Title: Artemis' Skins: Let's pretend it's on a model... 26/06/2010
Post by: Artemis on August 08, 2009, 04:21:48 PM
Reading the boards and becoming inspired I decided to try skinning for FF again. I've been away so long and FR has changed SO much.
Anyway, since i'm currently on Summer break from University I decided to see if i still liked, and if i was still an okay skinner.
This new Avatar is just an update for Artemis. Only worked on the costume thus far, I still need to add dart seams on the bust area and other little details like that. Comments and Critiques welcome!!!

Spoiler

I'm going for a traditional superhero spandex look, with beaded/sequined/bejewelled elements akin pieces by Thierry Mugler, the fashion designer.

Since starting my fashion design course at uni last september I've come to understand alot more about garment creation; and I think it has helped me somewhat with this skin. Rambling over...

Yes more skinners coming back.

The texture, highlights, and design is very well done. You can almost feel the texture of the cloth just by simply looking.   :kommandorox

Definitely want to see more of your work.

Looking at the skin now I can definately see your point, its just a happy accident i suppose.

I finished finally - I am happy with it but now I'm feeling torn over the mesh choice - I chose Eve/female_Amazon because they have what I feel is the perfect build for my female characters. But, the hair is a bit too specific for Eve for me to totally love it. I may try transfering the skin over to another mesh but for now I am quite pleased.

Anyway, just a quick description about changes:

I was going to originally leave the skin bare, but I kept thinking how impractical and irritating a glove cut to the organic shape woyuld be so i decided to turn everything into a jumpsuit with a sheer netting over the bare skin areas adorned with random beads. I added seams to the shoulders and the back of the sheer material -but I'm not totally sold on it - thoughts anyone?
I gave her a headpiece to make her seem more 'gladitorial' and armored and I am quite happy with it. I think the only thing i may need to change to make her seem even more tough would be her facial expression - but its a mirrored mesh - so maybe not :D
And I tried making her the traditional blonde i usually have for my Av, but it always looked too green. meh. I'll just say I wanted to put a bit of Eva Mendes into the mix.

Actually, I just noticed - I need to give her some glowing eyes.... is there a way to skope a glowing effect onto eyes? Another thing for me to research! :D

Sorry for the tediously long post - But if you guys/gals have any suggestions/comments/tips PLEASE let me know!

Thanks again for all of your comments guys!

If you want her to look tough, change her eyebrows. Make them more arched, almost mean.. it'll come off as tough.

Really nice skin. I'm not a big fan of the shoulder seams, though.

Argh!

OKay looks like i won't be skinning anything else for a while - my laptop has died and I need to send it away for repairs. It had all of my University Documents and some under development skins but looks like they're gone. I did backup the new artemis skin so those seven hours werent all for nothing; i just wish I'd been as cautious with my Uni work.....bummer.

Thanks again for all your comments, they've made me want to keep skinning when i get my laptop repaired :D

YAY for computer repair!!!!

Thanks for all of the comments people, i've got my laptop back and have started a few skins but only have this one WIP to show as the others are literally just testing ideas.

I based the costume on one worn by Jane Fonda in Barbarella, if you've seen the movie you should know which one I chose as inspiration.
I wanted the character to look like a 60's inspired space alien as she is a part of my new project. Basically I'm going to create my own team of superheroes using the FF characters as a basis. I may use powers, personality or origins as a starting point but i hope to create a team of unique homages to the FF. (who i can then have battle in the Rumble Room to see who is the best :D)

So here we have the beginings of the alien telekinetic from outerspace:

I'm going to try and skope some form of headgear onto her to increase the otherworldly aspect and I also need to add something that makes her less generic - designing logos and motifs right now - I'm stuck on placement as the mesh is mirrored though - any suggestions?
And I'm slightly torn -  I like the design but, does it say extraterestrial? or just blue chick in white PVC? hopefully the logo will reinforce the space-ness for me ...

