenshot:

Wildfire: Mesh: VX Wildfire by Vertex, Skin: C6

Thanks to all the creators above.

Congrats on getting this far JJ!  It is always awesome to see new modders coming up.  This adventure looks like a blast, man!

Thanks a lot, Benton!
Benton will be on my next "thank you!" list, since I could not make my base screens without his help. The damn thing only worked when I used Benton's as template. Every other time I had to deal with the Bizarro cameraman :banghead:
"Bizarro thinks zoom out is great to show close ups on characters!"

Hehe, "Bizarro am great cameraman!"

Anyway, no problem man.  Hopefully I'll be able to figure out what's giving you trouble eventually.  Base scenes seem to be more temperamental than regular missions.

Good job on the modding, JJ. Always nice to see both a new mod and one geared towards the DCU. If ya need the mod hosted somewhere, FRP2 would be glad to host it. ^_^

Whether you know the Legion or not (and my knowledge was largely established by Tommy's own excellent mod), this is new FF content, and that is always a good thing.

Your work was a big influence on my decision to make this mod. Of course, since I can't do mesh I would never be able to do the mod without the work of guys like you, vertex and Greycount.

Like Tommy said the Legion of Super-Heroes (LSH for the old friends) is returning from continuity hell. Having it on mind I made the mod open to anyone who wants to play, if you never heard about the LSH you can have a fun super-hero sci-fi story to play.
I'm trying to identify all characters with the "Biography" text on character edit and avoiding any chronological references to make it more "user friendly".

The mod will have four missions, if all goes as planned I'll do a second story arc in the near future.

Cool! I think, if in this one you don't include them, have the Fatal Five make an appearence! You must have them in a Legion mod!
Title: Re: Legion Mod
Post by: John Jr. on September 17, 2009, 04:30:21 AM
The Five aren't on the first story arc, spydermann93 . I have a story arc with them I really want to do, but it needs some still non-existent meshes/skins, like Aquaboy (yes, Aquaman was a teen super-hero too, just ask Benton ;) ) and "The Super-Sons of Superman and Batman" (anyone else remember them?).
The Five would travel to the past to change the facts that originated the Legion, like they did on an classic Cary Bates/Dave Cockrun story, but in a bigger scale. The Legionnaires would travel to the past and team up with heroes like Kamandi, OMAC and the three above to stop them. Since I'm still learning to skin and my skope abilities are non-existent, I'll have to create another plot.

Almost done here.
I need a little help.
Almost all meshes and skins are for other creators, like I said earlier, some still active, some apparently retired. I need ask for permission to use the creations to each one of them or is only necessary I give proper credit on the mod?
Thanks!

if the mesh and skin have a readme, you should check it. The creator most likely will indicate whether or not you have to notify them about permission or if it's given for mod usage.

Meanwhile, a new screenshot:

Now featuring talking heads from the multi talented mr. Tommyboy (thanks again, Tom!). The head's skin is not so good because I did it myself (over a base skin of C6, so the good part is his, the bad is mine).

It was pretty fun, and a nice encapsulation of the Legion universe.  I'm looking forward to seeing more of your mods, and your parts in Patriot City Tales.

Thanks!
I really need your feedback about the Mod. I want to do a second Legion story arc, so I really need to know what you liked and what need be fixed.
I already have a basic plot for part 2, but I need to know what Legionnaires you want to see in the second part (Supergirl is confirmed, what I can say, Just love the classic Kara).
Title: Re: Legion Mod
Post by: detourne_me on October 12, 2009, 04:52:26 PM
OK...you asked for it!
I'll break down my critique into a few parts...
Spoiler

1. Meshes and Skins - I understand you wanted to keep a lot of the firestorm skins out there, but i was surprised at some of the mesh selection you chose, for example not using the VX Cosmic Boy or VX Mon-el.  I know Toxic J has done some great LOS skins too. I personally would have loved to see the most up to date skins and meshes. But that is just a cosmetic thing.

I had ghosting issueswith the Khund and Science Police meshes,  but that is a known issue, so that's something I have to live with.

The other biggie for me is that not all of the meshes were conveted for FFVTTR, so there was brightness issues with the meshes. Sometimes they were too dark.

2. Hero Files and FX - I'm not very familiar with the characters, but I know the gist of their powers. I think you did a great job in capturing the varying power levels between Legion members. Great job there.

Also Voice Packs?  Excellent! Even if they aren'ttoo specific, they add a lot of character to the mod.