(Obviously?) she is inspired by Mentor. I think I will have her as a protector character - Shields/Shield other, buoyancy, flight, repulsion to keep villains away from her and maybe a stasis attck to represent a telekinetic hold?

Yay! Another original that people don't care about!

I've just finnished the Liberty lad character of my group, Battle Angel. Her wings are meant to be robotic, I used elements of the man-bot skin to create it. I'm also showing the actual texture map because I spent all day on such a simple costume idea and I don't know how that happened!!!

Also this is the first skin which i used my own base skin (which is just Irrationals Eve/Law/Bacchite skins pieced together on female basic.)

Any comments?

Cool stuff! What mesh is battle angel on? I love the design. In the 'arms at her hips' pose it looks like she has a more rounded jaw. It gives the effect of making her look more distinct.

I know the pain of creating original characters. I was with NPI for a while creating originals. (without half the creativity you're showing) I really dig what you're doing here.

Thanks alot for the kind words people! I'm glad you like my originals :)

@Ewzzy  - Battle Angel is on Tommyboys tom_female_versatile with everything hidden except the wings and wavy hair, with the thin body selected. And Btw, I saw some of your original characters on your site, they were fantastic - maybe you could update a few with your improved skills? AFTER you've finnished your Dr.McNinja run of course ;) (cos that stuff is too good to keep us waiting)

@Xenolith - I'm intrigued, I'lll have to take a look at Mythbusters....

I didn't even think about that golden comic book rule. Inappropriate dress - superheroine. inappropriate dress and non flesh tone skin colour = alien. Lol

I was taking another look at your blue chick, (that sounded weird) and I noticed the face seemed much brighter and paler than the rest. It looks normal with regular skin tone, but in blue it seems off. Also, you said you wanted her to look more alien. What you could do is add some speckled texture to the skin to make it seem less human. This character from Mass Effect has that going on.

Oh and I tried to find a picture of Kari Byron that looked like Battle Angel.

It's mostly the bottom right pose in your preview that has the resemblance, but I could be seeing things.

I'm attempting my first skope which up till now (including failed attempts) has taken almost fifteen(ish) hours (maybe more)

It's for an avatar update, because I've always wanted my own mesh to make me feel special....- well now i can sort of achieve this with Nifskope!!!

Okay, i need some opinions though....Should i keep the horns as is? or try and get them to the photoshopped collage's size and positioning - it definately looks more elegant and refined. But I kind of like the tribal, primal feel the big stand up horns have. Second which helm should i use? I'm leaning more to the legionnaire becase it shows more of the face....but I do like the VX_Statesman one.

Any suggestions welcome.

And now - I will be trying to create my own skopes for each of my original characters. I think Battle Angel is fine as is. But Alien Girl will definately be getting a headpiece, as well as quite possibly the skin texture technique you suggested Ewzzy, thanks for the idea!

Ooh, I love the helms. Great idea! As for the horns position, can I choose C? The first example seems too wide out and bulky but the collage seems almost dainty. A halfway point might be the best option.

I'm glad to see you getting into NifSkope. It's tough sometimes but it really opens your world up.

Thta's exactly what I did style. I did agree with Ewzzy on one aspect though, dainty is NOT what i'm going for and I think I came up with a good 'option C'.

I shrunk the horns from the initial picture, but kept them larger than the collage. I'm actually quite pleased with the finnished product. I put the shield in the centre and have started to create a little emblem.

Thanks for all the suggestions and guidance guys!

Yay another original! The Dragon! She uses the mask from ink's sunfire mesh.
I still need to work out how to add reflect/gloss layers in nifskope and i feel i want to put some folds and creases into the turquoise area to lift it from the blob of green that it is right now (especially in the chestal area).

If you're interested, she's a martial artist - yay for cultural stereotypes!

The Dragon is cool looking...But I have a question, Artemis.  Is her hair meant to be Turquoise too (or is it black with blue highlights)?  If not, it seems very close to her costume color in the pics.

Your new avatar Skope (with the helmet and horns) is looking awesome too.