However, I know you used EZFX for a lot of the powers, but did not include those FX in your mod.  On the omputer I played it on, I do not have EZFX installed, so a LOT of the ranged powers were unavailable to me (like heat vision and freeze breath) Thankfully Ultra Boy, Mon-el and Superboy are tanks, and i just punched through everyone.
So for future installments, please include all of the FX used.

3. Cutscenes - Great job here, no complaints, nice actions, I always play the game with a camera locked on the character, so this lead to some really cool camera movements (i'm not sure if you planned them)  For example the camera was looking back at Saturn Girl as she ran down the hall in the mission cutscene in the base, very cool perspective.

The writing was fun and had some in jokes i believe (was Nemesis Kid referring to Princess Projecta?) However the grammar got a little messy in the last two missions.

4. Level Design/Scripting - Nice use of the maps. Level 1 was really great, I loved the inclusion of the secondary objective too. This was a very fun level to play, and I beat Bizarro a little too easily, but had a tough time with Amazo.

Level 2 was very fun, and had a classic video-game level style to it. I was really surprised by Radioactive Rob,  he took out half my squad when he died!

Level 3 was very good as well, but probably my least favorite level. It would be awesome if it was more of an escort mission, where you would have to escort the Science police from point A to point B.  But I did find them very helpful in the fight too (as my guys couldn't use ranged attacks).

Level 4 was very innovative, and a lot like level 1 because i had to think a bit to complete the level.  The fire trap was very well done. And I liked the large gun thing too.

5. All in all, I think you did a great job. Can't wait to see what's comes next. Maybe some Fatal Five?
Some Legionnaires I'd like to see... maybe Dawnstar, Tyroc, and Element Lad.
Title: Re: Legion Mod
Post by: John Jr. on October 12, 2009, 07:56:32 PM
Thanks, detourne_me!
That's exactly what I needed.
I'll try answer some points:
Spoiler

1- I wanted to use meshes and skins of a lot of different creators, as some kind of "homage" to them. I wasn't able to contact Firestorm (no answer to my messages, probably he changed his e-mail). You can see the complete list in the "Read Me".
I used VX Cosmic Boy and only changed Mon-El to a generic mesh because I needed a lighter download and the C6 skin for Male Cape Nobelt is just  perfect. I don't know Toxic J's creations, may you give me a link?
Thanks for the conversion tip, I'll fix it for part 2.

2- I designed the mod to be used with EZFX, like I said in the "Read Me". Once again didn't included the FX to make the donwload lighter, but I'll change it if it's a problem. Again, thanks for the tip.
I'm very glad you approved the Hero Files. I tried my best to make them right and made a lot of research.

3- I'm glad you liked the cutscenes and in-jokes, and yes, Nemesis was talking about Projectra (and if you read Legion in the 80's you know he will have serious problems with her...).
English is not my first language (I'm Brazilian), Benton edited the text for me (thanks again, pal!), but he couldn't edit Mission 4, so I apologize for my rusty English.

4- I made Bizarro more powerful than Superboy, but yes, he ended a lighter threat that I wanted. Amazo worked better as the final boss.
I tried use an escort mission for Mission 3, but couldn't script it right, so I changed it. I'm still learning to use EZScript.
I'm glad you liked the Missions. Hope you liked my "surprise" villain too.

5- Thanks! I believe the Mod is okay for a newcomer, but I'm still have a lot to learn.
Part 2 will have Supergirl, Dawnstar and part of the Fatal Five. Still thinking about the rest of the team and Tyroc is a good suggestion, thanks!

I look forward to your next mod!
Title: Re: Legion Mod
Post by: Blitzgott on October 14, 2009, 02:31:54 AM
Great mod! I'm stuck in the third mission, though... Can't stop those Supermen from destroying the things I have to protect. I'll get them next time!

In my first attempt at the second mission, I got utterly destroyed by Nemesis Kid. He KO'd Electric Lad seconds after the cutscene, and I couldn't damage him much anymore with the other heroes, because of his Adaptive attribute. He destroyed me so badly that, in my next try, I put Mon-El on the team. He wasn't needed, though, because this time Electric Lad didn't flop, and he and Firestorm managed to put him out quickly. Fun stuff. =P

I really liked your hero files. You balanced the powers of the characters in such a way that the mod offers a fun and moderate challenge at the intermediate difficulties. Some of Previsionary's mods, even though they're great, sometimes had me lowering the difficulty below normal to get through some of the harder parts (the second-to-last mission of the Crisis mod almost killed me). Your mod didn't have that so far, which I think is good.

Great job.
Title: Re: Legion Mod
Post by: John Jr. on October 14, 2009, 04:49:17 AM
Thanks guys! I'm glad (and relieved!) you liked the hero files and the game balance.
laughing paradox,
I like Tinya a lot, so I tried my best to make her a good character, but faithful to comics. I'm glad you approved.
Blitzgott,
I'm glad you liked. In the comics Nemesis Kid can overpower any single character in a fight, but his powers don't work against multiple opponents, so I used Adaptive. If you get 2 or 3 different attack powers, he's less effective.
Hope you like Mission 4 too.

Since you are a very experienced player, you probably need bigger threats to feel challenged. I tried use as few "required heroes" as possible exactly to let the player set his own difficult level. I don't think you will recruit Superboy and Mon-El to your teams  :D

I had to limit the cast or the download would be too heavy. So, I decided use only the active Legionnaires (and Supergirl). Unfortunately no Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel in this Mod (but I doubt this will be my last Legion Mod  ;) )

I finally got around to playing your mod, JJ, and I think it came out well. Just something to keep in mind for the next episode, leaving the FF missions in the campdef.dat isn't necessary and it'd be best to just remove them so the game doesn't think the mod has more missions than it actually does. Also, I don't think you added an executive (.exe) to the mod folder, so you might want to consider adding one for those that don't know the how-to of making mod executable on their own.

All in all, very good effort for your first mod. I'm sure part 2 will be just as enjoyable. ^_^.

Try this:
1-Download the file (the Mod)
2- Extract it (with Wizip, Winrar or a similar program) in a folder called "Legion".
3- Place the folder inside your main  :ffvstr: directory.
4- Make a shortcut to the mod or copy the  :ffvstr: shortcut.
5- Add a -(name of mod) and a -log to the end of the shortcut's target. For instance: , "C:\Freedom Force vs The 3rd Reich\ffvt3r.exe" -game Legion -log

Hope it helps!

Ok, so I'm trying to extract the folder called Legion (which is the mod) with Winrar into C:\Program Files\Irrational Games\Freedom Force vs The Third Reich but when I try to it gives me this long list od errors! :banghead:

What "kind" of errors? If your download is correct and you're using Winrar, it should go pretty smoothly. However, for future reference, the "list of tutorials (http://freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php?topic=50675.0)" thread and the "FR wiki (http://frworld.wikispaces.com/How+to+install+a+mod)" can answer a lot of questions you may have.

It says the system cannot find the path specified. The errors are like everything. Custom_Characters, FX, and all this other stuff. Anyways, thanks for your help and I'll take a look at the mod installation tutorials!

Keep in mind that when you're extracting stuff, the folder you're moving the files to needs to actually exist. Is Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich installed in that location for you?

I'm not sure. It shows up immediately in the E: drive but for the C: I have to click program files/irrational games/freedom force vs the third reich. Soooooo could that be it?

EDIT: I try to extract it to E:\Proram Files\ irrational games\freedom force vs the third reich\  and it gives me the same list of errors!  :headbang:

I feel like I'm taking over JJ's thread. Sorry, JJ. :P.

Kombatkid, without knowing the exact error (post a screenshot or something), the only things I can suggest to you is to redownload the mod or to try extracting the files to your "Desktop" and then moving it into your Freedom Force folder.

Oh I can definately play the game. I guess I could try moving the files to the desktop after downloading them.   Btw Sorry I dont mean to be a bother by hogging your thread JJ.

It gave me a total of 5118 errors! I dont know how to put up the list of errors (man I hate being stupid).  Idk, me vs technology=technology wins

No bother at all, Kombatkid. Try to extract the mod on the desktop, like you said and after that copy the "Legion" folder to your  :ffvstr: directory.

Ok, I extract the files to my desktop. Then I extract them to, yet again, C:\Program Files\Irrational Game\Freedom Force vs The Third Reich\ and it gives the same list of errors. I try it with the E drive and get the same thing. Sooooooo I'm officially out of ideas. I guess I should just stay content with the Teen Titans mod for  :ff: (which is the only mod I've ever been able to play)

The only thing I can think of at the moment that could prevent you from installing into that folder is either A) that's not the correct location, B) you don't have full permission to modify that location or it's locked off, or C) there's something up with your download or the game locale.

When you get the errors, just take a screenshot of it before you close the dialog box. You can do this by hitting CTRL + PRTSCR and then "pasting" the picture into MS-Paint and saving. You'll then need to upload the pic to a site like Photobucket (http://photobucket.com) and link to it here.