I think you're definately right about the hair being too close to the costume colouring. I'm going to change it to a more obvious black right now.

*EDIT* Recoloured the hair and added some seams and folds.

I like the change you made in the hair, A...It looks much better.

I'm guessing the mapping on the nose of the mask makes it warp like that?  It's a very snazzy-looking skin.

I've been tearing my hair out trying to get the nose to texture properly. It's not playing nice though. As cmdrkoenig said it's the mapping - well that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

If you open a mesh in Nifscope, and the skin you are working on is the Standard, you can usually see updates every time you save the skin. I don't usually do this, but I have when I ma trying to get something right.

I've tried this method but I still can't get the mask to look right. Thanks for pointing this tip out though - I may need it again in the future.
I may have a solution to the mapping problem with Vertex's VXSunfire - the mask is basically the same shape but it's on its own texture map which should allow for greater detail. I just need to get myself bothered to actually skope it.

I've a new skin to show aswel....I think it's actually the first male skin I've shown on FR too. It's only taken 6 years for this to happen lol. Alas, it's another original but I think he's the last of them for a little bit. I'm getting a bit burned out and I've only done about five skins! Anyway, heres the companion of the blue alien girl......the blue alien guy!

I knew i wanted him to have a headpiece, and I struggled with what it should be. But i found this on VXLivingLaser. If he were in an actual comic book I imagine his powers would be shown eminating from it in a twee way...something like this:
Spoiler
(http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s5/jebn21/alien_powers.jpg)
Mad photoshop skillz!!!!

Yeah so, he and the blue girl are counterparts to Mentor. This handsome chap represents the telepathathic aspect of his powers while the female is the telekinetic aspect. In game I imagine she would shield him/leviitate him whilst repeling gaurds as he attacks their psyche's with mental state altering attacks.

And names...I'm debating Gaurdian for the girl as I imagine that's the role she'd play in battle. But I'm stuck on his...I was thinking The Invader - partly because of his extraterrestrial roots and partly because he'd be 'invading' your psyche as he manipulated it....meh...

I looked at pieces from various meshes - Nova's helm, Sunfire's mask, Statesman's helm, Huntresses mask, and more. But i felt that none of them gave of a sense of camp 60's alien. I know his colour scheme and costume are quite modern so I felt I should counter act this with a rather peculiar headpiece. I've adjusted the skope by adding another piece:

I think the added 'weight' of an actual meshed pieces makes the V shaped element more believavle as a structure.

I agree...the girl needs some more to her costume....she falls a little flat. I might also shrink the headbands a touch. Great work on these skins by the way.

That's an idea. The girl's headband doesn't compess her hair. Unless that is what you were going for...

Hi all, I'm taking all suggestions into account an have been tweaking the alien couple  throughout the day. Nothing major - just resizing of pieces and some extra seamwork on the female. All the comments really helped me hone the skopes into what I feel are successful designs....But youre going to have to wait until all the team is done so you can see all the subtle changes in the fancy group shot. So let's see...

Battle Angel, The Dragon, Alien Boy, Alien Girl..... that's four down...and I'm aiming to have a counterpart for each member of FF....just another 15 to go.... YAY!!!

Ah...but...what's this? Oh my, it seems that Ewzzy has been his incredible self and has very kindly skoped together a request I sent him before i had set foot in nifskope....Well this requires a skin, does it not?

Spoiler

Again struggling for a name - right now she's either Phantomess, or S?ance.
An assasin ordered dead by her former employer. How has she come back from the grave? What are her goals? Why is she wearing spandex?......All WILL be answered when I have the time to write her back story!

Ok, so she's obviously still under construction. still need to finnish shading on the mask/adjust gloves, bodice & boots texture/and more.
But I just love the skope so much!!!!

Thanks again to Ewzzy who is a complete gent, an amazing skinner and nifskoper and kind beyond words! Thankyou!

ALL HAIL EWZZY!

Any critique is welcome critique! ;)

I had an idea similar to this for my el-diablo counterpart - instead of fire he's cold based. He'd be unable to control his abilities and would require some kind of device to regulate them. He'd be constantly cold to the touch - to the point where contact would cause freeze-burn. He'd be like man-bot in his melancholy ways/. However - my Eve character would be immune to cold- leading to a relationship; and his cold heart would melt....awwww.....

So yeah - there's going to be men, Invader is the first of at least 6. I just enjoy skinning females because they're my specialty. I've chosen the womenswear pathway at University and working with Freedom Force skins is helping me to visualise dress-makers patterns. (well i feel like it is helping me, anyway.)

Thanks LP.

Okay, since I'm most likely going to have to stop skinning for a while after this week - I'm going to push and try and get a start on my X-men resdesign. Heres' a WIP of Phoenix.
Spoiler
(http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s5/jebn21/PhoenixWIP.jpg)

I'm adding a headpiece like her 90's costume which will have another, smaller phoenix logo emblem (if re-sizing keeps the clarity). Still undecided on a mesh, hence female_longhair. whatever i do decide, I will need to skope a X symbol and belt onto it. Gloves and boots are going to be added, with hopefully wing details skoped on to them (similar to batman's gloves, but a bit more rounded - like the emblem wings).

Black and gold - Not sure If it's going to be team colours or just for phoenix, but I think it works on Jean for sure.

Nice one Artemis. Two things...you might wanna try blending torso and lower body parts of the skin a little more unless your giving her a sash and maybe put this great skin on Inks Phoenix mesh....I think the results will be much better IMO. ;)

EDIT: Saw the part where you said you were adding belt. Sorry man...was at work and couldn't stay on for long therefore didn't read properly. :P

I'm with Blkcasanova, using a more... "comic" mesh like ink's ones should better the creation.

Another thing (i suggest) is to change the final part of the wings. Usually Phoenix logo is creating a (not exactly correct) triangle.

I like the final work over "leather" what about some boots?

Good work and i'll be waiting for your work ^.~

I agree with the other guys. If it's an X-men redesign, i think it would help a lot to use meshes that are dedicated to these characters. :)

And of course, your original character Seance looks really good. Nice design.

Looks like FF skinning is going to be a little less frequent. I've got to start on my mind-numbingly boring University research brief before I go back, honestly fashion trends make me zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

So A preview of what's quite likely to be an un-finished project . I'm pretty uninspired by it...when I get back to skinning I'm probably going to focus on my originals again.

Phoenix is the only one I'm happy with costume wise...maybe I should give up on the team-look and go for individual colour schemes - I like the balck and gold for phoenix but without any accents Ororo, Betsy and Alison look rather bleh. I do like Psylocke's face though, I think it's probably the best of the four - and Dazzler looks pretty PO'd. Not sure why that happened :S

And I did pay attention to everyone's suggestion of Ink meshes. I even skoped a headpiece onto his Warbird mesh for phoenix - But try as i might I could not get the belt to skope properly - it always came out tilted no matter how many times I rotated it and altered it. I wanted to break something so I gave up. When I can be bothered I will Upload a photo - I just forgot to right now and PS takes a while to load for me....time to remove some pointless stuff from harddrive methinks.

Here are some of the first attempts at skopes, Phoenix still needs a belt, goves and boots. Storm needs her classic headpiece and some jewels and a choker. (The wing capes are C6 standards.)

Thanks everyone. I'm putting my skinning on the backburner now that Uni has started again. Really exciting project coming up with Topshop - possible internship placements are rewards I'm thinking...so it's time to really buckle down and see if I can get to where I want to be.

Tbh, I'm not totally sure I'll be able to get back into skinning for a while. But I have to thank everyone at FR who made creating for FF a pleasurable experience and to Ewzzy especially as he's been a great help with nifskope and the amazing S?ance skope.