A few more question, have you been able to install ANY mod to that location? In fact, can you move anything into or out of your FFvTTR game folder at all? Where did you install the Teen Titans mod (for FF1)?This could help us to narrow down the list of problems.

I haven't been able to install any mod by saving it then extracting it to that location. Here's where I downloaded the TT mod: http://www.fxforce.com/TTMOD/index.htm (http://www.fxforce.com/TTMOD/index.htm)

Very cool mod, I'm curious though, aren't Bizarro's powers supposed to be the opposite of Supes'? I see he has Heat Vision, and Freeze breath instead of Freeze Vision and Heat Breath respectively.   ;)

The Mod uses the 70's versions of the characters, when Bizarro had the same powers as Superman.

Final version is available, at last:
http://www.frp.unlimited2.net/mods/JohnJr/Legion.rar

I want to apologize for taking so long, but I had to deal with a lot of "real life" problems and had less free time than I expected. Anyway, the mod has 8 missions now, more Legionnaires, custom voice packs and maps.
I tried to fix every issue/bug that was pointed in this topic. In fact, I changed so many things I wasn't able to do a patch and I will have to ask who downloaded the first version to replace it with the complete version, sorry.

Changed/Added:
-Changed the TGA files to DDS
-Fixed most of the "ghosting meshes" problems
-Added custom voice packs
-Added new Legionnaires, available as of Mission 2.
-Added 4 new missions, with the Fatal Five as main villains
-I made a lot of technical fixes, as suggested by Previsionary and other partners.

I wanted to give a big, public "Thank You!" to some talented guys who helped me to complete this mod:
-Tommyboy, his Legion mod was an inspiration and a endless source of meshes & skins,
-Laughing Paradox, who made a ton of perfect Legionnaires skopes & skins and was kind enough to let me use them,
-cmdrkoenig67,Glitch Girl, and Zetor for letting me to use their great voice packs,
-Afghan Ant, who made the skope for the Therians Golden guards for Mission 7,
-Prev, for technical tips and for hosting the Mod.
-And all the talented creators who gave me permission to use their works.

I really hope you like the mod. So, enough talk and let's punch some Khunds!  :D

OK, I finally got to play this today, and it's good. Very good. Thank you.
If I may go into detail:
Overall; a very enjoyable Mod for an LSH fan.

Story; works really well. Familiar, but not too familiar. Recognizably the LSH universe. I actually wanted to see what was next. A couple of typos or misspellings ("robbed" instead of "robed", and "Zoom" instead of "Zoon" are the only ones I recall at the moment), but nothing to stop me enjoying it. Some nice touches like referencing Shooter and Swan as character/place names show a love for the Legion. The dialogue and characterization were very good, everyone sounded as they should, with some nice comic touches in places. And it "felt" like an LSH story, with the LSH and foes.

Art; again, very nice. A few of my meshes and skins look a bit rough and ready, and my broken female heads are something I really should have fixed, but those are my "faults" not yours. All the Vertex meshes and various skins by others look great. The maps used are really good too, with an actual feeling of being on different worlds with different cultures, so good choices with those.

Characters/Powers; a good variety of legionaires without bogging the player down with too many choices. Enough for replay value without the "not enough time in the world to try em all out" feeling some mods *cough mine cough* have. And the powers of each character were very satisfying too. A nice variety of powers, good FFX choices and overall they "felt" like they should, to me.

Sounds/Music; another satisfying experience. Short of having custom made LSH voicepacks, your choices were spot on. The music was enjoyable without ever distracting or taking me "out of" the experience.

Presentation; this is the one area where the mod fell short for me. I like to see new custom main screens, loading screens, mission screens etc. It all adds to the mood of a Mod for me. It's by no means Essential, and certainly cannot save a mod which plays poorly *cough mine cough*, so I don't think that your Mod "needs" it. But it certainly would not hurt. You can't beat some classic covers or artwork dotted around, in my opinion.

So for me. this Mod gets a big Thumbs Up, 9/10. A very capable, impressive outing which takes the player on a journey and leaves them satisfied at the end (but obviously wanting more).

Again Thank You. I know how much work it takes, and how hard it is to get an experience the player enjoys, a story which works, and to stay "true" to the comics which so often inspire us.

I've tried a couple times to download the mod and both times have had something odd happen.  It loads the mod, but then when it gets to where the first mission should be, the whole screen is black.  If I push ESC, the menu comes up as it should, so it's nothing directly related to FFvTR itself, so anyone have any ideas what's going on so I can fix it and hopefully play?

Thank you for a quick reply!  I'm a little embarrassed to admit, but it looks like the error was on my part, I'd copied a shortcut to make one for Legion, and never knew the "-log" was so important.  I put that back in and it worked fine.  Also, I've only thus far played the Superboy mission, and it's very well done!

Hi guys,
I followed Tommyboy's advice and finally got some custom screens for my Legion Mod (main, load and loading screens).
Thanks to Tommyboy for the idea, Benton Grey and cmdrkoenig67 for teaching me how to do it and to Prev for hosting it.
You can find it here:

Just unzip and paste it in your Freedom Force vs The 3rd Reich\Legion\Art\library folder.
Hope you like it, guys!

I just started playing the second part of this mod today:

Spoiler
I just finished the Emerald Empress mission and I must say two things.

I really liked he dialog and I loved what you did with Superboy's magic weakness. Unlike Geoff John's(with Super crybaby Prime) you remembered PC Kryptonians had one and the black magic knights were surprisingly effective foes. A very enjoyable mission although I did like the previous one as well. I hope to finish this up this weekend while dling the DC mod.

So JJ, I've been carving out little bits of time here and there to play this mod, and I finally finished it today!  I have really enjoyed this experience, and I have to say that you've created a really fantastic mod.  The Legion are one of the few areas of the DCU that I'm not terribly familiar with.  I've read some of the early archives and one TPB of one of the reboots, but I'm far from what you'd call an expert.  I've never been a huge fan of them, but like many DC concepts and characters, I like the idea of the Legion, even if the stories that I read never really captured me.  So, I really enjoyed the chance to play with these characters that you obviously love, and, as Tommy said, that love and knowledge of them really shined through in some impressive ways.  I really felt like I was playing a Legion game, with everything from the characters to the "planets" really working to put me in their universe.  Let me give you a bit of categorized feedback like Tommy did.

Characters:  I absolutely loved your balance and builds for the most part.  I've never played with the Legion where I felt like everyone was useful, but in this mod, I almost never had a character go unutilized or feel like they didn't really deserve to be alongside the others.  You did a great job of making Superboy and his ilk powerful, while still making the other characters in your team absolutely vital.  I was especially impressed with Karate Kid.  He was a blast to play with, and I took him every chance I had.  I loved that he did so much damage, but he was way more fragile than, say, Superboy.  There were a few exceptions, though.  I really didn't find Saturn Girl terribly useful in her early mission, and because of that I never used her again.  I feel like it might help if she had a few more offensive psy powers.  On the same note, Dawnstar felt REALLY outclassed in the final mission.  She did almost no damage, was very fragile, and I lost her in the opening moments of the fight with the Five.  All my other Legionaires were much more capable.  I don't know anything about the character, so perhaps I'm not sure if anything could be done about that.  Other than those two, though, everyone was really fun to play with.  I think that most characters could use another power or two, but it is hardly necessary, since everything works pretty well as is.

Art:  You did a fantastic job of bringing the Legion to life, and I rather thought that some of Tommy's meshes stole the show.  I particularly loved Karate Kid and his animations.  He just looked awesome.  I also loved the version of Brainy included in this mod.  I hadn't seen him before, and he looked fairly awesome.  Your maps were also really well chosen, and I was especially impressed with the "space cruiser" for the final mission.  Nice work!

Story: I was totally hooked.  Like Tommy said, I wanted to see what happened next.  You really told a story that completely fit into the universe of these characters, and even with my limited knowledge of the Legion, I noticed a hundred and one little touches that were really cool.  Also, this sucker was pretty impressive in scope, JJ.  I kept thinking that I HAD to be on the last mission, but the adventure continued!

Presentation:  I liked that everyone had all the right string entries and things, but I would have liked to be able to check out the Legionaires' bios.  That's a fairly minor complaint though.

All in all, this was a great mod, my friend.  Now quit it, you're making me look bad! :D

Thanks a lot, pal! I'm very glad you liked my Mod, after all I learned a lot from you about EZScript.
Saturn Girl have no "offensive" powers in the classic version, she always used telepathy and Hypnosis as her main weapons. Her mind control is her main power in the mod, very useful against powerful and dumb opponents. I agree about Dawnstar, she could be better and I'll try fix her in my next Legion Mod.
I'm a fan of Tommyboy's Karate Kid too, his great animations are the main reason I gave so much screen time for old KK (besides he's fun to write).

Saturn Girl was actually very useful in the final mission. Her melee attack that causes confusion helped me out a lot vs Validus.