@miguelyanke: I didnt even realise storm only had one shoe. lol. Obviously that will be fixed when (if?) i get back onto the skins. Thanks for pointing it out.
@Ewzzy: I am really ahppy with the skintones. If that's all I take away from the skins then I'm quite happy - I've always struggled with non- caucasian skins not looking 'right' to me.
@murs: Thanks alot mister Murs.
@podmark: I do hope i get back to skinning them. If not maybe I can work on a mini 'superheroine' collection for my portfolio; some garment flats and fashion illustrations of the above could look quite interesting - body-con is in right now and you don;t get more body-concious than spandex and leather ;)

Again thanks for taking the time to comment on my work guys, I truly appreaciate it.

wow, 8 years of freedom force and I have only just gotten started with a base skin that I didn't immediately hate within the 1st 30mins.

Of course, it's a female base - I rarely skin male heros and if I do there are many fine bases out there, and I mean no offense to the current female base skins when I post this; it's just I would like my work to be a little but more *MY* work, I think that makes sense?
I'm not finished totally, there are some alignment issues, I need to do some eyes, I also need to work out how to get a convincing flesh tone in photoshop so any help would be greatly appreciated with that. And the lower abdomen REALLY need to be re-worked, she looks slightly flabby  ....

Welcome back, Artemis, and good work so far on the skin base. You're right about the bottom half of the tummy, but I'm sure you'll get it going. Looking forward to the final base. No clue how to make flesh tones from a desaturated base, unfortunately. I thought most base skins started as flesh tones and then you could desaturate, accordingly.

That's a nice base Artemis, I always have a lot of respect for people who make their own base.
I'd work a bit on the point where the torso and lower half match up. They don't really flow right now. Otherwise really nice.

That is looking very good. One way to get a flesh tone pick a flesh color and open up the hue/saturation box and check the "colorize" box. Then play with the sliders to get something you want. You may have to do some more editing outside of that like levels adjustments and such.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, they really helped me in creating a nice base colour (I used levels, vibrancy/saturation, brightness/contrast and a bit of overpainting) , but theres still a little bit more colour adjusting to go before it's done....and then i still need to work out some of the alignment issues but no charcter tool or nifskope is making it VERY difficult. SO I've been working on skins just trying to get ideas down, working flat and praying that it will all fit together nicely when I finally see it in CT. But I'm not going to show you that...I've been working on some faces, trying to create something distinctively me....I'm quite happy with the result. Can you guess which Marvel characters I tried to capture? (you really shouldn't struggle with the second face)

Just adjusted some things and thought about some lenses for the Black cat mask -I may do a two pack,

ANd I think elektra looks SO much prettier with some stylized eyeshadow - no more crazy MAN eyes.

I realise I gave away who they were meant to be - but, no one guessed! But I have a third WIP face here - who could she be? (again, marvel....and she could be described as similar to both BC and Elektra in that she was also the love interest of a street level hero.)

Those are good faces... your style reminds me a little of Revenant, which is very cool.

I actually thought the mask was meant for Ms. Marvel at first! I like how that mask came out.. did you use the Plastic Wrap filter or just add the white seams on your own? The eyes look really nice on all of them.

@ LP: Thanks, Revenant is one of my favourite skinners, I love his style but I never set out to copy it - but looking at the facial work on his skins I do see a sense of similarity - although, I wish i could get mine up to his incredible standard.

@ Murs: Right mr! Black widow it is! very good!

Okay, I've been skinning quite alot...only - no characater tool still. :(

But, i plan on getting something to view all my work properly but for now i wanted to show how I've grown....here is my 3rd? avatar skin done way back in 2003/4, using a C6 base...I joined a group of skinners which included Figurefan, Spring Heeled Jack, Supercracker and more in the Valiant - we made costumes with a silver age inspired feel...

Your newwer avatar shows a lot of improvement, my only suggestion would be to look at the difference between the arm/leg patterns (fire motif?), and the torso/face patterns (almost looks leafy/branchy?). But otherwise, everything looks really good. The imprint on the ponytail is really cool as well.
